Red ring of death returns at GDC 08 watch!

bbc.co.uk — Microsoft wants consumers to believe that its problems with the Xbox 360 console in terms of hardware failure are over. But wandering through the Game Developers Conference halls and it's clear that the problem persists. On Microsoft's own stand at the show one of the demo consoles has a rather familiar problem - the red ring of death.

    - In the next station, you get to package your dead machine up in the "coffin" box, using real tape! Careful!
    - The next station is a miniature UPS store, where you get to hand it over to the clerk, where he comforts you, telling you that you're not alone.
    - Finally, there's a waiting area, where you get to sit for three weeks, NOT playing any games - scary!
    - If you're Extra Lucky, you get to do the whole thing again!

I was waiting for the falcon chip to come out and plenty of users testing it to see if the RROD issues were resolved. I have a PS3 and a Wii, so it's not that I'm too cheap to buy it. I just refuse to buy ***** quality hardware that I will likely have to ship back and forth later.

  • Squidly1, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5I had my 360 die on me a couple of months ago and I got totally new unit in three weeks (they even gave me my custom shell back). I have since been tempted to drill a huge hole in the side and mount a 120mm fan on it (low noise, high cooling).
    As a PS3 owner (I have a Wii, too), I have run that sucker non-stop crunching Folding@Home numbers (and played a few games) and had *no* heating issues. Is it quality of manufacture or quality of design that allows me to do that? Hmmmm....

  • samdu, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5MS didn't extend the warranty (only for RRoD, mind you) three years out of the kindness of their hearts. They did it in order to avoid a class action lawsuit.
  • elliotys, on 02/19/2008, -3/+7Gotta say the hardware problems are *****, and shouldn't have happened, but I think microsoft did a great job with their extended warranty. For me it was real easy, my xbox disc drive ***** up, called up xbox live, sent in box, got new one in a month. It's definitely not ideal for them to break in the first place, but SO FAR my replacement hasn't skipped a beat.

    Im almost more worried if it would had been a more rare occurence, it would have gotten less publicity, and thus no compensation from microsoft.
