- chaosblade77, on 10/16/2009, -2/+21Watch them call it the Nü.
- preppypoof, on 10/16/2009, -5/+22tell that to the millions upon millions of games and hardware sold for the wii
- jrm125, on 10/16/2009, -3/+18Anyone else still not sold on this thing? I see demos and videos...but everything's been so closed and limited; nothing like the demo video they showed.
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/16/2009, -1/+14They also have avatars already
- Nlewis4, on 10/16/2009, -4/+16microsoft better find a way to keep natal from becoming a stupid gimmick since that is the direction motion controls are heading
- noahgelman, on 10/16/2009, -1/+12They need to make sure its really really responsive. No one is gonna want to play it if it cant track movements near real-time.
- diggduggDOOM, on 10/16/2009, -2/+13I think that's already taken by Nintendo.
- chaosblade77, on 10/17/2009, -1/+11From what I've seen, very few people are sold on it.
Personally, I just can't get over the fact you don't have any sort of controller. None of the games I play seem like they would work with Natal. - quamb, on 10/16/2009, -3/+11Didn't Microsoft, Sony, Epic Games etc laugh off Nintendo's motion controller as a gimmick? And also made remarks about the name "Wii" (as we all did)?
Funny how once Nintendo started making epic $$$$ and rose to no.1 again, the entire industry quickly turned around and are now trying to catch up. - ShingoEX, on 10/17/2009, -2/+8"all games will always be stupid gimmicky mini-games."
Translation: "I've never played games like RE4 or Metroid Prime 3, and am just making ignorant assumptions". - filip3311, on 10/17/2009, -2/+7Microsoft is not copying the Wii, they are leap frogging over Wii technology. Sony however is definitely copying the Wii.
- whatthefu, on 10/16/2009, -3/+8Nintendo did a fine job. They upped the bar and all that. I just hope whatever company tries motion-control next will be able to take it to the next level.
- grubwort, on 10/16/2009, -3/+7From FTA: Microsoft is "following Nintendo's lead"
Shock, awe, yawn, etc, etc. - chaosblade77, on 10/17/2009, -2/+6I don't know why you're getting buried. Most of Microsoft's products aren't original, they took other companies ideas and either improved them or threw money at them to make them successful (or not so successful, see Zune or their attempts at beating Google).
- Nintendesert, on 10/17/2009, -1/+5Holy *****! A billion times? I'm sold.
- styromaniac, on 10/18/2009, -0/+3Wait! Wait!
Escape from Bug Island had to pass strict quality standards? Where was I? - AwesomeDeluxe, on 10/17/2009, -1/+4My guess is that Natal will be prohibitively expensive and not win quite enough third party support, ultimately meaning that while it might sell with their existing install base it won't widen it much. Microsoft needs to realize that quirky branding is not what made Wii appealing to the masses. It was, in fact, the strength of the system--particularly at launch--that made that dubious branding a success.
Although Microsoft (and Sony) consider this the middle of their consoles life cycles, Nintendo is probably already developing the "wii 2." Theoretically, this puts Nintendo in a good position to close the gap in motion control technology that its competitors will gain when their own ideas hit the market. - gilbes, on 10/17/2009, -2/+5It is the tried and true strategy for any video game company not doing as well as they want. Just copy Nintendo. It has been working for nearly 30 years now.
But to be fair, Nintendo did steal a page from Sony's playbook. The strategy is to just let people publish pretty much any game they want. The PS and PS2 had great success with basically no lower limit on game quality. Nintendo used to have a higher barrier of enterance for publishers. Like Sony, they have lowered that bar. - Borgcube, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3From FTA? Well, let me just enter my PIN number in the ATM machine and buy everything. Hope I don't get HIV virus and get sick from the AIDS syndrome.
- h0ly, on 10/17/2009, -1/+4Yes, someone should really compile a video containing all contradictory statements made in this generation.
Some gamers seem to have a really short memory. - doshindude, on 10/18/2009, -0/+2not for nothin', but that isn't the same as natal....it's just the camera without motion sensing capabilities.
