- timfitz99, on 06/11/2008, -0/+72Saints Row was surprisingly good for a GTA rip-off. It looks like they are doing the smart thing with Saint's Row 2, which is to give it a decidedly different feel than GTA.
There is room for both, folks! We all win! - JasonTD, on 06/26/2009, -5/+73I have to be honest. I'm loving GTA4 and am about halfway through it now, but that Saint's Row 2 ad really hyped me for that game. It didn't make me think any less of GTA4; it just made me aware of lots of new stuff about SR2.
- Kireblade, on 06/11/2008, -0/+67feh, GTA4 is a big boy, it'll be fine...after all, it's all in good fun.
Reminds me of "Genesis Does what Nintendon't!" - tehjabba, on 06/11/2008, -11/+54It's not pompous, it's simply 'me 2' marketing riding the back of GTAs coat tails.
A good idea - for them - to milk it for all its worth since it sounds like the game's not ging to be that hot and probably wouldn't sell that well on its own merit. - bulazeem, on 06/11/2008, -4/+42Couldn't finish watching the trailer for saints row 2 because my favorite TV show came on while playing GTA
- Hetman, on 06/11/2008, -4/+37GTAIV is awesome. If saints row is half the game it is I will be impressed.
- eatkitten, on 06/11/2008, -2/+30I disagree. If you watch the actual ad, it's just emphasizing everything that wasn't good about GTA IV. Each point they make is valid. GTA IV looks great and has its fun moments, but there's a ton of absolutely annoying ***** as well. It seemed less full-featured (or customizable even,) than San Andreas. Yes, it's a Grand Theft Auto game, so it's still good on the whole, but I have to admit that I was disappointed in it. I think the Saints Row ad is just capitalizing on that frustration.
- cavie2002, on 06/11/2008, -2/+29they had me at spray sewage on pedestrians
- Snakedal337, on 06/11/2008, -3/+28That trailer actually looked pretty cool, but I have a lack of faith in saints row. the first one had more bugs than a mexican whore house. Now if Rockstar incorporated all that into gta, it'd be pretty bad ass.
On a separate note, those graphics looked really, really *****. - Shoegaze99, on 06/11/2008, -0/+22"There is room for both, folks! We all win!"
I agree 100 percent. Why some folks can't seem to wrap their head around this notion, I'll never understand. - megaton, on 06/11/2008, -2/+24The sadder thing is the state of our culture:
Show buildings blowing up? Cool!
People getting hit by trains? Awesome!
Blowing away citizens while dressed as a cop? Sweet!
Saying the word "*****"? NO!! That's naughty! - Scopitone, on 06/11/2008, -2/+22GTA4 had an incredible single player campaign and the multiplayer is just untouchable and flawless. But it seriously lacked in character customization, CAR HANDLING/customization, mission variety, mayhem, and a host of other things. I think the critics went a little ***** with their 10/10 reviews when the game was really more like 9/10.
We need games like Saints Row 2 to keep things competitive and better for gamers. - mr_wej, on 06/11/2008, -1/+20Now I'm a huge GTA4 fan, so don't get me wrong when I say this... but that ad was perfect! GTA has done an awesome job with the newest game but the bowling, darts, pool, dating, dinner??? Ya, those are all pretty lame, I'd love to see them get some creativity and make the friend/relationship system actually FUN, rather than a stupid chore. How about some friends that enjoy fire-bombing, or paintballing, or dirt-bike riding. Just because GTA is awesome doesn't mean there isn't A LOT of room for improvement!
- navster15, on 06/11/2008, -0/+18I see the Saints' Row ads to be no different than the "Genesis does what Nintendon't" ads or even the more recent "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" ads. Basically THQ is trying to position itself as the scrappy underdog to Rockstar's behemoth. I don't see anything pompous about that. Frankly, were it not for this ad I would have never given Saints' Row 2 a second thought. It just goes to show that the ad was very effective in raising awareness for the game.
- cryonix, on 06/11/2008, -0/+18when it comes down to it, GTA4 mastered the "free roam" aspect, but forgot. "what will people do when they aren't doing missions?" yeah bowling, darts, heli tours, ride the train. seriously not doing missions gets boring very fast, all other gta's had me spending more time dicking around than doing missions. GTA4 failed. There is even a damn gokart track but no gokarts. And whats with all the money? there is NOTHING to spend it on you get all your safe houses automatically, so theres no purchase of properties. clothes are unnecessary, food is cheap, there is no goal for doing the next mission for the money, just the 'story', which bored me. This GTA will be very forgettable compared to others to come.
