- Sk8SkaNJ, on 07/07/2009, -4/+27the future of his games lie in something others have already done?
- Malik112099, on 07/08/2009, -3/+23Gears is a mindless 3rd person shooter gore fest. Why the ***** would you add thinking (read: RPG elements) to it when it sells well and everyone that buys it likes it the way it is?
- stoanhart, on 07/07/2009, -3/+22I sure hope RPG elements are the future of shooters - plain old shooters are so dull by now and are what made me quit gaming for a while. I'm having a bit of a Renaissance lately, and BioShock is the most recent shooter I've completed - I could hardly put it down.
- flashpointbob, on 07/08/2009, -1/+15They can't even get a standard shooter out to retail without huge bugs, do they really need to be adding anything more complex until they can release a stable game?
- Malik112099, on 07/08/2009, -0/+13Yeah, just press A.
- Laughto, on 07/08/2009, -0/+11"Harvey Smith's Deus Ex"? That's Warren Spector's Deus Ex, Harvey Smith's Deus Ex 2.
But yeah, we definitely need more games like Deus Ex. - Wisgary, on 07/08/2009, -0/+9Yes. Things others have done and the mainstream has ignored.
Though I'm not sure how the Deus Ex model would apply to everything. The RPG system and character progression associated with a game like Deus Ex falls in naturally because the game has an epic, complex storyline where the character himself is growing along with the story, increasing his abilities both through experience and through biomechanical augmentations. Same thing with Bioshock. I don't see something like this being valid in a game like Gears of War where Mr. Epic Soldier # 2837 grows into... a slightly more epic soldier?
Then again there's the Metroid way of going around things, *****-tease of a fully powered up character followed by some explosion that makes you lose all of your equipment. Or amnesia. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/08/2009, -1/+9Hey, I think you dropped this: /s
- Jdshald, on 07/08/2009, -6/+13Oh well, I never liked Gears that much anyways..... And what makes Bioshock an RPG? Because you can select your plasmids and weapons?!
- weratestuff, on 07/08/2009, -2/+9Plenty of people.
- DOTQWERTY218, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6some people still like traditional shooters, right?
- MRintheKeys, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5If by RPG you mean, a compelling story, character growth, and cohesive writing, then I am with you.
- MonkeyNews, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5I want an open world Wild West RPG in the mould of Fallout 3. It would be beautiful
I can only hope Red Dead is awesome. - TheRedeemer, on 07/08/2009, -7/+11Gears sucks anyways.
- Anji-Mito, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4It's amazing how business-oriented Cliff sounds. I mean, I appreciate his honesty but, starting out as the boy that cried over Lunar and ended up caring about words like trans-media-properties must be a terribly soul-crushing experience.
- Mo0eY, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3I got to the third sentence before I wanted to punch jeffk in the face.
- ZombieSociety, on 07/08/2009, -2/+5I'd be more impressed if it contained elements of not being as overrated as the first two.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3I wish they had a name for RPGs like Deus EX where your level up choices actually affected the game instead of the dull "You leveled up! You're exactly the same, but stronger!" system that plagues many games. It was fun as hell, felt like you were really playing your personality, and best of all tripled the replay value.
First time through - tweaked out sniper
Second time - Rocket/machine gun death machine
Third time - Tech/Stealth/Melee
Each drastically changed the character and the game. The same 'quest' would turn from a fetch mission into a kill mission.
How about, SRPG - Statistic Role Playing Game, or Serious Role Playing Game - hybridcreation, on 07/08/2009, -2/+5As much as I'd love to tell Cliffy B to shove this one up his ass as well, a small part of me hopes one of those elements is "PC version".
- Sogui, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Because "RPG elements" don't necessarily mean having to add any thinking to the combat.
I mean think about Call of Duty nowadays. Your weapons can be customized and upgraded, your "class" has specific perks that you have deliberately selected, and all of these things are "unlocked" as you "level up" from "experience points".
Yet while you're actually playing the game, you aren't doing a damn thing besides running around and shooting the crap out of other people.
Any shooter can maintain its roots while adding "RPG elements" that keep the game interesting and players hooked longer, which leads to a more cohesive community, more word of mouth sales, etc...
P.S. Call of Duty 1 and 2 were superb game experience (Game of the Year stuff) that sold very well. Then IW added the RPG stuff in CoD 4 while still improving the game experience and guess what? It's now probably the best selling shooter series of all time. - GrammerPants, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4That and there was the illusion of choice, which in that game was a joke. But it was a start and kept the game a little more interesting too bad it was such a damn easy game.
