- anexanhume, on 01/21/2009, -5/+98Over half of those games are DS games. This demonstrates a clear cultural difference. The Japanese are a country of commuters, many of whom spend several hours on trains every day just to get to and from work. The only way to pass the time is reading or hand-held games. The trend here is obvious.
- username9000, on 01/21/2009, -5/+74Unless you are a DS or a Wii or Monster Hunter you are pretty much irrelevant in Japan.
- ZackAttack007, on 01/21/2009, -10/+68I'm actually surprised that there is even one.
I guess that means MS is making progress in Japan? - arizona01, on 01/21/2009, -28/+82Japanese have bad taste in games and porn.
- jerrolds, on 01/21/2009, -21/+68Those guys are missing out
- Vandalizer, on 01/21/2009, -8/+47It's no surprise that Sony and Nintendo dominate the Japanese market and that Microsoft has had a difficult time there.
- FacePuncher, on 01/21/2009, -5/+34I dont care what kind of weird animal collecting game sells big in japan. Give me more games like fallout 3 dammit!
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -3/+31You've hit it! Microsoft needs to make a 360 game where you go around bukkake raping schoolgirls!
- Trifold, on 01/21/2009, -4/+29XBox isn't popular in Japan. This is news?
- kingmanic, on 01/21/2009, -3/+27Xenophobia/protectionism: maybe a little
It's more likely poor marketing. MS doesn't understand the market and it's initial xbox efforts were derided as openly insulting. Like Nintendo marketing WiiFit with the slogan "buy wii fit you fat useless Americans". Their 360 efforts were more subtle but much less well funded. Many didn't even know there was a new Xbox revision until some time after launch. Japan does not traditionally have much of a market for FPS's either. - NotYourProdigy, on 01/21/2009, -11/+35C'mon Japan, we buy your monopoly crap house system from Sony, you buys ours from Microsoft, fair trade.
- krolm, on 01/21/2009, -1/+19several hours?! damn! can't blame them for groping women on the train then i guess
- BinaryFragger, on 01/21/2009, -2/+19complete list at http://www.kyoto.zaq.ne.jp/dkbkq103/yso/top100/200 ...
I'm surprised that メタルギア ソリッド4 outsold ファンタシースターポータブル. - inactive, on 01/21/2009, -16/+31Is this because of their Xenophobia?
- GabrielRadic, on 01/21/2009, -12/+27You must be American :-)
- Trifold, on 01/21/2009, -2/+15Yeah, ***** you babby.
- specialK16, on 01/21/2009, -2/+15LMAO, reading this comments is like going into a meeting of USA nationalists and Xbox fanboys.
- Turbojugend27, on 01/21/2009, -8/+20It isn't like the Ps3 is killing it with olny 10 games either though.
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -1/+13Fanboy rant activate!
- phpirate, on 01/21/2009, -9/+20Missing out on generic shooters.
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -7/+18Tales of Vesperia is an awesome game, with a huge fanbase in Japan. If Xbox360 starts picking up more popular Japanese franchises they would sell more. Its kind of obvious that Nintendo and Sony would sell more games in Japan.
- MrFurious2k, on 01/21/2009, -10/+21I bet I could make a game that would easily jump into the top 100 on the 360. Just make it a super-amazing, extraordinary super rendered tentacle rape and magic golden showers dating sim.
Secret is out. The real money will be in co-op play for Live! - MRintheKeys, on 01/21/2009, -2/+12And to think that real Japanese wouldn't want to play as an American and shoot Japanese soldiers in WW2.....
- volacide, on 01/21/2009, -5/+15The 360 barely even broke into the list itself and the PS3 has MGS4 up at the 11 spot. Pretty huge difference.
360 Tales of Vesparia= 161
MGS4=600 - richmomz, on 01/21/2009, -3/+13And 96 out of those 100 don't even have an english translation for the title apparently.
- JCEEZ, on 01/21/2009, -1/+11The best is how PS2 has more games up there then PS3
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -4/+13^ Butthurt MS fanboy
- foomojive, on 01/21/2009, -4/+12I was gonna say, what about Lost Odyssey? That game is really awesome, I'm on disc 2 now (4 discs long!!). It's a very japanese RPG with an epic, emotional story, creative art direction, an AWESOME soundtrack by the great Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame, and simplified by-the-book classic RPG gameplay. (About as simple as chrono trigger if not more so) But it was released in Japan in December 07 and other countries in 08. I heard that game did very well in Japan and sold 360s.
