Microsoft has "no plans" for Xbox 360 Blu-ray Drive
gamepro.com — As we have stated, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360," said a Microsoft official in an email to GamePro on Monday. "Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."

- dougvfr750, on 05/06/2008, -20/+59Wimps..... I am sure it would sell like hotcakes....
- skatastrophy, on 05/06/2008, -5/+54I would buy one... and I would like one of those hotcakes too while we're at it.
- OwdenBowden, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2Ummm Hot Cakes... Ummm
- ronnsprocket, on 05/06/2008, -18/+23would not buy. ONLY because it would probably be too loud. plus, sony is updating the PS3 like crazy. I feel comfortable buying a PS3 for just bluray and MGS4.
....correct me if im wrong about PS3 being loads quieter- geartype2, on 05/06/2008, -3/+12It's in between my tv and desk lcd and although it does produce noise, it is less than my computer fans at 50%.
- thecheatah, on 05/06/2008, -2/+8I think your computer needs to be cleaned for dust. Thats not normal.
- geartype2, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1hoo-ray thermaltake. Great cheap fans, but they are rather loud after a year or two.
- thecheatah, on 05/06/2008, -2/+8I think your computer needs to be cleaned for dust. Thats not normal.
- crowbar77, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I think depends when you bought it, the recent ones seem to be fairly quiet. I got mine a few months after launch and its WAY louder than my pc, i still used the HD DVD drive though with no problems. I guess it would depend on the size of the room as well.
- salmonmoose, on 05/06/2008, -3/+27If your console is too loud, your home theater is too soft - turn it up! :)
- OwdenBowden, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4M$, being smart about the entire HD war, didn't really care who was the winner because they know that the real winner is Streaming HD, along with Downloadable HD. And with the Xbox live service being the benchmark (as well as it now undergoing an enhancement) it is already for the Streaming Wars.
The Force is strong with them.- potofgravy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Only in places with strong internet.
There's no way I'll believe that the market for downloadable and streaming HD is anywhere near the market for dvd purchases at the moment and I don't believe it will be for years to come.
In Australia our internet is incredibly slow when compared to many other countries, including America, and I doubt many people will be interested in sitting around waiting while their xbox chews up their bandwidth. They'd much rather have a blue case they can hold and insert a disc that plays straight away. - NYC10004, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0In NYC the internet is damn fast with a cable modem and now with the FiOS service coming its only going to get faster. For example, The 360's HD downloads are awesome, you begin to watch them in 1.5 min after purchase. In addition, many people no longer want physical media that takes up space.
I don't doubt what you said about Australia's speeds, but for those of us with fast connections...
Blu-ray vs DVD =Better,
Blu-ray vs. HD downloads = BS.
- potofgravy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Only in places with strong internet.
- anononon, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Your not wrong, but xbox 360 doesn't require games to be installed to the hdd either.
- geartype2, on 05/06/2008, -3/+12It's in between my tv and desk lcd and although it does produce noise, it is less than my computer fans at 50%.
- devophl, on 05/06/2008, -7/+20The issue is that Microsoft doesn't want to be tied to Sony for their Blu-ray player. This is big EGO against big EGO. They're looking elsewhere to see if they can get Blu-ray technology without Sony being attached to it. I suspect we'll see a Blu-ray add-on before the end of the year!
- nobody98, on 05/06/2008, -2/+14There is no ego in business. No one cares who their tied to as long as they can make a profit out of it.
- Myztry, on 05/06/2008, -8/+2You are confusing the lack of morales, with lack of ego. These guys would easily sell their mother into prostitution for a profit, but if they thought it would make them look like the smaller man, they'd do her first...
They'd do anything for a dollar AND ego. CEO's are a special breed...
- Myztry, on 05/06/2008, -8/+2You are confusing the lack of morales, with lack of ego. These guys would easily sell their mother into prostitution for a profit, but if they thought it would make them look like the smaller man, they'd do her first...
- Myztry, on 05/06/2008, -5/+1.
- AmericansRevolt, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4i think it has more to do with microsoft focusing on their online marketplace then more addons. the hddvd addon flopped of course, and most all addons do anyway. at least by going the online route they know they can supply the same thing to everyone rather then hoping most will buy the upgrade.
- nobody98, on 05/06/2008, -2/+14There is no ego in business. No one cares who their tied to as long as they can make a profit out of it.
- dsmx, on 05/06/2008, -4/+15The other problem is that by releasing a blu-ray drive it benefits the ps3 as we know microsoft will charge upwards of $150 for it which puts it very close to the ps3 price.
- brianara3, on 05/06/2008, -5/+2Am I missing something or what? The 360 base (no HDMI?) is $349 an the PS3 base (w/HDMI and blu-ray) is $399... If you want a 360 with HDMI you get the elite and it is $449. Why does everybody keep claiming the 360 is so much cheaper?
- gwolf, on 05/06/2008, -3/+8You are missing something, New 360's have HDMI. With 360 movies are an afterthought with the PS3 gaming seems to be the afterthought.
- dmallymally, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3please, enlighten me. What games does the 360 have that are so great that you wouldn't want to buy a PS3? If you think halo 3 is one of them that is a joke.
- ericrous, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1I can name several great games off the top of my heard that are only available on the 360, several great games that are available for both systems, and NONE that are only available on the PS3.
And that's not a flame, it's a lament (as I own a PS3 myself, which gets used pretty much exclusively for blu-rays these days).- dmallymally, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Ever play drake's fortune? that's a pretty good one, MGS is going to be great. but i didn't actually see you list any of these games that are so great for the 360. What are they?
- brianara3, on 05/06/2008, -5/+2Am I missing something or what? The 360 base (no HDMI?) is $349 an the PS3 base (w/HDMI and blu-ray) is $399... If you want a 360 with HDMI you get the elite and it is $449. Why does everybody keep claiming the 360 is so much cheaper?
- bs0l, on 05/06/2008, -12/+6Microsoft has "no plans" for a great system.
It's already pretty sweet, but it needs hi-def dvd support. And Blu-Ray is all that's left, so they have to accept it and be smart.- doctordbx, on 05/06/2008, -4/+11Why does it need hi-def DVD support? It already supports HDTV for games, and it is a games console.
BluRay isn't exactly a must have feature, especially with there not being many films made lately I would want to own on disc.- brianara3, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1Give it another year.... Hi-def movies will start becoming more standard. Besides... why not have hi-def? Sony does it and that has made the PS3 the most popular blu-ray player (I know 3 people that never play games on it, just watch movies).
- gwolf, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5I just don't see BR taking off until the prices are more like DVD, which by the way looks pretty damn good.
- doctordbx, on 05/06/2008, -4/+11Why does it need hi-def DVD support? It already supports HDTV for games, and it is a games console.
- JOJOFACE, on 05/06/2008, -6/+3I have not seen the word "Wimp" in like, ten years.
- eleven, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I'll leave the so-loud-I-cant-hear-myself-salivate 360 but take some of those mouthwatering hotcakes.
- Spuy767, on 05/06/2008, -1/+6Meh, Microsoft understands what their system really needs. More cowbell.
- ericrous, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3You can never have too much cowbell.
