- Miamisun, on 07/14/2008, -3/+243 Stories down on the same front page is the same story. WOW. WTG digg.
- Scrunion, on 07/14/2008, -1/+18probably not any time soon.. http://digg.com/playstation/Sony_No_plan_to_cut_Pl ...
what gets me is that here in Aus, the 40G model is around $700 - noting that the $AU is nearly at parity with the $US - what's with that? - diadem2, on 07/14/2008, -9/+25Good move, but if they don't start releasing a blueray drive, there will be a continued spike in PS3 sales and as a result the sales of 360 games may decline.
The reason for this is that existing 360 owners may want a blueray drive and see the ps3 as a good deal. The results of this action are obvious and not good for microsoft. - supersickie, on 07/14/2008, -2/+15Overblown? Not from what everyone else on here is saying. Bottom line is that it's a problem of note and Microsoft has yet to work it out. As far as I can tell it seems to be affecting at least some consoles even after nearly three years on the market. Unacceptable.
- staticneuron, on 07/14/2008, -2/+15Overblown? I don't think so. Everyone I know.. and their friends have had RROD at least once. I was the last one standing..... until I was on the 10th level of NG2. Tried a quick fix....... it worked for a while then it went out on me while during the intro of bad company.
For MS to extend their warranty's for 3 years.... thats a CYA policy. The issue is large and your deluded to think it is not. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/14/2008, -1/+12A ~33% failure rate with projected eventual 100% failure rate is NOT overblown. That is massive. I know three people who own a 360, and one of them RRoD just before last Christmas. One of the other ones has the giant aftermarket intercooler on the back of it, and still groans and whines during GoW sessions. The third constantly has its fan blasting away at 100%.
This is no small issue. When I'm paying $300 or $400 for a game system I expect it to break when I break it or else YEARS down the road. I still play my first and only PS2 which was a pre-ordered launch system. It only recently started having trouble reading CDs, but DVDs still work like the day I bought it. This is after 7-years of consistent use and being dragged with me all over the place.
And yet, after having years to fix the problem, Microsoft continues to churn out faulty systems by the thousands. It's insane. I don't make enough money to throw it away on something likely to break within the first year I own it. - gremlinchief, on 07/14/2008, -0/+10349 - 299 = 50
mathz ftw - evilrevolution, on 07/14/2008, -2/+11After saving for weeks I purchased an xbox 360 2 days ago along with a copy of gta4 so i could finally play it. About an hour ago I slightly knocked the console while it was on (by accident) and it scratched my gta4 disk, rendering it unplayable. I don't think i have ever been this sad in my life.
Its a common problem so some advice to prospective buyers - put it on something stable and don't go near it while its on. Its probably in one of the 3 booklets i got with it or on one of the countless warning labels but seriously who takes the time to read when you have just purchased a new console and a great game? - mthd, on 07/13/2008, -6/+15wow the recommendation engine actually worked for once, dugg
- dsmx, on 07/14/2008, -3/+11Not sure why they are droping the price the negative PR surrounding the xbox 360 is what is losing it sales. Announcing that no more consoles will RRod would increase sales far more than any price drop.
- techmaster, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8Actually they put a big bright sticker over the drive that says "WARNING! DO NOT MOVE THIS CONSOLE WHILE IT IS ON, IT WILL SCRATCH YOUR DISC!" and you have to peel the sticker off the drive before you can even put a disc in the console.
- cawpin, on 07/14/2008, -1/+9Except that it recommended a dupe of something that's already on the front page.
- elvenseven, on 07/14/2008, -2/+9A simple search and you'll find Falcon owners getting RRoD too.
- madgamer7, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7I really hope they launch it with some sort of new color, and I want freaking build-in WIFI! I refuse to pay $100 for a $20 Wi-Fi adapter (again). I guess we will find out in 4 hours time
- ociris, on 07/14/2008, -2/+9we do not care
- Sethbacca, on 07/14/2008, -5/+12Hope they are continuing to improve reliability with these things. I have a newer model X360 (Falcon chipset I think), and it RRoD for the first time last week. The worst part is I got Mass Effect in the mail the day after it died, so I'm sitting here staring at a game I've been wanting to play, but now can't for 3 to 4 weeks. The positive side, is it makes it so much easier to choose which system I am buying Soul Caliber 4 for, looks like a playable Darth Vader in my future :)
- benstudley, on 07/14/2008, -2/+8The 2nd article about this on the FP within an hour?
- Sethbacca, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6My Falcon based Xbox died just last week, it was from the first run of Falcon systems though.
- bejayel, on 07/14/2008, -5/+9ummm, no. a few months back (more like half a year or something), they reported at least breaking even selling at that price. By this point they are probably making money on each unit
- supersickie, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4Correct me if I'm wrong, but do you want a PS3 - with the capability to upgrade the HDD of course - that can play 360 games?
- libertao, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4Many people have laptops...
- Sethbacca, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3It says Falcon right on my 360 box and was from the right lot number :P
- LordHelmet, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3I would imagine that they are going to phase out either the 20gb version or the Arcade version. There's too many sku's.
- lcmatt, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4The disk is spinning at high speed so obviously you don't try and move it. Common sense is a great thing.
- bejayel, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Too bad for microsoft that this should have been the price point the whole time. The 299 model isnt even worth it for the casual gamer. you are basically forced to move up to the 60 gig model.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3The problem is that people Shout their submission to 100 people, getting them a ton more Diggs by playing the system.
MakiMaki, why do you have your shouts hidden?
Ever wonder why the same few guys get most of the front page stories and your submission that got posted first never got Dugg at all. They only have a few minutes to be seen unless they get a bunch of Diggs right away to make it noticeable and show on the upcoming chart on the right.
