- kraemer007, on 10/10/2007, -3/+50This is stupid. Look at the production date in the serial # BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE!
To see if the box you want has the new motherboard, check the serial number. Look at the LAST 5 DIGITS.
Example: if the last 5 digits are 62702 then
First digit = year
second two digits = week
last two digits = production location
So that would be a box produced in the 27th week of 2006.
So open the serial number slot on the side of the box and look for a serial number that ends in 0728 or higher. - ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Since when is Upside-Down a verb?
- cromulent742, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23It's a perfectly cromulent word
- pbaehr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11People have been upside-downing the English language here on Digg for as long as I can remember.

"Or as I call it 'DIY Xbox 360 Endoscopy'.
The lens should “focus around” all the small holes. Be sure to use a flash so it lights up the inside.
As you can see my XBox 360 Core, purchased in June with a build date on the faceplate of 11/07 does not have the new heat sink since we can see straight through to the side of the DVD player. Darn. Good thing I kept the receipt.
So now everyone can check their new Elites, Premiums and Cores to see if and when the new heat sinks started showing up in units. You can find a manufacture date behind the not-voiding-to-remove faceplate, which of course is just the date of the faceplate but should give some indication.

- justice7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9thats what i said too, until about a month ago.... your time will come. You deny it now, but it will.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Yup, my neighbor just contracted the red ring... out for 3 months. I gave him a key to my house so he can play w/ my Wii while I'm at work.
- LLaHood, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I Have had my Xbox360 since the first day it has come out..... it works perfect for me
- CamoChris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Oh wait you mean before you buy it, sorry.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah, but you have to open the box packaging before you can see that. You can view the serial without opening the box, in the store.
- Cerialthriller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"build date on the faceplate of 11/07"
is this an xbox 360 from the future sent back in time to save John Connor? - scrawl0522, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7and I thought I'd grown tired of all those Wii jokes...
- battletrax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If you want to watch some tv or maybe a bite to eat, you can come to my house.
Seeing as all your stuff is probaly jacked. - thoughtudied999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"*****"? What an un-clever nickname.
- blahtastic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, but if you've had one for a while and have to keep sending it back who knows what the hell you've got. They might have added a heatsink, they might not have. I just got mine back two weeks ago, I'm gonna go ahead and check the pictures.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6The RoD is the main thing keeping me from buying an Xbox 360, so I look forward to the day when I can buy one without having to worry about it.
- JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You don't like to verb adjectives?
- blocguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Not at all?
- allahuakbar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3moron - nowhere is it UPS's fault, they only do what MS pays them for.
- Bakkster, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6See if you have the new Xbox 360 heatsink without voiding the precious warranty
Or as I call it “DIY Xbox 360 Endoscopy”.
Now what?

The lens should “focus around” all the small holes. Be sure to use a flash so it lights up the inside.
And that's the way you doooo it!

Share what you find on your Xbox(s) below, and let’s get this nailed down! - DavidGX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2How did they "make us" do anything? You sir are an idiot.
- OtakuTom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Am I one of the only lucky people to have a first-gen that hasn't had a RoD? Are there that many still out there?
- grimeygutter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thats a first, someone recommending a ***** blog over the direct source.
- Dragonspawn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Me too, had it since launch, been used loads as its even used as a media center extender for TV. Never had a problem.
- Resiroth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Microsoft just spent a billion dollars extending the warranty by 3 years for everyone. I've had my xbox 360 for 2 years or so and even left it on overnight...no problems.
- jbsuperman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I wish I had a nice neighbor like you. I've never even played the Wii.
- keitarofujiwara, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2DL.TV and Diggnation both have staff that type "warrEnty" constantly on their articles and shows. It's ***** amazing!
- RagnerD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Next time I go the the doctor I'll be sure to take my xBox360. I wonder if my insurance covers this:)
- blackgt93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Um... isn't the build date of the 360 on the back near the serial number? I'm pretty sure that's where my mfr. date is.
- modifiedbears, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was being patient and the page was timing out. It did finally come up later though.
Anyway, it would be nice if he would've shown a picture of what it should look like instead of one without it. From what I can gather my 360 doesn't have it. http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/5527/360heatsinkcheckzc8.jpg - velvet396, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Site is up, just loads very slowly. Be patient. I'll put up a screen capture on my flickr and make a link here in the comments...
- post3r3r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I have bought games, like Shadowrun and Forza, in order to break it to be ready for Halo 3. So far no luck.
- xaxxon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Pretty sure that day is now. Just check the date info in the serial before you buy the unit (you can see it from the outside) like the comment above says.
- AnotherBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can understand that to some extent, but we're just about opening it up to look and see if there is a heatsink installed.
- JustSomeDood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Just go to Gizmodo
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/red-ring-this/check-if-your-360-will-die-in-one-easy-step-285667.php - Days, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They would if you installed an aftermarket product in the car which caused it to either a: be a liability to work on, or b: cause damage not covered under wear and tear of the car. Which is exactly why MS voids warranties for opening the 360 yourself.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If its not broken after three years... It is not going to break... duh....
- warped, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I still don't get why there isn't a recall to install this new heat-sync?? I guess I really don't care if my console lasts long enough to get a replacement for sub $200
- DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I prefer brokebox360 more for being a double entendre.
- Dorian822, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I know this is lame, but when exactly was the date that these new heatsinks were added? My Elite, which I got just at the end of last month, was manufactured 12th week of 2007 (Mfr Date 3/22/07). Am I safe?
- gotamd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I would think that you could also use a scale, since additional heatsinks should add weight. Of course, you'd need a very sensitive scale. I don't know what the weight difference is, but I doubt that most bathroom scales would cut it, especially since they can be miscalibrated.
- romanboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1are they called adverbs in english? they are in romanian.
- jon61575, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You'd have to compare it to one with the same DVD drive. I'm guessing the different DVD drives weigh slightly different.
- E7ernal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Those three red lights on my Xbox 360 aren't there to tell me I need a new console?
- Dorian822, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Muchos gracias.
The Elite I got, after countless friends begged me to get because of XBox Live (and the great games), is still new to me. It's loud, but not as loud as I'm hearing some folks say. It runs hot, but not say as hot as my laptop (that I've noticed).
So thanks again! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow, I dont get the loud complaint at all. The only time I notice the noise it makes is when the TV is off. Even then, the sound level is comprable to the sound of air moving through the walls when the AC is on.
People must be grasping at reasons to complain, naw that would never happen on digg. -
