- jedi0utkast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Finally full support for Visual Studio, and Live.. Now MS.. please allow for independent developer to publish on the marketplace.
- BBX25, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20You sure care enough to comment.
- fatejudger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Ever heard of a warranty?
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Independnat Developers can publish on XBLM. You simply need to meet standards of the platform; we dont need piles of shovelware for sale on XBLM.
Anyone can start writing, and bring it up to MS. If you meet the quality standards, they'll let you publish. - ha1f, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Now I'm pissed that I just bought a PS3...
- byronm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12holy CRAP this is fantastic news! may make games for windows live actually mean something.
- AzraelKans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Actually the part I loved the most was the announcement of SoftImage XSI ModTool the tool is FREE for xna usage!
- HolyChimp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I'd be pissed if I had to pay for a bunch of business end features that I didn't need in my OS, or if I had to pay for Media Centre on all of my companies office machines.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Why is cross platform so key in this? What this really means (IMHO) is that independant XNA devs are going to be able to network xbox 360 games.
What this means, is someone is going to port the Rosetta@Home to XNA
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/rosettahome-distributed-folding-coming-to-xbox-360-248072.php - estvir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yes.
- SpaceNinjaDino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Since earlier versions did not have Live support, I didn't consider wasting time on XBLA development. Now this is great news, and I'll definitely want to get involved.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5now it's worth using.
- posure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's not what he means..He's saying he *already* had Visual Studio 2005 (the commercial version, which is much better) and had to install C# Express just to use XNA. Originally, the commercial version of Visual Studio was unsupported since Microsoft assumed that people with VS would probably be buying dev kits (and likely not developing in C#).
- OpCzar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think you can only use c# with XNA whereas the big companies use c++ based engines.
- Mearn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think he meant that he already had VS 2005 installed but then had to install C# express as well to use XNA. I was annoyed by that as well.
- briguymaine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3so when will we start to be able to play with people's creations?
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3MS has dropped hints about bringing an "XNA Channel" or somesuch to Xbox 360. They've said "we've not announced how were going to bring this to LIVE yet."
This kind of non-denial denials. I imagine they could simply release them as XBLA titles -- nothing stops them today. While not mentioned here, I envisioned that the winner of this Contest might end up coming to XBLA... we'll see. - greensky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm sure you have to be in the creators club to play XNA games on the 360 for version 1. I don't know if that changed in 2.0 or not.
- consonance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That was an extremely badly misplaced joke.
- drewjoh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2nobody cares that you don't care? (doh! I replied... does that mean I care?)
- greensky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The XNA framework lets you build Xbox or PC games. To play the games on your Xbox you have to join the creators club ($99/year). You can download and run/play PC games without joining the club (for free).
Some good sites for tutorials/games are: ziggyware.com and xnadevelopment.com. - JonRick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No, but I've read on digg that there WILL be custom maps for UT3 on the 360.
- Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1$99/year is about $8.25 a month. All you really need to do is to not buy that bag of chips, that barrel of ice cream, and that chocolate bar every month and you'd be able to afford the XNA membership. It's very reasonable, especially for indie game developers.
- xino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And what difference does that make as far as the quality of games you can put out? For instance, could you ever compete with Gears of War, Halo 3, Oblivion, etc with XNA Game Studio Express 2.0?
- Weebs43, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1XNA was originally intended for indie developers, and I'm not sure about you, but I certainly don't have just $100 to just toss around. Also remember, you need that subscription to run other peoples games on your 360.
- xino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Are you sure about that you have to be in the creators club to play Xbox 360 games? I thought that was only true of XNA Game Studio Express, but not in professional. I also think 2.0 won't require that membership to run/play X360 games.
- OpCzar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm confused, does this mean anything for custom maps for UT3?
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, I'm sure that's changing over time, maybe even with this version. Fact is that XNA is still really early in it's development but is comming along really nicely.
- miketrash, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Why mod him down? That is a valid question..You can dev games on your windows box and test them there w/o the fee but you have to pay a hefty fee to use the content on your 360.
- xino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know any of the differences between XNA Game Studio Express 2.0 and what the big companies like Bungie, Ubisoft, etc use to make Xbox 360 games?
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1hefty fee? Where are you getting that from?
Q: How much does XNA Game Studio Express cost? Is there a difference between Windows and Xbox 360 development?
A: Visual C# Express, the XNA Game Studio Express tools and runtime environment for Windows are all FREE. To develop, debug and/or play games on the Xbox 360, however, you must have an XNA Creators Club subscription purchased directly from the Xbox Live Marketplace. Two subscription options are available: $99 per year or $49 per four months.
I would hardly call $99/year a hefty fee. - litheon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There's a lot more to it than that. There has yet to be an XNA game made available on the Xbox Live Marketplac, and although there are a few in the works (including the two from the Dream Build Play contest) it's not as easy as making a game and emailing somebody at Microsoft to get it on the Marketplace.
- WallinSage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Of the best rulers, The people only know that they exist; the next best they love and praise the next they fear; and the next they revile. When they do not command the people's faith, some will lose faith in them, and then they resort to oaths! But of the best when their task is accomplished, their work done, the people all remark, ''We have done it ourselves.''

See Q: How can I share my Xbox 360 game built with XNA Game Studio Express with other Xbox 360 users?
I think this might kill the deal for any really good apps
>The game project, including all source and content assets, must be shared with the receiving user. The receiving user then compiles and deploys the >game to their Xbox 360.
Offical cost:

- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Why?
- Bossman1086, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I second that. About time they gave support for Visual Studio. I was pissed that I needed to have VS2005 and C#Express both installed on my system to use XNA.

Havok which is one of the biggest names in game engines now support's Visual Studio - annenk38, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0That would be nice. They'd never allow it though for the fear of repeating the great game crash of 1983.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_crash_of_1983 - Dexk, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3That is great news, but will it be free?
- weedmonk, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0They obviously copied Apple upcoming killer video game development. M$ always steals!
- consonance, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Dear Lord, ONE VERSION! Microsoft has decided to forgo different consumer and professional editions! Perhaps this means the next version of Windows will comprise only one version. *keeps fingers crossed*
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -22/+3My 360 Red Ringed, so I really don't care much for any 360 news anymore.
