- MAGZine, on 11/01/2009, -6/+218if you mod your xbox to play pirated games and then connect to xbox live, then you're ASKING for a ban.
- xMrAx, on 11/01/2009, -15/+205I don't see the problem. They are just banning people who have modded the xbox for piracy and to cheat on Live.
- doctordbx, on 11/01/2009, -22/+115Well, as a 360 Owner with about 30 games, all bought and paid for, I have no sympathy for anyone banned.
I don't buy the '***** quality' excuse, most games have playable demos these days.
I don't buy the 'games are too much' excuse either, because if games were too expensive, people wouldn't buy them, and the gaming industry would learn to change and adjust. Games are sold at the price equillibrium that matches the price/demand economical curve.
I also don't buy into games are so expensive because people pirate them, I think that's a good line for the copyright industry, but it doesn't really hold water these days with modern protection systems.
If you're going to go out of your way to circumvent the protection system, which is not something you can er... accidentally do, then you get what's coming to you.
What is important that a game house gets rewarded financially for producing a good game, and gets punished financially for mediocre games. By levelling the playing field and ensuring that all games have the best chance of success, the onus in the game house to deliver a product people will pay money for. The better the game, the more money the game house makes, the more they can pour into developing the next game, which should be even better. It doesn't always work, but on the modern protected platforms, this model has a better chance than ever of succeeding. Making hits free and accessible through piracy only hurts the developers and in the long run, the gamers themselves.
I work hard to earn my money to buy myself luxuries that I enjoy. I research my games before I buy them, read reviews and play demos where available. Try it some time.
Of course, if you don't subscribe to any of this, you're free to develop all the games you want for an open source and completely free GNU based platform, it's called Linux. - ladfrombrad, on 11/01/2009, -3/+89http://imgur.com/k9efu.jpg
Not me! But a dodgy XBL friend who one day had 200,000+ gamer-points, next day the ban hammer on the console and reset points to zero. I had to laugh at his somewhat perceived infallibility. - jihadjohnson, on 11/01/2009, -6/+85True, /IF/ you can modify the games.
All games are cryptographically signed by Microsoft, the firmware hacks which they are banning from Xbox Live do NOT allow you to run unsigned code (modified games). There are hacks that will allow you to run homebrew, and other unsigned code, however again to-date this will not allow you to cheat on Live.
So next time you die and try to blame it on that damn cheating hacker, that's not it. You just suck at the game ;-) - DaviDTC, on 11/01/2009, -9/+66If Apple were to ban ipods/iphones from connecting to itunes if it recognized pirated music, people would be pissed off.
- doshindude, on 11/01/2009, -12/+66Ironic, since if this were any other article that wasn't about console piracy, you wouldn't be saying that.
Yay for digg being a comprised of a bunch of hypocrites. - Memnochxx, on 11/01/2009, -10/+62No it doesn't.
- TobiasParker, on 11/01/2009, -16/+64No one cares about your fanboyism.
- jihadjohnson, on 11/01/2009, -10/+56Actually concerning the Xbox 360 you cannot cheat on Xbox Live, (unlike the original Xbox) this is a common misconception. You can only play pirated games.
- mhf03, on 11/01/2009, -4/+49Yea, if that were true PS3 games should be cheaper, since its not even possible or practical to pirate PS3 games.
- trs21219, on 11/01/2009, -5/+43you modded it..... and your pissed that it broke.....?????
- angers, on 11/01/2009, -25/+57Nickelback sucks.
- opticwind, on 11/01/2009, -4/+33Yes, the incredible price of developing new games will surely go down if less people buy the games.
- JeSTeRSeVeN, on 11/01/2009, -1/+29I can't really tell from the article...or any articles, who are they banning exactly? Is it people that have done the DVD-ROM firmware hack?
- DaDrake, on 11/01/2009, -5/+32MrNobody808, who are you to dictate the profits a company can make? We are talking about an entertainment system... nobody NEEDS an entertainment system. Thus their profits are totally irrelevant.
If you can't afford it or don't want to pay for it... don't. Is this concept really that difficult to grasp? - confoundedjoe, on 11/01/2009, -2/+29Ever hear of WoW? 11million+ gamers on one game. $15 dollars a month. Prices have not dropped a cent in the time it has been out despite continually rising number of subscriptions. Oh, and you can't play on Blizzard servers as a pirate.
- trixxz, on 11/02/2009, -0/+27As long as they're not suing John Doe for x million dollars, the punishment fits the crime. End of story.
- bagelmaster, on 11/01/2009, -6/+32Honestly the only people that got banned were morons who don't upgrade the firmware hack every time there is an update available, and don't stealth check ALL of their games, and people who go online with game before street release. A friend of mine who does this did not get the ban hammer this Halloween. My friend followed those rules listed above....yes, my friend was a very smart fellow.
- OnTheLastCastle, on 11/01/2009, -3/+28You could get it repaired if you hadn't screwed with your warranty. Good work saving money.
- jihadjohnson, on 11/01/2009, -1/+24Yes
- DaDrake, on 11/01/2009, -3/+26You hear that... it's the world smallest violin.
- roxgod666, on 11/01/2009, -7/+30Same with the Zune. What's your point?
