- plundstedt, on 02/15/2008, -13/+25916%!! Things are looking up then! Last I heard they were as high as 33%
- MrMuffMeat, on 02/15/2008, -11/+128Wow, I must be one unlucky bastard then if the failure rate is ONLY 16%..... I just got my 5th 360 back from repair two days ago. Maybe this one will be one of the other 84% of consoles that don't fail.
- bfrank72, on 02/15/2008, -6/+111The sound card is probably frying due to all the whiny kids on xbox live, thus causing the system to fail.
- jacksons98, on 02/15/2008, -11/+81If you read the article it is 16% returned to SquareTrade a warranty service provider and does not include consoles sent back directly to Microsoft. So that means at the bare minimum it is 16%.
- mungins, on 02/15/2008, -5/+60Yeah but then again 16% is still HORRIBLE!
- kinseyincanada, on 02/15/2008, -9/+57i dont understand how you would still put up with going through 5 xbox's if had mine since launch and its never ringed on me nor has any of my friends. But i dont see how someone could go through 5, if that happened to me i would of sold it and picked up a PS3.
- theblackgecko, on 02/15/2008, -12/+50From an informal sample of three Xbox 360 owners, the failure rate is 66%.
- alphaterminus, on 02/15/2008, -5/+39If Microsoft were the Hillary Clinton campaign, they would be touting an 84% success rate.
- DraggingTheLake, on 02/15/2008, -4/+38How has Microsoft not figured this thing out yet???
- MutatedNantuko, on 02/15/2008, -6/+3316 percent is pretty damn unreasonable.
- OhFrak, on 02/15/2008, -18/+44The defect rate on every 360 is 100 percent. It is a fundamental design defect. Microsoft has yet to demonstrate to the world a single model of the 360 family that has a reasonable RRoD defect rate. Every new version is rumored to be the one where "Microsoft finally fixed the problem". And every new version continues to die like the previous versions.
What is shocking about these numbers is it shows there is a 16 percent failure rate ABOVE AND BEYOND the RRoD problems since RRoD consoles go right back to Microsoft for replacement.
The title to this article should be:
"Xbox 360 Non-RRoD failur rate at 16 percent"
Absolutely disgusting. - DarkShroud, on 02/15/2008, -3/+29Maybe one day we can find out the real failure rate from MS.
- MrMuffMeat, on 02/15/2008, -4/+28well, the first two I had had faulty DVD drives, the 3rd got the three red lights, the 4th one wouldn't play North American DVD's because they sent me a replacement console with the wrong DVD region code and it would spontaneously loose all game sound after about 30 minutes of playing. Hopefully this 5th unit will be the charm although I am not holding my breathe.
I will probably pick up a PS3 here in a couple months mainly for the Blu-Ray and for Ratchet and Clank.... and of course for God of War 3 when it is released on the PS3, but I can't give up my 360 gaming because I enjoy getting on Live with my brother and friends and playing CoD4. My patience has definitely worn thin with MS though. - inactive, on 02/15/2008, -1/+19well you could say 9 thousandths but that would be 15.009% to be relevant to it, but mathematically 1 is over 9 thousandths and so is 15.9.
Anyways, it doesn't work and you are a failure. - suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -1/+19point 6 repeating, of course.
- kbebee, on 02/15/2008, -5/+21I think this is something that exemplifies how people have very little long term vision. The failure rate is high on the 360, that seems to be a universally accepted fact. If this is true, and if some of the other articles floating around the web have any credence, then it's fairly certain that MS rushed the product to market to try to get the lead on Sony and Nintendo at the expense of the customer.
With the above assumed (the truth can't be truly determined in a stupid digg blog), why would you want to put your money and effort into a company who doesn't shoot for customer quality as their main draw to the platform? MS chose to try to beat the competition by two main methods: 1. Beat them to market at any cost 2. Get developers to us MS development tools and do exclusive deals. (assuming the second point based on how they handle their development on the Windows platform)
Where's the innovation there? Where's the long term customer loyalty? What kind of life cycle did their last unit have?
Yes, they extended warranties on their units, but only after the issue became to big to cover over easily.
I'd caution all new buyers (probably none of whom read a silly digg like this) to think about things like that. Invest in the company that is quality driven and you'll always come out ok. My assessment is that MS is not that company. - spykez, on 02/15/2008, -2/+17Was I the only one who came here feeling like 16% was a success?
- MackPrime, on 02/15/2008, -1/+16give a source or a citation or ***** off.
- jacksons98, on 02/15/2008, -4/+1816% is only one warranty provider and doesn't include consoles sent back to MS. MS has already claimed it's a design defect so all consoles have the problem. As such as time goes on the percentage will only get higher and higher.
- mavranos, on 02/15/2008, -11/+24I have 2 360s in my house (mine and my sons). Both have failed mulitple times. As far as I am concerned the failure rate is 100%. Still playing them though. And still not buying a PS3. Not yet anyway.
- Jay730, on 02/15/2008, -5/+17Just sent my xbox360 back today for the second time since i got it...
