- LawSchoolBound, on 11/09/2008, -7/+74GoW2 and Left 4 Dead are only going to help.
- DavidGX, on 11/10/2008, -14/+73Xbox 360 is where the games are.
- Georgy, on 11/09/2008, -8/+56No surprise there...
- pixelfox, on 11/10/2008, -8/+50Having just got an Xbox 360 after playing everyone else's console, I love it, but then again, I can understand how hardware issues would dampen the fun. Personally, I like the 360's games more, but everyone has different tastes.
- kinseyincanada, on 11/10/2008, -8/+43i have both a PS3 and a 360 and with owning both for multi-platform games i usually go with the 360 for achivements and if im paying for online i want to use it. Online the 360 is much better, and i dont mind at all paying 50ish a year for it, PSN is ok but not as good as Live. The only thing i really prefer over the 360 is that its ***** loud, the PS3 is whisper quite
- Velnich, on 11/10/2008, -2/+27[insert equally trivial counter point here]
- MCA2142, on 11/10/2008, -6/+29One thing I like about the 360 is the controller. I like how the left stick is placed higher than the dual shock 3, because it is more natural for me.
Also like the fact that Xbox 360 in most cases comes with a mic. I had the misfortune of playing Bad Company on the PS3 the other night, and that was the most silent gathering I had endured in recent memory.
Sure it may be loud as *****, but at least they made the 360 for gamers. And NOT to in a format war. Hence, the attachment rate is higher. - JMDupont, on 11/10/2008, -0/+21Considering new PS3s aren't backwards compatible at all I don't know if I'd put that in the PS3 advantage column.
- th3heretic, on 11/10/2008, -2/+22Ive played the L4D demo for 10 hours already, im itching for the release.
- DJShadow, on 11/10/2008, -13/+32Because the game selection is much better, paid xbox live is infinitely better than the free ps3 online, and the community is bigger, better, and more involved. But thats just my opinion.
- SpikeX, on 11/10/2008, -13/+32The only thing I will miss about my PS3 is Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet. That's it. 2 games. Everything else gets owned by the Xbox.
- Hellman109, on 11/10/2008, -10/+28Really? I have a 360 and had a Wii.
The Wii was a dust collector for a year before I sold it on Ebay for a stupidly high price (4 games 2 controlers with nunchucks for about the price of a new console and 2 top games...).
My 360 gets heaps of playtime, Madden a fair bit and FarCry 2 recently (just a rental), GTA4 got allot of game time, etc. Halo before that, you get the point.
I game on my PC the most, but the 360 is a kick ass console. - jasondefaoite, on 11/10/2008, -0/+17True. Only good thing is the New Xbox Experience allows you to install the games to the HDD, cutting out the noise from the DVD. I've tried this and it is considerably quieter.
- Whaines, on 11/10/2008, -0/+15Attach rate is important because the margin on games is much higher than the margin on consoles. In many cases companies will even lose money on every console sold and make up the difference in selling games and peripherals.
- nixpix66, on 11/10/2008, -19/+33[Insert Defensive Fanboy Comment Here]
- Shamrock13, on 11/10/2008, -1/+15That isn't the only reason why you're itching... Sorry about that..
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -2/+16Agreed, I love the 360 controller. I was never a fan of the PS1 controller, and since the sony controller has hardly changed since then I am still not a fan of it.
I was all set to love the Wii, I even lined up in Best Buys parking lot to get one on launch day. But I just never fell in love with it, and its been about a year since I have turned it on. I never even made it to the "fun with Wii Sports" stage. I wanted to love Metriod, but waving my arm around just got old. - kinseyincanada, on 11/10/2008, -5/+18theres one thing thats been bothering me about the PS3, in the console does not come with any high-def cables, not even component, i dont understand how a supposed high-def system does not even come with the cables to support the high-end graphics. Also i just bought a second controller and it doesnt come with a freaking charge cable!
- Smwbigboss, on 11/10/2008, -6/+18I just don't trust anybody that says "I have console x and y, and x collects dust and y is the second coming of Jesus" Chances are, its just more fanboy ***** and they never touched the other console in their life. Wii gets the worse treatment since its the most successful, and therefore the one to be the most defensive about if you have something else. If you talk to people in real life, you hear things completely different.
- machocheese34, on 11/10/2008, -3/+15what i hate is that the damn ***** usb cable it comes with is so damn short, i cant really play and charge my controller. Although i had to pay for my 360 play and charge kit, at the least the cable is plenty long
- chaosblade77, on 11/10/2008, -2/+13I guess it's just the console's glossy finish and black color, but my PS3 collects a LOT of dust.
