- AmyVernon, on 02/02/2009, -3/+38Sigh. Just because you boys can't make sandwiches while ironing business shirts underwater ...
- FriedTurkey, on 02/02/2009, -11/+44Well most of Xbox's line up consists of shooting ***** up. Maybe they should just change the targets to stuff women hate like "Public Breastfeeding Objectors", "Hypocritical Woman Power vs. Paying for Dinner", "Dude Who Expects You To Be OK With That Just Because You Kept Talking About How Kinky You Were", "Guy Who is Just Trying to Be Friendly But is Ugly So It is Embarrassing To Be Talk To", "Guys Who Ask You Out Without Orange Skin and Lots of Hair Product" and "Asian Men".
- Snoosy, on 02/02/2009, -4/+30My girlfriend just bought a 360 just to play Rock Band 2. Since then I've gotten her addicted to GTA4 and Halo 3 as well. Girls do play "guy" games, it just takes a little encouraging to get them to start.
- mrand2008, on 02/03/2009, -3/+22Ok. So I'm a girl. A STRAIGHT college girl. With a boyfriend.
I found this whole thing really offensive. My favorite game in the whole ***** world is Half-Life 2. Bioshock is a close second. I also play the Silent Hill games, and anything with zombies in it. All on an Xbox 360 (I have an Xbox, too, but my HL2 copy for it melted so my boyfriend fixed a 360 for me and gave me his spare copy of the Orange Box).
In my opinion, the right kind of girls already have an Xbox. - WafflePirate, on 02/02/2009, -4/+19Extreme Nagging.

- bitterbug, on 02/03/2009, -0/+13"Not tonight honey, I'm working on my gamerscore."
Who's lucky now? - Cerialthriller, on 02/02/2009, -7/+19why does everyone still think the xbox is all shooters? I own like 30 games and 2 of them are shooters..
- crackwassist, on 02/02/2009, -3/+14it's not a rule, but in general, girls like different things. Yes there are girls who like football, but not many. Interests are different from an early age. Thinking it's sexist is a little wierd because you aren't clammering for a cooking game or a fashion game, because you're not into that, because you're not a girl (or gay).
Look, being a little facetious but really I don't think it's sexist to recognize that women and men have (generally) different interests in SOME areas. - petebot, on 02/02/2009, -2/+13My girlfriend loves Star wars and played D&D when she was younger, so KOTOR was a perfect video game for her. She also loved Diablo (this was before we dated). However, she has almost no interest in shooters. She played through Bioshock after picking up on all of the objectivist business that was in there when she watched me play through (she just happened to be reading Ayn Rand books at the time). She also liked the atmosphere of the game. She still raves about the game.
However, she’s just not interested in Half Life 2 or Halo 3 at all. She even got bored with Portal. I’d chalk it up to the first person aspects of those games, but she also loves Fallout 3 and Oblivion. She likes that you can explore on your own.w
I guess my point is that its hard to predict what games she’ll dig, and “designing for women” is an experiment in futility. What my gf likes is not what AmyVernon will like, and is not what Jane Doe casual gamer will like. - wefarrell, on 02/02/2009, -3/+13Sounds like your looking for women in the wrong places.
- nellshini, on 02/03/2009, -1/+10My girlfriend loves the 360 and if she spent more time at her own place she'd buy one herself. But she isn't as eager to play on Live as she is local multiplayer. Something about being a novice where everyone else is skilled and/or expecting skilled players turns her off of the idea. I found this out when she'd play L4D one day, but not want to play when it was a Versus Match over Live.
If other women feel similarly, and the Xbox thrives off online multiplayer, it would explain some of the hesitation in the female demographic. - WafflePirate, on 02/02/2009, -5/+14Extreme business shirt ironing.
- cashmoneybuddy, on 02/03/2009, -3/+11I think Xbox live is a great confidence booster for women. Girls get a lot of attention when they enter the realm of geeks.
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -3/+10You lost me at "my boyfriend".
