- snareguy17, on 11/17/2008, -4/+70I just really can't wait to stream HD movies from Netflix over my 360.
- inajeep, on 11/17/2008, -3/+58"why the 360 is so enticing to third-party developers: 25 of the 34 games the Wii put on the list were published by Nintendo itself. Each game also stayed on the charts month after month. Titles like Mario Kart, Wii Play, and Wii Fit were each counted multiple times; Wii Play is rarely off the chart. This is good news for Nintendo, but bad news for everyone else: Nintendo excels at selling Nintendo games and keeping a few games relevant for a long time. "
Sounds familiar. N64, GC... It looks like Nintendo does really well for itself but all their 3rd party games have to fend for themselves.
The linked article regarding this months figures from ars is also an interesting read. - MCA2142, on 11/17/2008, -2/+53Coding for Xbox is very similar to developers who have made games for PCs.
And Microsoft is known for developer support. Almost all the tools they use to make PC games are used to code for the 360.
There is a reason why the Xbox prototype was called the "DirectXbox." Almost identical SDKs. The 360 currently runs a modified DX9. - LimeParrot, on 11/17/2008, -8/+57Isn't it also more time consuming and costly to develop for the PS3? (it's a question, not a statement)
- FlyinWhee, on 11/17/2008, -2/+39I remember an interview with the guys at Harmonix (Rock Band) saying how involved Microsoft are in helping them with the development, going as far as patching the Dashboard to implement a new features they needed for Rock Band.
They even went as far as saying the Techs at Microsoft were almost part of the team there.
Accessible platform and great support. You really can't ask for more. - fszymanski, on 11/17/2008, -3/+33I have the wii and the 360, after a month of owning my WII i pretty much stoped playing it. I get bored really fast with the games for the wii. If the wii had the Mature titles that the 360 has then I would dust off my WII and play it. I thought that the new supersmash bros would do it for me but it didnt, very disappointing.
- dexternights, on 11/17/2008, -11/+37I just bought a Wii without researching the titles available on it, and got shocked. Most popular titles arent in Wii. And the Wii play or Mario makes you bored within a few days.
- barthrh, on 11/17/2008, -1/+21I would imagine that XboxLive is part of that reason. If a game succeeds, particularly with an on-line component, there is something to add value to MS. No so in the case of Sony. This is why free on-line play (apart from the infrastructure costs) isn't a sustainable model.
- lcmatt, on 11/17/2008, -2/+21Free online play (PS3) requires the developers to put aside a budget on hosting servers, if they ever went bust or just decided it wasn't cost effective anymore the online component is lost.
Pay to play (xbox) however gives developers the option to add in multiplayer for free without the huge upkeep costs as it's passed onto the consumer through subscription fee's, while some people complain about the cost I'd rather pay the cash knowing that no matter how old the game is I'll be able to jump online still. - LimeParrot, on 11/17/2008, -3/+21And why did it use to be harder? Is that because Xbox is very similar to PCs?
- mercury4k, on 11/17/2008, -2/+182 more days until the new xbox experience!! woot!!!
- ExRe, on 11/17/2008, -3/+19Does you got english?
- zeebo, on 11/17/2008, -6/+22The Xbox360 arcade is all you really need to play a game, and it costs about the same as a mid range video card by itself. Plus, it removes the need to have Windows installed on your computer, which is an added bonus. Not to mention that saves you another $130-$300. Its also far easier to put up with the DRM in a console, than it is to deal with the invasive nature of the DRM solutions that companies have come up with for Windows.
The 360 is really the first Microsoft product that I've actually not had any complaints with, it does what its supposed to, does it well, and it doesn't try to do much more than that. Now if they'd just learn how to do that with the rest of their products my average day at work would likely involve far less cursing at internet explorer. - OverZealousHobo, on 11/17/2008, -2/+17hmmm...well somebody didn't read the article....
- eadnams, on 11/17/2008, -5/+19PS3 has games? I thought it was a blu-ray player...
- gwolf, on 11/17/2008, -6/+20Perhaps, but people with PC's that can handle the latest games are not all that common. That reasoning may work for you personally but not the masses. The beauty of the console is that one need not be a hardware software expert to make it work. Pc gamers have to patch and tweak and fuss with their rigs without end.
- Malik112099, on 11/17/2008, -2/+15Statistically, most of your friends should have Xbox 360s.