- LostOverThere, on 10/18/2009, -0/+2Well, remember when Nintendo had all those guidelines in the NES/SNES days banning blood, sex and religion? Developing for them was like living in Nazi Germany.
- Nlewis4, on 10/17/2009, -1/+3I own a wii too but certain games just don't play right with motion controls. sometimes you just want to lay back with the controller and play the game not flail your arms around in the air.
- styromaniac, on 10/18/2009, -1/+3@Topher06: It's more than just detecting your silhouette. It can actually track individual finger movements and pick up your voice.
There's even more than what I said here. What matters though is that they somehow keep the console's title line-up from being clogged with *****.
I once believed in the Wii, but I have been thoroughly disappointed. - Shinku3, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2I would think, given how the wii works, that nintendo would be making a second generation of their controllers, especially since all the motion controls are in the wiimotes. That's why the motion plus came out, and if they do this it's cheaper for the consumer and for nintendo.
- Borgcube, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2Well, yes, actually it IS.
- Khast, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2Granted Nintendo had a higher bar for quality in the 80s....but I do seem to recall a few games (well..way MORE than a few) that were absolute crap. I don't think it had anything to do with quality control...
- sanman, on 10/17/2009, -2/+4I'm a Wii owner, and still love my console
but from the Natal demo videos, the whole idea of natural body movement really looked cool
It would really change the face of FPS gaming for example, if you could just duck and aim naturally - that would almost be like VR
I know I'd really get excited over something like that
I wonder how industry competitors will top it? - Thistlejack, on 10/17/2009, -1/+3That sounds like the credenza I bought at Ikea.
- chaosblade77, on 10/17/2009, -3/+5What do you mean by "mature audiences?" The crowd that thinks they are hardcore because they play games with blood and M ratings or the crowd that plays games like F-Zero GX or Demon's Souls?
They definitely aren't focusing on the former and never have. I'd like to see them release some more games that fall in that second group though (new F-Zero and Fire Emblem please!). It doesn't really mesh with Nintendo's current philosophy though.
And I can't say much other than I disagree, regarding fun games. I'd already put the Wii ahead of the N64, and by the middle of next year probably ahead of the underrated Gamecube (yes, I prefer the Gamecube to the N64). I don't think it (or any console, for that matter) will ever reach SNES(/PSX) levels of awesome though. - sTiKyt, on 10/17/2009, -2/+4True, but like the wii it's up to developers to come up with new genres to make use of the hardware. Maybe creating something greater than the games that are currently played now in the process.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/17/2009, -1/+3I will buy the !@#* out of this (NATAL). And I'm not even an especially big MS fan.
- djdingo, on 10/16/2009, -2/+4Natal...where you are the controller.
Has anyone played TotemBall? You need the Xbox 360 camera to play it and it's free on Xbox Live Arcarde.
You hold your arms straight out and move them up and down to increase/decrease speed of your "ball". Kind of like driving a tank.
It SUCKS! - skztr, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1counterplex: I admit that I need to try WiiMotion+ at some point (hoping it drops in price to the point where I don't need to spend £80 just to try it out [game w/ add-on + another add-on, since who the hell has played Nintendo by themselves from N64 onward?])
But to say that the original Wii was "next gen" is absurd. The motion capture is so poor that all that what Wii brought to the scene amounts to is /instructions/ that say you should be standing up and moving while playing. Instructions are not revolutionary. Microsoft and Sony, if they just wanted to copy Nintendo, could very easily have just added the same instructions to a few new games, and they'd have been done with it. Instead, they chose to independently develop /actual/ motion controllers. Microsoft saw someone playing around with the Wii, who really understood its potential and how under-utilized it was, and snatched him up for their dev team. I fully expect Microsoft to obliterate the competition with their motion control system (Disclaimer: I use Linux), though only because I don't trust Nintendo after the Wii, and Sony's entry into the race appears to be Samba de Amigo + EyeToy.
