Microsoft Donates Xbox 360 Kiosks to Children's Hospital
kotaku.com — Microsoft is teaming with the Companions in Courage Foundation to deliver Xbox 360 kiosks to children's hospitals across the country, the company announced today. Each kiosk will include an Xbox 360 packed with select games, movies, television content and access to a private network that allows hospitalized children to play games and chat.

- pmctosh, on 05/07/2008, -7/+95Good on ya Microsoft. If any one needs cheering up it's kids in these environments. Every little bit counts and I think this counts for much.
- bratterscain, on 05/07/2008, -22/+7Why encourage it or why discourage it? MS is getting it back due to PR. It's just standard business.
Standard human behavior tells us to be positive towards those that help others and that would promote them and others to keep doing the same. Not so with a business. You can rally but a business usually won't support your charity other than what their PR team decides based on what kind of returns it will bring them. A business is a business. Don't let your ***** emotions get in the way.- mediaphile, on 05/07/2008, -3/+24Don't let your ***** cynicism get in the way of realizing that the kids in that hospital don't care about that *****.
- bratterscain, on 05/07/2008, -11/+3You fail proof-reading. I didn't say what they done is right or wrong. Just making an analysis on human nature.
- tnoy, on 05/07/2008, -2/+10At the end of the day a bunch of kids are going to have some fun. Who the ***** cares if a business benefits from it, or they do it for financial gain.
A comment like yours would hold a lot more water if Gates didnt still have the company wrapped around his finger.- RyanistheRyan, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4I question Gates power, but i completely agree with you and mediaphile. Its not about the business, but about the kids. Who cares that its a win win situation? Is it only good if its a kids win and microsoft looses situation?
- bratterscain, on 05/07/2008, -10/+1Of course you don't care. Maybe learning isn't your thing. I just care about the nature of actions as pertaining to psychology and business. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Get the ***** over it people.
- Coffeedemon, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Thats the thing. You didn't say that much. I think you said that businesses should not be elevated in opinion because they operate based on profits even if those profits are not apparent at first. Whereas, individuals should be commended. What of individuals who seek to profit. Or businesses that are groups of well-minded individuals. Actually all this is moot as everyone else seems to be of the mind that the profits to the business in this case are not the issue as the more important part is that some kids will be happier for a while. Anyway thats what I got out of it... you weren't that clear.
- makkaveli19, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1damn, something implying the end justifies the means and it's dugg up. hmm

- Shissy, on 05/07/2008, -22/+10I think they should get those kids some Wii's instead. Have them play some Trauma Center right before an operation. That'll keep those kids quiet...

- rafor, on 05/07/2008, -18/+5Well, what else are they supposed to do with the refurbed Red Ring of Death boxes people refuse to get as "repairs"?
- Y0tsuya, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1So they have some extra refurbed xboxes lying around. They could try to sell them at a discount to spoiled, self-absorbed suburban teenagers, or give it away to some kids who would appreciate the gesture. Hmmm...tough choice.
- uziko, on 05/07/2008, -20/+3meanwhile kids around the world not only have no medical care but no food and no one who cares about them.....
just saying, it's true, there are kids starving and dying right now- AlexanderZero, on 05/07/2008, -1/+13If you feel so bad about it why not form your own multi-billion dollar company and donate something for them? I don't understand why you're complaining about the fact that someone is being generous to the wrong people when there so many more people not being generous at all.
- uziko, on 05/07/2008, -7/+1i don't have a billion dollars and if i did i would keep it all to myself, but if i were to donate to charity i would realize that it's dumb to give kids that are already gettting medical care and fed video games instead of feeding and giving medical care to kids that have none
- GrimPraetorian, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3It's not like Bill and Melinda Gates have created a foundation built on furthering education here in the states and providing medicines for less fortunate countries... oh wait, never mind. The Gates Foundation says hi.

I'm here complaining about what and to whom microsoft is donating. - jerrycurley, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0You are complaining about donations...and that makes you an *****.
Don't worry...you are just a kid. Hopefully you will mature.

