- gronne, on 11/11/2007, -1/+54Forget the kids, I need this. The Orange Box is starting to affect my marriage.
- estvir, on 11/11/2007, -4/+20They are continuing to focus on 'hardcore' gamers.. is it really that baffling that they could, you know, target more than 1 gamer type?
- LordSeth, on 11/11/2007, -9/+25I think it would be more family friendly if it didn't sound like a jet engine.
Family Member: "Whats that noise?" "Is it broken?" "Is it supposed to be that loud?" "Im deaf and even I can hear that"
Dont get me wrong I love the XBox but I just wish it wasnt louder than the TV. - deadbaby, on 11/11/2007, -4/+19This is actually a really good idea. Most people my age subscribe to the "video games are the best thing ever, they can do no harm" mentality but I've seen otherwise. Parents should definitely be setting limits on how many hours their kids can waste on a video game when there are so many more important things in life.
- yomamaisfat, on 11/11/2007, -2/+17It's already pretty family friendly. I hear 12 year old kids talking to their parents while playing on Live all the time.
- teaBagger, on 11/11/2007, -0/+11dude, you should get her to see a doctor...
they have a lotion for orange box and she will be good as new in no time... - tyywebb, on 11/11/2007, -1/+11Like digg?
- Edrick, on 11/11/2007, -2/+12That's because videogames DON'T do harm. Bad parenting and lack of self-control, however, do.
- getrealnow, on 11/11/2007, -8/+17I blame Bush.
- JStandUP, on 11/11/2007, -9/+18Microsoft should continue to focus on its core customer...the hardcore gamer! the wii has a stranglehold on the family-friendly market....its price point isn't the only reason it isn't a family favorite....
- Hypermarkalan, on 11/11/2007, -1/+9Hey, don't judge the playing habits of others, alright? If I want to lash my Xbox to my back with bungie cords like a pack-mule and play games while running on the treadmill, then that's my right, dammit! Microsoft should have manufactured the Xbox to accommodate me!
Leaving the Xbox stationary while playing games? Only pussies do that. - HappyScrappy, on 11/11/2007, -1/+9It sounds more like a helicopter.
- MalDON, on 11/10/2007, -0/+8NO, there are plenty of family friendly games. Sam And Max for example. My little brother loves them!
- jeffcj7, on 11/11/2007, -2/+8I have never understood this, why the hell would you move it when it's playing?
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -4/+10Here's a way how to make the Xbox more family friendly in one easy step.
If your balls haven't dropped or you're not mature enough to be on X-Box live, you're not playing on Xbox.
This means anyone or everyone who screams 'You *censored*' or some varience of that, in a high pitched twelve year old voice, should be banned from Xbox Live.
--
Not to go completely off topic, but this is why Nintendo's friend codes are a good idea, you can only play with the people you want to play with and you don't have to put up with third graders screaming in your ears. - HappyScrappy, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7What? I am not a huge fan of the buttwipes that seem to populate Live. But it is trivial to ensure you only play with your friends on Live. There's no need to go to difficult to memorize 16-digit codes just to make it possible to play with your friends.
- SnuKs, on 11/11/2007, -0/+5Awww... no more late night high pitched bitching on Halo 3 for you?
- YuriSakazaki, on 11/09/2007, -2/+7If you're concerned about that and letting your kids do said things, then you suck as a parent. 360 has full rating-based parental controls and live is completely optional.
- DavidGX, on 11/12/2007, -2/+6Don't even try to insinuate that the Wii online setup holds a CANDLE to Xbox Live. I own both systems and it's not even close.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/10/2007, -3/+7What? I agree.
I mean, I tried.
I asked my father to try his hand at Portal. Went over the controls, how to hold the controller, etc. Even with my guidance the entire time it took him about half an hour to finish the first level, he gave up after the second level, he just coulden't grasp how to control it.
I can't imagine it being much easier for other parents, most don't care at all about game systems or what they can do, its just a kids toy in their eyes, meaning most will not know or even care to find out about any parental controls. - MalDON, on 11/11/2007, -0/+4This is a great idea. Maybe now I can actually get to play some damn games. My little siblings hog the damn thing.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/11/2007, -0/+4Exactly what I was thinking, most parents would not know how to use this thing or that it even exsists.