- Hummer88, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2The added feature of a BlueRay drive would be nice, but I can't see them adding this to the current verson of the console. The box is already 3 years old and unless you own an elite, it wouldn't support 1080p anyhow...
- OaklandNative, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Netflix is coming to 360 and ps3 anyway. When that happens, why does anyone in the US need a BR player (assuming they have most of their movies available in HD, which i'm pretty sure will be the case)?
- OaklandNative, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1*anyone in the US who owns a 360 i mean
- jerrycan, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3I disagree. It will sell more like gangbusters
- skatastrophy, on 05/06/2008, -5/+54I would buy one... and I would like one of those hotcakes too while we're at it.
- valejo, on 05/06/2008, -14/+3Weird, the rumor keeps going back and forth, but I suppose this statement settles it...thanks.
- loganhid, on 05/06/2008, -20/+18I'm not sure they can go their way on this. People are not ready or unable to store games on their HDD's. Broadband is still not fast for us in the west. And Game designers aren't going to carry on fitting the games onto DVD or placing them on several disks, when they have Blu-Ray to work with.
- crowbar77, on 05/06/2008, -10/+21Yeah just look at how unsuccessful steam is.
/sarcasm- Ajajadude, on 05/06/2008, -1/+13People who want to use consoles for gaming are not that interested in downloading and installing every game they can get there hands on. Especially since consoles like the 360 charge an arm and a leg to upgrade the HDD.
- Cimlite, on 05/06/2008, -4/+9As long as the Xbox has a much bigger marketshare than that of the PS3 that's exactly what they will do. More potential buyers for your game = more money.
It was the same back when it was reversed. Most Xbox games looked much worse than what the console was capable of... just because the PS2 was the console development of the games focused on.
Besides... If you look at games currently, most don't even fill up a DVD. Grand Theft Auto IV, a fairly big game (in terms of disc size that is) is 7,3 gigs for example.- theaceoffire, on 05/06/2008, -2/+5Remind me, how much is the 360's hard drives?
That seems to be the biggest issues.
And Rockstar has already told MS "Its not like GTA is getting smaller."
Imagine what they could have done if they were allowed to have 25GB, or 50GB.- Flynnz, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3from what I understand....the only thing they had to really cut back on is the insane amount of audio (at really high quality). Not saying the game wouldnt be better with more audio, but I dont think its something that would really matter all that much to most people.
And while its true games like GTA cant really go on more than one disc, most other games can. And so far I only know of 2 games that span across discs on the 360. (and those games are using crazy amounts of FMV, which is by far the biggest killer of space). So if it really was a big deal I think you would see a heck of a lot more games spanning discs (just like they did on PS1)
- Flynnz, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3from what I understand....the only thing they had to really cut back on is the insane amount of audio (at really high quality). Not saying the game wouldnt be better with more audio, but I dont think its something that would really matter all that much to most people.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/06/2008, -7/+2You can't honestly suggest we download everything. I know many tech nerds get a hard on over streaming and downloading but right now it's a pipe dream. Stop kidding yourselves.
- senatorpjt, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4I think it would be fine if one movie rental off XBL didn't cost as much as a month of Netflix.
- ryansmith18, on 05/06/2008, -4/+1Why is downloading everything so unreasonable? I don't know about you, but if I had an opportunity to stay even fatter than I already am by downloading my games to my console rather than going to a store and buying them, I would instantly fork over my money for said console. Laziness ftw.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1The fact that I'm getting dugg down only proves my point.
- JigoroKano, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1I'm pretty sure that GTAIV disc is full. With the error control, drm, file formatting, ... you don't get to use all the bits on the DVD.
- theaceoffire, on 05/06/2008, -2/+5Remind me, how much is the 360's hard drives?
- crowbar77, on 05/06/2008, -10/+21Yeah just look at how unsuccessful steam is.
- CollapseControl, on 05/06/2008, -29/+19HD movies are nice but not needed to enjoy a good movie. It is the story that makes you enjoy a flick, not how well you can see the color of someone's eyes.
As for having B-R on the 360, it surely isn't needed. It is clear as day that Microsoft is working on their next version of Xbox and they will definitly have advanced specs in it.
I'm more excited about the evolution of LIVE over any High Def add-ons or abilities.- krische, on 05/06/2008, -3/+9I would have to agree with you. It's kind of late in the game for them to add it to the 360. It's already half way through its lifetime. Adding it on now wouldn't have much of an effect.
- uncouthyouth, on 05/06/2008, -8/+4I gotta disagree, the lack of Blu-Ray on 360 is what's keeping me from getting one. When I heard M$ was finally going to wise up and upgrade the 360 to the obvious (albeit unfortunate) next generation of physical media, I decided it was time to get my own console and stop going over to use my friends' all the time. Now I'm going back to my fence-sitting. I'm sure I can't be the only one in this situation.
- krische, on 05/06/2008, -2/+13I hear the PS3 has blu-ray.
- doctordbx, on 05/06/2008, -2/+8I stopped reading when I go to M$.
- dpcamp, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2i went straight towards the "reply to uncouthyouth" to say the same..
- VVCephei, on 05/06/2008, -3/+5you're a Next-Gen Retard. Seriously, Lack of Blu-Ray stops you from getting an xbox 360? You base your decision for gaming platforms... on it's disk platform?
Secondly, Even if Microsoft (none of that old M$ *****.) Do choose to bring out a Blu-Ray for the Xbox 360, it will be entirely for movies and blu ray DVD's and not for games, Why? Because not everybody will have a Blu-Ray addon for the 360 so game developers wouldnt spend the time and money porting it to the Xbox because not everybody (who has a 360) would be able to get the game that and the issue with backwards compatibility.- Ajajadude, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4Which is why it's semi-puzzling Microsoft didn't bother with an internal HD drive. One one hand, it makes sense that they didn't want to get that involved in the HD format war and risk being stuck with a format that lost. On the other hand, no matter what people say, being stuck with the DVD9 format will limit what can be done with the 360 in the future, especially since Microsoft also decided against having the HDD as standard when the 360 first rolled out.
- VVCephei, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Which is exactly why Playstation 3 will inevitably win the console war (not that there is one, but since that's what everybody is calling it, I will too, to avoid confusion)... because at the moment game developers struggle with getting used to Blu-Ray and the way it works, plus it is a lot of stress aswell, however in about a year (roughly) game developers would probably have grown very fluent with it and thus have more exclusives on the Blu Ray platform (for the slow ones, Ps3 will eventually get everything xbox 360 does. Wheras there is little to no hope for the future of 360 (Reason being, everything microsoft has ever added to the 360 is for a rediclous amount, you have to admit that the HD DVD drive was absolutely rediculous, aswell as the wireless adapter, I mean come on, ps3 was built in with a ***** HD format and wireless adapter.)
but to the point, the 360 will only succeed if it has more potential for future generation gaming, at the moment there is no promise, unless there are addons announced for the future, however that would all depend on whether all 360 holders would be willing to spend a rediculous amount of money on an addon for the 360 where they :could: just get a ps3 and be ensured that all future generations (which support the ps3 platform) will all be compatible.

