- PWoT, on 06/15/2009, -3/+1121up posts a rumor about this. They put "rumor" in the headline. This site picks it up, and changes the headline to make it--falsely--sound like fact. Instant front page on digg.
Awesome. - inactive, on 06/15/2009, -20/+128When they says Wii sales plummet, I guess that means outselling competition 2:1?
- kingfoot, on 06/15/2009, -3/+81as opposed to original 5:1 sell rate
- SgtQuackers, on 06/15/2009, -4/+74Microsoft would not be stupid enough to splinter their Xbox community by releasing an upgraded model. The Xbox 360 is still selling very well and then have room to drop the price more to help sales. If they released an upgraded model it would hurt all those people that bought an Xbox 360 since some newer games might not be designed to work on the older system. They might release a new Xbox in a smaller package with a Natal built in but they are not going to change the hardware.
- jrm125, on 06/15/2009, -14/+56Am I the only one rife with skepticism on this whole Natal thing?
No hate for MS...if it can work it'd be amazing. But I'm thinking they may have oversold it with their demo video. And the idea of integrating it into the console doesn't seem feasible. - djphatjive, on 06/15/2009, -6/+44I don't care what they say! I bought a Wii and play it maybe once a month. Not a win for me.
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -5/+42All this movement crap, im a gamer against exercise, im a G.A.E.
- sexybobo, on 06/15/2009, -9/+46Soon Wii sales will fall to 0 there can't be that many people out there left to sell them to. Right now the majority of there sales are to indigenous tribes in Africa who just found out about them.
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -2/+37I'm openly G.A.E. as well.
- Elranzer, on 06/15/2009, -3/+38I guess it's time for Microsoft and Sony's motion control gimmicks then?
In Sony's case, I must add: second attempt at motion gimmick. - anexanhume, on 06/15/2009, -2/+24I'm actively G.A.E., which is kind of a paradox.
- chunkybeefstu, on 06/15/2009, -2/+24You just bashed Nintendo, yet your name is CoD4 and your profile picture is Dark Samus.
I'm picking up a reading on my troll-dar. - sexybobo, on 06/15/2009, -3/+22Whether or not you liked it has nothing to do with the fact that you and every one else bought one.
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -2/+21I was gonna just gonna suggest we express our solidarity with some sort of demonstration, like maybe a G.A.E Pride parade, but then I remembered that parades involve a lot of marching, which kinda defeats the purpose.
- Elranzer, on 06/15/2009, -4/+23Considering Natal was demoed by Peter Molyneux, you should be skeptical. You should know by now not to trust his promises...
- DeathToaster, on 06/15/2009, -2/+20How the crap are they going to "integrate" Natal into the Xbox? Bundle it, sure, but what if my console isn't facing the couch?
- AmazingSteve, on 06/15/2009, -7/+25Trolling fail.
- HurricaneDC, on 06/15/2009, -1/+19It would still be stupid. Part of the lure of consoles is that the one I buy at launch can run the same games as the one a guy buys five years after launch, without any difference in performance or graphics quality.
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -8/+25They have, by and large. The newer models do not break any more than other consoles.
You may want to move out of 2007. - jawshoeuh, on 06/15/2009, -4/+18yea the wii may sell like hotcakes, but when you look at the game attach rate you get a different story.
all those millions of wii owners who apparently never cared to buy another game and are completely satisfied with only owning wii sports aren't the most tantalizing customer base for publishers. - modsuperstar, on 06/15/2009, -0/+14We all know all Nintendo would have to do to goose sales would be to drop the price to $199 and put Wii Sports 2 as a pack-in.
- PRlME, on 06/15/2009, -3/+14I have no idea how its a gimmick, Nintendo waited for the price and technology to line up perfectly, unlike the eye toy. Nintendo's motion controller was well planned. MS and Sony just had version2.0 of there hardware. I'm not going to bother typing anymore your just a ***** moron who probably still believes that it's polygon count that makes a game.
- jbarket, on 06/15/2009, -1/+11I think the only thing we've proven is that they work well in some situations and not well in others. Wii Sports, for all of its simplicity, is an amazing title that pushed Wiis out the door.