- KrazyA1pha, on 11/10/2008, -0/+11That's covered in the article.
- supertom, on 11/10/2008, -4/+15In my opinion, your opinion is correct.
- dig1x, on 11/10/2008, -3/+13" I like how the left stick is placed higher than the dual shock 3, because it is more natural for me"
Its not more natural for _you_, its more natural for everyone. The PS3 controller is ergonomic failure.
Lookup anthropometric projection and resting state.
Your hand is in a more natural resting state when operating the Xbox 360 controller.
Its not you, its everyone. And, to those who would say "i prefer ps controller, that's fine; but it is because you are familiar with the poor design, that doesnt make it more natural and healthy (ergonomic). - Azerael, on 11/10/2008, -5/+14You must really, really like Wii sports.
To each his own, I suppose... - Velnich, on 11/10/2008, -0/+9I love my console gaming and even opted to get Fallout 3 on the 360, but like TF2, I'll be saving L4D for the PC (yes, the demo is very nice).
- nerdherder, on 11/10/2008, -1/+10Wow, how did i miss that. Makes sense now. Bury my face.
- whoamarcos, on 11/10/2008, -3/+12if you can afford a PS3 you shouldn't be complaining about 50 bucks for a year subscription to the best available online console experience.
- iruel, on 11/10/2008, -3/+11My 360 library already consists of 10 games plus a handful of XBLA games, which is the biggest console game library i've ever had. plus a $50 HD-DVD drive and a small HD-DVD collection acquired at bargain price
- DarkBlueAnt, on 11/10/2008, -1/+9I loved PS2 and hated original Xbox (Except for modding). Things have flipped to be excatly the opposite this generation...
Last generation, all the systems had a niche. Nintendo was the fun, family system. Xbox was the technologically advanced media center. PS2 was the cheapy cheap system with lots of great games for reasonable prices. Now Sony really forgot what they were all about and tried to pretty much rip off Xbox at every turn. I wish they would just go back to being the cheap system with lots of games, because they're really failing at trying to one-up Xbox. - MrFurious2k, on 11/10/2008, -1/+9It's worth pointing out that the Xbox 360 can now be had for under $300 with everything you've mentioned above (wireless rechargeable controllers, hard drive, live membership, etc). When you look at the list of exclusives or initial exclusive releases, the Xbox really shines. This is especially true concerning its online services. The deal with Netflix is going to be even more enticing.
That isn't to say that Sony doesn't have a good console. They do. The problem is that the cost is still extremely significant. I've been in the market for one as a Bluray player for a while. However, most major "brick and mortar" retailers only have one for $399 which is too expensive. While $399 may not seem like much for some, it's still a pretty sizable investment for many of us. - Thorlord, on 11/10/2008, -3/+11amazon has 13 months of XBLGold for $38... and free shipping on orders above $25
thats about $3 a month.
and for online gameplay that beats the crap out of what the PS3 offers.
as for your comaparison, i can do it too:
360: fun games, large library of games i want to play, great online gameplay, tons of interesting arcade game to buy cheap, LOVE the controller (cept the dpad on the controller, its *****), backwards comparable with my 22 xbox games that i own.
PS3: no exclusive games i want to play, similar graphics (not better), not backwards compatible with any of my PS2 games, controller feels awkward in my hands, piss poor online play.
notice how i only have my 360 to PLAY GAMES? don't give a ***** about HDDVD, don't give a ***** about noise (i don't notice it when playing games) don't give a ***** about browsing the web, hardware problems don't bother me as its fixed free every time. all i care about are games and that's where the PS3 is lacking for me. - steve186, on 11/10/2008, -1/+9Don't need to be bitter to realise they had a pretty awful failure rate.
- ASSASSYN360, on 11/10/2008, -1/+8I bought Saints row 2, fable 2, gears of war 2, and paid off left4dead. Thats 4 games in a little over a month. I wouldn't do that for another system on the market today.
- steve186, on 11/10/2008, -1/+8I'd say they are considered current-gen by now :P
Next gen is all PC until some new consoles come out and this godawful cycle starts all over again. - chaosblade77, on 11/10/2008, -2/+9My PS3 does not play PS2 games and it's very disappointing. Still, it was only $250.
- Valyn, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7"...and this godawful cycle starts all over again."
I love my 360, but I agree completely. - Gman1223, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7"
You're right; The Wii has nearly outsold both the PS3 and 360 combined. The Wii is in a class by itself. "
I'd actually put it in the same class as the PS2 (because it seems that it is geared to compete with the Wii these days). What's the count then? 140 Million vs 30 Million? And the PS2 has better games. - Smwbigboss, on 11/10/2008, -5/+12Tales of Symphonia 2 comes out Tuesday.