- AndrewDB, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4Cliffy B taking ideas from games that already exist. Consider me shocked and amazed.
/sarcasm.
Seriously, go back and look through his game design history, a lot of the ***** he's claimed credit for designing has already been designed in previous games. - Elranzer, on 07/08/2009, -2/+4I'm getting kinda tired of shooters passing off as RPGs lately.
I don't care what anyone says. Fallout 3 was not a real RPG. - rpgmakr, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3I know this world is ***** up when a game like Fallout 3 passes as a RPG game.
Games like this are killing real RPGs tho... - shiftkgb, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2I love GoW2 online but... come on. You press A and you shoot people. Thats all the thinking required.
- dobbinmon, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2the bigger question is whether or not they'll stick to the ***** matchmaking in multiplayer
- stoneking2312, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2The idea of watching giant dumb kill machines hack computers and debate ethics like in Deus Ex between sawing aliens in half just doesn't seem like a good fit...
- 0tis, on 07/08/2009, -1/+3I didn't finish Gears 1... it was ok, but a cover system alone does not a great game make.
- Elranzer, on 07/08/2009, -1/+2So basically, a first-person shooter with RPG elements? That's basically all Fallout 3 was.
- beand1p, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1well said
- Mo0eY, on 07/08/2009, -3/+4Meh, Gears is overrated. I also hate the jello blood that the Unreal Engine brings to the game.
- Mo0eY, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4foUP2LuX8 - A very funny video on the Glitches of War.
- Parrappa, on 07/08/2009, -3/+4Millions of people?
- MrFisty, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1"Take cover"
"Firing"
"Take cover"
"Firing"
"Reloading" - LinuxCobra, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1It takes me 10 minutes to find a match so I havent played the game since I finished it 2 weeks after its release.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -2/+3when is that 2nd game coming to PC? aiming with controller is ghey.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Pretty sure he's not the only person thinking this since all things point towards Halo Reach being a FPS/TPS and RPG mashup as well.
- Ashkc88, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1They're JRPG fanboys, who don't know good games when they see them. The whole Japanese RPG thing is a fad, always had been since Final Fantasy 7. FF7 wasn't even all that great of a game.
IMO, JRPGs are trash compared to Western RPGs. - onux16, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1What the hell do you think the CoD [multiplayer] series is? It is nowhere near the degree of RPG as the Final Fantasy series, but in online multiplayer, you still level up and earn stronger weapons and new utilities; even your weapons "level up" to earn you additional accessories. It's taking a common element of RPG and applying it to a different audience.
Personally, something like that would be retarded when applied to Gears of War, but then again, I'm probably not thinking outside of the box. - diggduggDOOM, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1All of these comments and yet nobody can tell me why they feel Fallout 3 is not a "real" or "pure" RPG.
It had character and story development with multiple paths. Equipment and skill management (including upgrades). Combat was based primarily on stats.
What's missing that would make this into an RPG?
What the hell is a "pure 100% hardcore RPG"? - weratestuff, on 07/08/2009, -3/+4They managed to ***** up the second one really bad, why not go even further for the third?
- laibixi, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Wrong place to spam, sucker!
- weratestuff, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1I wasn't talking about Gears 2. They Call of Duty'd that *****. The majority of people who play that is little kids. Sure, you can play like a mindless idiot and just shoot at people. Or you could truck someone, perfect your pull offs, get better at blindfire snipe headshots, mess around with torque bow ricochets... I guess we just play for a different reason.
- Darkangel754, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Fallout 1 & 2 are pure 100% hardcore RPG.
Fallout 3 is oblivion with guns. - Cdog923, on 07/08/2009, -3/+4Great! Now GoW can be ***** in 2 genres!
- diggduggDOOM, on 07/08/2009, -2/+2"Fallout 3 was not a real RPG."
How so? - bfjpwn, on 07/10/2009, -0/+0sounds like gears 3 is going to be way different than the first two, which were fun to play but had some flaws
- viclaster, on 09/09/2009, -0/+0Gears 3 should just be called Gears of War Online and eliminate the campaign, well maybe not. Buth EPIC needs to focus on expanding the war in the online community. They should create bigger maps, larger battlefields and maybe some sort of customization of your player. I'm talking vehicles, (Raven's, Tanks, and maybe some ATV like vehicles).
- jmones, on 07/08/2009, -2/+2I hate you cliffy b you ruined GOW.