- LimeParrot, on 02/15/2008, -10/+22I bought my xbox360 just over a year ago. Last week I got the RRoD. I had paid for 2 years extended warranty with EBGames, so I took it in, paid an extra $50AUS, and got an xbox 360 elite, brand new. And now the warranty is with Microsoft, starting from today it's 3 years. So I can't say I'm pissed off or anything. It's a fun console and the 3 years from Microsoft (announced last year) was a great gesture. And it looks like the failure rate has dropped from the 30%'s. I'm happy TBH.
- DavidGX, on 02/15/2008, -3/+15At least my console doesn't have viruses, spyware, bloated apps and other assorted windows niceties. Also, I don't have to play my games with photoshop controllers.
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -5/+17Funny how my PS3, Wii, DirecTV box, home theater reciever...all work magically fine?
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -4/+16It's over 9000!
- Ajajadude, on 02/15/2008, -5/+16Why not submit a link to the original story, rather than this half-assed "report" that seems to be typical of engadget "articles" on Digg?
- Malarie, on 02/15/2008, -21/+32 I bought a PS3 2 months ago, it is always running on Folding at home when im not playing games, guess wha? Never crashed.
the Box is great, but who is better than the japs to create technical marvels? - m00nstone, on 02/15/2008, -7/+18There is now way it is that low. No freaking way!
- Zamfir, on 02/15/2008, -36/+46It's more like 33% or higher...
- chandler, on 02/15/2008, -3/+12You're giving Microsoft too much credit...
- AvidPreatorian, on 02/15/2008, -8/+17keep on that boat (god knows i used to), but if you tried a ps3 you wouldn't go back. dont let digg's bias stop you from even trying the thing. great system.
- objectcode, on 02/15/2008, -1/+10dugg down
- milliamp, on 02/15/2008, -2/+11Leeeeeeroy! jenkins!
- TheBigBad, on 02/15/2008, -3/+12luckily no.
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -10/+19Is anyone surprised? It's a Microsoft product and only they could be the proud owners of the world's most unreliable games console after all. Congrats Microsoft, you've done it again :-) Gates and Balmer must be proud.
- neATL, on 02/15/2008, -1/+10some people don't care about blu-ray nor HD-DVD. Im still confused how that is suppose to be selling point for people who want to play games.
- JigoroKano, on 02/15/2008, -1/+10Both the PS1 and PS2 had their own laser problems, but nothing of this magnitude.
There were some Sony laptop batteries however... - MrFisty, on 02/15/2008, -3/+12I had three 360s die... non due to RROD, all extremely well looked after. He's not an idiot, it's just a crap piece of hardware.
- grimeygutter, on 02/15/2008, -4/+12wtf do you mean by "I still have to pretend that Microsoft fanboys have anything to talk about."?
It's totally incoherent. - dman99, on 02/15/2008, -3/+11Maybe Microsoft should consider making their next console out of Nintendium. That's what the Gameboy was made out of and you could run that thing over with a lawn mower!
- thebarkingdog, on 02/15/2008, -1/+9Last night, in the lobby of Call of Duty 4, I was subjected to a couple kids arguing, and one of them actually said "Let me finish my peanut butter and jelly sandwich."
- bthug7, on 02/15/2008, -2/+9Yeah I think it must be some fundamental genetic difference. Japanese people(would you prefer slanty eye fools?) are incapable innovation, they specialize in level infinity thunder stealing and level 10,000 racist American insecurity about capabilities power.
- bthug7, on 02/15/2008, -4/+11The point is though, 360 is still more popular than PS3, even with the widespread knowledge of failure. I never have been and never will be a fan of sony game systems.
- YellowSnowDemon, on 02/15/2008, -2/+9Imo, console averages are stupid imo. Wii is getting absolutely pounded with shovelware because of how much ass it's kicking in sales. And imo, the good games on the Wii are better than the good games on the PS3. :3
- Quaterni0n, on 02/15/2008, -1/+8I agree. It definitely is a more robust system, but where are the good games? *crickets*
You need to give credit where credit is due: IBM designed the Cell processor. - khellendros1984, on 02/15/2008, -4/+11My launch console died, but I fixed it. Just because it's working now doesn't mean that it wasn't defective. 360 gamers have to live with the knowledge that their machine may just give out one day =/
- GorfTron, on 02/15/2008, -8/+15My 360 died and I was not surprised.
Things to know. You will be shipped a refurbed unit - not your own. Who knows how many hours on the parts. And the refurbed 360 will have a much louder fan. - davidrools, on 02/15/2008, -2/+9My friends and I have all had better luck with the Xbox horizontal rather than vertical. I also leave mine on a USB laptop cooler to take heat off the bottom, while leaving plenty of clearance above and on the sides.
- b0k0n0n, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6The failure rate on these is at least 16% . . . which is why I want to tell you about our extended service plan!!!
- r3m1x, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7For as much as people put into their first purchase of an XBOX 360 (games, extra accessories, XBOX Live, warranty), I'm shocked at how blind people are to shrug off getting a PS3, one or two games and an extra controller for roughly the same amount of money. If it means spending that much and not have to worry about tackling customer service, so be it.