- staticneuron, on 01/21/2009, -0/+8Top of the list is Monster hunter for the PSP. And it isn't about collecting animals. Its about traping and killing gigantic monsters (mainly dragons) and it is very fun and probably offer you more playtime than fallout 3. And fallout 3 offers alot of playtime.
- YouRookies, on 01/21/2009, -1/+9They aren't American! They're making the wrong games for Japan. They don't want to buy Maddens, Guitar Heros with American Music, and Mindless Shooters. Let's see how well their popular games sold over here like Guitar Freaks, Virtual Fighter, and Gundam...........Oh that's right, we Americans didn't buy them either. And don't give me the BS they don't buy it because it's American. Blizzard games sell all over the world.
- EvanGH, on 01/21/2009, -4/+12Kotaku: posting non-news, porn, unsourced rumors, unattributed links, and totally false information since 2005.
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -2/+9Well I seriously doubt the Japanese are first in line to play Call of Duty: World at War with how they are portrayed...
- phpirate, on 01/21/2009, -1/+8But yet anytime I play on Xbox Live I always find the cussing 10 year olds.
- danj484, on 01/21/2009, -1/+7How is babby formed?
- Spliced88, on 01/21/2009, -4/+10I stand here befuddled by the amount of hate xbots are portraying upon the japanese for not buying their console.
Different strokes for different folks kiddos! Not everyone has to be a Halo/GoW fanyboy like you. - bilbravo, on 01/21/2009, -2/+8Please don't compare PS3 to Mac. I don't want to be associated with Apple in any way. Neither does my PS3.
- Tonelico, on 01/21/2009, -0/+6are you really surprised? The Phantasy Star series has become increasingly unsuccessful from PSO forward, on both sides of the Pacific. And MGS4 is like...c'mon man. It's MGS.
- hasslinthehoff, on 01/21/2009, -7/+13Let me guess... it's either Tentacle Rape IV or Battling Seizure Sidepocket Creatures.
- picoarthur, on 01/21/2009, -2/+8Yea I was there recently and everyone was either on their DS or on the cell phones.
- Vanor, on 01/21/2009, -0/+6Or maybe they are actually responsible when it comes to have sex and don't wanna be teen-aged parents?
- Tonelico, on 01/21/2009, -1/+6you are an idiot... Katakana =! Latin punctuation
- Ommatidia, on 01/21/2009, -4/+9Here is another strange statistic about Japan:
It is impolite to caress a superior's left nipple with you right hand while entering his wife, without first acknowledging the symmetry of his earlobes. - jo21, on 01/22/2009, -1/+6maybe if the ps3 didn't exist.
for GTA4 ps3 got most of the sales street fighter and re5 willl likely do the same
GTA4 had 100k+ sales on the ps3 first week.
360 not even 30k. - KyleEatsCrayons, on 01/21/2009, -0/+5does the wii remote vibrate?
- OrangeTide, on 01/21/2009, -8/+13He must not be Japanese is the better answer.
- Flashypoo, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5@both of you, this phrase applies.:Or a tentacle.
- aladrin, on 01/21/2009, -2/+7That number 1 game is Monster Hunter Portable 2, in case you were wondering.
Let's give the top 5, for fun.
Monster Hunter Portable 2
Pokemon Platinum
Wii Fit
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros Brawl - Versh, on 01/21/2009, -1/+6Poor marketing is a major issue, though maybe it's the established genre inclinations-- like western developers emphasize FPS, while the Japanese companies consistently update the puzzle, RPG, and platforming franchises.
Fortunately, both sides of the ocean sales seem to agree on Fighting and multi-player Action-Adventure games. - Chirp08, on 01/21/2009, -2/+7Add a co-op game mode involving the Xbox Camera and your sales will increase exponentially.
- mesostinky, on 01/21/2009, -6/+10Who cares? They sell a metric ***** elsewhere and sell more games per unit then any other system. Japan simply isn't as relevant as is was 10 years ago especially if you don't live there. Hence the Xbox 360 still doing very well with little support from Japan.