- uncouthyouth, on 05/06/2008, -5/+1I have a PC, I haven''t needed a gaming platform. It's a luxury that I haven't felt compelled as a poor college student to get up until now, and unless Xbox gets Blu-Ray I'll be getting a PS3 now that I'm graduating and making money. Missed opportunity for Redmond, because I'm biased against Sony ever since their CD installed a rootkit on my computer 3 years ago.

- sup4141, on 05/06/2008, -4/+2I had a ps3 and took it back after I realized the graphics were about the same and that I don't buy movies. Ps3 was a big disappointment for me.

- insinuate, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8I strongly disagree with you dude. When you have a 40" TV built for 1080p...it is horribly distracting to watch a 640x480 movie.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4Don't bother explaining. These are the kinds of idiots who still think an up-converted DVD is as good as true HD. It's "good enough" for them, so it must be "good enough" for everyone.
- senatorpjt, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I have a 61" TV, and even 720p looks like *****. Well, not ***** exactly, but it's an obvious difference going to 1080p.
- Spuy767, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3Well I have a 1 million inch TV! Seriously. No one cares how big your TV is. It would have sufficed to say, not to mention making you look less like a tool, "there is an obvious difference going from 720p to 1080i.
- nominalgeek, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1The point is, that HD resolution video is needed on any large display. Once you scale or stretch beyond it's intended size you start to see compression artifacts.
- Spuy767, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Picture quality has more to with compression rates than Resolution. Comcast recently inserted a gargantuan ***** into the collective mouth of its HD customers by Upping the number of HD channels by something like 20% without increasing the bandwidth of their infrastructure, meaning that they simply increased the compression rate. And if you compare HD over Digital Satellite to HD over cable, and let alone HD movies on Disc, there are VERY noticible artifacts.

- tamuengineer, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I must disagree, try watching a SD movie on anything larger than a 40" TV and you will notice a huge difference. Not to mention support for 7.1 channel uncompressed audio (which again if you do not have a good home theater you wouldn't notice).
- Spuy767, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2The linear PCM audio on Blu-Rays is amazing.
- WVUChrisF, on 05/06/2008, -4/+22I just keep hoping the rumors will be true one day. Oh well I guess I'l wait until next week before the next story comes out about Blu-Ray on the 360.