With the release of WiiMotion+, it just tells me that Nintendo rushed out the door to meet a release date, and only finished their motion capture later. If it had originally released with WiiMotion+, perhaps I wouldn't have had so many bad experiences with it. First time I demo'd in the store, I realized I could get the character to move and win by just flailing around randomly; After I bought one for Christmas (some people just don't listen to pleas of "it sucks! wouldn't you rather have nothing?"), I found that a quick snap downward could win almost every game, aside from Okami, which absolutely refused to recognize the "painting" motions, and Super Monkey Ball, which my wife refuses to even touch anymore because she's so annoyed with how poor the motion recognition is (even navigating the menu is a major chore). In the past six months, I have used the WiiMote as an input device on my laptop more than I have used the Wii, and I only tried that for a half-hour or so. - DennisOhlson, on 10/16/2009, -4/+5If you cannot accept truth that is in front of you either, you are blinded by a love once lost as well.
- counterplex, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2skztr, you should try out "WiiMotion+" since it does add those 7 to 9 orders of magnitude that you're looking for to the motion detection that the original Wiimote has.
As far as the rest of your criticism is concerned, keep in mind that the Wii when it came out was (and still is until there is competition in the realm) truly nextgen. Sure it didn't have top notch graphics and all the processing power that's packed into a PS3 or even an XBox360. However it completely changed the dynamics of game control to the point that even Sony and Microsoft are coming out with competing control methods.
In other words, the Wii did it first which implies it was at the beginning of the next generation while Sony and Microsoft were still trying to eke out the last drop of performance out of last gen.
That's my $0.02.
Disclaimer: I own all three consoles (and an HDTV to get the most out of the graphics) and enjoy playing all three very much. - Myztry, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2The difference boys and girls is that while you have a Wii (wii), the other has a Vii.
- counterplex, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1Not often you see a pun where the alternate meaning is in a different language.
For the uninitiated, Nü is a take on "Nous" which is "We" in French. The connection to the Wii should be obvious. - ShingoEX, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2Yeah...so piss-poor they're #1 in the industry.
- sanman, on 10/17/2009, -2/+3so Natal will have downloadable shovelware?
- gilbes, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1Review the guidlines the different consoles have and had to get approved to be concidered for review to be on a system. Then get back to me.
- counterplex, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1skztr, there are a couple of issues here.
The first has to do with lack of sensitivity on the Wiimote which basically means you don't _have_ to get up and play any games the way the game instructs you to do. This is valid since I've seen it. Having said that, it became noticeable to me only after I tried out the Wii Motion+ and saw the much higher degree of control I had over first-party games e.g. Wii Sports Bowling vs. Wii Sports Resort Bowling. I know of a lot of people who have adjusted to the much lower sensitivity of the original Wiimote and have difficulty playing with the Wii Motion+ enabled controller. This implies that while it's worse than what's available right now, it _was_ functional and entertainingly so.
The second point you make goes more against individual game makers than Nintendo. The main first-party game for the Wii was Wii Sports and it made good use of the controller probably because Nintendo both knew of the limitations and the full extent of the controller's capabilities. Even games such as Super Mario Galaxy didn't really use the Wiimote much - it mostly relied on the nunchucks with a few wiggling motions thrown in just because. And that's how most of the third party games felt like - wiggling motions thrown in just because.
My thought is you should judge the potential of the controller from the games that make best use of it and based on that, not only is the control scheme (and thus the console) nextgen as far as I'm concerned, but Wii Motion+ adds anything you think might be missing from the current control scheme thus keeping it firmly in nextgen territory.
As an aside, I recently bought Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for the Wii [just one Wii Motion+ since surprisingly I _do_ play some games alone :)] despite the much better graphics that the PS3 version of the game has. My main motivation was increased realism and control which is more important to me than the graphics. Sure, in a couple of years Nintendo might come out with a console that's got full 1080p graphics and looks as awesome as it's fun to play but that'll just be icing on the cake. - chaosblade77, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2I meant relative to the likes of Windows, which was not the first GUI operating system, the various software in Office, which was not the first productivity software, or the 360 which has done better than almost any analyst predicted.
Those weren't examples of unsuccessful products, they were examples of unsuccessful attempts to overtake the existing market leader like they did/are doing with the above examples. - DennisOhlson, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2Buried chaos blade for stupidity.
