- schmiggyjk, on 03/07/2008, -14/+231Don't act like a retard. "I never thought that this would EVER happen". Are you serious? Microsoft has said repeatedly they would consider the "other" drive if there was a demand or it won the format war. MS is about making money, not pushing HD DVD, even when HD DVD was a viable format.
The reason they supported it in the first place was because the more HD format confusing there was, the better off they were pushing digital downloads over XBL. - Dgen_X, on 03/07/2008, -6/+115This is a good idea for Sony, it doesn't matter which console someone buys, they'll most likely end up buying BluRay movies
Win/Win in my eyes - estvir, on 03/07/2008, -5/+79Shocking? Only if you've been in a cave for the past couple of years.
- chris9902, on 03/07/2008, -6/+75You do know Microsoft develop the VC-1 codec used in Blu-Ray don't you? So actually Microsoft have been making money off Sony.
- terminalpariah, on 03/07/2008, -7/+68Microsoft and the HD DVD consortium approached the Blu-Ray group about merging the formats. Their only request was that Blu-Ray adopt HDi instead of Java for interactivity. The Blu-Ray group sent their engineers away to discuss HDi and vote on it. The vote was 7-5 in favor of adopting HDi. The Blu-Ray group declined their engineers' recommendation and went with Java anyway. And that's when the format war officially began.
- Cerialthriller, on 03/07/2008, -1/+44i live in a cave and I wasnt shocked.
- terminalpariah, on 03/07/2008, -5/+42http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_definition_optic ...
"At the end of June 2005, Sun announced that the Blu-ray Association had chosen the Java-based BD-J interactivity layer instead of Microsoft's HDi. This was based on a BDA board vote favouring BD-J 10 to 4, despite a technical committee previously favouring HDi by a vote of 7 to 5." - inactive, on 03/07/2008, -0/+37Cause of licensing fee revenue?
- krische, on 03/07/2008, -8/+37Don't forget that Microsoft developed HDi, the interactive system for HD-DVD. So I'm sure they wanted it to win a little too.
- Ajajadude, on 03/07/2008, -1/+29I doubt they'd make games for any format other than DVD9. If they do that, they'll have to add BR capability to new consoles and then have to tell current 360 owners that if they want to play any new games, they'll have to throw down another $200-$300. I'm sure that'd go over well.
A BR add-on wouldn't be for anything more than movies. - dafragsta, on 03/07/2008, -1/+27Oh Engadget. You say so much, and yet you say nothing at all. Why did we ever question your purpose?
- Charlotte_Web, on 03/07/2008, -0/+23Cross-pollination of tech by rival companies is very commonplace. No matter how much companies may dislike each other, pursuit of coin is still the number one goal.
- Charlotte_Web, on 03/07/2008, -1/+23So obvious a caveman could see it...
- Ajajadude, on 03/07/2008, -4/+24$400 for a complete gaming console including BR, or $300 for a console plus an extra $200+ for BR add-on. I don't think they're worried people will be running to the 360 in droves just because it offers a BR player.
- dheaddy, on 03/07/2008, -1/+19On one hand I totally agree with your argument, but on the other I think Sony have a slight conflict of interests in either pushing Blu-ray OR the PS3.
For example, I'm a 360 owner with a stack of great games, and I'm thinking will buy a blu-ray player in the next year or so. At the moment I would get a PS3 as it's a capable player, and being a gamer I appreciate it's got a few good games on the system too.
However, if MS released a blu-ray drive for say £129, I would be seriously tempted to get that OVER the PS3, thus saving myself ~£160. So this could be very good for the blu-ray brand, but stifle the opportunity for increasing PS3 sales. - triplehelix, on 03/07/2008, -4/+21an organization doesn't have to license its technology to any individual or organization it doesn't want to.
- groberts1980, on 03/07/2008, -1/+17What Typhoon said. VOD is years away from being a serious opponent to Blu-Ray. There is the whole bandwidth issue, and most people at this point still want to own their media.