- dafragsta, on 06/11/2008, -1/+17It might be riding on the coattails of GTA:IV, but it makes a valid point. Taking friends out on the town is NOT a deep and fulfilling experience. It feels like it just takes me away from playing the game. At the very least, it should not have been pushed onto the player. I don't know how many times I answered the phone just to hang up on people because I was sick of being pestered all the time.
- ChristophyBrown, on 06/11/2008, -3/+16Gotta love the Republican Space Rangers.
- DonSlice, on 06/11/2008, -2/+14Eh... The way I see it: If Saint's Row 2 is better than GTA4, it's better. If it's not, it's just not. From the looks of it, Saint's Row 2 is going to add more humorous gameplay than GTA4 (throwing people in front of trains), but who knows if it will be as polished.
- Shoegaze99, on 06/11/2008, -0/+11I agree completely. Much as I loved GTA IV -- it looked great, awesome worldbuilding and it had a strong story -- from the perspective of how much variety it offers in gameplay it's actually a regression for the series.
So Saint's Row is playing that up in touting their game. Big deal. - Shoegaze99, on 06/11/2008, -1/+12So according to this "analyst", the ad is pompous because GTA IV sold a bajillion copies?
Who farking cares? So what is it, wild popularity means you're insulated from playful jabs? Give me a break. Marketing like this is a PERFECT fit for games like this. The trailer was funny and fun and caught my attention. That means it did its job.
And yeah, I played GTA IV and loved it. Doesn't mean I don't recognize a great promotion when I see it. Saint's Row 2 looks like it'll be damn fun. If it's even half as fun as the first game -- which was a good enough GTA clone that Rockstar snatched ideas from them -- it'll be worth a look for folks who like the genre.
Pompous. Whatever, jackass. - Cockslap, on 06/11/2008, -1/+12bowling, darts, ***** racing (really, after you got the ferrari or lambo rip off....did you ever lose a race?), the shows (rehashed Kat williams?!), TV..... boring. The missions were decent but then the game just suddenly comes to a screeching halt. I was expecting things to start getting interesting when you kill whats his face after the shootout/motorcycle/helo chase. Wheres the rise to power? Wheres the I'm truly a bad ass and rich? Instead I'm running around town dating 2 people to get special powers, or hanging with my "bros" so they don't get pissed off at me (oh noes!). GTA4 didn't deserve the reviews it got. Its a decent game but its not even the best game in the GTA series. Too much boring ass *****, that if you don't do.... makes for a short game. The only thing I thought was fun (for about the first 10 minutes) was the multiplayer.... but if I want a good multiplayer shooter, I have COD4. I for one welcome some competition for GTA.
- SwedishNinja, on 06/11/2008, -0/+10Don't forget *****. Those adipose tissue filled, nippled gateways to DAMNATION!
- sevvo, on 06/11/2008, -0/+10Now let me be clear--I really like GTAIV, HOWEVER there isn't very much replay value. In fact, what's the point of amassing wealth, when there aren't really ginchy things to blow it on? I want Bellic to be blinged-out with gaudy garb, a fleet of cool cars, and mansions to stash them in. I understand that the series has taken a more realistic direction in terms of narrative, but the cheddar is lacking.
- ronster72, on 06/11/2008, -0/+8If Saints Row 2 and GTA4 came out on the same day I would have bought SR2
- fucknuggets, on 06/11/2008, -0/+8you sound like you're from 2001
- Snakedal337, on 06/11/2008, -1/+9Im just saying everyone was ripping on rockstar for GTAs graphics, yet those look like they were developed for the Gamecube or something
- Endlesswar2, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8wow i think i am actually gonna get that game now, considering how much gta 4 sucked. i've always been a huge fan of gta and i've never considered getting saints row, but seeing how disappointed i was with gta 4 it seems like a good idea to get it now. they are so right, the side quests in gta 4 are soo boring and after the story, there isn't anything fun to do. san andreas had hours and hours of gameplay after the story, gta 4 ends very abruptly.
- PHiZ187, on 06/11/2008, -6/+13:Shrug: THQ invest $100 Million into the art, story, voice-acting, motion-capture, and game engine and then you can compete on Rockstar's terms...