- bakaferret, on 02/03/2009, -3/+10Am I really the only woman out there that loves video games? Games that I love to play: Fallout 3, Fable 2, Halo, World of Warcraft (I know, not an Xbox game but just sayin'...), Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Soul Calibur, Zelda games, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Portal, just to name a few...of course, I do also love the typical "girly" games like Cooking Mama, but not as much as other games. And no, my boyfriend did not inspire me to play games...been playing since Sega Genesis (parents wouldn't let me have NES :(). ...then again, I admit I mostly play FPS games for the storyline, basically why I love Fallout and Halo while not so much COD4. So, meh.
I know I'm probably the exception. But I'm slightly offended at the idea of "games for women", although from a marketing standpoint I see why they're taking that route...after all it is unexplored territory. *sigh* I guess I can't complain much since I had the same issues with other girls growing up...no one wanted to play Super Smash Bros. with me, so I ended up hanging out with guys mostly anyway. *shrug* - Cerialthriller, on 02/02/2009, -5/+12Kitchen Cleaner Arcade
- Cerialthriller, on 02/02/2009, -1/+8the shooters i have are Gears of War 1 and CoD4. The rest are non shooters, a majority of which are RPGs
- Licurgo, on 02/03/2009, -0/+7you are a lucky bastard
- MonkeyNacho, on 02/03/2009, -0/+7Female, 31, and I get tons of backhanded comments about my love for the Xbox. None of the women I work with play, or care to, though most of the guys do.
One broad actually told me, "my husband doesn't think a grown woman should be playing video games."
I should tell her her husband sounds like a dick. - FriedTurkey, on 02/03/2009, -1/+7I think the attention they get on Xbox Live is not the good kind. My guess is women don't like screechy 13 year old kids telling them want to give it to them.
- mcwattersm, on 02/03/2009, -1/+7I am sure the ever charming community of 12 year olds on Xbox live will really encourage girls to get an Xbox.
- rsbryswrrl, on 02/03/2009, -1/+6Chicks dig games - usually the same games guys do. I'm addicted to the Tomb Raider franchise. And my husband and I have this weird form of partnership when he's playing games like Resident Evil, GTA, etc. He gets into the gameplay and I do the strategy/directions part - kinda like when we're in the car, he usually does the driving and I do the directions. Me and my sister and some other friends have Halo nights. Just please, for the love of God, do not try to make ridiculous games like shopping for ***** shoes or something. I have no desire to virtually shop for virtual shoes. If I shop for shoes, they better end up in my actual closet.
- AmyVernon, on 02/02/2009, -5/+10zing!
- perryjoyce, on 02/03/2009, -1/+6No, you're not. And the only thing more obnoxious than guys who assume girls don't play games are girls who assume they are the only one, that they alone are the exception.
I know lots of girls who play games. They fact that they are not out here patrolling forums looking for attention does not mean they do not exist. They'd rather just play, gender be damned. - bitterbug, on 02/03/2009, -1/+6They probably don't like virtually *everyone* telling them they want to give it to them. Have you been on Live or PSN and heard these tools? It doesn't matter what age group, there's tons of them that think they have an obligation to be obnoxious stalker types with nothing better to do than make propositions to anyone they even *think* is female.
Make a tag like HaloKatey16 and see how many seconds it takes to get unwanted attention without ever having to speak into the mic. - peteyb1313, on 02/03/2009, -1/+6wow i just realized woman in gaming is like woman in the 50s. Men dominate the gaming world, much like they did the business world in the 50s, and woman trying to enter Xbox live get ridiculed and not treated equally. When will the womans rights in gaming movement happen?
/high and on digg - inactive, on 02/03/2009, -1/+6My girlfriend wasn't interested in video games at all until she watched me play through Bioshock and then decided she wanted to give it a go. She wasn't very good at first but she loved the game so much that she eventually figured it out, with a little guidance from me. Now she's tearing through Left 4 Dead and Fable 2. I bought her an Xbox 360 with a Gold account and she plays it every day now. It wasn't a "girl" game that got her interested, just a great game.
IMHO they would do well to make more co-op games that couples can play together. - TechnoRabbit, on 02/03/2009, -2/+6I'm a woman and I love shooting things in games. My favorite games at this moment: Fallout 3, Halo 3, Call of Duty: World at War.
- nerdherder, on 02/03/2009, -3/+7You are a minority.
- jessenoob, on 02/03/2009, -1/+5Who the hell does she think she is hating Portal like that?
- joeleslie, on 02/03/2009, -0/+4She's a keeper.
