- onesiccaprilia, on 06/02/2009, -12/+95Wii killer? I think so if it works as well as it looks.
- pimpofpixels, on 06/02/2009, -12/+79I've a lot of experience in computer vision technology, and I'm guessing that this is going to be a frustrating piece of *****.
That type of technology is not easy to do, requires tons of calibration, and very specific lighting conditions to do well.
Otherwise, you're in store for an extraordinarily buggy and unresponsive experience.
I won't know for sure until trying it for myself, but I'm highly skeptical about this one becoming more than a novelty. - PintOfGuinness, on 06/02/2009, -2/+59I'm looking forward to trying what dresses look good on my mates.
- matsura, on 06/02/2009, -7/+63Let's see how long until Microsoft makes it work right.
- tault, on 06/02/2009, -10/+60The wii has good games?
- taxman, on 06/02/2009, -6/+52The wii has games?
- RupertPupkin22, on 06/02/2009, -2/+44Seem like no controller could get frustrating from time to time,
- PoliticalMan922, on 06/02/2009, -15/+56If it does destroy the Wii, oh well. How many good games does the Wii have?
- ShadowMarth, on 06/02/2009, -15/+52Ugh.... People... Have you learned nothing? First: There is zero chance this is a Wii-killer for one reason: the Wii has already won. As annoying as it is to us core gamers, the Wii has outsold all the competition by an enormous margin. A new eyetoy isn't going to topple it.
- Omniconcious, on 06/02/2009, -3/+36wii?
- IAmRoot, on 06/02/2009, -2/+31Since it's new, does that make it Project Neonatal for a while? And will it ever grow up?
- RyGiL, on 06/02/2009, -2/+31?
- Chubbly, on 06/02/2009, -10/+36See, this would never work. I study this type of technology, and it just isn't at the right level. It would also require the near 100% penetration to make a difference, otherwise it will suffer from the split-user base problem. Developers will put this feature in, but can't fully realise its potential (make it as immersive as possible) as not everyone has it. And the cost of making some thing substantial would require a ridiculous amount of money, for what return?
Better to save this tech and integrate it into the Xbox360 2. - RoroCo, on 06/02/2009, -2/+28.
- cheesehound, on 06/02/2009, -3/+28Man, the video looks cool, but thinking about actually using this thing gives me flashbacks to the no-hands radio in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Also, how the hell will it know to ignore the jackass sitting next to me that thinks it's funny to wave at the screen? - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+24Actually, I work for the company that makes this software (GestureTek, look 'em up.) We've got technology you've never seen before and patents you don't have the rights to, so it's not surprising you think computer vision technology is a "frustrating piece of *****".
It's been really hard not to talk about this project due to my NDA for the past year! ;-) - netdroid9, on 06/02/2009, -0/+21With no controller to bash, I'll have to revert to mindless violence!
- meruru, on 06/02/2009, -5/+25I agree, but there's no way it's going to work that well in real life
- RudeTurnip, on 06/02/2009, -2/+20You had me at "beating up an old, feeble man."
- dalectrics, on 06/02/2009, -1/+18Thats what wii all do.
- dwats32, on 06/02/2009, -3/+20worth watching it to see those horribly lame people in the ad. I couldn't even finish watching it because of the people. If I was playing a game on a couch and someone was saying "C'mon team, we can do this!" they would get a punch in the throat
- uskomaton, on 06/02/2009, -10/+25This will fail.
If I wanna do sports I will go outside. - 4ndr3wk, on 06/02/2009, -2/+17From MS themselves, sounds promising:
Compatible with any Xbox 360 system, the "Project Natal" sensor is the world's first to combine an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone and custom processor running proprietary software all in one device. Unlike 2-D cameras and controllers, "Project Natal" tracks your full body movement in 3-D, while responding to commands, directions and even a shift of emotion in your voice.
In addition, unlike other devices, the "Project Natal" sensor is not light-dependent. It can recognize you just by looking at your face, and it doesn't just react to key words but understands what you're saying. Call a play in a football game, and players will actually respond. - pathy, on 06/02/2009, -2/+15It already does. There's demos of it on the E3 floor, and all the stuff they showed on stage is real. They even have Burnout tweaked to work with it.