- Farmer77, on 11/17/2008, -1/+14I have the PS3, but I bought the Xbox 360 Pro Holiday Bundle last week (good price at Dell, they were selling it for only $254 with a coupon code, it has since expired) While I like my PS3 and do not plan on selling it, I can't help but notice that on many PS3 games, the visuals have a soft blur to them, like someone having a slight case of cataracts, with the gamma turned up. At first, I thought this was done on purpose by the game developers, but over time, I realize that is just how the graphics are suppose to look on the PS3, like how you associate muddy textures on the N64.
With news that the Xbox360 is picking up steam in Japan and the Dell price coupon, I made my purchase for the Xbox360. I wanted to be sure there was no way I will be on the losing end of the console wars this time around (I had the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast...so yeah...well, anyway...) Playing with the Xbox 360 over the weekend, I am glad I bought it. The system is not loud at all, at least mine wasn't. Microsoft must have shipped out new models with better internal components, so hopefully I won't get any RROD. Graphics are sharp with what seems to be better color fidelity. So I'll use my Xbox 360 for games that appear on both consoles and Xbox360 exclusives while the PS3 will be used for side-scrollers, fighting games like SF4, PS3 exclusives and movies. Downloading a movie on the net and then putting it on a SDcard to watch on TV upscaled is pretty awesome. - Shakermaker, on 11/17/2008, -7/+20X-box??
- Elranzer, on 11/17/2008, -2/+14Yeah because triple-core PowerPC CPUs are all too common in PCs these days.
To be serious, though, it's because Microsoft provides the best official development tools for the Xbox 360, which can cross-compile between PC and 360 effortlessly. Development tools have always been one of Microsoft undisputed strengths (Visual Studio, .NET, XNA, Microsoft SQL, etc). - Tape99, on 11/17/2008, -2/+14No.
- Frogee, on 11/17/2008, -2/+14ECKS-BAWKS
- skulczyk, on 11/17/2008, -3/+15I also have PS3 and xbox360. I like both, but when games come out for both systems, I buy xbox 360. The graphics on it seem to be sharper. Not better, but sharper. Like the PS3 is trying to be ‘artistic’ or something. Also, when I play the PS3 I have this feeling like I’m missing something. I like the option to check who’s playing what game and join them. Or chat with someone while playing different games. Although the PS3 has Bluetooth support, Blueray. Browser… I like the whole xbox 360 experience a lot more. It’s more fun to play on xbox live. I don’t remember the last time I turned on the PS3… now with GOW2 and netflix soon, it will be even longer… plus I hate the PS3 controller, seems too small and uncomfortable after using the xbox one.... and you can't switch batters when controller dies.
- baldmage, on 11/17/2008, -1/+13take off your nintendo glasses and read the damn article! They removed all first party games, including the ones on the 360, on the second chart.
- djrbx, on 11/17/2008, -6/+17Honestly I was really thinking about buying a PS3 just for the blueray player support. Only until it was confirmed that XboxLive was officially going to offer Netflix on demand come the Fall update was when I decided to opt out of buying the PS3. Granted I have never been the type to buy physical media and prefer downloadable content. I see the Netflix partnership a huge step in the right direction after the failure of HD-DVD.
I have nothing against Sony or the Playstation brand, I just support Microsoft and their Xbox brand a little more. Ever since the battle of the Playstation 2 and the original Xbox, having both at the time (Playstation 2 a little longer than the Xbox), Microsoft won me over with the original Halo (reason why I bought a Xbox in the first place). Since then, I havn't looked back at my decision. Thankfully, I never had a problem such as the RROD or faulty DVD drive with the 360.
That being said, I just bought GOW2, so they can add that as another tittle sold to the 360. - machocheese34, on 11/17/2008, -0/+11simple, publishers wont make enough money putting out PC games
- wedges, on 11/17/2008, -0/+10i did. get a job.
- camilos007, on 11/17/2008, -0/+10He did remove them. Compare the charts and you'll see he removed all first party titles for all 3 consoles.
- level32, on 11/17/2008, -0/+9Like the P-S3 and the W-ii
Duh! - Cerialthriller, on 11/17/2008, -5/+14i regret buying a Wii and only ever bother with the virtual console games anymore.
- DryCat, on 11/17/2008, -3/+12Supporting wii =
Make horrible game.
Add waggle.
Profit. - MCA2142, on 11/17/2008, -3/+12The PC Column is here:
http://www.thepiratebay.com - pmc64, on 11/17/2008, -1/+10It's called a xbox not a x-box.
- Arkz, on 11/17/2008, -2/+11sony do what they always do, make some POS obscure dev kits and leave it to the devs to figure out how to use the piece of crap, if they made an effort games would be made quicker and i bet more devs would jump onboard!