- Shoegaze99, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7So do you feel previous GTA games were for 13-year-olds, too? Because this all looks like stuff that was in previous GTA games but was cut out of GTA IV.
- cromulent742, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8Agreed. Unfortunately there's an increasingly large number of petulant, self-important people out there who are so closed-minded that they can't even entertain the possibility of anyone espousing a point of view different from their own.
- FTWmovin2canada, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7What else would you call a hyperlink?
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -2/+8I got bored of it by playing the multi-player. I loved the single player, but I really hate the multi. Unbelievably buggy and I haven't played a game that didn't lag. Plus it's pretty much the same thing over and over again.
- Barbarino, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7I'm half way thru GTA was well, but while the graphics are cool, SR1 was much much much more fun, thus SR2 is on my list.
- Scrappy1850, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7dugg for the use of my name
- decker12, on 06/11/2008, -0/+6That was an AWESOME trailer! I'll be buying SR2 for sure. SR1 was pretty fun (although it didn't have any real competition in the genre when it came out). I never managed to get 1000 achievement points on it though - it was one of the drug mule missions that held me up.
- MrHoopla, on 06/11/2008, -0/+6Ok big boy, have fun bowling.
- J16T3CH, on 06/11/2008, -0/+6Because they feel that if they say one game is good, its a diss on another, that and they're morons/fanboys. Like when people went nuts after they found out GTAIV was going to be a dual console release.
- bot001220, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7A better question would be: people still obsess over trivial ***** like this?
- drlha, on 06/11/2008, -0/+6So just ignore the calls from Roman and do the missions!
- trizzlelv, on 06/11/2008, -2/+7Dugg! Saint's Row was awesome, GTA4 was the best! Saint's Row 2 will be great, but probably not as good as GTA4, but definitely worth a buy.
- ManIs5, on 06/11/2008, -2/+7I'd give GTA4 about a 7 out of 10. It's good. But it's not exactly FUN most of the time. The missions are incredibly repetitive (motivation cutscene, then go kill somebody). San Andreas certainly wasn't realistic, but the fighter jet, the jetpack, the mission variety, etc. just made it a more fun world to play in.
I think I spent about two days with the original Saint's Row and traded it. The new one looks better by miles, and looks like it has the kind of crazy, reality-bending action that's sorely lacking in GTA4. Seriously, if I want to play darts, I'll go to my garage and play real darts with real people. - ConnerCarlson, on 03/24/2009, -3/+8original saints row was awesome. but it'll be next to impossible for them to get near what GTAIV has done. but nonetheless...i'm buying saints row 2
- decker12, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5The money aspect is a really bad flaw in the GTA4 story. Even though I have something like $600,000, Nico's always bitching about money and Roman's gambling and how he'll do any matter of incredibly risky stunts and missions if the price is right. If I had 600k in my bank account I don't think I would be out risking my life for $2500.
They shouldn't have given you so much money for doing the bank job mission with Packie. That mission, midway through the game, basically made all the money you get in the second half of the game worthless. - inactive, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5I think I got more than halfway, but I have kind of stopped playing too. Its just missing some of the cool extra stuff that kept me going in GTA:SA.
- CollapseControl, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5I can't wait to load up Saints Row 2. I really hope they don't take away the 2 player co-op campaign, that is going to be ***** awesome.
- Radica1Faith, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4Spraying ***** on people is okay also.
- macfan93, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4I completely agree. While the game is great, it lacks the mayhem ability of previous games. It took too much of a realistic turn. SR2 is saying that they can give the costumer mayhem again, like jumping off buildings. Whether or not they can deliver on that promise is a whole other discussion.
- copaceticZ, on 06/11/2008, -1/+5I have said since the day that GTA IV came out that Saint's Row 2 will be the game that puts it to sleep. Saint's Row 1 which is already surpasses GTA IV in almost every single way. Saint's Row 2 is likely to be amazing and I doubt i will ever buy another GTA after the latest.
- chubbybubba, on 06/12/2008, -0/+4I agree with you Endless. Once all the hype dies down people will realize how crappy GTA4 is. I love the GTA franchise from the beginning and I can honestly say GTA 4 driving is completely broken. I spent the majority of the game taking taxis everywhere. The distance blur effect is very irritating as well. In terms of gameplay, GTA vice and GTA san andreas are way better than GTA4.
- mlvassallo, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4Vice City is still the best game in the series when it comes to both style and Ray Liotta.