They are the same ones who said HDMI was not needed this generation... then a few months later we recieved the elite.
I am not to sure the MS is the king of being straight forward when it comes to the 360.- tamuengineer, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2Good example of the lack of innovation and leadership from MS. MS continues to produce products which feature the bare minimum requirements for them to be successful (successful as in produce a profit). If demand becomes strong enough and MS can see a profit from adding Blu-Ray to the 360 I have no doubt they will do so.

- fpaudon, on 05/06/2008, -3/+3They're just mad that HDDVD lost. Sounds like sour grapes to me
- HigherLogic, on 05/06/2008, -0/+7That, or by the time BR takes off and is available in homes just like DVD players are now that they'll already have a new console out.
- fallenone05, on 05/06/2008, -4/+1And when that new console comes out, the PS3 fanboys will be like "welcome to 2007"
- ericrous, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1The next next generation of fanboy flame wars will begin

- arigneysd, on 05/06/2008, -7/+2well microsoft isn't making the blue ray player.. it'll be a different company.. so that could still be true.. microsoft isn't the only one who makes controllers for the xbox either right?
- 007isbond1, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yea but Microsoft had to create the controllers architecture and the communication protocols.
same goes for blu ray. Microsoft will have to release a system update to create a bluray driver before it will become compatible with official or third party blu ray players =D
but i agree. 360 needs blu-ray
- 007isbond1, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yea but Microsoft had to create the controllers architecture and the communication protocols.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -37/+6Nothing could save Xbox from eternal mediocrity. Its popularity speaks volume for the ignorance of those who claim to be gamers.

- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -21/+3I'm not a fanboy...I'm a gamer. I play all system except Xbox.
Xbox is anti-gaming. It is the George W. Bush of Republicans. It claims to be a gaming system but in reality it is destroying gaming by dumbing down games that real gamers care about.- str1fe, on 05/06/2008, -1/+10Elaborate.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -17/+1Did you mean eloquent?
Or are you retarded/have an Xbox? - archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4Someone sounds angry because PSN sucks ass and is no where near as good as Live. Whats that you want to talk to someone who is playing another game. Well thats to bad. Looks like PSN doesnt offer that service. Sounds like PS3 sucks.
(disclaimer: I own a PS3 and 360 and my wife has a wii that I dont want to talk about) - FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -14/+1PC > All...
I've never played a console online...why waste the time when you can do it 10 times better on PC? Because you're lazy/not a real gamer. - str1fe, on 05/06/2008, -0/+15No, I meant elaborate. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/elaborate#Verb
Also, you make yourself look like a complete ***** when you claim you aren't a fanboy then go on about "PC > All" and your name is "*****". - archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4I don't PC game because I'm "broke/college student who gets financially raped by Penn State every 4 months and can't afford some crazy expensive computer". Otherwise I would be playing my PC exclusive Gears of War levels right now. Damn you tuition.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -12/+1What does money have to do with it? If you can afford an Xbox and a year of Xbox live you can afford a gaming PC that out-performs Xbox and Xbox live any day.
Maybe you just don't care about gaming and you're too busy partying?
Do what thou wilt...however...don't call yourself a gamer if your spare change goes to beer before a new videocard. - archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -1/+5My spare change went to book and ***** like that. Maybe you should read a book. I've priced a respectable build and its alot more than 450 dollars. Sure you can make a build for 450 that will play PC games but if your going to do it you might as well do it right. 450 dollars will not do it right my freind.
- str1fe, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I didn't know you had to blow all your money on state-of-the-art gaming technology to be considered a gamer. You might like to quit now before you make yourself look like even more of a dumbass.
- archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4How am I looking like a dumbass? It makes sense to build something that won't be out dated in 3 months. If your going to invest moeny you might as well invest in something you are going to get some milage out of.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -10/+1I'm not saying you have to spend money to be a gamer...
I'm saying anyone with a brain knows you can build a PC that plays Xbox/Xbox 360 games for cheaper than the cost of an Xbox and a year of Xbox live...if you don't it's because you're lazy and you only want immediate gratification. In which case you're not a gamer...gamers will do anything it takes to get their game on...except play anything on Xbox. - EllimistX, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Seriously dude, not everyone prefers to live in their mom's basement ranting about how no one else is a gamer just because they have no life. Go outside, take a breath.... it won't kill you. You might even make a friend or two...
- BJLStorm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3A good gaming system cost me under $1000 (I reused my old PSU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers). An Xbox360 Elite costs almost half of that. However, take into consideration that my computer has a terrabyte of hard drive space. Also take into consideration that my computer can run word, surf the web, and do all the things the computer your using to submit comments on Digg can do. So, I have a system that both acts as a gaming console AND a PC. So, when you spend close to half a grand on your xbox and xbox live, additional controllers, games, AND spend $500 on a PC from Dell, you've spent just as much as I have. So, therefore, gaming/PC Utilities cost the same whether you buy a 360+Dell or a pimped out custom built PC. However, I can do more with my PC than you can with your 360. FREE ONLINE GAMING, BETTER GRAPHICS, GAME MODS, etc. If you put the time and energy into a PC, you get a lot more bang for your buck. And it's a lot of fun. If your an Average Joe that just wants to play GTAIV? Get a 360. It's all about preference.
- archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1So I'm a dumbass because I can't afford to game on PC? I got bills. When you move out of your moms you will have bills to. You won't have a bad ass computer after while. You'll be like me willing you're PC to make it just one more semester.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -7/+2@ archerOFloaf
I have bills too...I'm 23 and I've lived on my own for many years. However, I'm smart with money and I can easily afford a gaming PC with an associate's degree. I pay about $20 a month for electricity, $120 a month on a Honda lease, and $500 on rent...the rest goes to gaming/girlfriend/weed.
I've just got enough experience fixing computers I guess I don't need to go to school for four years? Maybe if you hadn't been wasting time on Xbox you would have learned some real world skills like fixing computers for $30k+ a year? Whatever...keep wasting your money if that's what you want...just don't call yourself a gamer. - archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4Yeah you probably went to community college for like 6 dollars a semester.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -7/+1Yeah I did...and? (It was actually about 60% of the cost of a standard university)
A degree is just a piece of paper. Real-world skills are a totally different story. CCNA for the win.
You can make excuses but when it comes down to it, you know you've been lazy and sold yourself short and you're suffering now because you have an Xbox instead of a gaming PC.
You can stop making excuses and improve your life or you can continue to delude yourself into believing you're a gamer. - EggNogIceCream, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6You could still play duck hunt and be a gamer, you dont have to have a top of the line system to be considered one.
- str1fe, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3I'm convinced that ***** is just a troll at this point, as no one is really that stupid.
Oh, and @archerOFloaf, I was calling ***** a dumbass, not you. - Hoogs, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Honestly, no one is going to take you seriously with a name like "*****". Oh, and I happen to prefer console gaming to PC gaming. I'd rather sit comfortably on a couch with a controller than be hunched over a keyboard and mouse.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1Hoogs if you weren't retarded you'd know that it's extremely easy to hook up your PC to your TV and all Xbox 360 wireless periphals work on PC so you can sit on the couch...just another excuse so you can continue to be a lazy ass.
- Hoogs, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Maybe I just enjoy the whole Xbox community aspect with having a Gamertag, achievements, being able to hook up with my friends with voice chat, etc. Quit thinking that everyone who doesn't prefer PC gaming is retarded. Oh, and quit being a huge jerk to everyone.
- FuckXboxx, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1So you admit you're not a gamer and you'd rather contribute to a system that is destroying gaming because you're more concerned about doing ***** with your friends...
Real gamers do it for the competition...not the social interaction.

