- reaper527, on 07/07/2008, -5/+74why do people think the elite will be different from any other 360? all 360's use the same parts, the only difference with the elite is that it has a black case and a bigger harddrive.
xenons RRoD the most,
zeyphers RRoD less,
falcons seem to be pretty stable so far. (the current motherboard revision)
the original elites had zeyphers in them, and have had the RRoD since launch. newer systems seem to be just fine for the most part. - JackDoyle, on 07/07/2008, -1/+41I have an elite and I already had the RRoD problem some time ago. Microsoft replaced it, apparently, as the one they sent me back had a new serial number.
- h3ndrix, on 07/07/2008, -1/+35Mine overheated a few months ago. No redrings, just plain ole freezes on bootup and hanging audio. Fortunately it was repaired under warranty. I def believe its less prone to overheating but def not protected from it entirely.
- mctom987, on 07/08/2008, -4/+36Dugg for being "borked."
- MewTwo, on 07/07/2008, -5/+31When are they going to improve the hardware? Consumers seem to put up with it so they don't need to? Any news about revamping xbox live, etc. mean nothing to me if they haven't done anything about the hardware. What a circus.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/07/2008, -4/+25"and if the 360 may break a lot more, so what?"
I normally stay away from 360 diggs, but how can people deal with broken 360s? I have absolutely no patience with faulty electronics. I hate dealing with customer service, and then shipping, and then waiting for it to come back a few weeks later.
EA handled their Rock Band instruments well, though. My guitar broke and they shipped me a new guitar right away, and then I shipped back my broken guitar (instead of the other way around), more companies should practice service like that. - Rockmaninoff, on 07/07/2008, -10/+24I've had my Xbox 360 Elite for well over a year and have had no problems.
I try to keep it as well ventilated as possible, though. It stands by itself on top of my desk with a few inches on either side of it. It's not placed in an enclosed space, and my room stays relatively cool.
I'm at least one happy Microsoft customer. - apoc06, on 07/07/2008, -3/+16"....The issue has been fixed, mainly by the 3 year sweep it all under the rug-plan." - there fixed for ya
i've only RRoD'ed once, but skipping and issues with freezing have made me hesitant to play for as long as id like, and makes me think twice about buying cross platform games on my x360. - dha07030, on 07/07/2008, -5/+16I live in constant fear my xbox will break fortunately I am at the same time having a blast playing on xbox live so the two balance each other out.
- ChinezePanda, on 07/08/2008, -2/+13For Microsoft?
yes yes it is - shutaro, on 07/08/2008, -1/+11The 360 Elite is Swedish?
- WhereAmI, on 07/07/2008, -3/+13@Truspector
Don't forget I also spent money on a 360 as well.
@AwesomeMonster
I guarantee you that living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin that I have many things to entertain myself, i.e. Summerfest for the past week and a half. Saw Seether and Five Finger Death Punch. But when you spend ~400$ for something it better goddamn work when I ***** want it. - FFXIfrohike, on 07/08/2008, -2/+12What saddens me is what all this RROD mess means for long term Xbox 360 gaming. I mean... I can still fire up my Sega Saturn and run games on it. I suspect I won't be able to do this with my 360 in 4 years, and that makes me sad ;_;
- DarkShroud, on 07/08/2008, -3/+12Look at the sticker on the back. If it uses 200 watts it's not a Falcon. If it uses around 175 it is a Falcon. But even being a Falcon won't stop it from RRoDing or getting the other errors. My Zyphers had every problem except the RRoD. Freezing, grinding discs, loud as hell drive. I wanted MS to compete with Sony but damn they need to work on their hardware. Even people from Sony said they were jealous of the Xbox1 with it's hard drive.
- santasing, on 07/07/2008, -8/+17"The issue has been fixed, mainly by the 3 year warranty."
"Also the DRM issue is fixed, it may not be up to your nerdy standards but it works just fine for me and everyone else who knows what to do."
See what I meant in my post. This idiot will defend the 360 no matter what.
Recognizing the herd mentality of people like him and knowing that no one likes to be called wrong, even if they have to defend their crappy purchase all the while getting screwed with a bad product and worse service, that right there is the genius of Microsoft. - Duositex, on 07/08/2008, -1/+9Let's put this into perspective. My car has 85,000 miles on it. How long have I been without the service of my car due to total malfunction? Zero days. It's an ENTIRE CAR and it's more reliable than this toy. And before anyone says, "but your car costs 40 times more than my XBox," I say, "does that mean your XBox should be 40 times less reliable?" Think about the fact that all it takes is dedicated quality manufacturing to make something reliable.
- SOS84, on 07/08/2008, -2/+10Not surprising. You rush something into production to beat your primary competitor to market the result is usually not very good. Can't really blame them though, if they hadn't, the 360 would have gone the way of the Dreamcast within a year and a half.
- bigjosh359, on 07/08/2008, -2/+10Dont email, call them! Emailing does not work.
