- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -1/+53Is there a way to tell which have the second heatsink installed based off serial number or such?
It's be really important to make sure you're getting a 'fixed' model. ( Assuming its fixed. ) - jdoc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+46Skip the ***** blog spam : http://benheck.com/07-12-2007/inside-the-xbox-360-elite

This means nothing for people who want a 360 until it can be determined which serial numbers have the new sinks. The majority of units on the shelves today don't have these. - totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25Yeah, me too. In fact, how about 2 heat sinks AND the 65nm process, just to make sure.
(although the chipmaker now claims they are working on 45nm chips for the Xbox360) - LiquidChimera, on 10/10/2007, -21/+42Too little too late, give me 65nm

I'm not saying it's not a large problem but there are enough people out there with no problems. A class action lawsuit would be absolutely ridiculous considering ms already gave everyone a 3 year warranty.
- Walkboss, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24No.

- Ub3rg33k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Why are you digging me down? Show me where its proven that this fixes all the problems. I personally hope it does work because I've been holding off on buying a 360 till they get all these issues cleared up. Since MS is mum on exactly what is wrong and exactly what they're doing to fix it, how can anyone say this is the end-all be-all answer? The descriptor is inaccurate, plain and simple.
- profingersk8er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8haha..it's funny watching xbox fanboys digging him down, is the TRUTH that hard to bare?
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9"Ever since Microsoft admitted that every single XBox 360 sold has something that will cause them to fail no matter what"
That is absolutely false. It's sad that you don't read past the digg headlines for your news. The "source" for that was nobody. - abcdefghij, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7tee hee! way to include something as an 'upgrade', something that should have been there in the first place.
- FullBleed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6SCREWWWWWW YOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!
- THEMACGOD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6My Original, launch-day 360 still works like a champ... Zero problems.
My 'brand new' Gamestop 360? Well, one day after the 7 day return policy (never buying from there again) my drive stops working - won't recognize anything in the drive.
Send it in, get it back 3 weeks later. Played my Elite 1 week out of 4 (the time that I 'owned' the console).
Last week, my Ethernet port dies. They don't even have any case files of this happening. And this is on the second, completely different Elite they sent me. So, I've gotta wait for them to send me a 'new' Elite that will break in 8 days - 2 months time.
I'm glad I didn't sell my first 360 to my friend like I was planning on... Now I have a backup system.
*****' A. - acid0426, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I'm just going to wait till November, duct tape my Elite, and keep it on for six days. Let me see those 3 red lights baby. Hopefully my replacement is balla.
- superdupergc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6dont listen to these fools! i got the gist of what you were saying and i'm upgrading to elite now!
- riffola, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7My original Elite died just short of three months after purchase, I had to hunt for a replacement at Best Buy here in NYC since the Elite was sold out at every single store. Finally found one at a store on Long Island.
The new Elite is made by FGUA and although it was assembled in March 2007 and comes with the Hitachi drive, it has two heatsinks and a significantly longer network cable. - TKn00b, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9I'm sure that the decision to initially have just one heatsink was not because of a design flaw, but because a cost analysis decision.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No, they're going to be 65nm and they're about to start production on them. 45nm is projected in 18 months.
- Walkboss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I've had my system since January '06 without so much as a falter. My 360's ventilation isn't anything special. It isn't cramped or anything but I don't have fans blowing on it either. Also about the "fans": I've heard some nasty things about the Nyko Intercooler (http://gaming.engadget.com/2006/10/27/nyko-intercooler-scorches-xbox-360-consoles/). Just keep your 360 dusted and don't be stupid about where you put it.
- vawksel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I wrap my 360 in layers of hot towels before gaming, it seems to help it keep warm. I think people have the ring of death problem all backwards, it's not its too hot, it is that it gets too cold.
Layers, people, layers. - BabyWookie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I just duct-tape the exaust holes myself. Don't want any dust getting in there.
- riffola, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Because I had a Best Buy Product Replacement Plan, swap for a brand new one many times in the first year and then once in the second year.
The lot no. is 0723 which marks the first of the new two heatsink versions. As per some informed posters at Xbox.com forums, FGUA was assembling the new GPU heatsink Elite back in March while FDOU and CSON were used to ship to stores. FGUA built up a stock pile during the months of March, April, May and June, it was only in June that FDOU and CSON started to make the Elites with two heatsinks. So when you buy an elite you should look for one made by FGUA or a lot # greater than 0723.
You can read more about this at: http://forums.xbox.com/13882627/ShowPost.aspx - plizard, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11you think if ms would have spent the time to test and build the product better - this would have been done initially.
- naio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And let's not forget the hooker with 3 *****!
- jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's a design flaw, the amount of money they have to pay out for warranties is huge (~ $1 billion ), that would break any cost analysis.
- DarKnight90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4How dare you!
- itspuddingtime, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6total recall is much more awesomerer than your ugly face
- profingersk8er, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6description correction:
"newer Elite models of the Xbox 360 now have 2 heatsinks which *should* prevent GPU overheating." - Kidsturk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Any news on whether it's not just the Elites?
- saltinekracka20, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ROFL, I just thought of him saying that. "Give these people ayar!" classic.
- DavidGX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've got my own weapons. let's go!
- UlicBelouve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes, good ventilation is really all you need. I have a launch one that has held up really well so far. For cooling solutions, don't know about the Intercooler. Heard bad things about it b/c it is inline with the power brick, and can cause scorching, etc. Go with a USB cooler if you really want. I have used a generic PC/Laptop USB fan to increase airflow around it. There are some good PC fans that are outstanding if you hook them to a spare PSU. Done that in the past, but not needed as of recent.
- espion4ge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Or, they scratch disks if you have a faulty TSST drive and don't shake the console at all.