- Tbags, on 11/02/2009, -4/+25sum up for all the threads here,
I'M HOLIER THAN THOU, BOO HOO YOU PIRATE - bagelmaster, on 11/01/2009, -0/+21Smart people unplug the ethernet cable and set the date ahead of when the game is officially released and do not connect that cable again until after the official date (because LIVE automatically updates the date when you connect).
- inactive, on 11/01/2009, -2/+23actually he stated a potato
- jmack549, on 11/02/2009, -0/+20I got banned. But I modded my 360 and knew the risk. I'm not mad at anyone like some people seem to be (why?), I knew what I was getting myself into. What can ya do?
- Eunonia, on 11/01/2009, -2/+21bastard. Screw you *****.
- SaladCactusKing, on 11/01/2009, -2/+21End Region Locks.
- theonlywizdum, on 11/01/2009, -0/+19What they really need to focus on is dealing with all the network manipulation problems. I can't count the number of times that, with the score 48 - 48, our screen goes to the "finding host" screen, and when we come back the game is over and our team lost.
- miket, on 11/01/2009, -0/+19maybe if Fox sold me my TV, but they didnt
- Krakerjax, on 11/01/2009, -3/+21Oh yes, the 4 bucks you pay a month for XBL is a deal breaker.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/01/2009, -1/+19@rjbeckjr: Logic fail. As others have already asked, why aren't PS3 games cheaper then?
Figure it out. People who "pirate" games aren't customers. It is highly unlikely that such people would have bought the game at full price if it was impossible to pirate. It is even less likely that those people could even afford to purchase their game collections legitimately.
My music collection is probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $7500. I don't have that kind of money to spend on entertainment. If I couldn't download music, I'd just have less music is all. The same goes for most people who pirate games. - JoEBlack982, on 11/01/2009, -3/+21"i have no sympathy for any industry that is worth billions of dollars"
through hard ass painstaking work by dedicated developers. You act like games come out of thin air. And not all devs are successful, some go bankrupt. - GrammerPants, on 11/01/2009, -2/+20This isn't BS this is the user agreement. You agree to it, so if you don't follow it then you're at fault.
- Zetal, on 11/01/2009, -6/+24From a straight up PC Gamer's point of view, 360 users sure get screwed.
- Surkit, on 11/01/2009, -0/+16I'm 19 and in school, quit your bitchin. If you really feel like pirating, that's fine, just don't complain if the ban hammer gets you.
- kayfouroh, on 11/01/2009, -2/+18Super cool story, bro.
- DaviDTC, on 11/02/2009, -0/+15That there are a lot of comment from people saying it is good that Microsoft is banning those that have pirated copies. Any other submission about piracy and everyone defends it. Just saying.
- DaDrake, on 11/01/2009, -8/+23Thank god someone like you have the courage to fight these draconian prices on a necessity that every man, women and child needs.... wait what.... oh..... we are talking about an entertainment system and not food and water?
If it's too expensive and you just REALLY need (like I need a Lamborghini) get a job. If you going to pirate anyway, certainly don't waste my time bitching. - NeoSporin, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1511 year old boys?
Sign me up - Eaststand, on 11/01/2009, -2/+16you are all pirates whether you like it or not is what hes saying.
- disturbed4686, on 11/02/2009, -2/+16why isn't she in the kitchen?
- richardstaboner, on 11/01/2009, -1/+15***** off
- monodelasno, on 11/01/2009, -2/+16You don't have to buy the newest game. Wait a couple months and the price drops a bit. Wait some more, lower price. Shop eBay or your local used. Swap and borrow with a friend.
Part of life is not being abe to afford everything, having to do without the instant gratification. I went through college, I worked the 20-30 hours a week and lamented not being able to afford the latest album or being able to go to a concert.
But you learn to enjoy what you have and eventual have that money to piss away. That is until you get married and have kids. - MrNobody808, on 11/01/2009, -11/+25Do you honestly believe that if no one pirated then games, DVD, and music would be any cheaper? All sides of the entertainment industry are making huge and ever increasing profits year after year. Don't buy into the lies they spin about piracy costing jobs and jeopardising future releases. They just say that because they can't justify coming out and saying, "We only made $2 billion profit last year, and we want more.".
- Tecton1c, on 11/01/2009, -4/+18No, people digging you down think you're having a ridiculous whine fest with your entitlement mentality. Gaming is a privilege. If you can't afford it, find another hobby until you're done with college.
- caramelzappa, on 11/01/2009, -3/+17Yea, I don't have sympathy for them either, but that doesn't give me the right to steal their games. Too expensive? Don't buy it. You think they make too much money? Don't buy it. It's not a necessity, you don't have a god given right to play the latest and greatest games. You blame the companies who create something at being greedy, and use that for an excuse to pirate. But the fact is those companies are sharing their creations with you, for a price they set. If you steal it, then you are the greedy one.
- DaDrake, on 11/01/2009, -7/+21If people didn't think it was worth the price, they certainly wouldn't have subscribers.
- bagelmaster, on 11/01/2009, -1/+14Just by opening it to get to the drive to mod it you have to tear off 2 or possibly 3 stickers. MS covers their ass on that stuff.