- MewTwo, on 07/07/2008, -3/+10The reason why there are hardware problems is because people play it too much? I disagree. Sure, if they only played it a few hours a week they wouldn't experience RR (for the time being), but come on, people play games for a long time... that's not rare; it's not unexpected. They knew how much xbox's were played, it's not like they had no idea the stress their console would be under.
I'm a little dumbfounded, I thought the Elites were significantly improved, whereas... enough time goes by after it is released and the problem remains.
And about your last comment... eh, not really. Depends on who you talk to and what they like. - WhereAmI, on 07/07/2008, -7/+13Not his luck at all, thats another problem with the 360. That and ghosting. If you've read around you'll see that when people get these errors they force a RRoD by overheating their 360 on purpose to have these problems fixed for free as the 3 year warranty only covers the RRoD ("the error caused by 3 flashing lights")
- santasing, on 07/08/2008, -2/+8Suuure....here's a cookie.
- WhereAmI, on 07/07/2008, -4/+10Funny how many people leave the PS3 "running like it is a PC and don't take much care of it as such" and now its in the Guinness Book of World records for Folding@Home.
Oh and then there's the Warhawk servers that are alot of PS3s:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/11/sony-erects-mas ...
Yes they are obviously well maintained and ventilated, but a 360 could not do this. - SgtQuackers, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6Wifi works perfectly fine. It would be their internet connection that was causing them to lag.
- theaceoffire, on 07/07/2008, -4/+10Not surprising... the original had a 33% failure rate (supposedly), and the new one had 13% (supposedly).
^_^ There fore you fell into the 66% (to 87%) of people with no issues (yet).
Course, all 360's will die if they get too hot, so keep it safe. - homerjs, on 07/08/2008, -0/+61st one lasted 3 months 2nd one lasted 1.5 years just sent it back in it's coffin. Every 360 will eventually RROD
Mine were kept flat, well ventilated and used a max of 10 hours/week....and still they RROD'd
Why cant Microcrap fix this problem already. boo hiss boo hiss - ScionX, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5"The issue has been fixed, mainly by the 3 year warranty."
Come on now, please don't tell me you consider that as "fixed"
I love my 360 just as much as anyone else but I, like alot of other people am dreading the day that I'm going to have to (once again) send my 360 in for repairs.
Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate them fixing it for free but I shouldn't have to wait for them to send me another 360 to play my games. - GhostWithToast, on 07/08/2008, -6/+11I just sent my 2nd system back. Everybody I know also had to either replace it or send it for repair at least once. They are horrible and it pretty much sucks.
- wTheOnew, on 07/08/2008, -1/+6Gaming on a PC would qualify as not gaming on a console.
- dc5mike, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5I had an elite for 4 months. I had bought 4 xbox before that, and they all had RROD. I never sent it to MS, just kept buying new. Now thinking that the elite would be better than the other types, since its, elite, I went ahead and bought it. Now, 4 months later, it just stoped working, sorta. There are no RROD this time around. I have sound, I can use the controller, play games (sorta), but no VIDEO! I tried using another plug, but it still does not work.
Previous to the video not working, my Ethernet port went to the ***** aswell. So I bought a wireless adapter. A couple of weeks later, the screen started going green, red... in the end it was all f**ked up!
The funny thing is, my friend's 'new' xbox did the EXACT same thing before it died. Plus his is manufactured AFTER mine. He's got those newer xbox pros with HDMI.
Anyways, I'm pissed. - apoc06, on 07/07/2008, -3/+7i can not think of a single piece of consumer electronics that i can not leave up and running for extended periods of time.
dvd player? no... computer? no... ps3? no... tv? no... laptop? no... ps2? no... and the ps2 was supposedly considered prone to breaking.
with your 20+ years of gaming, surely you remember leaving your NES or SNES or MD/ Genesis on for extended periods of time playing a cartridge game because its backup batteries didnt work anymore. i cant think of a single console ive owned that i havent left on for over a weeks worth of time with no incident. - mywhitenoise, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5I post on here about 5 days a week because I have nothing else to do at work, I'm rarely on my computer on the weekends.
...what does that have to do with AppleGeorge saying this article already hit the front page? This isn't a dupe, and you guys are both morons. Especially you, besides CollapseControl, you are the biggest 360 retard on here. - SSCrow, on 07/08/2008, -3/+7Well I'm still enjoying my launch 360 with no problems other than a slightly odd Disc tray.
- GlitchEnzo, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4How is that even related? If a car, plane, or gun fails it could result in the death of one or more people. Therefore they have VERY rigid testing regulations (especially airplanes). If the same amount of time and money went into testing game consoles then of course they wouldn't fail as much, but I would consider that a massive waste of resources. If my 360 dies, it's just an inconvenience, but if the plane I'm in dies, then I probably will die as well.
Stop trying to compare apples to oranges. - eightyk88, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4im almost positive that all they did was put a new case a rigged a pointless hdmi port on a regular xbox and called it 311337
- handheldchimp, on 07/08/2008, -5/+9No ***** it's "borked". It has the exact same insides as the newer premium systems as well.