- jordyhoyt, on 05/07/2008, -2/+8and people donate millions to them each year, meanwhile millions of sick kids spend their (last?) days in a bland, boring hospital. they could definitely use some games to cheer them up.
- tnoy, on 05/07/2008, -0/+9Lets just forget about the MILLIONS of dollars Gates is giving to the kids that are dying in 3rd-world countries.
MS gives a few grand woth of kiosks, and you suddenly turn ignorant? Get a ***** life.- uziko, on 05/07/2008, -6/+2i have a life thanks, i'm just pointing out the fact that if these xboxes were sold and that money went to feed and educate poor kids, they would get medical care and go on to live a decent life, instead of whats happening right now, which is they are starving and dying

- jerrycurley, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3So..in your world, you should never donate to ANYONE unless you can donate to EVERBODY?
- uziko, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1i'm just saying that if i had billions of dollars, i would feel pretty bad if i donated xboxes while there are starving and diseased kids that are just left on the street to die
get it? kthxbye- jerrycurley, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah...we get it.. you are a ***** idiot.
- JudgeMonkey, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't. Well, first off I'd have solid gold shoes, and a group of six armed men to guard my shoes. I'd probably be too busy with that to donate anything anywhere though... ah well, don't they say it's the thought that counts? I think my shoes are very shiny.

- mawh, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4So what? It's a step in the right direction. any help is appreciated i'm sure.
- Cenobia, on 05/07/2008, -0/+14Wtf are you talking about. Microsoft is being generous by donating stuff to sick children and you complain about how people are worse off. I guess we should just take the 360s back since your so unhappy about it. Microsoft has 360s, so they give some away. You expect them to give xbox's to starving children in Africa? Xbox's are not edible. Donate money to a real charity if you want to pretend to care. Meanwhile, get your head out of your ass.
I mean I'm all for hating Microsoft, but damn... - logan074, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5So we can only donate to the absolute worse off people in the world?
- mediaphile, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Yeah, because of course you could never donate both Xbox360s to children in America and money and supplies to other countries at the same time. That would be impossible for a multi-billion dollar corporation to do.
And while we're at it, ***** PAX and Child's Play too for bringing a little joy into so many fortunate cancer ridden people's lives.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/07/2008, -21/+2Oh, so... at least the Xbox is good for something...

- Newedge14, on 05/07/2008, -2/+5I'm sure the Xbox 360's will make the kids think less about their stay and keep them distracted. Better to not think about your injuries and focus more on inflicting the virtual pain to the other kids your staying with I suppose
- mediaphile, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Yeah, because all video games are about inflicting pain, especially E-10 games. Those are the worst.
- BoonTobias, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0they'll be playing cod and halo before you know it and they'll pwn everyone's mom too

- bigbigspoon, on 05/07/2008, -12/+1We can't even sell them anymore, hopefully we can give them away.... Giving the sick children the Red Ring of Death... Sounds disgusting
- jerrycurley, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4I seriously have to ask if you thought that your comment made you look good. I can't imagine that you possibly could have.
- dtreese, on 05/07/2008, -0/+44As a medical student aspiring to a career in pediatrics, I can assure you that these types of donations are indeed wonderful and useful. The children's hospital that my medical school is affiliated with has received similar donations of video gaming systems, and kids love them. For those who think that other, more useful things could be donated, consider that giving away manufactured product is actually pretty cheap/cost effective for a company. As for things going to people less fortunate, I understand that even the most basic health care in the US makes people more fortunate than those in other countries, but there is nothing wrong with donations inside the US. Most children's hospitals have a mix of insured and uninsured patients.
Either way, it's a pretty darn nice thing to see some normalcy returned to kids' lives when they have to live in isolation because the medicines we use to attempt to kill the cancer growing in them basically shut down their immune systems. When a child has been completely isolated from his or her family and spends most of the day dealing with physical therapy, chemo, scans, blood draws and IV changes, it's pretty cool to still have something they can do just like all the other kids. I find the chat aspect espsecially exciting, because some of the kids in isolation aren't even allowed to go use the computer rooms. I pray that none of you ever have to find out firsthand just how beneficial these types of donations can be to sick children and their families.- xmod3, on 05/07/2008, -7/+2That's nice you want to go into PEDS.
But the Xbox 360 is a totally different animal compared to other game consoles...its extremely unreliable....
....a kiosk is the worst possible enviroment for the Xbox 360....no airflow, confined space....
....Xbox 360's always overheat in kiosks....at Best Buy, at CC, at gaming conferences
not familiar with the RRoD i take it....I can almost guarentee most (over 75%) of these kiosks will break after 6 months of use
...just a cheap PR move by Microsoft....but most Diggers are monkeys....they s*ck at thinking ratioinally....so all most diggers see is sunshine and rainbows....- Coffeedemon, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1***** off. I'm sure that there will be replacements if these were to go bad. Some kids will have a happier day playing some videogames while waiting for treatments ... BUT the Xbox is unreliable!!11 wahhhhh.
Seems somewhat ironic that we'd see the most undignified of ***** whiners in an article about sick children who in many cases are probably resigned to their fates but might want some cheering up just the same. - xmod3, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1'....the most undignified of ***** whiners ...'
oh touchy, touchy xbot. go s*ck bill gates a$$hole! you fvcking monkey!

