- snorkle256, on 12/12/2008, -2/+165.....shouldn't you ask them to send the one "they have" to you? Nothing like ganking the system.
- Scrooged, on 12/12/2008, -3/+73I can't stand them either, I guess that's why I don't have a Wii. In fact, I hate them so much I don't have a Playstation either. I admit I have a 360 though, but that's because I love Apple.
- jesusface, on 12/12/2008, -5/+64Crap like this makes me hate customer service. Stupid people don't put information into computer systems.
- Rjordan, on 12/13/2008, -2/+40I paid some 12 year old kid $25 to fix my red ringed xbox 360.... wow. Youth of today I tell you.
- PeteBeast, on 12/12/2008, -4/+42MS needs a costumer service overhaul. It's pretty much the thing that's setting them back. Sure you can argue about their OS but when put into perspective, the Customer Service card is played when MS is mentioned as a "bad" company.
- then00b, on 12/12/2008, -8/+44I blame outsourcing.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -7/+38Looks like typical big corporation at work.
- vashth3stampede, on 12/13/2008, -0/+29also - if their system claims that they have his xbox but it isn't there - isn't that a lost machine on their end? shouldn't they be replacing the "lost" system?
- Thorpe, on 12/13/2008, -1/+27Minimum wage customer service = minimum effort/don't give a ***** staff
- linksus, on 12/13/2008, -0/+21Or ask about the status of the repair and to confirm their shipping address. Then complain when it goes missing
- lmbb20, on 12/13/2008, -0/+21I had a 360 with the RRoD and I had to send mine back to Microsoft 4 times (over a 6 month period) because they didn't fix it the first 3 times. All this time I did not have a working 360. The last time they had to sign an personal "agent" to my case. He would call me at random times and give me worthless updates. I told this agent that I wanted a different 360 and when he said that he wasn't sure that could be done, I told him to get it done. My last 360 came back and has been working ever since.
- strictnein, on 12/13/2008, -6/+25You should find someone to pay you to work. See, then you'd have a job and can just buy the games you want instead of being a bottom feeder.

- loggedout, on 12/12/2008, -2/+17The servers probably had to restart before the updates went into effect.
- JBabin3xB, on 12/13/2008, -0/+14what you should have done is..
after they said they have it, hang up, wait 1 min then call back, get a different guy and ask him to ship it back to you! The computer will say they have it and they will scramble to get you one because they'll think they lost it - ErrorLoading, on 12/13/2008, -2/+15I'm pretty sure no one ever gets the same 360 they sent in back.
- N3M3515, on 12/13/2008, -5/+18i blame microsoft

so you'll have amd 4200+, 1gb memory, dvd drive, 80gb hdd, and an 8400 for $200 (I'll admit, you'd have to splurge to get nicer gfx cards, but you can also spend more than 10min searching for parts). Oh, and in case you were wondering if it played games, minimum system requirements for Left4Dead (my favorite atm, but should be a generally good marker unless you're dead-set on playing Crysis):
Supported OS: Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / Vista64
Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
Memory: 1 GB
Graphics: 128 MB, Shader model 2.0, ATI 9600, NVidia 6600 or better
Hard Drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card - lmbb20, on 12/13/2008, -1/+12The 5 times I had to call for my 360 the calls were over an hour because the customer service people didn't know what product they were dealing with or they wanted to ***** with me.
- madk, on 12/13/2008, -10/+21Actually MS has done a really great job at handling the Xbox 360 issues...outside of the fact that they are still happening. They really did step up and take care of things. Turn around time is usually are 10 days. Consumerists always likes to point out the exception and cry about it but forget about the 99% who have had great service.
- spartarising, on 12/13/2008, -1/+11I just got mine back from repair, was like a 1 day turn around not including shipping. No hassle involved, outside of having to wait for the UPS guy all day.
- Ajajadude, on 12/13/2008, -2/+12Well, I'd certainly hope not given how long the PS2 has been on the market.
- tgc1, on 12/13/2008, -1/+11Glad i'm not the only one who's realized that. Now if only the corporations and people of the world would get that. I find it amusing when people expect someone who gets paid diddly, to give a crap about their problems.