Same crappy GPU + Same crappy lead-free solder = RROD - scabbers, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3"Next gen" doesn't exactly seem appropriate for these technological turkeys.
- FriedTurkey, on 07/08/2008, -6/+9I am waiting for a new SKU so I can buy one. I don't want a crappy one. Here is what I want and I don't think it is too much to ask.
1) Built in Wifi
2) Fan noise isn't as loud
3) Annoying DVD drive is fixed
4) Doesn't break down
Screw Bu-Ray or anything else. Is this stuff too much to ask?
New SKU please that I don't have to look at model numbers to know if it is fixed or not. - pitchblack16, on 07/08/2008, -2/+5when will all this madness end, i hope to god whatever platform replaces the 360 doesnt have these problems
- bobjr94, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3The new version is NOT fixed. My brother in law has one. Lasted about 6 months before it started locking up then wasnt much longer before it stopped altogether and hes just left with the 4 red lights. His brother got the 1st gen 360, lasted him about 8 months before it died. He sent it back and ever since he got it back the fans have made a noisy annoying grinding / buzzing noise. Way to go Microsoft.
BTW: The guy with the failed elite 360 has been waiting for some time (weeks) microsoft is suppose to be sending him a shipping box and so far nothing. - mywhitenoise, on 07/07/2008, -6/+9Don't get a Wii, man. I have mine modded, and I have around 80 games (VC games, GC games, and Wii games) and I still can't justify the amount of money I spent on the console, controllers, and modchip. It just isn't worth it if you have the other 2 consoles. Find other ways to entertain the ladies...if you must entertain them by media, get Rock Band.
CollapseControl, I hope you're paid by Microsoft to sponsor them. if not, you're the most pathetic fanboy I've ever come across. No one should have that much brand loyalty. - SifooD, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4Apart from my first Xbox Elite dying after 5 months of buying it, I've had an overall great experience with the 360, especially with Xbox Live. My new Elite, which came in after repairs sometime in December 07, has been working fine without any issues, no overheating, nothing. However, I just don't play too much Xbox nowadays so that may explain why it's working fine when I do get on it.
- GlitchEnzo, on 07/08/2008, -3/+6I bought my Elite the day it was launched (sometime last April I think). I've never had any problems with it. It's one of the best consoles I have ever bought, in terms of the enjoyment I get out of it. And this is coming from a guy who has bought many consoles in the past.
- papercupped, on 07/08/2008, -5/+8My xbox360 elite red-ringed when I was half-way through GTA4. The support team have been pretty terrible. I've been emailing them for about 3 weeks now and they keep telling me to turn it off, wait a bit, turn it on again. I think i may just take a ***** on it and send it back....
- Cardcaddy, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3I purchased the Elite after sending back my 3rd Xbox360 back for the RROD. My Elite lasted 5 months and red ringed. What amazes me is that they received my elite on June 25th and I got another one back on July 3rd. It was never that fast before to get a new unit. I literally expect them to fail eventually which is sad.
- santasing, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4Apple, it wasn't on the front page. Although I could imagine certain people on Digg fervently hitting the bury button all day long yesterday hoping this does not make it.
Kind of funny in retrospect. - Timan, on 07/08/2008, -2/+5Ha what a coincidence, mine broke last night (falcon) playing the new Halo3 map.
http://mt14.quickshareit.com/gallery/view/6f2bc628 - totorototoro, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4Guess we'll find out at the next Microsoft earnings report-it was just two quarters ago they took a 1.2 billion charge to cover any RROD fixes to the last batch. Probably didn't imagine the Elites were going to need it as well.
- Blandyman, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4That's what scares me, too. I have an NES actively hooked up to my TV that I play on every few weeks. And a Super Nintendo, N64, Dreamcast, and Genesis. None of them have any problems (save for the need to blow on those cartridges) but I'm worried my 360 will be unplayable in 15 years when I introduce my kids to the Resident Evil series.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/08/2008, -3/+6"They don't always replace your machine though. They repair them as well. Companies do not benefit from just giving out products."
Both Sony, and Microsoft, and probably Nintendo, always send out refurbished replacements. It would take too long to repair, and send out the same model.
How is this not cost effective? Receive broken item, send out refurb, repair broken item, send out repaired broken item to the next person who requests service.
As opposed to your theory of waiting to receive broken item, figure out the problem, fix broken item, test broken item, ship it back out. - sjbdallas, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4I got the RROD on my Elite after a few months of play, sent it back, and the new one worked fine for several months. Then I got some odd error on the screen and a single red light and couldnt play anything. Sent that back and the new one has worked fine for a month or so.
The turnaround has been less that two weeks and I'm not so addicted to gaming that I have issues with not having the system for that time. They sent me a free month of LIVE each time so I can't complain about that either.
At least they've extended support for these and owned up to the problem. -