Also I don't think they created the BEST gaming machine they could. They could have at least strove for a 20% failure rate, 33% is pretty high...- Zpanzer, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2failures and RROD aside, the 360 is a excellent gaming console and have a great list of games.
I don't doubt that the day we need more then a DVD to play our games, Microsoft will make the necessary add-on for it.
*prepares for PS3 fan boys to dugg me down*- cthellis, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1You can't toss one in mid-generation, though, so it certainly won't be "the day we need more..." It might cause them to move up the launch date for the Xbox 720 or whatever, but then they're prompting you to spend a lot MORE money to get it. ;-)
The main point is, it's not "need." It's simply that "if you have more space, you'll get better games." They'll give you more, it'll run better, etc. If you give developers fewer limitations, they don't have to scale anything back. You'd just get more. If the 360 came with built-in HD DVD drives, you'd get more than DVD. If they came with BR drives, you'd get more than DVD.
It's always a cost-versus-benefit decision for the console manufacturer, not a "when games need it" analysis. There is no fast-and-loose _need_ scale... it's just all games can USE it.
Sega didn't analyze game "need" and deliver the GD-ROM format... they adopted it because it would give more headroom over CDs, as well as hopefully give them a bit more control over piracy.
Giving developers fewer limitations = better. (Though you also have to keep in mind any potential downsides and limit them, like the PS3 is currently experiencing with developer installations and hard drive space.)

- cthellis, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1So far? Blue Dragon (3 disks), Lost Odyssey (4 disks), Oblivion: GotY Edition (though I think disk 2 of that one just installs the extra content you'd normally have gotten as DLC), Infinite Undiscovery will require them (unknown amount right now)...
So far it's just been Japanase RPG's with a propensity for CG, and that may be the extent of it. Certainly I don't see any game NEEDING to go over that limit otherwise, as they can always scale back the content to fit, but that's kind of the point... it becomes an annoying limitation.
EVERY developer would LOVE to have more room. You literally can't shove enough extra storage or memory at a developer. ;-)
- doctordbx, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1What game on the XBox right now asks you to change Disks?

