- droidiac, on 10/10/2007, -4/+34I sent my 360 in for repairs and they sent me a DIFFERENT 360 back that was obviously used, and it STILL didn't work, they promised to send me a completely new one next time I should be getting it soon hopefully it will work this time!
- gamer31, on 10/10/2007, -8/+34commenting on these kind of stories is pretty much diggdownicide. Just bury it so the xbox fanboys don't get mad and have to start making excuses.
- Juncti, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28I'm still always amazed that no one seems to hold Microsoft accountable for what they have done with this generation of console. They rushed a defective console to market and initially charged their loyal first adopters to repair their defects. All the while using this early launch to boost their numbers and essentially steal numerous game exclusives. Developers flock to this defective system because their install base is so high, well no ***** it's higher, it's been out a year longer. A year from now PS3 will probably be at current 360 install base, but 360 will also have another year of sales. There's only so many consoles to buy.
The Wii was an enigma of console sales and still is. So I don't compare Wii numbers to 360 and PS3. PS3 will likely always lag behind because of the head start to the 360. But at what cost did this headstart come? The cost of consumer confidence?
It's absolute BS that any company can do this in this day and age. Especially with the internet and sites like Digg calling companies on every misstep they make. Yet despite continued reports of problems, people continue to flock to 360. If I'm not mistaken, the 360 in this story was replaced with a very recent build. So there is no excuse.
This seems like Windows all over again. Despite the flaws, just push it out so far and so hard that you can't really go without it. Even though there are alternatives, they become too much of a hassle to deal with, forcing the majority into complacency with their sub par and flawed products. - andru, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28Yeah, but this thing was manufactured two weeks ago - this RROD problem should have been obliterated by now. 21 months after a freaking console launch and still all these problems? WTF?
- Croaton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24One major problem is that people seem to take a stand and choose a "side" in some imagianary "console wars" between Xbox360, PS3 and Wii... this seems to have resulted in some feakish kind of newfound loyalty for their own console.
Xbox360 fans won't lash out at Microsoft for the RROD. They'll just accept it's flawed design as some kind of added feature making the gaming more exiting.
Because they luves their Xbox.
PS3 fans won't lash out at Sony for their lack of planning and support for third party game developers. They'll just patiently wait by their powered down consoles feverishly defending their investment to anyone who happens to come by.
Because they luves their PS3.
Wii fans won't lash out at Nintendo for their obvious strategy of flooding their gameportfolio with old ports and badly done remakes or for acctually only refurbish existing old technology and selling it as new and inovative. They'll just flail their arms at their tv's and try to pretend that Wii-sports or Zelda still is fun.
Because they luves their Wii.
In the end... they are all the console makers wet dream... and the consumers worst nightmare... - Zamfir, on 10/10/2007, -11/+28That's just fantastic!
- compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17seriously if people are paying $300-500 for a gaming console and it's being replaced at this high of a rate I smell a class action coming on soon. I'm not litigious by nature but this reeks of a product that was poorly executed and they know about the problems so they have people repeatedly send them in. why not just issue a recall of all of them manufactured before a certain date then send out consoles that are manufactured new that don't have this problem? seems like a logical thing to do. the consoles are still under warranty and obviously the temp fix isn't working. I'll be highly surprised if there isn't some sort of suit soon about this cause honestly it's getting to be too much. II've been wanting to buy a 360 since they came out but then after seeing the RROD I'm hestitant to do so as I'm not going to drop that kind of cash knowing that the console has a high failure rate. I'm sorry MS but until you put out a version of the 360 that is proven free from this defect I'm afraid my summer cash is tilting towards getting a Wii and another PSP (already owned 2 and sold them causeI got bored but with homebrew firmware and emulators I want another).
- patch6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14They added a bigger GPU heatsink and an HDMI port. The x-clamp design flaw still exists.
- themastersb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16The red ring is just a feature.
- geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13you know, I was thinking that owning an xbox 360 can't be that bad and that most people were throwing this all out of proportion until I read your serious comment.
- Kigurumix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I sent my 360 in for repair in the beginning of June and it took over 1 week just to get the stupid box to send it back in. I got it back the end of June and was to afraid to use it so it just sat for around a month. When I finally decided to hook it up to my new TV it died in less than a week, probably not more than 3 or 4 hours of play time on it.
