Um, you're back in the original spot. - netdroid9, on 09/08/2008, -3/+27EDIT: Wall of text warning, sorry.
Well, the current comments aren't showing much hope for the future of this submission. Let me clear things up for those who're here to spread *****:

Wait what the ***** is my comment box doing? Is this the bouncing comment box problem everyone's talking about? It looks like it's having a giant sex party and everyone's throwing up. ***** it, I'm going to notepad.
*Ahem*: Microsoft knew about the flaws in the 360 because senior engineers raised them, and also because the 360s were coming off the manufacturing line with an initial yeild of approximately 10-20%, which is to say only 10-20 boxes out of a hundred actually worked. Now, this is kinda bad, but most devices start with a low yeild, even if 10-20%'s a bit lower than normal. They figured it would go up; and it did, but it took a fair while. Not only did the boxes start with a low yeild (leading to the Xbox 360 shortages that occured soon after it's released), but the testing machines used on the assembly line were themselves tested insufficiently, meaning that a huge number (something along the lines of 60%) of the released 360s broke down a year or two after being sold. Hence the warrenty extention.
Now, most of these problems appear to be a result of price-saving measures introduced when Steve Balmer became CEO and decided that the Xbox series should be more profitable (as the original Xbox was supposedly sold at a loss, in order to gain a foothold in the market). It's kinda ironic when you think about it, since the low yeild and the large return rate mean profits would suck.
BTW: Most of this is based off of this massive (comparatively) article here: http://venturebeat.com/2008/09/05/xbox-360-defects ... read it for more info. - inactive, on 09/08/2008, -2/+24....What?
- acis1, on 09/08/2008, -8/+28I went through 4 360's in under a year before I went ahead and pawned it. I'll stick with PC games.
- OneLess, on 09/08/2008, -1/+19It's still a massive pain in the ass after paying several hundred dollars for a console. I damn well expect it to work correctly and not have to deal with sending it to M$ for a repair or replacement.
- readme, on 09/08/2008, -4/+22It was really slimy of them to screw early adopters by pushing units that were known to have a design flaw. Nearly everyone I know with a unit manufactured before July 2007 has had it RRoD at least once. Some have up to five units go south on them. Was the black eye the brand name has taken over RRoD worth a five million unit lead over Sony? I guess we'll see at the end of the generation.
- LogicBomB, on 09/08/2008, -1/+18So we have to endlessly find new dead horses? Endlessly performing step 2 just seems easier.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -5/+21That is horrible grammar. You didn't fix it.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -2/+18whats funny is how many people stuck with the xbox even after 1 2 or even 3 or more red rings of death and kept spending money replacing it if Microsoft made them instead of going to a more stable system like the Wii or PS3
- sonics99, on 09/08/2008, -8/+23Microsoft released a product that was buggy , defective , and unfinished to beat the competition to market???
HOLY F'N SHIAT STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!! - SOS84, on 09/08/2008, -8/+22Why is this news? It was painfully obvious that MS rushed the 360 market within six months of its release. The guys at MS knew they had to get it out when they did are it would have gone the way of the Dreamcast within 18 months of release if they did not beat the PS3 to market. The funny thing is, they only delayed the inevitable. Sony will overtake MS in install base and total sales by next summer and they will have to find a specific niche to fill so they can try to minimize their losses. MS is almost assured of losing money on the 360 thanks to the RROD. Sorry MS fans but this is likely the last XBox.
- bogatash, on 09/08/2008, -1/+15Step 4: ??????
Step 5: Profit - Kelmon, on 09/08/2008, -0/+14Pardon? You must either be very tolerant or just have low expectations. Modern consumer electronics simply should not fail, particularly if you are paying a lot of money for it.
- bigpun, on 09/08/2008, -1/+14thanks for the LOL
- ayeroxor, on 09/08/2008, -1/+13Paul is a perfect example of the type of person consumer electronics manufacturers are hoping to turn us all into. A good consumer should expects things to fail and not complain.
- fadetoone, on 09/08/2008, -2/+14But hey, they got it out before PS3 and Wii. That's all that matters, right? Right?
- jokerfest, on 09/08/2008, -1/+13This post is awesomely horrible :)
- flickr, on 09/08/2008, -3/+14To quote countless MS fanatic douche-bags:
"I put up with the crappy hardware because there aren't -any- good games on other consoles."
Please excuse me while I get back to playing MGS4, Warhawk, PixelJunk Eden and GT5P. - kent1146, on 09/08/2008, -6/+17Narrator: A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
Business woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?
Narrator: You wouldn't believe.
Business woman on plane: Which car company do you work for?
Narrator: A major one.
Fight Club taught me all I needed to know about launching faulty products as-is and dealing with the repairs + fallout, versus the cost of redesign or recall. - DarkShroud, on 09/08/2008, -0/+11Way to go dumb ass, you just signed your 360's death warrant.
- redfred18t, on 09/08/2008, -2/+12Yeah exactly. And if anything, you're walking into the 360. Damn people need to learn their GEOMETRY!
- fuzzynyanko, on 09/08/2008, -2/+12The article said something scary: it said that the 360 could actually have been cheaper by now if it wasn't for the RRoD issue
- Kelmon, on 09/08/2008, -1/+9"and you can be sure this ***** won't be happening again for the Xbox 720"
Why would you say that? If anything all this has proven that they can release a shoddy product to get head start on the competition and fix things later. It's not like people stopped buying the console or there was a recall (as there should have been). Put another way, I certainly would not bet against it.