- KaiUno, on 03/07/2008, -0/+15360 games will never be released on anything other than standard dvd rom. Microsoft isn't about to alienate a huge chunk of their user base by forcing them to buy a blu-ray player. Even when the blu-ray player becomes standard in a future release of the xbox hardware will the games still only appear on dvd. There might be a slim chance some years down there road there will be dual releases, replacing the disc-swapping need of future games like Lost Odyssey (which comes on 4 discs). But I even doubt that will happen. Console gamers aren't pc gamers and MS would to well to "keep it simple" by just releasing one version of a game.
- Speed, on 03/07/2008, -3/+171. I don't like waiting 2-5 hours for a movie to download before I can watch it.
2. If I'm shelling out $30 for a movie, I want to have a physical disc.
3. If they do it like Apple, where you can only download a purchase once, it won't take off.
4. The formats were flops because no one wanted to buy a format only for it to die. Remember how long it took for DVD to really take off. (Too young to speak for VHS) - inactive, on 03/07/2008, -6/+20I actually think this puts the PS3 at an advantage.
The regular xbox360 is $350. The PS3 is 400$, come with blu-ray and has better specs than the xbox360 elite. If I was in the market for a console right now, the ps3, to me, seems like a much better deal.
On top of that, Sony will make money on microsoft games because of the format. - NYC10004, on 03/07/2008, -1/+15Zen, with all due respect, you're wrong.
It's "proprietary" to the Blu-Ray Disc Association not SONY. It not like their the Alliance or something.
Samsung and the rest are not buddies with SONY they're competitors. Which is why they'd undercut SONY anyway they could to get their Blu-Ray drives into the 360.
It's not about MS vs. SONY, this is not sports, It's Money. - MidnightRealism, on 03/07/2008, -0/+13Blu-Ray games won't happen until the next Xbox.
- Typhoon2009, on 03/07/2008, -8/+21Ugh. There are very few internet service providers who can give you the speeds necessary to comfortably stream (or download) a long, super high quality 1080p24 video with uncompressed DTS-MA 7.1 audio. At least in the US. And even then, it's relegated to only a select few areas that nobody cares about.
- Elranzer, on 03/07/2008, -2/+13If Sony won't build it, then Microsoft could always get Samsung or any of the other manufacturers in the BluRay Consortium to build the Xbox 360 BluRay player. People here seem to forget... Sony does NOT own BluRay!!
- chris9902, on 03/07/2008, -2/+13It won't be used for games.
- Corman420, on 03/07/2008, -0/+11Or to make money?
- Speed, on 03/07/2008, -4/+15Not always true. With the N64, many of the later games needed that expansion kit thing to make games run better. Most of the later PSX/PSOne games needed a DualShock controller.
And if I can get a Blu-Ray player for my 360 for $200 (assuming its the same cost as the HD-DVD addon was), or a PS3 for $400, I'll get the 360 Blu-Ray player. - Myztry, on 03/07/2008, -1/+11Exclusive titles are extremely valuable assets in the console market. Currently Bluray movies (in the console market) are exclusive to Sony. Not just individual titles, but the whole genre.
BUT even if Sony refused to license Bluray to Microsoft, it provides little obstacle. Microsoft just needs a licensed third party to manufacture and then buy off them. License agreements (or requirements) don't transfer onto third parties after sale. - ersnyder, on 03/07/2008, -0/+10You mistake Microsoft for Apple.
- NYC10004, on 03/07/2008, -0/+10What you meant to say was... Sony, Phillips, Toshiba, *****, Hitachi and Pioneer invented the DVD, right?
- JigoroKano, on 03/07/2008, -0/+10Sony is a huge company with many subsidiaries. Those subsidiaries mostly act according to their own individual interests. Sometimes they work together and sometimes one ***** over the other; generally media ***** over electronics. I remember Sony music CD's being released for the Sega Saturn... in fact I still have one.
- crerwin, on 03/07/2008, -1/+10Just like they made their own to avoid having to support HD DVD. Oh, wait.
- kingmanic, on 03/07/2008, -2/+11@chris9902: They made a codec. Sony had a bigger hand in it then that. They both were involved but I doubt it's equal involvement.