- ShadowMarth, on 06/02/2009, -0/+13Perhaps, but Sony kind of screwed themselves over. And while they SAY that they don't mind the Wii, they're also full of *****.
- IFEice, on 06/02/2009, -1/+14
- jrm125, on 06/02/2009, -8/+20It'll be a novelty. These kinds of things always are.
- DivisibleByZero, on 06/02/2009, -6/+18Mmmm, pipe dream.
- glockman69, on 06/02/2009, -0/+11There is wayyyy to much sun out there!
- lordmike, on 06/02/2009, -1/+12Yeah, people keep saying that... but, it's not like you can quarterback the New England Patriots in your backyard...
- IFEice, on 06/02/2009, -2/+13Yep, especially when what's on the screen lags behind the actors.
- djpray2k, on 06/02/2009, -2/+13When?
- zip000, on 06/02/2009, -1/+12If it does all that and does it well, it'll cost a fortune.
- Cyclonic, on 06/02/2009, -4/+15If you were an ancient barbarian, I bet a real embarrassing thing would be if you were sacking Rome and your cape got caught on something and you couldn't get it unhooked, and you had to ask another barbarian to unhook it for you.
- Vannos, on 06/02/2009, -2/+11But everything can change when you throw piles of money at it.
- dfross, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10Problem for something like Project Natal is, that ALL games can rely on the Wii having the motion controller, so the games support it. For XBox 360, the proportion of users with these additional controllers will be small, hence less incentive for companies to invest money in making the games or improving the experience.
Compare something like 20 million Wii consoles, versus 20% of 15 million Xbox360 consoles, or about 3 million. yes, I'm pulling figures out of my ass but they are indicative - you won't get good games until you have an established user base, and you won't get a user base until you have good games. You have to go all-out and take a big risk as Nintendo did with the Wii. Doing an optional extra approach has always failed in the past. - smackydoodle, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10Reminds me of it too... especially after I saw the pic three comments up...
- removesstains, on 06/02/2009, -0/+9LOL i was thinking the same thing. That family was way to perfect and i wanted to punch them all in the face.
- mohabitar, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10Were in 2009. I think we can begin to expect things like this. I've learned not to underestimate technology..
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/02/2009, -1/+9Dugg for the incredibly appropriate Hitchhiker's reference. Douglas Adams was a prophet.
- frygar, on 06/02/2009, -1/+9Natal looks great, but to think it's not an attempt to sway Wii customers would be disingenuous at best.
- DivisibleByZero, on 06/02/2009, -3/+11Never. See how awesome it is when your dog walks in front of you and confuses the thing. Or when the voice recognition can't figure out your accent.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -2/+10I still think that the iPhone is just another touch screen...
- iFrix, on 06/02/2009, -2/+10Wow those movements sure got captured accurately... NOT
- iFrix, on 06/02/2009, -1/+8Games, my dear Watson, it's all about the games....
Look, nobody cares for a "dodgeball simulator". This technology will either take off or fall down depending on the games that support it. If they're just partygames (which is most likely) then it will fall down. But if some GOOD games actively use these controls without screwing up than it will have a fighting chance. - DivisibleByZero, on 06/02/2009, -1/+8By the time they're done, each player will have to wear special shirts or something.
- kefkaantakrist, on 06/02/2009, -0/+7They only care about the Wii if and when one of those Wii sales *could have been* a 360 sale. The way they would have had to market the 360 to get many of those sales would have alienated too many of their core audience - the ones who actually BUY GAMES.
There doesn't have to be a "winner" and a "loser". If everyone is making money, everybody wins. - ProfessorSYM, on 06/02/2009, -1/+8There are two kinds of people in the world: those who find reasons why something can't work and those who figure out how to make it work.
Generally speaking, the latter are more successful than the former. - imagreenslushie, on 06/02/2009, -3/+10Sega Genesis had this a while ago....

:-) - r0g3r, on 06/02/2009, -3/+10For racing games I would not like this at all, actually having a steering controller is the way to go. Gives your hands something to rest on and the tactile feedback is a must for any kind of realistic driving. You'd get tired of holding your arms in the air in front of you real quick I think. Same applies to Wii racing games.
