- SgtQuackers, on 11/04/2007, -10/+89This would be really cool if they made it. But hopefully it will be better than all of the other failed video game based movies.
- whatthefu, on 11/04/2007, -5/+77***** this, I don't want to hear about a Halo movie until after it's hit production.
- kevinmotel, on 11/01/2007, -6/+68i'd watch a halo movie made entirely with the game engine if peter jackson got behind it. he could just put it in his file share
- chocobomog, on 11/01/2007, -10/+67Unfortunately, the Halo is in between a rock and a hard place with this.
In order to do it "justice" it would have to have a huge budget, otherwise it will end up with effects like the Doom movie. Most of the characters would have to be CG, or else have some really good "Predator" style costumes. War movies are very expensive, as are sci-fi films. Even Starship Troopers, a movie which should pale in comparison to the effects used in Halo, cost over $100 million. Yet studios are unwilling to pay for a huge budget when most game movies gross less than $50 million. And if they cut back the budget then all of the fans will boycott the movie.
Plus there is not a big market for the movie other than game fans (which can't keep the movie alive alone). There are few to no human characters in the story. The main character's face isn't even shown, it is hard to follow a character with no face and doesn't emote. You may get some sci-fans in the movie, but you won't draw in the women (this won't have the abs 300 did) or older crowd who don't play the game. And it will be too violent for kids.
Not to mention as a movie the Halo story looks like a rip-off of Aliens, Starship Troopers, Predator, Soldier, etc. The best part of Halo was the multiplayer, and that doesn't translate well into a movie.
Basically you have a movie which requires a huge budget to be done properly, no bankable stars (or humans for that matter, just a guy in an emotionless suit), a relatively small audience with no crossover potential, a story which has been done better before, and finicky fans who want to movie to be perfect.
Good luck with that... - carterbaldwin, on 11/01/2007, -3/+34This movie was obviously going to be made eventually; there's a huge amount of money left in this franchise. I'm just glad that they're sticking with Peter Jackson and Blomkamp rather than some Michael Bay clone.
- Puppetfunk, on 11/01/2007, -2/+32"And then BOOM the Pelican crashes into the ground starting huge fires and killing lots of people."
"Sir that's a special effect not a plot idea." - JefffN, on 11/01/2007, -1/+22This just in: Duke Nukem Forever is in pre-production!
- RuthlessPirate, on 11/01/2007, -1/+21I want the people that were involved in the Halo 3 ad campaign involved in the movie... those ads were epic.
- nreynolds, on 10/31/2007, -3/+22dude, have you watched the live-action shorts? they're amazing.
- Phyltre, on 11/04/2007, -10/+28I disagree. Remember the Museum Halo 3 commercial and its brethren? It could be done any number of ways--and done well.
- Hoogs, on 10/31/2007, -0/+15Yes, and I enjoyed it.
- FuzzyC, on 11/01/2007, -0/+14Wait, so you make $16 a day? I'm so sorry.
- TDTech, on 10/31/2007, -2/+15New Ze[a]land
Thanks. - EvanVolm, on 10/31/2007, -3/+15People shouldn't judge Neils take on the Halo movies solely on the shorts he has made. He's gone on the record saying they represent less than 0% of what the actual movie would be like.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+11Pretty much.
- Scheissen, on 10/31/2007, -0/+9Just watch Red vs. Blue.
- FreakyT, on 11/01/2007, -1/+10Remember Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within?
That was supposed to be a "sci-fi story that appeals to a broader audience." Personally, I thought it was execellent, but it was a complete box office flop. The reason? It was marketed as a video game movie. Think about it: all the Final Fantasy fans refused to see it because it had nothing to do with the games, and others refused to see it because they didn't like the concept of a game-based movie.
With that in mind, I think that no matter how good Halo is, a movie of it would probably suffer the same fate as other video game-based movies. A shame, of course, since I think it would make an excellent movie. - thesandreckoner, on 10/31/2007, -4/+13i refuse to think about this movie
im just gonna blindly hope it gets made and that it doesnt suck. - inactive, on 10/31/2007, -2/+10Yes.
- NessTheHero, on 11/01/2007, -0/+8If they do this, I don't want them to do the story line from the games. I already played the games, why would I watch a movie of it?
I want either the start of the war, or the Fall of Reach. - iFungus, on 11/01/2007, -2/+10Your analysis is pretty good, but I think the Halo universe is big enough to write a sci-fi story that appeals to a broader audience. Remember that the movie will not be a retelling of the video game, and hopefully the movie will be portrayed not as a video-game homage, but as an independent story-line set in the same universe as Halo. The Believe ads weren't obviously Halo until Master Chief was mentioned, but I think the ads pulled in any viewer, video-game fan or not.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+8Me too, though it was 40 minutes too long (a Jackson trademark perhaps).
- markwilcox, on 11/04/2007, -2/+9Sorry but it's not back in pre-production. The CVG article was all quoted from the Variety article from last year when it lost it's studios.
Halo is dead. Let it rest. - krasherspk, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7He is not directing this movie however, and just producing, and I'd have to say WETA = amazing.
- razrielle, on 11/04/2007, -0/+7Theres 5 of them now, ghosts of onyx goes into the spartan 3 program
- azurepalm, on 10/31/2007, -0/+6ho, you are so wrong my friend. V for Vendetta can do it without EVER revealing his face. :)
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -2/+8For Christ's sake, watch the shorts and Blomkamp's previous work and develop some of your own conclusions.