- Infowarsdotcom, on 12/13/2008, -6/+15LOL....should've built a PC then you can fix it yourself if it breaks ;)
- docbob84, on 12/13/2008, -2/+11I'll first admit I don't have a 360 so I'm sorry if this is a retarded idea for some reason (ie games are specific to a certain machine or something) but here's what I've done with several consoles up to a PS2 a couple years ago.
Go to Walmart. Buy the same model as the busted one. Pay in cash, do *not* associate your name or credit card with this transaction, including gift cards. Go home. Take any hard drives out of the busted one, if applicable. Take the same hard drives out of the new one. Switch the two. Clean up the busted one with the new hard drive as best you can. Return the busted one to Walmart. Tell them it didn't work when you tried it out. They'll give you your money back. If you act a little pissed off (going to ruin your kid's Christmas or whatever) they might give you a couple bucks on a gift card.
Unethical? Yeah, probably. But it gets the job done. Also, you don't really think Walmart is going to eat that cost do you? They're gonna return it to Microsoft as faulty and Microsoft will eat the cost. The people who should have done it in the first place. Actually even they would probably refurbish it and sell it, I'd imagine. I've never worked for Microsoft so I dunno about that, but having worked for Walmart, as long as you used cash they're likely to a) never discover what happened, and b) not be able to pursue it if they do.
The only thing I can see happening is it seems like some of the consoles had serial numbers on the outside, but I don't think they make it to your receipt. Like I said, I haven't done this since the time of the PS2. And it wouldn't be a good idea if it's registered and still under warranty; that should be your first step, the "walmart service plan" is only if the warranty is up or if they're refusing to honor it. - bigskank, on 12/13/2008, -2/+10File a suit in small claims court for the cost of your Xbox. This is very cheap to do (filing fees are about $20 in most states), and you don't need a lawyer. If you have a copy of your original receipt and warranty card, great. If not, get something from microsoft confirming your xbox is still under warranty. You can likely serve process on them by registered mail. Odds are they'll either quickly jump to fix it, or you have an easy money judgment against them.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 12/13/2008, -0/+8That's not a tutorial. It's a product.
- ErrorLoading, on 12/13/2008, -0/+8Yeah, I've noticed UPS likes to deliver residential packages at the end of the day. And mine must always be the last box.
- Sabin, on 12/13/2008, -3/+11That's because they do proper product testing before releasing something to market. RROD cases are reported to be down to 10-15% on current 360s which is still bloody ***** ridiculous.
- ryansimbalist, on 12/13/2008, -4/+12Disc Read Error?
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9What are you 12?
- articroll, on 12/13/2008, -2/+10double edged sword, on one hand microsoft rushed to market with the 360 and didn't do enough hardware quality control, yet they have managed to increase their share of the market this gen. 360 has become the ps2 of this gen but not in the way microsoft had hoped.
- thunderbeard13, on 12/13/2008, -7/+15That doesn't make a hill o' beans sense...I love it.
- frygar, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7I had a similar experience - once I got my 360 back, however, I gave it to my sister and her husband for Christmas with all the games, promptly bought a PS3.
I haven't looked back since. - SnoopE89, on 12/13/2008, -3/+10@thunderbeard13
I think it was to poke fun at the logic of AdamaObama where he said he hates Microsoft and that's why he doesn't have a WiI( Nintendo) because of it, or you probably already got that and then this is to explain to the future masses! - hangingspider, on 12/13/2008, -1/+8UPS is making a killing off the RROD!
- LupeFiasco, on 12/13/2008, -6/+13Sigh.... you Xbox fanboys still miss the point, and that is, you should not even have to send back your system in the first place. I swear, almost any other product would have gotten boycotted by now, but fanboyism is far from logical.
- czeus, on 12/13/2008, -2/+9I had a similar experience with their call centers...
Our XBox got the red ring at about 6 months from purchase. We were just going to leave it because we heard of all the horror stories, but at 9 months from purchase, we decided to at least try. (This is still within the 1 year warranty).
