            As soon as these guys realize (and yes, the original creator of GTA is working on a "crackdown" version) that a GTA MMO is the way to go, we are in for some online, massive multiplayer mayhem!

            Imagine this: You have to play for 2 hours as a "civilian" for every hour you play as your GTA character. Therefore, to play 2 hours as a GTA dude, robbing cars and causing mayhem you would have to play a "survival" type game as one of the civilians in the game... that would be awesome. It would be a bitch being the old lady crossing the street, or the hooker...but it would more than make up for it when you got to run over the old lady, knowing she wasn't an NPC....

            The cars drive a little weird though.

        I've never played any of the Grand Theft Auto series and I've never felt compelled to do so. However, this game is getting such good reviews that I'm definitely curious. What I'd like to know is whether or not one has to like the whole mob/gangsta/whatever thing to really get into the game? Well I know no one "has to" but is that a big part of the attraction?
        • SurrealDream, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4Yes and no. GTA games are basically sandbox games, if you want to play them that way. The thing I love best about GTA is the sheer volume of detail, social paraody, jokes and the Talk Radio stations etc. It' like a great parody film, or a TV series like Spaced or Arrested Development, where you can appreciate it's virtues on the surface, or take the time to notice the widespread allusions and in-jokes.

          Get it. Trust me, the GTA games are "all things to all people", there's bound to be SOMETHING in it that'll grab your attention if you play it a while.
        • Goblin, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2I spend most of my GTA time just driving around and hitting jumps, popping wheelies, that sort of thing. I usually run through story mode to unlock everything, but after that it's just play play play.

          Personally I preferred the story in Vice City to San Andreas as the humour was better (and the 80s setting was awesome), but the terrain in San Andreas had huge scope to play.

Don't get me wrong, they're great games, but by the time I've heard 80 bajillion people verbally blowing a load over it, I always end up being let down when I actually play the game. I expect some sort of epic game that's going to change the world, and it ends up just being fun to kill some people, see how long I can get away from the cops at the highest notoriety, and....well, that's about it. Digg me down all you want, but the game has an uphill battle to fight in my mind, because every time I hear a fanboygasm about it (especially from people who haven't even played it yet), it pushes me further and further away from wanting to play it.

          Oh wait, you were serious... CoD4 is a brilliant game, but it's hardly perfect, what with it being incredibly short and the multiplayer full of hacks on the PC. 9.4 is over-generous given that, whilst its incredibly refined and fun, it isn't a classic game in the 9/10 sense.

Halo 3 was disappointing, and not even close to the level of COD4. The fact that Halo 3 got higher ratings than COD4 is a tell-tale sign that hype still rules the industry, and marketing is everything.

The only people allowed to review it so far are IGN, empire online, and the official xbox magazine. Only two "objective third parties" have reviewed the game so far and I think you can count on the fact that some money changed hands. The game has enough fans that the rating will be seen as plausible and everyone will buy it. Since fan enthusiasm after a certain amount of momentum has little to do with the actual quality of the game, how the game compares in originality and quality will probably never be seriously considered.

    • dansmeek, on 04/26/2008, -11/+8yes, but ever since the site got bought out and more "hardcore" they stopped giving 10s. even high 9s. and very very few next-gen games have received a score of a 9.5 or higher. and if you exclude nintendo exclusives, and hyped up FPS you get almost zero 9.5 or greater scores. they have become stingy with their rating system (a good thing) so a 10 today is about 100x harder to receive than when Pokemon, Ocarina of Time, and soulcaliber received 10s.
      Look at the N64 games and sort the scores by 9's. You will be amazed at how many games received 9's... and one can only think that a lot of those would be bumped down to 8's, and maybe even 7's today.
      Plus...... obviously next gen games are expected to do way more than what pokemon did. they must be innovative creative, with great graphics (games lose points for god damn screen tearing), voiceovers (thats a huge point killer), an epic soundtrack (no good soundtrack? -1 point), and awesome controls (no good controls?? thats a -3 to a -5 just ask Lair....).
      Clearly GTAIV has very few faults.....