- Gryfft, on 11/04/2007, -0/+6King Kong was Peter Jackson's love letter to cinema. It's a labor of love and it shows. I mean, he got a serious performance out of JACK BLACK.
- tehpwnrate, on 11/01/2007, -4/+10Refer to Halo: Landfall. Low-budget scenes that still turned out awesome. Scroll down here to download: http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topne ...
Anyway, remember that this is Halo. Halo 3 sold ridiculously fast. There's definitely a big enough fanbase to make this more profitable than other films. - tmbrwolf19, on 11/01/2007, -4/+10The museum commercial would translate horribly into film. I love experimental stuff more then most (The Fountain was great), but I can't see people wanting to sit through scenes of models for hours. While the other little shorts weren't bad, they wouldn't convey a strong storyline very well in their current format. It would be like Battlestar Galactica, which while great, covers very little plot wise in a episode (its a tv series, so it doesn't need to). I have to agree with chocobomog, Halo is simply too much of a niche, but demands to much of a budget. Its content isn't something like Spiderman which can be translated to a broad audience and still enjoyed, as its content is too mature for kids and unappealing to most people over 30. I have a feeling that its just going to end up on the list of movies Hollywood should have made by didn't. Not that I want to, but I fear thats the reality.
- Hoogs, on 10/31/2007, -0/+6Uhh...maybe he just likes doing his job, and doing it well? I like to think that some people care about things other than money.
- kmeredith03, on 10/31/2007, -4/+10I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be made after watching the halo shorts. They were awesome and that is only a taste of what could be done.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5Um, no. He sued because THEY reneged on the deal relating to share of the profits.
- Ajajadude, on 10/31/2007, -1/+6Keep in mind that live-action shorts are far from a major motion production.
- LordSeth, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5Transformers should not be put in the same category as Doom. Transformers may not be the best movie ever but it was still a fairly good movie where as doom is as bad as an Uwe Boll Movie.
- miles32, on 11/01/2007, -1/+6Hell the universe has at least 3 full length novels of backstory
And they were pretty good... - advancedOption, on 10/31/2007, -2/+7The Master Chief is not Gordon Freeman, in a movie, of course he will get plenty of dialog.
As for the helmet, in the making of Halo 3 they state the reason they leave the helmet on, and don't let the player see is face is so he's an empty slate; an avatar for the player to inhabit. The movie doesn't need an empty slate, they need an actor to take that part, and they'll have to figure out ways to keep his helmet off during large chunks of the movie. - thedragon4453, on 11/01/2007, -2/+7A lot of people keep saying that they dont see anyone but hardcore fans going to this. That seems kind of silly to me. This game sold the most copies for the videogame ever. Have you been able to watch TV for more than 15 minutes and not see something about Halo? I'm sure that even the non-gamers are curious about it. But getting people into the theaters isnt really what I see being the problem.
The problem will be it not sucking. As someone said above, this movie is going to have to have a huge budget. And it will really have to have a compelling story. I think the game did a pretty good job of that, but on the screen it will be even more important, especially if they decide to keep Chief's helmet on.
Personally, I think they ought to build off of the "Believe" ads. When I first saw that, I didn't know what I was looking at for a second. If anything, I would minimize the sci-fi stuff a bit. I mean, it should be obvious its the future, but not smack you in the face "look at my future gun" obvious (looking at you, Doom.) Write the best damn war story, and then add all the cool sci-fi stuff. - goeric, on 10/31/2007, -1/+6Halo 3 starring Vincent Chase as Master Chief.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -1/+5Sure, that'll work well in a movie.
- MrFisty, on 10/31/2007, -1/+5What work? He's done a bunch of shorts. No wonder studios and investors are a bit apprehensive. I mean, if Voltron The Movie can get a green light yet Halo can't, something is clearly up.
All these Halo shorts they keep releasing smack of "Look, trust us, he can do it, see, trust us". I'm just surprised they're putting up such a fight for an unknown director with virtually no track record. Sure I like his vision, I really like it, but why not get him on as head art director or something and put someone else in the hot seat, seems like a better situation where they'll still get Blomkamp's skills with the reassurance it's being steered by experienced hands. - msarge, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4You're retarded. The Resident Evil movies sucked balls.
- SillyDigger, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4If its anything like this I hope its made. http://stage6.divx.com/Game-Trailers---Martster/vi ...
- 0xFEEDFACE, on 10/31/2007, -1/+5After having watched the "Landfall" and "Alive in Joberg" shorts, I'm looking forward to seeing what this director can do with 1) a solid script and 2) a good budget.
Yes, I the CG in both shorts was a little rough -- but he clearly didn't have the budget to hire ILM. If money is put into this movie, it could sweep box offices. The question is: will the studios give it the funding it needs? - LordSeth, on 10/31/2007, -1/+5I just hate it when the ads are better than the movie.
- sittered, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3I do not wish that Kevin Smith made all movies. Because then all movies would be Kevin Smith movies.
- Encablossa, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3Yes, dead with over 5 million copies sold on first day.
- Koldkompress, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3Yeah, wouldn't want to mess up the delicate plot points there.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3^^guy who misspells words!!^^
- drinkycrow, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3I think he meant the shorts that he made before the Halo ones. The Halo shorts were admittedly not his best work but his previous work was pretty killer.