I sent it in for repair again on the 16th and they received it on the 21st. The first time they only had it for a day or two and this time they have had it for almost 2 weeks. I called and they said this was within industry standards for a repair, I said not for Nintendo, I said I would have had a replacement sent out within a week and then would have to send my my system back.
When I set up the repair the agent said I would have my system or a replacement quickly but this is not the case. I talked to a supervisor and he asked if I had used an inter cooler with my 360 or had it plugged into a surge protector because that is probably what caused the problem, I said nope. I asked him to please help me get my system back faster because it was unacceptable that the repaired system died so quickly and he assured me that my repair or replacement would probably be on its way before he would be able to contact the repair center. Haven't they ever heard of a phone?
My repair still sits at the repair center and the status on their web site states "Device Received at Service Center", who knows when it will be on it's way back. I don't trust Microsoft to fix it now, you would think they would at least return working systems.
If the one I get back doesn't arrive in like new condition I will be angry because the one I sent them was in pristine condition. - patch6, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Buy a broken one, have it professionally reballed (with lead/tin 63/37 solder, none of that RoHS compliant junk), do the x-clamp replacement, maybe use a few ram heatsinks, do the "shroud mod", add another fan, and you'll have a 360 that will not fail. The modifications in total will run about $100, and a broken 360 is around the same price, so it's not a bad deal. Stock 360s are guaranteed to fail without those modifications.
The laser head might go if you have a lot of dirty disks, but replacement heads are kinda cheap on ebay. - foofoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10This is what holds me back from getting a 360. I want one but it seems like it's a crap shoot...
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11perhaps you should try Viagra...
- xZel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10kinda ironic, mine just 3-ringed 5 minutes ago. I get call Microsoft and get my third xbox now. Awesome...
- snowrider221, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Although this IS an issue that should be addressed... This happens to hundreds of people. I know someone who's received 8 replacement consoles; whats so special about this situation that it is posted to the front page of digg.
- animebling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I'm always saddened when I hear about the Xbox having so many hardware issues. I really wanted to get one and waited 6 months hoping they would fix the issues. They never fixed it so I bought a PS3, it's just to bad it's taking them so damn long to fix the hardware issues.
- blankoboy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Simple solution....turf that turd hardware and purchase a PS3 or Wii for quality. Fanboy or not the failure numbers don't lie.
- piper999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Microhard describes your penis in a state of arousal.
- philhatesyou, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15You have my sympathy here, but this sort of thing is to be expected. This is what happens when you buy something that says "Microsoft" on the box.
- gmprunner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It makes sense, but the comedic value of it is up for debate. Not a bad effort, though.
- dkoon, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15Sorry Jawsh91, digg is only for dissing Microsoft. We don't care about what's your bad experience with other companies, just say something bad about Microsoft and we will believe you. BTW you can just make something up, we don't need the facts or the truth if it makes Microsoft looks bad.
- MrSteamTank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What are you talking about? Tons of comments here are getting dugg up for insulting the 360. If their is any companies you can't say anything negative about it's Nintendo and Apple.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Nothing anecdotal about this:
http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUST3254720070705?src=070507_1651_DOUBLEFEATURE_surrender_offer
- Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday said it would take a more than $1 billion charge to fix "an unacceptable number of repairs" to its Xbox 360 video game consoles and had missed shipment targets for the end of June.
Feel free to keep denying this was a problem though :p - Jibberwalk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That was my first thought when I read his comment too, except I was going to go with: "Microhard is already trademarked by your penis."
- crushfan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9LOL, Microsoft.
- deathbyspatula, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6My first xbox 360 had the AV jack on the back die. I just received my replacement today. I had a wonderful afternoon of Halo 2 and earlier, I even rented Bioshock. Then, this new 360 they sent me died, less than 10 hours after I had received it. This is after about 4 to 6 hours of off and on play. This one they sent me looked brand new, still had stickers and that new console smell.
This replacement console had Red Ringed on me, and after I paid $99 for them to repair my original, they send me a replacement that ***** dies.
I'm calling tomorrow and demanding a ***** refund.... and a new xbox. I'm hoping to bargain my way up to a 360 elite :) - SenorCardgage74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Your Down's Syndrome isnt as charming as the judges at the Special Olympics have lead you to believe.
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The PS2had the "disk read error" that affected 1/3 of the systems at launch. They fixed the problem a year later because of a class action lawsuit.