Digg either needs to fix this somehow, or you better learn to play along. - mywhitenoise, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3He said get a PS3 and Wii to top it off. GTA4 is on PS3, and you know Gears 2 will be on PC within a year.
- byronm, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3I'm on a hunch MS is waiting for DVD 3x.. its a standard that is being acceptable (as i type) that creates a format for burning & storage of 720p content on standard DVD5 and DVD9 disks that would mostly be like back-porting the codecs & support to the existing storage layer. The philosophy being the market can already encode hidef content to file sizes that fit the medium so we could go 720p hd without re-tooling an already established fabrication market for sd-dvd.. a more natural progression
- rohanch, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Did you miss the warning sticker that was stuck over the drive?
http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/xbox360/samsung-dvd ... - Sethbacca, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Just going based on what I was quoted by customer service.
- tomz17, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Everyone I know that has had a first gen system (including myself), has had an RROD at least once (I'm on my third replacement right now).. The revised systems are much better, but STILL suffer from RROD from what i've read.
If you need proof of the failure rate, look at the billion dollars microsoft budgeted for the 3 year RROD warranty extension program. - Ilyanep, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Why are there two articles about this on the front page at the same time?
- dcmxc, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2its 400 dollars yes, but it also has wireless internet. Add wireless internet to your 360, and your 50 bucks past the ps3, so its not a bad deal. Plus you can buy any laptop hard drive and upgrade the ps3's.
- bmdt2000, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2I would say number two is more accurate. It wouldn't make sense to put one in at this point of the game. You can bet that the next Xbox will have Blu-Ray and motion controls (although I don't think they should do the latter).
- MasterGrief, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Good luck, buddy.
- santasing, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2I got it just coz I have been wanting to for a while. Its all those trailers that make a game look good and all, but when you actually play it, its just not there.
I prefer to get games for my PS3 in case of multi-0platform as some of my friends have had to wait quite a bit to get their 360's fixed, and I don't want to be in the same position.
I am not too excited about Gears 2, but maybe they have fixed the story, the roadie run problems etc. in which case, it could be a good game. I am most excited for Fable 2, so let's see what E3 brings. Its not too long now. - elvenseven, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3Welcome to 2008.
- byronm, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3MS May not be releasing a Blu-Ray drive mostly because there is an upcoming certification of "DVD 3X" Basically its allowing h264/VC-1 encoded material on a standard dvd9 drive and creating a certification layer for 720p material on standard laser disks/dvd disks.
So in essence a software upgrade on the xbox 360 would recognize the material on the dvd9 (or 5 if you so desire) and allow playback. HD DVD drives would also be able to play this media and any new device that is consumer ready would work. Basically no manufacturing changes to the DVD publishing side to support HD resolution on standard DVD disks.
No new laser/changes - just back-porting the new codecs to the standard dvd format/laser and creating a certified label for supporting players - hardware & software combined.
Just think, all those HD DVD drives would be upgradable via firmware to play this, new drives could work and any software solution such as PC's, XBOX 360 or even PS3 could play it as well. 720p for the masses for the same development price as SD_DVD - elvenseven, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Yes like small sponge padding found on most disc drives.
- ChinezePanda, on 07/14/2008, -2/+3Ive sent mine back at lweast 3 times since I got it. The recent replacement is a Falcon...
And I am hearing these are even failing... This thing runs damn near quiet and cool as hell.. And it's failing!!?!?!?!?!
For a piece of hardwar that is so unreliable... I'd expect it to go down to 199... without the built in wifi... a next generation media format, and with the HDD's still at the outrageous price they are at... the 360 is looking to be a very very very dated machine.
A price drop does not surprise me... nor should it be considered news.. the thing is going on 3 years old for christs sake. - fani, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Rumdizzled - yes, I prefer wired too, but when small devices like the iPhone, PSP can do wireless, there's no reason Xbox360 should have omitted it. And others in this thread have valid points as well.
- spacebuddy, on 07/14/2008, -2/+3Xbox is very flaky, I will wait when it is $89.00 before I buy one.
- Table16, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Oh wow, take it easy. I'm just saying, Blu-Ray is expensive. And yes, MS does make hardware, what do you call the 360? It seems like an MS move to compete with almost any market related to technology.
- MasterGrief, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Game companies hate your country. Don't ask me why.
- fani, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Remember that externals are also generally faster ( more rpms ) but apart from that - I think its just mktg ploys to extract more money. They should be close in price.
- pcpimpster, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I hope you know what you are talking about because the wood I got from your comment should not be in vain/vein.
- BearinG, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1If only they kept the backwards compatiblity .. Didn't understand that decision..
- MasterGrief, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I can point out something obvious and add LOL on the end too, but you know why I don't?
Because it makes you look stupid. - BearinG, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1But 360 owners are already owners of the 360.. like you mentioned, some will find the ps3 a good deal if they want a blu-ray player (like me), but it doesn't mean that I have stopped playing my 360.. unless you mean people that might sell their 360 to buy a ps3 instead?
- mattyice11, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2Why exactly did you buy it? If you wanted Fable 2 or Gears 2 you could have waited and maybe gotten a deal later on.
Anyway, Bioshock is half the price for 360 as it will be on PS3. While GTA is the better overall game, Crackdown is much better for sandbox types who like causing lots of mayhem - definitely worth a purchase if you're into that type of game. Dead Rising had a ton of fans, though I never tried it due to the terrible save system. The arcade is packed with great games as well - this is probably MS' biggest advantage over Sony. Bomberman Live, Worms, Pacman CE, N+, Uno, Roogoo, Rez and Ikargua are all excellent titles and there are plenty of other great ones too.
Of course, most 3rd party games on PS3 that you haven't played yet are available on 360 and are better on the 360 more often than not. -