- crackwassist, on 02/02/2009, -4/+7The big hurdle for me (or my wife actually) is her getting used to controlling movement in a 3D environment. She got frustrated playing fallout 3 because the controls were so awkward for her (she gave up before getting to the vats stuff so yes that would have helped but after staring at walls and running past characters she got pissed) Obviously there is a learning curve but when it's a 'kill things' based game the desire to fight through to control competence isn't there. On the other hand you have rock band which is hitting buttons so that's not a help. I do think they need accessible, 3D games for girls.
btw- Any suggestions would be great. I've been playing so long that I can hardly help her because it's all so instinctive for me at this point (haven't play resident evil yet so maybe that will change). - jshhmr, on 02/03/2009, -0/+3My 12 year old neice plays COD 4 and 5 and she kicks butt!
- Dauntless1, on 02/03/2009, -2/+5Hey! Don't talk ***** about Apple! I LIKE spending twice the money for half the quality, just so I can can a brand logo tell me who I am!
- schleufer, on 02/03/2009, -0/+3I asked my girlfriend what she wanted MOST for Christmas, and she said "An XBox 360" . So I bought her one. At first she was excited about the free stuff and demos. Then she finally got around to buying games. The first two games for her new system were Guitar Hero World Tour and Left 4 Dead. She loves blasting the crap out of zombies.
Yep, that's MY girlfriend. - inactive, on 02/03/2009, -3/+6that's easy: HELLO KITTY themed xbox.
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -0/+3I've never had a problem getting girls to play video games, even FPSs, either. It's all about the attitude and encouragement. If you're willing to be patient and actually teach them, instead of mercilessly beat the crap out of them, you might actually get somewhere. Especially in the girlfriend situation, when there's she knows it's a mildly safe environment to learn.
But I'm just not patient enough to actually do that anymore. - ipushmycar, on 02/03/2009, -0/+3God forbid Microsoft and it's game companies actually making games that people want to play...
Shooters are the big thing right now. They're addicting, and require reflex and strategy. Reflex + strategy = basis of FPS competitive gaming, and competitive gaming (to many) is a lot more fun and long-lasting then a RPG or racing game (of course, not to all). - pikelet, on 02/03/2009, -1/+4Co-op is excellent - if it's your first time playing a game, you don't feel so discouraged as generally the more experienced person will compensate for you until you get the hang of it. Most non-gamers, not specifically female ones, just get frustrated and give up. Play co-op, and they'll stick around long enough to want to continue on their own.
- rsbryswrrl, on 02/03/2009, -0/+3If they make a Hello Kitty FPS I will totally buy it though.
- FyreGoddess, on 02/02/2009, -2/+5Nah. Moving from a PS2 to the Xbox360. After that, we'll pick up something else. Even once we get the Xbox360, I don't see either of us stopping using the PS2 anymore than the PS2 stopped me from playing games on my PC.
It's just that Xbox360 exclusive is more appealing to us right now than PS3 exclusive... It's all about the games...
I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready for the NEXT generation console, exclusive games will be a thing of the past. (eh, it's a pipe dream, I know) - mcwattersm, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3Okay, 16 year olds with really high pitched voices.
- bambooanime, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3LEGO Star Wars. It's silly and can be a co-op game.
- detroitplaya, on 02/03/2009, -0/+2my Gf will only play burnout with me
- glowingfaintly, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3I believe it's already happened- if you look on the main Xbox Live page, there's usually something going on with GamerchiX, who are a large group of women who pick titles, and game.
As for not getting "ridiculed" on Live for being a woman- I just don't turn my mic on. I don't want the attention either way. - BabyWookie, on 02/03/2009, -2/+4If my girlfriend picks up gaming, then who's going to get me beers, make sandwiches and give me blowjobs while I play?
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -0/+2It's happening, albeit slowly. I play Halo 3 online with a massive group of guys and they were shocked at first to be playing with a girl, now I'm just one of them. It's awesome!
- baldbean, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3My gf likes video games, but hardly ever plays them. She likes the Wii because of the easy controls. For example her and I play House of the Dead for hours and she's the one doing most of the damage (coming over to my side of the screen and *****) and have bowling battles as well. If the Xbox controls weren't so "intimidating" I think she'd play a lot more.