- DarkprinceArmon, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2My PS3 and Wii both can play games which is what I use the for the most. However, they can also allow me to look at movies stored on the harddrive of another computer, surf the net, and online game. Who's to say that gamers don't want that as well?
- willemvzyl, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3So I should buy an Xbox for gaming, a Blu-ray player for watching Blu-ray movies, a DVD player for watching DVDs, a CD Player for playing music, and an Apple TV for streaming Videos and Music from my computer? I'm glad you have that much cabinet space! :P
- str1fe, on 05/06/2008, -2/+13Really? I use my PS3 to run a word processor.
- serpentor, on 05/06/2008, -3/+20Sadly, they really don't have the choice. If MS execs want to stick with the belief that the 360 is the centerpiece of an HD living room, not being able to play future movies in HD (hd-dvd dead = blu-ray only) is going to hurt that image.
- Cimlite, on 05/06/2008, -7/+3You've got it the wrong way around. It's Sony that keeps pointing out that the PS3 does everything under the sun.
Microsoft has the 360 focused at being a game console first and video player second (downloadable or steamed video that is).- DarkprinceArmon, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I would argue that the Wii is more centered around gaming than the other 2 consoles out there. Wii games, GC games, VC games, Wiiware games. I think the others are catching up, with the PS3 taking the slow approach to its full realization. The 360 confuse me the most because Microsoft only upgraded the hardware halfway, when they went with DVD 9 instead of either HD DVD or Blue Ray DVD. Now they are going to have to reevaluate their strategy when PS3 starts proving that it is the better solution to the HD living room than Microsoft 360. Still My only grip with Sony PS3, is its lack of games I want to play. I'm sure that will change though; very soon in my opinion.
- ScareCrow87, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I don't know why you're dug down, I agre with you completely, but do agree with some of what Darkprince says as well. Each system has its strengths, which have been identified by their respected corporations and have continued to be a focus. This is no longer Nintendo vs. Genesis, or even PS2 vs. XBox. In those cases you basically had two 'equal' machines which differed only primarily in the games. You could argue that one had 'slightly better graphics,' but the difference, if any, was negligable.
Now you have different 'experiences.' The Wii is hands down the champion for the casual gamer and just 'party games.' It does a little online, and plays some media, but those are really secondary. PS3 has been from Day 1, and continues to be, a multimedia machine. Sony made the choice to focus more on this experience than on the gaming, in order to push the Blu-Ray and destroy HD-DVD. They succeeded. But they will continue to push this as an entertainment center that can also play games. And they should. The actual hardware is easily the most powerful and best suited to this purpose, and with things like Folding, Home (if it ever gets here), and the recent implementations of the PS3 eye in interactivity, it will continue to evolve in that way.
The 360 has tried straddling the line - it has succeeded as a game machine, while doing far more of 'entertainment center' than the Wii. Still, MS knows that the strength of the 360 is in games, and here has said as much. Will they need to go to Blu-Ray to keep up with PS3 in quality of games? Hard to say. The PS3 likely will never use its full potential, and may not ever truly use most of the space available on a Blu Ray disk. If companies do start using more of the space, then it will be a problem for MS, as the 360 will either lose games to the PS3 exclusively, or get 'stripped down' versions. Until that happens though, MS will continue to focus on its niche and let Sony do their thing.
- inajeep, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1There is a choice but for those who get the bigger HDD models. Digital downloads are HD-enough. MS really messed up that decision.
- Cimlite, on 05/06/2008, -7/+3You've got it the wrong way around. It's Sony that keeps pointing out that the PS3 does everything under the sun.
- Farmer77, on 05/06/2008, -0/+41Kind of like Nintendo saying they will stick with the cartridge format in the N64...
- ScareCrow87, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0Umm, they DID stick with cartridge until the release of the Wii. I may be misinformed, but I don't recall ever hearing them say that the Wii would be cartridge-based. What we're talking here is changing format on an existing system, not in next generation. I find it highly unlikely that the next iteration of the XBox will be DVD-9. You're going to see Blu-Ray (or something to that effect) in the next gen, but MS MAY not ever add it for this one.
- supers, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0Gamecube used cartridges? news to me.
- ender7074, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0Are those little flat disk shaped things carts? Wow, I've been calling them CDs for years.
- ScareCrow87, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0Umm, they DID stick with cartridge until the release of the Wii. - CynicSight, on 05/06/2008, -7/+5Read the article. It says that while Microsoft isn't developing internal blu-ray drives, they're hiring a third party, Pegatron Technology, to do it instead. So basically, they're too smug to admit they were wrong with HD DVD and want to pan it off quietly to still have their cake and eat it too.
- ninjasenses, on 05/06/2008, -9/+3If I want to watch blu-ray movies, ill buy a separate player. No biggie for me.
- RandaII, on 05/06/2008, -1/+7Its not all about movies. More data = bigger places and even more story line.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Yes, because HD-DVD was never going to be used for games, right?
- str1fe, on 05/06/2008, -1/+32"Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."
So why'd you have the HD-DVD addon in the first place, hm?- Zpanzer, on 05/06/2008, -3/+1I think Microsoft got a lot of blockbuster games for their console(such as Gears of War, Halo 3, GTA IV, Forza Motorsport 2 etc.) and the HD-DVD add-on was just a side dish for people who wanted to watch HD movies.
- inajeep, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I believe your asking why the decision to add it as an option. Money, it tied in with the media center idea and because it helped hem compete with the blu-ray Trojan horse.
- sexysadie86, on 05/06/2008, -2/+9Of course they're going to deny it. No one will buy a 360 now if they think a new model with built in Blu-Ray is just a few months away...
- andypop481, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8It makes sense. If they said that soon, xbox 360s would be coming with blu-ray players, then current xbox sales would plummet, whose gonna buy something that they know is going to be made better in the near future? So clearly, microsoft wants to prep all this quietly, so they can still keep selling xbox's while it all gets done.
- CanIGetAWitness, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2Sure, that, or maybe they just don't want a ***** BR player in a 360.
- zeigual, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3I'm willing to bet they will have to convert at some point. no question.
- ahughes, on 05/06/2008, -3/+1This actually makes a lot of sense. If they can deliver HD content via Live then why would they spend the money on creating a blu ray drive for the xbox360; especially if they are going to continue to produce games on HD-DVD.
- InitialDMP5, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5Microsoft doesn't produce any games in HD DVD format. The games for the 360 are DVD. And the HD DVD drive that was available only played movies.
- jasondefaoite, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2The problem with HD content via Live ... it is US centric. What about the millions of consoles sold outside of the US. No HD plans for them. Blu Ray would be a nice ad on for that reason alone.
- AmericansRevolt, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1americans are being AWFULLY slow to adopt high def movies let alone the rest of the world. most of our tv's still cant output the clarity of a regular dvd... ***** were years away from high def being the norm. in reality we are seeing that the internet is the main place for high-def content already. and i dont think any physical media is going to overcome high-bandwidth internet connections with large cheap storage.
- AllyOfReason, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0What if you want to own the movie?
- ScareCrow87, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0A second problem is the bandwith used if more and more reliance is on HD downloading. I have had a friend had his internet service suspended because he was 'in the top 5% of users in terms of usage.'
- vasireddy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1hmmm, this is getting to the crazy levels!! Why would anyone even think that microsoft would accept and admit publicly that they will a blue-ray console some time in the future!? then no body will by xbox 360 now and wait for the blu-ray console which will lead to large downtrend in their console sales. No company will admit that new features will be released in near future especially in consumer electronics.
stop reporting all these MS denials! they dont mean that they are not building a blu-ray console or not. - StevesJobs, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3wtf msoft?
- snobrder218, on 05/06/2008, -7/+8Well, finally, now PS3 has something to ***** off 360 users with.
Now you know how we felt with your dumbass "MGS4 ON 360!!!!" ***** for, how long?- kencurran, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0PS3 fails
- aegis9975, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2Honestly, if they plan on eventually having a Blu-ray drive in the 360, they should just leave a vague "no comment" instead of a "no plans" stance. They would very much look like asses if they actually get a Blu-ray 360. I understand the economics, but there is no reason to outright lie to your fanbase about it. Personally, I would love a Blu-ray 360, while current Blu-ray disk prices are too high for every single purchases (especially on 2nd tier movies), its vastly superior to any unconverted DVD on a real HDTV.
- tylermenezes, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3Tomorrow we'll see another "Microsoft to announce Blu-ray drive for 360 - NORLY!"
- archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -5/+10Has anyone kicked around the idea that they can't put it in the 360. Add-on def but not in the 360. They would have to make two versions of the game. One on DVD for the 18 million or so people with consoles already. Who knows if 18 million are still operational. And a Blu ray copy of the game for people with the new SKU's.
I have all three consoles and if I'm forced to buy a fourth I'm going to be *****. I probably wouldn't buy it. The only way I would buy a 360 BD is they told me it was the only way I could play Gears Of War 2.- masterthiefster, on 05/06/2008, -0/+11Um, Blu-ray drives can read DVDs (and CDs), you know... even if it was built in it would surely be only for movies.
- archerOFloaf, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Yeah but that doesn't make sense. If you make it a add on then it becomes available to the 18 million other people who already bought a console. If you put it in the console itself those 18 million other people are probably just going to get PS3's.
- cthellis, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1All they'd need is one that can also act as a 12x DVD player, and it wouldn't change anything.
Now would developers be making games FOR the BR drive...? Not so much, as they wouldn't want to disenfranchise the far larger segment that doesn't have the drive, nor would they want to lose the potential sales.
You might get some people who'd make a BR release of a multi-disk game as well to test the market, but that's not going to be a very popular option to "just getting the game under that 7.9GB cap." (Or whatever it is for the 360. I know it's less than the full DL DVD, but not by how much.)
Unless MS decides to just swap out ALL the drives on ALL the versions of their consoles and WITHOUT raising the price--which I certainly can't see--there's almost no chance we'd see close to a 50/50 split among the installed base, let alone over--which is where I figure it would have to be for developers to feel comfortable with bothering with the BR drive.
- conkers209, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2Well of course MS will say that. If they say yes, we are planing on a blu-ray version of the 360, that will stop people from buying a 360 at this point. they will have a blu-ray add on like they did for HD-DVD, that's a giving. But I rather have the a add on than built in, that way it gives people an option to get a add on drive for blu-ray or let the others use dvds. Yes I know about the market place but for me, I use netflix, why give that up.
- qorsair, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Apologies if I'm misunderstanding you, but Netflix ships Blu-ray, just go here to set it up:
http://www.netflix.com/FormatPreferences?lnkctr=ya ...
You can set your preferences to ship blu-ray if the movie in your queue has been published in blu-ray.
Also, blu-ray players can play standard DVDs.