We call up the help center and they say that they can't do anything about it. We were baffled ... isn't this what the help center is for?
So we called back a few weeks later. We received a simple response that because it was the 4-part red ring they wouldn't fix it ... if it was the 3-part red ring they could.
It took four calls and an attempt to return it to Walmart (from which it was bought) but by this time, it was past the 1-year warranty ... the next call we made, all they said was that it was past the 1-year. We tried explaining it to them that they had been running us on a wild goose trail, but they had the same response.
We casually went outside, smashed the broken piece of hardware, and sold all the games to a retailer, and went and bought a Playstation 3. I will never look back. - Murdats, on 12/13/2008, -5/+11find me any company that doesn't have a large amount of complaints about their customer service
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -2/+8Both of those stories are on the front page, *****.
And as was pointed out about that ***** moronic CNN story, 1 month doesn't decide an entire ***** war, you fantroll. Especially since PS3 outsold 360 the first half of the year. - dexim, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7Yes, we can tell that you don't have a clue.
- SolitarySoviet, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6@frygar
thats *****...
-first xbox had internal Power supply issues one of which was the solder points where the power cable would break but not detach completely thus turning into a little arc welder and being a huge fire hazzard... their solution? send new power cables to EVERYONE who bought an early system with the problem that had a HUGE brick end on it with a test reset button like a GFCI plug does
that way when it fizzles it would just trigger the braker and its safe,
PS2- dvd drive was ***** utter *****, I had 3 ps2s my friend got up to 5 before the new gen stuff was close to comming out. Im sure you or someone else you know has similar stats, what did sony do to fix that? nothing untill WAY later when they came out with the ps2 slim, even then that drive was ***** and died too.
N64- Controlers analog stick was made of soft plastic and turned into white powder after just a short amout of use making the stick "slutty" (loose)
NES- cartrage contacts in system lost spring tension due to the way the cartrage loading system was designed (instead of a socket like snes, n64, genesis, etc.. it had to be put in then clicked down to put pressure against the contacts)
NDS- origninal ds shoulder buttons put un even pressure on the SMD switches and would wear them out to the point you had to put sideways pressure to get response
PSP - the infamouse Batman Disc launcher as I like to call it... you put even the slightest twist on the body of the psp and the door opens launching your disc out... and never mind the horrid battery life of the psp... one of the main reasons to mod it is so that battery vampire UMD doesnt have to be used
I COULD go on even further but I think you see that EVERYTHING that gets released from consoles, to cars, basically anything ever is going to have problems... some of them arent show stoppers so people tend to over look them... no excuses needed... - illDecree, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5They don't. i sent mine in with a small (intentional) magic marker dot on the side.
wasn't there when it came back
told a friend, and when he sent his in, he intentionally scratched his initials in an un noticable place.
never seen it again.
another friend sent in his box, and got back an elite
:-D
MS never seen that one again. - Valyn, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5Sony, as a large company has just as many issuses with customer service.
Just to make my point here are some of the screw ups, that Sony has made, just like mocrosoft has done with the RRoD's:
Remember the Sony Classic CD rootkits, the fixes for them that made them worse.
The update to the sony pictures DVD DRM that kept the dvd's from playing on their own brand new model dvd players.
How about Securom...
The 'liscencing issues' that kept sony movies off of the 360 update to NXE?
We have been hearing for YEARS how great HOME is going to be, evidently its a piece of crap. No wonder Sony's online component is free.
True, the RRoD issues are absolutely stupid. Its a major screw up. But dont give me that ***** about 'The PS3 would never do that' becasue sony has more ***** ups than microsoft. - punkcat, on 12/13/2008, -2/+7correct they have no excuse, thats why they fix them and extended warranties.
people act like it was M$'s plan for this to happen, no one is regretting it more than them. - frygar, on 12/13/2008, -3/+8I almost sympathize with customer service on this one - had MS not designed such a shoddy piece of hardware, this problem wouldn't be happening in the first place.
I hope he gets his console fixed soon, though. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5I wouldn't be pissed I would just demand the xbox they claim to have and then send in the broken one later and have 2 xboxs.