- patch6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you're not playing on an HDTV, the system generates less heat due to the fewer graphical resources needed. The more heat generated, the faster the system will fail, so those using 1080P graphics will usually develop problems fastest.
- nattybohman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They sent me a used 360 after one of the repairs. It was so bad that it had a loose piece rolling around inside (not the spring sound) and the previous owner had drawn on the case with a yellow highlighter.
I was able to send it back to them because of the loose piece floating around inside, they said they wouldn't have taken it back for just the highlighter drawing.
If I paid $400 for a system, I don't want it replaced with a dirty one that's been drawn on with a yellow highlighter! Give me a break Microsoft! - Shawn4168, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Nintendo's US-based customer service is outstanding.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Sorry but that 's just plain Pwned! I hope a year's worth of Xbox live was given at least
- LaughingDjinn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dugg for the term "diggdownicide"
- andru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Uh - we just put up images of the back of the console, clearly showing the manufacturers date. Stop being an idiot.
- nattybohman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I collect systems and always keep everything in perfect condition. I always have mine in a well ventilated area, yet I'm still on #5.
- nattybohman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Could you link to some backup on this? Just curious since I've never heard that before and I read about this stuff quite a bit.
Not that it matters to me, I was smart and bought it at costco. Unfortunately, I forgot about their return policy until I was on 360 #4. I'm all set now though. I got number 5 replaced with a new one immediately thanks to them.
I LOVE Costco. - andru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How long did it take to send and receive the new console?
- Tryleph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe a SP fix it... Its works well with their OSes...
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I like all 3 of my consoles, thank you.
But I had a 360 from day 1. And when it was as old as the PS3 is now (under a year), there weren't many games for it either. I didn't turn my 360 on for 4 months after I finished PGR3 in December 2005 and when GRAW came out in April 2006.
All in all I find your comment just an attempt to stroke your own ego. Not only are you above all this, you have it all figured out too. - jull1234, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well, that's just not the case. I think that they made an announcement that they would make more of an effort to return your original console, but who the hell knows what they mean by that. I personally recieved a 'new' refurb last time I sent in my console (because it was scratching my games while sitting still) just a couple of weeks ago.
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Those cooling fans "void" the warranty of the 360. If Microsoft somehow found out you used one of them (most likely if you told them), they'll make you pay for repairs.
- DrCheese, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The GPU of the new 65mm systems are still 90mm based. Given that the majority of problems relate to the GPU I wouldn't pin a lot of hope on it
- BM5k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Mine died after almost 1 year. Took me a week to get the box. Its only been a couple days since I sent it in. I hope I get it back fast, but I'd rather wait 3 weeks and get one that worked than get another ***** one quickly.
- nattybohman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not everyone, but if everyone knows someone with a dead one (I've had 4 die and know 3 people that have had theirs die) this IS a big deal.
- Mukelo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I see a lot of people saying this, "mine works, maybe you're doing something stupid". C'mon, there thousands, if not tens of thousands red ringed boxes out there and MS wouldn't extent a warranty for nothing. I had my Xbox in a very ventilated space, played like a maximum of 1 hour a day. It lasted 7 months.
- patch6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That "loose piece" is a component that contains a ball bearing which can tell the operating system whether the console is vertical or horizontal.
- nattybohman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5While I agree the PS3 and Wii are more reliable, (I have owned all three since launch) I rarely play either of them. The PS3 doesn't have the games yet and doesn't look like it will this year as all of the new big titles are getting mediocre or poor reviews. Also, it's online component is a joke when you're used to live. I'm putting a lot of hope in Unreal Tournament 3 to bring it out of the slump.
As far as the Wii goes, I have an absolute BLAST with it when friends come over, otherwise it just sits there. Even Zelda hasn't been able to hold my attention.
If the 360s would just work consistently, they'd blow the others away. Microsoft are really squandering a great opportunity here. - Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but the key word there is "FIXED." We're past a year now with the 360 and they haven't done anything to effectively correct the problem.
Maybe a lawsuit would get them moving. - gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sorry but I am not going to start a protest when my 360 hasn't given me any real problems. I hear reports of problems with the 360 but for all I know many are from Fan Boys for the other systems spreading FUD. Sorry but my friends haven't had problems I haven't had problems, why should I throw a fit over something that hasn't happened to me. If MS ever screws me over I will be all over them, but I have had a very good experience with them.
Same goes for my PS3 and my Wii. -