To be honest, I am more worried about other manufacturers doing this now that they've seen Microsoft effectively get away with it. - KrustyTClown, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8You are correct. Digg used to be Anti PS3. Everybody that's been on here for awhile know's Collapsecontrol, TRUSPECT0R, Kingoonie, and USERNAME9000 are the biggest Trolls. I believe TRUESPECT0R has seen the light and nolonger bashes the PS3. But CollapseControl will always be a blind MS fanboy.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 09/08/2008, -1/+9Lol, the comment box does that all the time, it's really annoying. Digg admins, please fix it, it's been like this for months now and it's about time it gets fixed.
- Kelmon, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8It's pretty scary stuff. OK, the console fails - I have to admit that it wouldn't make a huge impact in my life. But if you accept it there then where does it end? Do you expect any device that you buy to fail and have to be sent back to the manufacturer for weeks on end? There's a lot of stuff that would be a big deal to me if it broke down.
Heck, I remember the good ol' days when you could buy a games console and never have to worry about it overheating. Now I should shrug my shoulders and accept it? Bugger that for a game of soldiers. - DarkShroud, on 09/08/2008, -2/+10You guys are still 360 trolls. CC you're full of garbage, dig was very anti-PS3 for a very long time. You 360 whores would come into every damn PS3 thread to troll & spam FUD.
- absofveal, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9I'm sorry, ONLY about 35%? You make it seem like that's an acceptable figure. Imagine if ONLY35% of the world's early iPods crapped out, or ONLY 35% of a car maker's cars would overheat and die. There'd be a much bigger fuss than has been kicked up about the RRoD.
- Jared80KA, on 09/08/2008, -1/+8My first generation out-of-warranty 360 just RRoD'd this weekend. Luckily, I found a free online guide to fix the heatsink problem and spent 5 bucks on new parts - and I'm back up and running (for how long, I can't say).
Nice design choice, Microsuck. - inajeep, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9Yes we all know they had issues. MS lied about it until they could do something about it. Now why doesn't someone publish an article about all those people who keep getting refurbs that crap out after a few months or less. People on their 4th or 5th replacement or worse(8 I think is the max so far). The problem is QA or is it the design? Elites are still failing too. As for me, I'm on my 2nd. My launch unit rrod'd 4 months in and my replacement was a new one via warranty w/ EB. That one lasted over a year and was repaired under warranty a couple of months ago for a rrod. I guess I'm more upset for all my online buddies I game with whose woes I keep reading week after week. It's one thing to have MS admit there was a problem and the resolved it and extended the warranty. But to have new units and refurbs still failing. There is something else we are not being told.
- laserdog, on 09/08/2008, -1/+8That is the worse part of the article, that the guy is pretty much saying "I'd do it all again to be first to market".
- NekoJames, on 09/08/2008, -5/+11Of course they knew about it.
- MiDri, on 09/08/2008, -3/+9I agree that the 360s have been updated, I however; do not agree that only 35% of launch 360s will die -- I would estimate it closer to 70-80%. They will die -- just will take longer depending on how well you take care of them. (The solder they used was cheap and not cooled properly causing cracks and over time they will fail.)
I thought mine was going to be fine, however; 3 weeks ago -- BAM RROD, and my 360 has always been in a well ventilated area and was taken care of. - LeviTheSmith, on 09/08/2008, -1/+7WTF That doesn't even make sense.
- philhatesyou, on 09/08/2008, -1/+7Battered wife syndrome. He loves me, you just don't understand.
- laserdog, on 09/08/2008, -4/+10Maybe that's because you haven't turned it on in 2 years?
That, or maybe the unicorn living inside it fixed some of the weak solder joints for ya. - ATLien74, on 09/08/2008, -0/+6You are stupid.
- OwdenBowden, on 09/08/2008, -3/+9Just gave you a Digg because you had the balls to actually tell everyone that you are getting ready for the "Festival".
Other than that - it is in your best interest not to joke about 9/11 for the next 20 years. Time heals wounds but with this it still hurts a bunch form many. - BoneheadFarker, on 09/08/2008, -4/+9Of course they did. That's what service packs are for...
- darwinwins, on 09/08/2008, -1/+6"fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice (three times, four times, etc., etc.), i'm a dumbass."
- Kelmon, on 09/08/2008, -1/+6With all due respect, at least I am providing numbers. So far you haven't backed up your claim with anything.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5My PS3 has been left on since F@H was released, and it's still running just fine.
- darwinwins, on 09/08/2008, -2/+7after all that, you still expect MS to be a success in this field after their abject failure? i don't own any console and pretty sure that i will never buy MS hardware. ever. especially after the way they've handled the 360. you are by text-book definition, a fan boy.
- flickr, on 09/08/2008, -3/+8PC gaming is fantastic but to be fair there are much better-made, more reliable game consoles out there than the 360.
- Toxigen, on 09/08/2008, -1/+6pot, meet kettle
- totorototoro, on 09/08/2008, -1/+6"In response to what Microsoft is calling an "unacceptable" failure rate during the past several months, the company is extending the warranty coverage for the Xbox 360 from one year to three years."
Not specifically every Xbox, just an unacceptable number :p - DarkShroud, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5Fanboys are still in denial.
- santasing, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5@FF and @CC
You lost. ***** off. - readme, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4Check your power supply. If it says 175W you're ok. If it says 230W then you have the older design. Keep it well ventilated and clean to reduce the risk of RRoD.