- jesusxenu, on 05/06/2008, -4/+3There still is a good chance blu-ray is coming to the 360. Prior to the adding the elite xbox sku with HDMI, microsoft publicly denounced all articles suggesting HDMI was coming to the 360. They also said it would be for the elite only, but it eventually spread to the other sku's. They played the same game with the 120 gig hard drives. Constantly sayings that they will not be releasing larger drives until just prior their release. Regarding the "MSG4 ON THE 360" post, that is nothing like this, nice try.
- infinitespecter, on 05/06/2008, -1/+14These are the same people that swore up and down that all those pics we saw of the HDMI 360 were fakes and that they had no intention of bringing a black console to the market. Then, just like now, everytime a rumor came up, they would say that component was fine and that HDMI was totally unnecessary. Then a few months later they announce the black, HDMI enabled 360 Elite. Point is, they have no credibility.
- sathias, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1The point is they want to announce their plans themselves, not have Sony or random 3rd party companies announce it for them. It's standard policy.
- m00nstone, on 05/06/2008, -1/+20Wake up the gullible, IT'S COMING. Two separate manufacturers have leaked it. Remember HDMI. MS denied that right to the moment the elite was announced. Then they said it would only be available on the Elite. Why would they kill current sales months before the release of a new 360!? Think about it people.
- DuyNguyen, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Now you thinking!! It's all about selling console to meet or beat the competition number every quarter!! MS have to release sale and profit every quarter, so if second or third quarter is not well than the stock drop!!!
- archer75, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1And another company said they were contracted to built blu-ray players for microsoft. I wonder....
- cadmiumpaint, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3its for the zune.......lol
- nowave, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3"Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused..."
If its "all about gaming" then why did they invest resources to have an HD-DVD add on in the first place? Also aren't they going to launch some tv/movie downloading service for x360?- DuyNguyen, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Because xbox is competing with Sony industries! Plus HD DVD is cheaper when Xbox decide to go with Toshiba, I believe Toshiba wouldn't charge a high commission FEE for using HD-DVD technology. Plus Sony Alway over charge everything. I believe this is second time SONY WON a Format war! Do you Remember VHS and the COMPACT DISC (CD)? Sony Won those format war, way back in the day. I was hopping HD-DVD would win the format War for only ONE reason 11111 Cheap!!!!
- chakl, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1there is a downloading service called xbox live complete with competitive priced movie rentals