- nienhulm, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4 I agree. I worked at St. Jude's Children's Research hospital a few years back and really think that they've got the right idea for a children's hospital. Everything was completely set up and designed for kids. All the waiting rooms were basically playrooms with plenty of toys and tv's and other such things. A lot of the kids there also rode around on little trikes (with their IV poles behind them!) They may be in a hospital, but its nice when said hospital is devoted to not only treating their diseases but also to treating them emotionally. It's hard to be "just a kid" in that situation and to have any sense of normalcy is a great boon. Kudos to microsoft.
- xmod3, on 05/07/2008, -7/+2That's nice you want to go into PEDS.
- babylonian, on 05/07/2008, -17/+4First their bodies fail, then their consoles do. Tragic. :[

- nickert0n, on 05/07/2008, -4/+17Dugg, you know all you apple fan boyz I dont see mac book airs being donated? Where your Steve Robs I mean Jobs?
- alienunknown, on 05/07/2008, -2/+2Now that is just stupid. Fan boys are stupid anyway. None of these corporations, microsoft or apple .etc really give a *****. What microsoft is doing is just free advertising but if it makes the kids happy while they are sick then good for the kids.
And what a retarded comment you just said. A game console would be a lot more fun then a macbook air for kids in hospital. It's not like ms are giving the kids computers with vista on them, so what your saying is stupid.- Tishiablo, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1Microsoft makes operating systems, not full PCs...
- nickert0n, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Why is it stupid? MY POINT is that this bias of users on digg say Microsoft is soo evil and mac can do no wrong. And Im sorry but I do beleive no matter what you are donating its a good deed.
A kid in a hospital would love a computer just as much.
Im trying to contrast the asbackwards mentalites of all these *whoops I dropped the soap and im going to touch my toes mac fanatics. They lock down the hardware, they tell you what you can run thier OS on, they tie the iPhone to a carrier they dictate, they are creating a monopoly and stupid mac boy attention whores are yelling at steve jobs to push the ipod deeper in their assholes so thier eyes pop out.
Now Microsoft on the other hand has released a series of Operating systems that do not dictate on hardware, on phones, servers, thin and thick client machines and so forth and for a corporation they have been pretty lenient on thrid party software development in conjunction with technoliges.
And you have little whinny companies like Apple TAKE THEM TO COURT with Anti Trust suits and claims of Monopolization tactics because of things like bundling Internet Explorer with the OS.
Plain and simple if your a mac fan boy, then you will do fine in a society that dictates what you can and cannot do.
And for the refrence I am an Open Source supporter that runs Ubuntu 8.04, the only chance this world has, is breaking away dicatorships in all forms.

- ysss, on 05/07/2008, -0/+9This is definitely a win-win deal. A demo kiosk for the children to play with, and a marketing kiosk for MS to uh, do some marketing with..
- M3wThr33, on 05/07/2008, -7/+1Great. Now the kids will learn to cope with death.
- RyanistheRyan, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5I vote that they give them an All-Access Pass to downloadable material. There in a kiosk, so they won't buy anything anyway, so its not like they would be loosing profits.
- Tyrghast, on 05/07/2008, -4/+15My 360 got the RROD, i mailed it in, got it back in about a week and it hasn't failed since then. That was june 07. You people are fixated on a problem that has been all but eradicated, just because it involves Microsoft, one of your companies it's 'cool to hate'. Just take a hit of this, chill the ***** out, and be glad that the kids can have some entertainment.
- jo21, on 05/07/2008, -9/+4my nintendo its almost 15 year old and still works, never had a hardware issue.

- nickert0n, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Your tards, RROD are silver linings, it will give these kids a reason to hop out of thier beds and be like WTF! Then they will take a scalple open up the case and replace the X clamp.
See Microsoft did this on purpose so they can educate the youth!