- warsongs7, on 11/10/2008, -1/+8[Insert sarcastic comment about both of you being losers here]
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -2/+9They are comparing the first 23 months of them since their release meaning that the X-box 360 coming out earlier makes no difference in this "analysis".
- sup34dog, on 11/10/2008, -7/+13I doubt that you do own both, because I own all 3 systems (wii, ps3, 360), and the 360 is definitely the best console.
These are my opinions on the consoles:
their relative rankings in terms of hardware reliability:
Wii = PS3 > 360
console noisiness:
PS3 > Wii > 360
software library:
360 > PS3 > Wii
...the ps3 and the 360 have about the same selection of games, but 360's exclusives make it more worth it.
The only 2 games that I own on PS3 are MGS4 and LBP (I've thought about getting Resistance, but Gears is better). All of the other games that I'd want to play on the system are also available on the 360, but with achievements and reliable community features.
I also find the 360's controller to be far, far better than both of the PS3's controllers.
I'll agree that the PS3 is completely worth it just for the fact that it's a PS1+2+3 and bluray player in one (I have a 60GB, the best kind - I don't know that I'd buy a new PS3 these days, since the new SKUs can't play PS2 games at all). I'll also agree that, as a media hub, I preferred the PS3 (the 360's fans are almost too distracting when using it as a media center), but I just got the 360's NXE yesterday (part of the preview program that I signed up for), and netflix streaming on it is incredible. - dandonia, on 11/10/2008, -3/+9insert "I'm much better than all you guys because I am above the console wars despite reading the article on attach rates which was obviously going to be the 360 because it had a year head start, which means it wasn't really news "
- Thorlord, on 11/10/2008, -1/+7interesting, id love to see your data
because mine say that 100% of people who get the RROD get another 360 within 2-4 weeks.
maybe its the 3 year warranty... - Ocelot13, on 11/10/2008, -2/+8no.
- MiserableTruth, on 11/10/2008, -1/+7Agreeing with skywake, here's a quote FTA that pretty much negates the entire article, and especially the headline:
"the Wii is in second place in terms of its attach rate, but could its staggeringly large number of hardware sales be throwing the relative strength of its software sales out of proportion? For instance, in a couple of other charts provided in the report, U.S. software sales for all three consoles are compared in their first 23 months of release. In terms of first-party sales, the Wii clobbered the 360 and PS3, with around 30 million units, compared to the 360 at a little fewer than 10 million, and the PS3 at around 5 million. It's much closer in terms of third-party sales, although the Wii still wins with sales close to 40 million, with the 360 near 35 million, and the PS3 down at a little fewer than 25 million."
So the Wii has sold more consoles, first-party games, third-party games, and (likely because of the nunchuck attachment, WiiFit board, that totally pointless gun they have, and the equally pointless steering wheel) peripherals. - CollapseControl, on 11/10/2008, -7/+13HD-DVD/BLU-RAY/HDMI, all that HD is not needed to have an enjoyable game session. Any true gamer knows that it's all about the gameplay and having fun, not how pretty and clear it looks.
$50 for a year subscription is nothing, especially for the amount we're willing to pay for a new retail game. Also, gamers who do not want to play online don't have to pay anything.
A web browser is nothing special. The best thing I did with the Wii's Web Browser was log into xbox.com and see what my friends were doing on their 360's. As well as send them messages and compare games, you can't do that on ANY web browser for the PSN.
Don't get your panties all bunched up just because millions of gamers out there enjoy the console you don't. The 360 may not have a good hardware record, but that doesn't matter when the software (the games, the online, the community, the marketplace, the support, the content) is all top notch and delivers over 10 million gamers a great time.
The PS3 is a good console, i'm sure, but why would I waste money on getting a 3rd console to sit next the 360 and not get used? With all the friends I have gaming on the 360, it'd be plain stupid to abandon them and play alone on the lackluster PSN service. - inactive, on 11/10/2008, -7/+12I love my wii... but lets face it... Nintendo's own games are the only reason to buy the system. I can not think of more than 3 games not made by nintendo on that system I would want.
The 360 just has better games... Or at least more games I can play that are better. Nintendo imo needs to get rid of the ***** friend code bull *****... It won't make the online better than the 360, but it would be better that the ps3 network......
GIVE ME ***** SHEN MU3!!!! before I lucky hit somebody's face. - duniyadnd, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5Why can't the actual site that did the research be linked?
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3841/the_mus ... - stk198323, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5Thanks, I really needed to read a totally random person's life in details!