- tamuengineer, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1VHS was not a Sony product that was BataMax. Sony lost that war (although Beta is still used in the film industry just not format for home players). Do you have any clue what your talking about?

- i4mt3hwin, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Dumb, of course it's coming. If they said it was then no one would buy any of their online movie content or new xbox's (if indeed they are going to be shipping one with it built in).
- mlvassallo, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1WTF? http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/02/xbox-360-blu-ra ...
- kentonguy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2At least I can still hope that the rumors will be true one day
- swean, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2even if microsoft did adopt blu ray, we would not see any games being developed using the technology.
- Turpoid, on 05/06/2008, -3/+9Just wanted to add something to this conversation that i think is worth remarking. I would prefer a separate blu-ray player as it would be less wear on the XBOX's rom-drive. Just something to think about. Personally, I don't care about all the hoopla about what video game system does what. I really like the games that are available on the 360 because it's been around longer and MS has done a great job of transforming the industry and working with developers to bring games that i would like to play, Gears, Mass Effect, GTA IV, Bioshock, GRID, PGR 4, Alan Wake, Prototype, Burnout, Dead Space....etc. I could list games all day that are on this system that i would like and have liked from the past, so I'm content (though some more games with more of a great story and thought-provoking nature would be great, but it's still a medium in it's infancy, so the best is yet to come). If the other companies pump out something that has a great library in the future then i will go that way as well.
As a 32 year old, i'm not caught up in the hype as i've been around long enough to know what propaganda is and what it actually DOES. I like the xbox, i like the controller, i like the wireless, i like the blade system, i like streaming movies, music and pictures to my HDTV from my laptop, and i LOVE the games that are out and coming out soon. Period. But again, I don't care if there's a blu-ray player in it. This is all marketing propaganda over something that will be land-fill again in two years just like EVERY SINGLE THING YOU'VE EVER OWNED IN THE PAST!!!! I'll buy a blu-ray player when they're under $100 next year. So i'm good. If they sell an xbox with blu-ray in it, then good for them, it's the tech that's better in my opinion (from seeing both myself) and there's always a good ending if you have more room on the disk. So in the end, who cares....it is what it will be.
Do i think MS is wrong for holding back information about what they're doing and how that might be screwing their customers? Well, all i can say to that is: The next time you see a Coca-Cola commercial telling you how great their product is, head online and find the statistical reports on the connection between one can of pop a day and the 50% increased risk of type 2 diabetes, and then come back on here and act shocked that a company is lying to you. Every single thing you own was 'SOLD' to you. Your whole life is based on lies and deceit. You just don't realize it. It's a glorified, talked up cd player. Get over it. ;)- BJLStorm, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2Write a little more?
- DuyNguyen, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Nice! We have a philosopher in here:) I know what you mean but for a Guy like me whose own a 1080P projector, all the movie that I want to see on my projector is 1080P that why it's such a big deal! If xbox does come out with blu-ray than I'll hold back but if not than I have to buy a PS3 for blu-ray player:) Everything about company is lies! You just have to be smart enough to predict what they have to do, I believe those business website have the best insight into company plan.
- cthellis, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Methinks you might want to get lied to and deceived about a bit more medication, and buy that. ;-)
- BJLStorm, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2Write a little more?
- sh4d0w4lk3r, on 05/06/2008, -3/+10Everyone says DVD space is enough for games, and that Blu-ray is pointless...so why was lost odyssey on FOUR discs? And Oblivion GOTY edition on 2 discs? I'm all for huge epic rpgs fitting on one disc, rather not switch discs while playing FFXIII. So unless you work the Blu-ray into the games, the ps3 will be the console for rpgs in the future.
- 3141592653589, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4To put it quite simply : Microsoft will deny any rumors of new hardware because it would hurt sales of current Xbox 360s. The same happened for the 360 Elite and price drops. They don't want people to WAIT for a price drop or a restructure of hardware.
- Omis, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0How would it hurt sales? Not having a blu-ray drive is just helping Sony. People are picking up PS3 as a cheap blu-ray player. It's practically fueling it's sales. And I'm sure quite a few of them are 360 owners who have held off buying one, if they knew a blu-ray attachment is for the 360.
- Varz, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3Oh WOW multi-disc games, you know half the games for the PS1 were multi-disc an no-one even cared.
- lonehunter01, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3That's because there wasn't an alternative. Here, there clearly is. With that logic, let's rip out hard drives and go back to using memory cards. After all, people did with PS1 and no-one even cared.
- ChinezePanda, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1There wasnt an alternative.
And I cared.