Mature could be games that people who liked nintendo grew up with. example they matured with age. And metroid other m is looking pretty mature if you know what i mean.
They did focus on the former in the n64 era, instead of focusing in 2d-they focused on 3-d and some of the games were remarkable.
LOL at fun games that the wii has that the n64 has. The wii has had shovelware, and super mario galaxy, loz tp was not good. neither was super smash brothers causualbrawl. Ok lets see n64. 007 new age fps revolutionary for its time., banjo kazooie, banjo tooie my two favorite games of all time. and grant kirkhope is a epic underated musician. , loz mm loz ocarina of time 2 best zeldas of all time.. conkers bad fur day, paper mario 3d version of super mario rpg. mario party mario tennis. meh but new super smash brothers new way to play a fighting game., those stupid cheesy wrestling games. mischief makers, awesome underated hard game super mario 64 enuf said, dk 64 enuf said, mario kart 64 enuf said. Everything was fresh and original. Bomberman 64 series. That gameplay was the greatest bar none.. They are both good. Chameleon twist. GLOVER. gex the gecko. jet force Gemini. Pokemon snap. Pokemon stadium. Snowboard kids. star fox, the star wars series was good on 64. Vigilante 8.
Hey the two main games from psx metal gear/ ff7 were going to be on the n64 originally. but since they wanted more game space they made it for the psx.
psx was great but i got into n64 a ton more. Psx had original and n64 had original and re-playability.
ds and snes is very good. Wish they would make a loz la or oracle of seasons. ocarina of time. bk n64 remakes for the ds though. - skztr, on 10/19/2009, -0/+0counterplex: I will admit that people have been entertained by Wii. However, I would not say that this is due to it being functional. Rather, I would say that what Nintendo offered people was the /idea/ of a new way of playing. ("Hey, you can stand up while you play!"). My only real point is that Nintendo offered people an idea, and a controller which had pretty much nothing other than tilt-sensitivity (which in practice amounted to nothing more than "flick your wrist instead of push a button". Yes, even from first-party games.)
Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft have seen this "idea" take off, and rather than simply offering the idea, they offer the functionality as well. Demos of WiiMotion+ have seemed promising, and I do need to wonder if Nintendo had the capability for the "real thing" all along, but decided that they could reach a wider audience if waving your arm at the right moment was considered equivalent to actually doing things "the right way"
Personally, I'm just hoping Natal includes head-tracking. I'm quite ready for a free-roaming head-tracking version of Mirror's Edge - sanman, on 10/17/2009, -2/+2@Nlewis4,
I hear what you're saying, so obviously there should be different control schemes for different types of games. You don't use a steering wheel controller to play a FPS game, etc. But the fact is that there are plenty of types of games that could be extremely enjoyable if you could use natural full-body interaction, similar to VR.
In a first-person 3D game, full-body motion could be awesome and immersive. Imagine you have to punch and kick the hell out of enemies to get through a level. That could really kick ass.
My favorite games on Wii are Wii Boxing and the swordfighting in Wii Sports Resort. Natural motion for combat is really cool. - Karoupa, on 10/19/2009, -0/+0So... how do you turn?
- Shinku3, on 10/17/2009, -1/+1To cancel, press "B".
To Switch equipment, press "1"
To pause, press "2"
To continue, press "A".
These are simple things that may encumber natal a LITTLE bit. - Shinku3, on 10/17/2009, -1/+1WOW. I don't think they will do well at all. Sony had an attitude like microsoft does now. "Oh people will just buy our systems". But then again--- let's see.
On another topic, I'm waiting for an awesome RPG that links the motion controller wiimote and the balance board--- where is it? Do any of these companies care about the hardcore gamers any more?
Maybe sony will pull through---. - bulletbutter, on 10/20/2009, -1/+1hmm, well i would have to say that if they make the 360 with motion it would greatly increase gameplay experience.Imagine playing ODST with a gun shaped controller, now that would be fun. When you move it moves and when you squeeze the trigger it fires, now that would be fun. A game like ninja gaiden, a sword shaped controler and as you moved the sword the ninja is holding would move. I say it would be a good idea to make the 360 like the wii