If this allows for more than waggle control, as promised, it'll open up some more doors, but it's still a matter of picking and choosing, so by providing it as an accessory and not the primary method of input, I think Microsoft could do well here. - RudeTurnip, on 06/15/2009, -0/+10It doesn't make sense to have Natal integrated in the "built-in" sense. My 360 goes on the bottom rack of the entertainment center and it out of my view, while my Live Vision camera is on the top of my entertainment center. That's the obvious place for the Natal controller. What I would like to see from Microsoft is a 360 with the same horsepower as the current model, but smaller, DEAD FREAKING SILENT and with expandable hard drive options to go along with its new program of direct online purchases of larger games.
- Spire3660, on 06/15/2009, -4/+14Actually PC rules online gaming....but w/e
- bloodhound01, on 06/15/2009, -2/+12Wii sales are plummeting because everyone and their mom(literally) has one already.
- Elranzer, on 06/15/2009, -2/+11"I don't see a future for the Nintendo Wii and if Nintendo doesn't change their game plan to stay ahead of the competition in some form or another, then I don't really see a future for Nintendo either."
Clearly delusional. I'll bet you think this is THE year the PS3 will become the #1 console. This is the year! - jrm125, on 06/15/2009, -2/+11While I'm not personally a fan of them, I also can't deny there's a large audience of people who enjoy them, appreciate them, and make purchases based around them.
- FritoPendejo, on 06/15/2009, -6/+15Which company are you talking about? The Wii is one of the most gimmicky devices ever made. Pair the hardware of yesterday with a controller that makes the user believe they have more control than they really do and you have the Wii. You could mount one of those controllers on a paint shaker and keep a game of Wii tennis going for hours. Just because something sells well doesn't mean it's not crap.
- suavivity, on 06/15/2009, -1/+10Perhaps....but so have 360 and PS3 sales. Of course the article fails to make that very obvious comparison.
- peestandingup, on 06/15/2009, -1/+9I guess Plummet = Not being sold out
- NeoTechni, on 06/15/2009, -3/+11@waver:
I've seen Sony showing off the exact same stuff Natal does with the PSeye.
@Opiate:
MS gave us the achievement system, and no matter how you like it, it is extremely popular to the point where Sony was forced to copy it.
MS mandated all developers support HD resolutions and surround sound, forcing a minimum standard that benefits gamers
MS has a feature in the firmware that lets you set default control styles, so you can have every FPS invert the Y axis. A feature Sony should have implemented
MS gave us the unified online profile, which Sony was forced to copy.
MS integrated wireless controllers into the system, which Sony and Nintendo were forced to copy.
MS made a cable that works as both composite and component, something Sony should have copied
MS built a headset port into the controller, something Sony should have copied
I admit a lot of what 360 does was copied from PSP, but give MS credit, they came up with a lot. - gametavern, on 06/15/2009, -1/+8Wii Sales have plummeted?
- Barackalypse, on 06/15/2009, -9/+16All I have to do is waste my time on the phone to call them about it, wait for the shipping label, box it up (oh yeah, they don't supply a box anymore), send it back and then wait weeks for it to come back and eventually break again because they either fix your existing one or send you an older repaired model that will continue to be susceptible to the problem. Good customer service would replace known faulty models with new ones that have fixed the issue.
- shininia, on 06/15/2009, -1/+8@Cheese MAG is going to fail because getting 4 people to work together through a headset is nearly impossible. Now add another 124 people to each team.
- modsuperstar, on 06/15/2009, -1/+8What everyone seems to forget about Nintendo is they also produce the biggest selling handheld system, so filling the supply pipeline with 2 very popular consoles can be tough. Plus they don't want to expose themselves by building more capacity, then having demand drop off.
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -1/+8Nintendo isn't going anywhere. Even if their console flopped (which it didn't, it was a huge success), the success of their handheld division alone would keep them afloat.
- LocalDocal, on 06/15/2009, -4/+11You know, I honestly can't believe idiotic posts like this are still being dugg up. People seem to forget that Nintendo's games are selling better than ever; they haven't seen sales like this since their old monopoly with the NES, which should be ludicrous.
Yes, there is a smaller attachment rate with third party games, but hell, considering the third party games I've played, I think they deserved it. I don't give a damn what kind of image it gives third party developers, but if they keep releasing half-ass games, they deserve lesser sales.
