- paulbram, on 10/11/2007, -4/+114Thanks Microsoft. I'm sure this wasn't a cheap decision, but it was the right one.
- Matanguero, on 10/11/2007, -16/+50Does anyone has this weird feeling of love for Microsoft? It is sooo weird...
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31It's about time. Credit to Microsoft for doing this but it really should not have have been a problem in the first place.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30That is great news.
One question is, are the new Xbox360s being shipped today "fixed"? - nextag82, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26now i'll buy one
- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Definately the right decision. I think if they ended up not addressing this issue then consumers would have lost almost all confidence in the reliability of the xbox brand. If MS were to release another system no one would have bought any launch systems and they would be out of the running. I think the $1 billion is a smart investment and necessary for the survival of the brand. The 3 year warranty gives me peace of mind.
- taraba, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13So all the launch systems just got pushed to Nov 2008. Nice. I've got another 1.5 years to break this thing now.
- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19Amazing. HUGE kudos to Microsoft for this.
- jessieeax, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15its about time. but there's more issues with this console than the 3 flashing red lights. i just lost mine because it started giving me "unplayable disk" errors but no 3 flashing red lights. im out in the cold.
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Reply abuse (I apologize):
Good News: 1800-4MYXBOX is aware of these changes, so if you end up calling them you'll get someone who actually knows about the warranty changes.
The Bad News: 4-6 weeks to get your console back (at least that is what was quoted to me) - bunk3rk1ng, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9This is true, but the flashing red lights are by far the most common 360 failure.
- litheon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Basically, it covers only the "three red lights" general hardware failure indicator and all repair costs associated with it. They're still maintaining the current warranty procedures, which are specific to certain regions, for all other issues.
- chubbybubba, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I hope they fixed the problem. I appreciate a 3 year warranty but would prefer not having needed one.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10With bandaids I think, a new heat sink etc... That said, this is a smart move on the Microsoft's part, and you have to give them credit for fessing up and doing the right thing. 3 years is a reasonable amount of time, I think. I'm still waiting for the smaller chip size, and hopefully redesigned board to buy a 360, but I'm much more inclined to get one now. I have so many PS3 games coming out that I'll be busy for the next six months anyway. I sure hope they come out with the shrunken chips on the 360 soon though.
I'm guessing the billion dollar hit makes it MUCH less likely they'll be doing a price drop anytime soon. - bunk3rk1ng, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7He said in the interview numerous times that they would get a refund....
- TheADOGuy, on 10/11/2007, -10/+16This is great news. Too bad it will cost $80 to change the battery if it dies...wait...that's not Microsoft...that's Apple...my bad ;)
I can't decide, an iPhone or a PS3? Same money.... - jostheller, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11I am reminded of something Chris Farley said in one of his movies... how did it go? hmmm... I think it went something like :
"Here's how I see it. A guy puts a guarantee on the box 'cause he wants you to fell all warm and toasty inside. Ya think if you leave that box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter. The point is, how do you know the Guarantee Fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? 'Building model airplanes' says the little fairy, but we're not buying it. Next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser and your daughter's knocked up, I seen it a hundred times. why do they put a guarantee on the box then? Because they know all they solda ya was a guaranteed piece of *****. That's all it is. Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for right now, for your sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality item from me." - johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10But notice that it *only* applies to the Red Ring of Death issue - if the hard drive died, the DVD drive doesn't work (a far more common affair according to some people I've talked to), or anything else, then you're still screwed.
A step in the right direction, but this should be for *all* problems with the 360 to show their customers the same level of loyalty that they've shown to Microsoft. Either way, I'm still waiting another year before I pick up a 360 - just in case there's any other "gotchas" that show up by then. - sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If you live in California then it's refundable, prorated of course.
- IEatEmoKids, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7No ***** way.
I ripped mine apart to fix it yesterday.
Great. - mace2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8That's good.. but as a potential buyer, I'm still waiting for them to revise the hardware so that I don't have to use the service.
- HawkTail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Which wouldnt be Sony, thats for sure. Is everyone forgeting how often PS2's broke down? What about PSP's? I guess everyone can forget about the whole dead pixle on the LCD problem that Sony ignored...
- SonicBoom1000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Microsoft should have done this a long time ago, but at least they did it. I'm still holding off on the 360 because so many of them are defective, and it is a pain in the ass to send Microsoft the console for 2-4 weeks to fix. The PS3 and the Wii have less than one percent failure rate, while the 360 has a whopping 33%! That is just unacceptable.