Its not like the child is going to tell them. - EvaMonkey01, on 11/13/2007, -3/+7The entirety of Digg's thought process in 4 posts.
- HBNDonut, on 11/09/2007, -1/+5Not really, The majority of Xbox360 owners don't have Live. But online gaming is really awesome when it's done right.
- JammoBlammo, on 11/11/2007, -1/+5I drew my gf into playing XBOX by getting her Viva Pinata. She's still not an addict though :(
- DavidGX, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4It's called a PASS CODE.
- MalDON, on 11/09/2007, -3/+6... wow.
- HBNDonut, on 11/11/2007, -1/+4Yep... next thing you know, theyll bring out a half assed motion sensing controller.
- macromarship, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4Why?
- HBNDonut, on 11/10/2007, -3/+6While I can see where you're coming from... With games these days, the control scheme is part of the experience. For the controls to be simpler, the games would need to be simpler also.
Ive made my way from NES to xbox 360 over the years and I feel very comfortable playing new games... it just takes me a second or 2 to figure out what each button does, then away I go. - inactive, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3 prjman...MICROSOFT doesn't get it? They allow people the CHOICE. Nintendo doesn't. And Microsoft is the one that doesnt get it? Choice is bad?
- HBNDonut, on 11/11/2007, -0/+3When you have video games, you don't need a life.
- cultist667, on 11/11/2007, -1/+4The family fun will start when the red ring of death appears and the family event of smashing it to pieces in the front yard begins.
- davidlitts, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2lol
- Snuff99, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2That what I was trying to say and I got dugg down. I'm just saying that the controller is too complex for most older folks to even attempt to deal with it. My folks (early 50's) will play the Wii because with some games you only need 1 or 2 buttons. They would never even attempt to play my PS2 or N64 back in the day. K.I.S.S = Keep It Simple Stupid.
- xooco, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Where are all the "hardcore gamers" that own an Xbox360 and that were trashing the Wii for being kiddy and a sell-out now?
- Shanobi, on 11/14/2007, -3/+5Isn't Live the major selling point of the 360's core library?
- xino, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Right. Maybe other services should start doing that such as all the IM networks, digg, Myspace, Xbox Live. Imagine if digg had that.
- McTim, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3Agreed, but not something that can be introduced by a software update.
- Elric1977, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3I'm 30 and I agree to an extent. I have been able to adapt, but some of my friends growing up stopped at N64 and PS. Because the controls when they tried out GC PS2 and XB were "too much". But all that abandoned have come back because of the Wii.
But back on Topic, Parental Controls have been there for a couple generations, and like the previous ones, this one will be totally ignored by 99% of parents. - Microdot, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2im no fan of microsoft... be it their operating systems, game consoles, software, or other. but this is a nice feature. they thought this one through, and accomplished it. although its fairly menial... its still something all consoles should have.
- HBNDonut, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1I, (and millions of others) have my fingers crossed for private chat channels which allow more than 2 people to join.a conversation. Its retarded, every update we hope for it, but it doesnt happen.
- simpledesign, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1if its easy for a parent to change the setting, what makes them think its not easy for a child to change it back?
- graemee, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Somehow I get the feeling that that's all the feature(s) that the Fall update will add.
- HBNDonut, on 11/11/2007, -5/+6Ewww.... video games on a computer? Like at a desk? Ouch.
- inspireology, on 11/10/2007, -3/+4I have to agree with this. I am only 26 and playing many of these next gen games just is not fun, due to the amount of effort it takes to adapt to the control schemes. So many buttons, dual analogues etc... I can get by, but the control scheme takes away from the experience.
- NathanielJ, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1This just in: Microsoft realized that Nintendo is swimming in money this generation and decided that they'd like to ditch their core demographic so that they, too, can sleep on a bed of $20 bills.
- HBNDonut, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1People need to stop being so sensitive. If someone is trash talking to you on Xbox Live then mute them, or have fun kicking their ass at whatever game you're playing.
- ubergeek09, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1You can get monitors that run at much higher resolutions than even the best HDTVs.
- ndiderrich, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1it still won't stop the 8 year old trash talkers who bug the hell out of me.
