This is an open and shut case, it can't be her XBOX, she's a girl. Probably stole it from her boyfriend or something.

Why hasn't she gone to a small claims court yet?

Microsoft thinks everyone is a thief. That's why it's so easy to install, validate, and restore their operating system. It's understandable why they think the way they do. They think you're trying to screw them, because after all, they'd screw you.

It's a sticky situation, what if they did return it and it did turn out to be a thief, they would still catch negative media. For Microsoft it always seems like a lose-lose situation, or maybe they just can't do anything right, idk.

I would like to see a copy of her receipt w/ matching S/N + bank statement before I take her side.

I'm sure if we all Digg this they'll send her something nice. Still won't fix the problem of all the RROD'ing consoles and early adopters who has no HDMI loving though. For that I'll never forgive myself for being an early adopter.

It seems to me like most of the consumerist stories are horribly slanted

i had a nightmare sending my third xbox back. it got repaired and then got 'lost'

i heard nothin for three months until finally my friend who works for xbox put in a word for me. i have now had numerous phone calls with people dying to make sure my problem was resolved. my only advise is to keep pushing up the chain as best you can. it's a huge customer service snafu, and unfortunately 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease'

tbh, this sort of exposure should sort her out.

This is a lot more believable, because there are hundreds of stories about similar situations just like this from Microsoft. Probably thousands more that you just don't hear about.

I don't want to get into a 360 vs. PS3 flamewar here. But, why would people keep buying these systems if they keep breaking? They get one repaired, wait a few weeks, and the repaired one will break again soon enough. The vast majority of games are multi-platform releases. Why buy the console that known to have such a high failure rate, and such horrible support? Someone can say something like "I like XBL better than the PSN". It doesn't mean that much if the system itself keeps breaking and you can't access it.

I think you guys have a really abusive relationship with MS. One day its your hero. "ooh man we love MS! The ring of death is nothing but a feature of the 360, gives me time to go play outside!" next thing u know "They stole my 360, blah blah blah".

Personally Not only do I ignore the abusive person, I also ignore the person who is willing to live with it.

How can you get accused of being a thief if you have the original receipt? Even if she turned in 5 other xbox's for repair all of them should appear in their database with the appropriate serial number. If she sent another xbox back and the serial numbers didn't match up, there might be a case, but I doubt that is what happened here.

It shouldn't be up to Microsoft to determine who owns the xbox or not. Thats the job of the police, not microsoft

Anyone else here not consider the consumerist a valid news source? It just seems that they don't require any sort of verification before they start accusing corporations of things. Guilty until proven innocent I guess.

Hey people, do what a friend of my did when his Xbox 360 when t*ts up a second time. He bought a new one from Walmart, put the broken one back in the box, and returned it to Walmart. You screw two thieving corporations with one brick. Or just by a god damned PS3 already, I am sick of reading about people acting surprised and outraged the fact that Microsoft both can't make a decent quality game console and enjoys screwing their customers over.