- RATM4EVER, on 03/07/2008, -6/+15teamxbox.com reported this story, providing this update yesterday:
Update
A Microsoft spokesperson provided the following comment in regards to this article:
"We have made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."
...but then again, Microsoft doesn't comment on rumors, right? - GUTTS, on 03/07/2008, -9/+18Awwwww....how cute. Take note Israelis and Palestinians, If Microsoft and Sony can come together surely your 500 year old blood feud pales in comparison?
- inactive, on 03/07/2008, -3/+12Why are you being dugg down? If anything is to be learned about the current price of 360 extra's, its that they arent cheap. By the time this actually comes out, you will be able to get a decent stand alone blu-ray player for the same price as the 360 addon probably.
- ShugNinx21, on 03/07/2008, -0/+9Who said Sony and Microsoft hate each other? They are businesses and they happen to have competing consloes. in the end they are out to make money and if that means having to use tech from a rival company's other division then they will do it.
- EtherGnat, on 03/07/2008, -1/+9Read them again. What the articles said is that Sony is "approaching" a $400 build price. Even if we assume that actually means $400, Sony sells the consoles to retailers for less than $400, and also has distribution and other ancillary costs. It's almost certain Sony is still losing money, but they've done a remarkable job of cutting costs in 17 months.
- treed, on 03/07/2008, -0/+8Because developers will be flocking to support a peripheral that only a minority of the console owners have. Yeah, that works.
- staticneuron, on 03/07/2008, -2/+10No Because this is a lie. Only one part is correct and that is MS going to blu ray for HDi. This is a case of wikipedia being wrong ( OMG I know). The first attempt to merge the format was back in 2003 when HD-DVD was called AOD (Advanced Optical Disc). It was the BR group that first talked to toshiba and NEC.
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/itmanagement/0,1000000308, ...
There are just some people who remember when these formats were first announced. And so many people actually think this whole format disagreement started in 2005? - groberts1980, on 03/07/2008, -0/+8But either way, you're buying Blu-Ray movies, and Sony makes their money.
- piper999, on 03/07/2008, -1/+9There are laws against corporate anti-competitive behaviour and MS was recently fined in Europe for breaking them.
- supersteve, on 03/07/2008, -4/+11the whole HD-DVD/Blue-ray thing is a mess. I can just download HD movies and not waste my time with the stupid disks anymore. One day we will have Ethernet ports on our TVs and we will just stream the HD content to them. ***** Blu-ray and HD-DVD
- pjkli, on 03/07/2008, -6/+13It's been all over the gaming industry news that Sony now breaks even with the PS3 console due to smaller components, cheaper manufacturing, and the like.
- piper999, on 03/07/2008, -0/+7It does seem like history is repeating itself here with the crossover of disc formats and consoles. Dreamcast/PS2 is now Xbox 360/PS3 with the main difference being that the amount of money involved is so much greater.
- hammburglar, on 03/07/2008, -0/+7LOL @ sony fanboy, how naive!
you do realize sony and microsoft deal in more than just video games. i hope you also realize that microsoft allows sony to use their windows operating system on their computers. theyll do business like all other companies they arent rivals. because you like their system over microsofts. but they should fight to the death because video gaming is serious business. - trogdor282, on 03/07/2008, -0/+6Blu-ray also uses VC1
- inactive, on 03/07/2008, -1/+7That's live arcade edition. No HDD and it comes with pacman. You can only have about 4-5 save games on it, can't download updates and can't download extra content.
That can't compete with a ps3. - inactive, on 03/07/2008, -0/+6Yeah microsoft is going to tell some "next-gen" rep their business plans over a casual phone conversation. douche.
- volacide, on 03/07/2008, -0/+6I can't help but laugh at the thought of the majority of Sony's money coming from it's gaming devision. Sure, Sony does damn well when it comes to to their consoles but *****, Sony does so much from TVs, MP3 players, stereos, phones, it's just an enormous company.
The guy is right, it's win win, because even if people don't buy a PS3 if they buy a 360 they are highly likely to buy a Blu-Ray add-on in the near-distant future and ultimately help fund Sony. -