Hopefully, the upcoming games from High Voltage Software will be a different story because they're one of the few developers truly putting an effort into the Wii. Frankly, I can't name another developer putting in the same effort as them. - RC212V, on 06/15/2009, -2/+9Motion controllers are great and all but are totally useless if they don't have games specifically designed from the ground up to utilize motion control. For MS (or Sony for that matter) to make their motion controller relevant they need to invest in making AAA motion control titles. Otherwise Natal will just be a useless case of 'me-too'. As always, it's about the games, not the hardware.
- Coffeedemon, on 06/15/2009, -2/+8Moron. Would take less time to google a game he created to get his name than to type that.
- jbarket, on 06/15/2009, -2/+8Agreed.
There were similar rumors about the 65nm 360s, the Elite, et cetera. They may increase storage, integrate wireless or any number of other upgrades that involve adding peripherals to the system, but I doubt they'll do any kind of upgrade.
The simple fact is that if they provide developers with more horsepower, the developers are going to use it. The last Microsoft needs is to turn the 360 into the Wii where ported games don't look as good. - Elijah17, on 06/15/2009, -1/+7Then you'll probably have to move it...
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -2/+8Saying that Natal is a better version of Sony's EyeToy is like saying a PSP is a better version of a Gameboy Color.
They also didn't model it after the EyeToy. This kind of "dream" has been around for ages. Sony was simply the first attempt. It failed miserably mostly because the technology just wasn't there, but also the implication wasn't that great either. They went about using what they had all wrong too, but then again, because of the lack of technology, they didn't really have much to work with. - EtherGnat, on 06/15/2009, -1/+7"There aren't very many million-seller titles on the Wii"
Actually the Wii is producing million seller titles faster than any other console. The Wii has 51 (1.6 per month); the 360 has 64 (1.5 per month); and the PS3 has 22 (0.7 per month). If you exclude first party titles the 360 takes a slight lead over the Wii (1.2 per month vs. 1.1). - HCProgramr, on 06/15/2009, -1/+7Ain't that the truth...
- inactive, on 06/15/2009, -0/+6PC's do rule gaming. 360 is the next closest thing.
- EtherGnat, on 06/15/2009, -3/+9"but when you look at the game attach rate you get a different story. "
The Wii's attach rate is fine. In fact it's historically been higher than the PS3, although the PS3 recently took a slight lead. A 6.2 attach rate for a system aimed at casual gamers is pretty good IMO.
"those millions of wii owners who apparently never cared to buy another game...aren't the most tantalizing customer base for publishers."
The Wii sells more software per year than any other console. Soon it will have sold more games total than the 360 despite that console's one year head start, with total Wii game sales at 121 million and 360 sales at 124 million. Why would that not be attractive to publishers again?
People keep repeating these lies but that doesn't make it true.
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?st ... - SkippyDoorknob, on 06/15/2009, -0/+5I think they mean that the software to support it would be an integral part of the system, not that it would physically be attached to the front of the console. That would be incredibly stupid.
- UselessTrivia, on 06/15/2009, -0/+4The wii sells more software per year, but it doesn't have those sales concentrated in any major way. There aren't very many million-seller titles on the Wii, but pretty much every wii game sells at least a couple hundred thousand.
This has the effect of making sure that publishers don't concentrate too much money on Wii development, because it's not likely to sell as many copies. This is good and bad, becasue as a publisher I can be fairly sure that I'll make a modest return on my investment, but it doesn't prompt anyone to put in huge production values because the promise of reward is somewhat diminished. Unless your game has the word "Mario" in it, it's probably not going to sell a million copies.
On the 360 and PS3 by contrast there's a huge variation in the average sale numbers for titles. People are out there rolling the dice. They know if they want to strike it big they have to make a big investment. They might hit a home run and sell a couple million copies, or they might tank and sell bupkis.
This won't last forever, by the way. Once the Wii Kool-aid wears off, people won't buy marginally good casual titles just because it had a pretty picture on the box and promised "immersive motion controls". As the "casual" game market matures, so will the tastes of this new audience, and they'll demand publishers take more risk. - DaFoxx, on 06/15/2009, -2/+6I have faith in Natal because it seems like Microsoft is trying to push it to be more then just another addon. This is one of the prime examples of it, by including Natal in the future bundles.