- TheTaoOfBill, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8You're not understanding the problem here. It's not the price. It's how complicated it is.
Your basic non computer expert would have to do a lot of research to know which components are best for which games.
They have to keep their computers upgraded regularly to make sure they can still run todays games.
And when there are kids involved they have to walk them through step by step to install each game.
Not to mention if you really want the best bang for your buck you need to build your own computer. And even though this process has been made as easy as building a k-nex windmill it can still be pretty intimidating for your average consumer.
For someone who knows a lot about computers that all sounds like easy basic stuff. But for someone with little computer experience it can be quite intimidating.
To the point where you would pay more simply for the ease and convenience of a console.
This is why console games are outselling PC games by huge margins. Not to mention the PC piracy problem. - nattybohman, on 11/17/2008, -1/+9I have all three and I've had them since their respective launches.
Here's my impressions of each.
The Wii - Never turn the thing on unless people are coming over. Mostly shovelware and kid games with a few exceptions. Those exceptions tend to have such last gen graphics that I can hardly bare to play them.
PS3- I've enjoyed three games since launch - all have been from Insomniac. Rachet and clank, Resistance 1 and 2. Cross platform games are always purchased for my 360 because the PS3 online experience is SOOOO far behind Xbox live. In some respects it's even behind the original xbox. Not all games that are online even support voice chat for crying out loud!
I keep hoping for more exclusives that I'll like.
Xbox 360 - The hardware is absolute TRASH! I've on my 6th system. MS should be ashamed. That being said, when I have a working system, it blows the others away. It has much better exclusives and the multiplatform games are on par or sometimes better (frame rate wise especially) than the PS3 versions. The 360 controller feels much more natural to me with the analog sticks that are on slightly different levels. As I've said before, the online system simply rocks. - Licurgo, on 11/17/2008, -3/+10when i feel for the first time my xbox controller, remind me grabbing a glock 17, the same feel, the same weight, the same cooliness.
i was scared about the red ring, but now i believe is just a myth invented by sony. - Meep3D, on 11/17/2008, -1/+88gb, and it's plenty enough unless you want to put 4 hours of HD video cutscenes on there.
The whole 'not enough space' thing is just a sony fanboy talking point, and not at all reflective of reality. PC gaming has yet to have a problem with 8gb, and it is arguably higer res and more advanced than any consoles. - staticneuron, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Quite honestly, there are cheaper blu ray players out there. The only reason you should consider a PS3 is if the games appeal to you.
- Kazakaz, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Correct. The PS3 does have HD movie rental, just like 360, but not streamed from NetFlix like the 360 will have.
- jugglingjon, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7I somehow got access to the new xbox experience (and netflix player) after I bought Mirror's edge, and I can confirm, the HD netflix streaming is amazing. It works just like the Roku box, but with HD, and a slicker interface. It's definitely worth the $9/month netflix subscription for anyone who already has an xbox live gold account.
- theandy1, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7It's tempting to sell my wii, but I know as soon as I do they'll announce a few must have games. Still though, I haven't touched the thing in 3 months...
- Elranzer, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7If Halo, Fable and Viva Pinata are any indication of Microsoft first-party titles going to PC, I'll pass. They play a hell of a lot better on the Xbox.
- AvatarofJustice, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Um...the second chart is entitled "Third Party titles in NPD Top 10 list by platform." This is why you see the number of 360 games drop from 32 to 26.
- pmc64, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6Netflix's streaming library is kinda crappy right now.
- TheFinestShadow, on 11/17/2008, -4/+10Xbox! Xbox! Xbox dammit.
Not xBox.
Not XBox.
Not X-box.
Not X-Box or x-Box.
[/rant] - username9000, on 11/17/2008, -9/+15"Developing for PS3 instead of 360 doesn't take more time/effort." Not true.
ps3 will never be the lead console. 3rd parties know where their bread is buttered.
xbox to ps3 port - usually the ps3 port is inferior
ps3 to xbox port - no difference. - zeebo, on 11/17/2008, -2/+8It costs less than the Pro if you decide you need the hard drive with the $99 pack with the 60gig drive and the headset. I really don't see how its gimped though, it plays all xbox360 games.
- Arkz, on 11/17/2008, -1/+74GB DVD? more like about 8, though most 360 games seem to max out at about 6.8GB, and if they need more room do what a lot of PS3 titles already do(but for a different reason, the PS3's blu ray drive is slow) just install part of the game on the HDD