I ordered the PS3 version as I figured that I don't have enough time to finish the main game so the DLC isn't too much of a loss. Also; I really hate the volume of the fan on the 360 so I often use the PS3 version when given a choice and there's always the fear of a second RROD attack. Thank God I opted for the 360 version of COD though; the online play just doesn't seem the same on the PS3 due to the lack of numbers.

I'm impressed, particularly with the indoor areas, when Niko walks into the bowling alley in the video review my jaw dropped. It's clear this is a gigantic leap up from any GTA style game released so far.

As the review mentioned it plays hella great on the 360's older hardware, obviously being the godchild of some spiffy optimization. If Rockstar puts half as much care into the PC version the above cards might play it perfectly maxed, so long as the rest of the machine is up to task.

Especially since the graphics seemed to get worse in each new trailer. But if that was to sacrifice for gameplay, then.... who gives a *****! I'm sorry guys, I'm rambling, I'm just so excited!
    Now, what will gamespot give it? an 8.5? a 7.5? haven't seen much ad revenue from Rockstar on GTAIV there. Probably an A+ from 1up. and a high 9 from nearly every other company. We may not just be talking about game of the year here. But best game ever? HIghest rated Metacritic game ever?

      What's so wrong with the Wii? There are a handful (five at least) of games that are definitely worth buying and have tremendous replay value, and were worth the experience. I don't have enough time to play more than a few games, so why not play the good ones? 360 has a couple that I would buy again, but the Wii does too...

      Bleh. I am just tired of hearing about how the Wii isn't for serious gamers.

      (and my laptop can play COD4, so I don't really *need* a 360 for that)

I hate to say it, but graphics do matter to some of us. Not to say gameplay should suffer because of great graphics, but the Wii is a case of just the opposite- compromising graphics for gameplay. I don't think the Wii could pull off some Xbox 1 games. That's sad. Nintendo didn't even put enough video memory in the damn thing to support HDTV. I've heard people make the same argument you've made, but they never list any games. I personally only play the Wii Sports, and that's only when I have people over who aren't gamers. It's really hard to play the Wii after playing something like Rainbow Six Vegas 2. I like the Wii, but I love my 360.

        • Goblin, on 04/26/2008, -1/+5You know, at the distance I sit from my 40" 1080p display, there is nothing wrong with the Wii graphics. Sure there is a bit of aliasing, but Mario Galaxy looks great. I'm not saying it's close to the XBox360 (which I also have), but it isn't so bad to impact on the fun aspect. Same thing apples to surround. It may not do full 5.1, but Dolby Surround does an adequate job of placing the soundstage in the right area most of the time. Game quailty by gamerankings/metacritic I'm guessing is skewed by the amount of shovelware on the Wii (which is a problem), but there are several Wii games I play repeatedly and love. There are also 360 games I play repeatedly and love. Online... can't argue with that, but I tend to find the Wii library better suited to family play anyway. As for the controller... well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think you'd have a hard job defending the Wii controller as being poor. It has so much flexibility in what can be done, is comfortable, especailly with the nunchuck as you don't end up with arms cramping into position as they move independently... I love it.

          Horses for courses, but I love my Wii and 360 pretty much equally as they give different experiences, both of which are good.

        I don't have component cables, but I play it on a few tv's. One of which is a 52" widescreen tv with HD support, one is a 42" LCD (I believe that's the size), and one is just my 22" tv in my room. It moves around. I agree that it isn't as beautiful as the 360, but Mario Galaxy looks amazing on the LCD, even with the normal cables.

        The games I have played that have lasted for me are as follows, in the order that I got them:

        The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
        Super Paper Mario
        Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (I know it's cheesy as hell, but it did provide a TON of hours of fun, believe it or not, haha)
        Resident Evil 4 (I know you can play it on the Gamecube, but it's amazing on the Wii. The aiming is worth a replay)
        Super Mario Galaxy
        Super Smath Bros. Brawl
        Okami


        Those are all solid games. I don't need 8x Anti-aliasing in order to enjoy it. Sure, I enjoy the graphics of something like Bioshock, but, even then, I can find a ton of things to bitch about if I look hard enough. I just got past the nitpicking and decided to give it a shot.
