- h0tpot, on 09/06/2008, -3/+291I think it was a big conspiracy to boost the sales in the towel industry.
- billjimbob, on 09/06/2008, -37/+140This article doesn't say anything we didn't know already. We all knew the 360 was terribly built, but at least now you don't have to pay a dime to get it fixed.
Hardly a "mind-blowing expose." Leave it to Gizmodo to overreact on an anti-Microsoft story. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -5/+97All that work and some ***** blog steals his digg credit.
Way to go guys.
http://venturebeat.com/2008/09/05/xbox-360-defects ... - zapass, on 09/07/2008, -23/+112we, at Microsoft, knew we had a bit of a failure issue with our xbox360. yes we knew...
"boooooo wooooo boooooo!"
but we also knew what a great fan base we had!
"yeaaaaaaaah, clap clap clap!"
it's never been about us, it's been about you: we were screwing up but you made it all possible!
"yeaaaaaaaah, clap clap clap!"
you got millions of RRODs but yet, you had faith in us, you stayed the course and you kept coming back!
"yeaaaaaaaah, clap clap clap!"
and this is why, we decided to keep drilling your ass with no lube like the dumb ca$h cow you really are!
"yeaaaaaaaah, clap clap clap clap clap clap!"
"more drilling! we want more drilling!"
your patience has paid off my friends!
with all that ca$h you gave us, we've been able to get filthy rich like myself and there was even some left over to bribe the media and steal some big exclusives out of our enemies!
"yeaaaaaaaah, clap clap clap!"
We'll win that console war so that you can forget how pathetic losers you are: Goooooooood bless Microsoft and the fellowship of the Red Ring of Death!
"yeaaaaaaaah, clap clap clap clap clap clap!" - erockappel, on 09/06/2008, -15/+85flustercucks is my new favorite word.
- Nattybumpoe, on 09/06/2008, -16/+86Here is a prediction if this story gets dugg into popularity:
Anonymous 360 Owner: "I've had 4 360s since they released"
...
Other 360 Owner: "Oh, I've had 2 RROD on me"
...
Another 360 Owner: "The 360 is a reliable system. I have had mine without failure for 2 years.
The only thing that I would like is for some cited sources in this sort of article. It's all anecdotal when you don't have sources. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -3/+71Nothing a Jerry Seinfeld commercial can't fix!
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -7/+70cupid stunt.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -5/+65Was this a mistake on Microsoft's part? No. They took a calculated risk that consumers are ***** retarded, and they were right.
- smashingmonkey, on 09/07/2008, -3/+62***** you... three of my 360s died of RROD!
- jtscira, on 09/06/2008, -3/+57I am not anonymous at least to myself.
I am on number 5.
2 RROD
3 Unreadable drive errors.
All were under the extended warranty of Gamestop and with each exchange I got a new system. Now since Gamestop will not sell an extended warranty I am on my own. But I think this one should work since its a newer chipset. - TupacFan07, on 09/07/2008, -3/+55Link to direct article:

...god dammit! - GorfTron, on 09/07/2008, -15/+52Oh well, I am on my 3rd XBOX 360. My first PS2(6 years old) and PS3's just keep running. The fan in the rebuilt XBOX makes racket and the system locks frequently. Get a PS3 and save yourself the headaches.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -5/+41they really should have made sure the 360 worked right before they started selling them.
one night, we hooked 5 xboxes to a LAN, and 4 of them got RRoD. Luckily, we had towels to wrap them in, so only one of those four had to be sent to microsoft… - nutsackorama, on 09/07/2008, -7/+41Oooooooh! I thought a *****-ass product came from thorough testing and competent product management. Now I know the truth - Thanks Gizmodo!
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -3/+33"I think it should be pointed out that the defects 360's have experienced are overblown"
33% says it's not overblown - jtscira, on 09/06/2008, -3/+33I have had a system since launch and I am on my 5th one............***** no its not overblown.
- Nattybumpoe, on 09/06/2008, -2/+31I don't know what your definition of overblown is, however, MS had to invest 2-3 billion dollars on account of "warranty" (pending class action lawsuit) concerns. Most of the friends that have had 360s have had to get a new one. I'll give it to you: Microsoft did a great job with their PR department in steering away speculation that their console was bad, but truth be told, the hardware was rushed and unreliable, which was a big mistake that comes with being the first to release.
- getrealnow, on 09/07/2008, -22/+50I like to play halo 3 and have the controller on my balls tickling it oh ever so gently.
- handheldchimp, on 09/07/2008, -10/+38You know, the 360 isn't that hard to repair from the rrod. You can repair it yourself in about 20 minutes...without using the towel trick.
First off, the heatsinks weren't cracking. That is a bunch of *****. It was the solder that was cracking. Microsoft's procedure of soldering components to the board is horrible. They use lead-free solder and cool the solder incorrectly causing the solder to weaken and crack.
Another big problem is that the thermal paste Microsoft uses and how it is applied. Thermal paste is supposed to be smoothlly applied and you are only supposed to use a rice grain sized amount. Instead, Microsoft chose to put a huge glob on the GPU dies and just smush it out with the heatsink. WRONG! This causes the heatsink to sit unevenly on the gpu die and doesn't take heat from the die correctly. Using too much thermal paste defeats the purpose.