- homerjs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4About time..and to all you dicks out there who doubted us 360 owners saying we were whiners and full of BS... M$ thanks for finally owing up to this "3% " failure rate
- illustrick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4wtf, what about the people who had to buy a new a 360 cause they couldnt get theirs fixed. i had to buy a new one cause mine was "irrepairable"
- Irvulous, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8My launch 360 broke just a few weeks ago. This is unbelievable. Big ups to Microsoft.
- mavranos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This is my official apology. I became a believer only when mine died.
So this is me - the dick- saying "I am sorry I doubted you. Please for give me." - stung47000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Wow, great news. I've never had a problem with my 360 but I actually hope mine breaks now so I can get it back before Halo 3.
- bunk3rk1ng, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3From what I understand of the 3 red lights. Hard drive failure will give you the three red lights. Also the DVD drive not working sounds like a general hardware issue. Which he said will be covered. Just because the three red lights don't come up doesn't mean i wont be covered. I would call and ask them before saying it won't.
- mavranos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Did the x-clamp replacement on mine a month ago- So my excitement is tempered a little. Sucks to be us.
- Haggertus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I wonder if I can get my shipping money back. They fixed my 3 red lights for free but I had to pay to ship it to them.
- grumbel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Since Microsoft isn't telling as the real one, its as accurate as it gets. At the very least its a lot more accurate then Microsofts 3%, which was after all nothing but a lie.
- knodi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sucks to be you.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Most new 360s have a much improved cooling system for the GPU (which is the cause of the screwups). Also, any repaided ones get the better cooling added too.
- mandarin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3too late for you, not for the others.
- Griffology, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3my PSX I had to flip upside down to make it read the games, remember the misaligned laser problem?
- drakino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm betting there was more behind the scenes going on with this then has come out. Most of the 33% failure rate numbers were coming out of reports supposedly from retailers like EBGames who sell extended warranties and were taking losses with the 360. So, odds are, they were starting to look into solutions, including a possible lawsuit, one that would likely spin into a full fledged class action lawsuit. So, here we are about a week or two after these reports started surfacing, and MS announces a 3 year warranty and refunds to those who had their units fixed already. Two weeks doesn't seem like long enough to assemble lawyers and evidence needed for a court case, so MS was moving quick to avoid the bad press such a suit would bring.
So by announcing this prior to any court issues, they come out looking like the good guy, even if they were shipping shoddy engineered devices to people. Definitely a good move on their part, albeit a costly one.
To put this in perspective of how much money MS is losing, Sony could drop the price of the PS3 $100 without a similar reduction in cost to manufacturer one (aka, take a full $100 loss on every unit above whatever loss is there already), and they would have to sell 10 million units before losing as much money as Microsoft is. This is a bit under the entire amount of units Microsoft has sold to date (11 million). Really makes you wonder if MS is still going to decide it is worth it to try and be in the games market after this generation. - richlizard24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I called today and got the same quote for the return of my console. It sucks, but at least it will be fixed.
- byronm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It does work.. launch day 360 and no problems.
- kylesellers, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6So does that mean I wasted my money on a 2 year Product Service Plan at Best Buy?
- ibone, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8 Some people will never be happy. They basically take it in the ass and own up to their mistakes and people still rag on about it.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Yes, that means you wasted your money.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Get the PS3, there are a lot of great games coming out. Wait for iPhone 2.0 and save yourself a lot of headaches. The PS3 is a great machine, and if you have an HDTV then the bluray makes it a no brainer in my opinion.
- kylesellers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I just looked into that, and you're right! Funny how they never mention that up front...
- eightyd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2you could try!
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Go PS3. I waiting for Iphone nano myself. :) just kidding
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No...they fixed the design by adding a new heatsink...it shouldn't be a problem anymore. On top of the 3 year warranty that's a good deal.
- bunnymanjp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2so this only applies to new 360's?
or existing also - eightyd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2existing. So, because they 360 hasn't been out for three years, every 360 in existence.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Does anyone happen to know if this applies to consoles that have already been opened as well? Being that I thought I was out of warranty time I had a 3rd party look at it but it died again shortly afterward. I don't think I should be punished because I was forced to look elsewhere for repair.