- jo21, on 05/07/2008, -9/+4my nintendo its almost 15 year old and still works, never had a hardware issue.
- kolop1, on 05/07/2008, -13/+2Who will get the red rings of death first? The children or the 360?
- omnis, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5i look forward to a day when people's first thoughts aren't, "it's cool to be a doucebag."
- alienunknown, on 05/07/2008, -2/+2Wow, that's really low... Not funny at all dude...
- jacksons98, on 05/07/2008, -7/+7And your friendly Childrens Hospital will probably find a way to charge your insurance company $200 a day to play it, games extra, as are the controllers, and the nurse to bring it into your room will cost another $300....
- natertots, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1good luck finding an insurance company willing to pay that
- dafunkmonster, on 05/07/2008, -4/+2Standing game kiosks for kids in hospitals...shortsighted much?
- dudefather, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1tall chairs?
- dudefaceguyman, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3I remember being in the hospital as a kid (I have a brittle bones disease that was more severe as a kid. Not as bad anymore) and when they had the N64 kiosks delivered to rooms they were perfectly bed height. I loved it.
It's prolly the same deal with the Xbox kiosks. It's not gonna be some walmart craning your neck to see kiosk.
- TecK415, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Wow, I wish they had something like that in hospitals back when I was a kid. I got to play with ***** cardboard and crayons. Maybe if I was lucky a Lego or two. But, at least you're using your imagination
- webaddict, on 05/07/2008, -3/+1@Shissy don't Wii's require quite a bit of movement. Some of those kids probably aren't in the shape or position to be doing much moving? Besides, Nintendo would have be that generous too. :P See Microsoft isn't all bad, they just like to make money too.

I guess that isn't generous enough for your standards.- micflo, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1wow thats pretty cool

- lonehunter01, on 05/07/2008, -3/+2So that's what they're doing with all the refurbs....
- Cherubim, on 05/07/2008, -9/+2Is this the best they can do ? Why not donate millions of dollars toward something PRODUCTIVE, like medical research. If Microsoft stopped acting like thugs and actually donated the money they wasted in fighting losing court cases they might earn more respect.

You should be feeling like a jackass right about now. - dudefaceguyman, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6Hospital life is horrible for a kid. Things like this make it slightly more bearable. You'd understand if you've ever experienced it or had a child stuck in hospitals all the time.
Eventually hospital life just saps their will to live. Stuff like this actually HELPS them live longer. It's wonderful that hospitals are trying to make the surroundings more comfortable for children. Personally I think it's equally important, as this helps kids with ALL medical problems resulting in staying in hospitals for long periods of time.

- fiskintl, on 05/07/2008, -7/+2ok, I read that headline as 'Microsoft detonates Xbox 360s in hospitals'. IM GLAD THEY DIDNT. dugg.
- Stiverton, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Well, I read it like that too if it's any consolation. We can be crazy together.
- mezzor, on 05/07/2008, -9/+0Seriously, i love the idea.
But the kids will die, when they get ring of doom.
Then they will jump out of the window - xmod3, on 05/07/2008, -6/+1What happens when they break (RRoD)? Are they going to be covered by warranty?
Because Xbox 360's in kiosks are the WORST....they always overheat....at Best Buy, at CC, at gaming conferences....a kiosk is possibly the worst possible enviroment for an Xbox 360 to be in.- kmg90, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1exactly

- Betrayer, on 05/07/2008, -3/+1Are there that many 360 games for children? and how many of those are multiplayer?
Why does everyone here assume when a child goes to the hospital they die? (some children do survive.. after all it is a hospital)
and how many of these children will be getting a 360 when they get better? (brilliant Sales Strategy MS).
Kindof like Apples school program where they gave the schools cheap computers... and now who uses the MACS.. the children who grew up with apples in schools in the 80s and 90's. - Ingestre, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1AWWWW!! nice one Microsoft!
- alienunknown, on 05/07/2008, -3/+2I am sure that the motives of microsoft for doing this are far from pure but if it makes the kids happy while they are in hospital it's good :)
- HumanRecall, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1next weeks news ---multipable red rings of death cause childern to flat line, brought back from near death experiance......................... currently in M$ induced coma . doctors blames some wacky device called an .........X ?........box ?