Next up, the ram chips. Yes, the memory was faulty, but it was another problem by MS, not infineon. It was once again the solder that MS used as well as the soldering process. There was/still is insufficient cooling to the whole system (we all know that). This eventually caused the x-clamps holding down the heatsinks to warp, which put uneven pressure on the GPU dies, as well as the motherboard. This inturn caused the board to flex, and then caused the ram chips to lose connections to the board.
It also didn't help that MS used BGA chips instead of traditional chips. The BGA, or Ball-Grid-Array chips connect to the board underneath of the chip, not off to the sides. Loosing connections for these little fellows isn't that hard. It requires lots of heat (check!), improper pressure (check!), and the motherboard to flex a little (check!).
Remember, if you are going to attempt to repair your Xbox 360, using the Towel Trick MAKES IT WORSE! Sure it make work for a few days, but a majority of the time it will only run for a few hours while it is still hot. Never overheat the console with the heatsinks still on as tight as they are when they come stock! This will just cause the heatsinks to squish the chips down...rendering the console totally useless... - GameEngineer, on 09/07/2008, -4/+32"But I think this one should work since its a newer chipset."
Yeah, they've been saying that since before the 360 launched:
"Those are just demo units in stores, the real ones won't fail"
"Those demo units were just setup by incompetent store employees"
"The launch models were probably rushed, all those RRoD problems are now fixed"
"I hear the next chipset X is supposed to have fixed that RRoD problem" - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -7/+34bumb ditch
- santasing, on 09/07/2008, -1/+27Well, gamestop stopping the warranty program (one of the the most profitable things a business like that can have) ought to have clued these people in.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+27Don't forget to bring a towel.
- sarchosis, on 09/07/2008, -2/+28I don't really remember why I got a PS3 and not a 360, but things like these make me happy I did.
- compgeek, on 09/07/2008, -5/+28I don't own a PS3 or a 360 but after seeing the failure rate on the 360's it's just sad how shoddy things are. As much as there are some amazing 360 titles that I've played at my buddy's house the PS3 is looking better and better everyday
- GameEngineer, on 09/07/2008, -5/+28What incentive does Microsoft have to ship working hardware?
Microsoft has a group of some 20-24 million former Xbox and current Xbox 360 owners who will:
* Keep buying console after console as they die
* Make up stories about other consoles to try to give the impression that 360's hardware defects are not insane relative to other consoles
* Flame other 360 owners who complain about their 360 dying in forums with "you must be an idiot" flames
* Bury media stories about the 360 hardware fiasco - staticneuron, on 09/07/2008, -0/+22Whats funny about my statement... My 360 did work fine for two years.......... then it failed recently. RROD.
And I was hoping I was immune. - XxpokemasterxX, on 09/07/2008, -2/+23you're a towel
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -3/+23don't you mean dod gammit?
- Wrangler76, on 09/07/2008, -6/+26Not really. There was always a good number of fanboys saying that the problem was overexaggerated or that people were just not using their XBOX 360s properly. It IS pretty mind-blowing to see the large number of *****-ups that went on during the development of the console and WHY it happened..
- syda, on 09/07/2008, -2/+22what a waste of hitting that show button...
this should be relevant to your interests, enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fauFEk626Pk - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -6/+26Yeah, it is.
- handheldchimp, on 09/07/2008, -2/+21Your 360 can still red ring dumb ass. You only have the 65nm CPU, and the problem lies in the GPU.
Go shoot yourself before posting next time. - buckrogers1965, on 09/07/2008, -1/+18There went the profit margin.
- shadeofgreen, on 09/07/2008, -18/+35I know the fix. Get a PS3 instead. Much better.
- lazyspartan, on 09/07/2008, -5/+22BUCK FUTTER!
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+17I wish I could digg your comment up like, 14 million times...
- shazbotben, on 09/07/2008, -1/+16also dugg for not being about mccain, palin, or obama.
- triont, on 09/07/2008, -0/+15Right when I thought I was safe......RROD. Sent it off yesterday.
I want to play guitar hero. - seinman, on 09/07/2008, -5/+19Hey, me too!
- marinman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+14Uhhh, how come the original story's not being dugg?
I know it's tough to get some non-Giz stories but come on - JackSchittt, on 09/07/2008, -4/+18it was one of the main reasons I decided against buying an xbox.
- mattgee725, on 09/07/2008, -1/+15i'm so high right now
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+13So people who have been using game consoles for YEARS(20 years, in some cases), are suddenly getting a high number of failed consoles and we're supposed to believe that they just don't know how to set their ***** up? Sorry, if it were improper setup, then this would have been an equally large problem amongst all consoles from Pong to now. Unless, of course, you choose to believe that Microsoft customers are of sufficiently lower intelligence than the rest of the general population. If that's the case, you might be onto something.
- ZER0JACK, on 09/07/2008, -9/+22Numb Digger
- smashingmonkey, on 09/07/2008, -0/+13I baby all of my gear and I've had exceptional luck with all of my electronics. Do I think the failure rate is overblown? Let's put it this way: I really enjoy playing on my fourth 360.
