- ChocChunkOaties, on 09/22/2009, -5/+41This is a terrible review and kind of contradicts what Eurogamer went over in their review.
From Eurogamer:
"The ODSTs lack the Chief's recharging health beneath an overshield, but they soak up a good few hits before they exhaust their stamina, which opens a broad health bar along the top of the screen to depletion unless you can find cover. The basic attack-and-retreat pattern of past Halo games remains, except now you need to keep an eye out for health packs, much as you did on the first of the Forerunner's ring worlds way back in 2001."
then reading this review it says
"The armor is different as well: The health recovery system relies on time to recover and less on random health packs around the map."
It sounds like the reviewer hasn't even played the game. - AdmiralAcbar, on 09/22/2009, -15/+48I preferred Arstechnica's review. Basically just a $60 expansion pack that takes 4 hours to beat.
- sporkman, on 09/22/2009, -3/+29Hmm, this is a weird review, it was very short, which I like, but didn't list anything bad about the game, or anything good for that matter. It just listed some features, and a very brief introduction to the beginning of the game. I would have liked a "This game is good, but it's exactly like Halo 3 once you get past the new features" for a rating of 3.5.
- sgxyay, on 09/22/2009, -2/+22I didn't buy any of the map packs and I've been wanting to get back into Halo3 multiplayer...worth the money for all those maps, firefight, and some new campaign. For me at least.
- monodelasno, on 09/22/2009, -1/+19Really, it suprises you? I mean the box is only ***** labeled Halo 3 ODST.
Not much ambiguity there. - kungfujedis, on 09/22/2009, -1/+18what? has this reviewer played halo before?
"The health recovery system relies on time to recover and less on random health packs around the map." ummm, thats been that way for awhile...
"you are not yet the familiar super soldier "Master Chief,"... and you never will be....cause these are different characters. - i4mt3hwin, on 09/22/2009, -6/+23I think ars had the best review on the game so far, they basically said it's not worth $60.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2009/09/the- ... - DarthVolta, on 09/22/2009, -1/+14This is a $60 expansion, but I still bought it on release day.
Damn it, Bungie. - MetalHead73, on 09/22/2009, -1/+13Ah once again Digg, you just have to hate something if it's popular.
- geoman2k, on 09/22/2009, -2/+12hard to get excited about firefight without matchmaking. i'll never get to play it, the only person i know with an xbox doesn't like halo so i'm SOL
- Andrewbot, on 09/22/2009, -1/+11Originally I was not planning on buying this game, but when my Halo 3 disk got stolen a few weeks ago, I gave in.
I went down to gamestop and picked up a copy, got back to my dorm, and played. And played some more. And then more.
Firefight, while being similar (ok, like 93% the same) to Horde and Nazi Zombies (kinda), is a blast with four players on Live. I didn't get to play too much campaign yet, but it seems fun and the health packs combined with "stamina" definitely make the game not the run-and-game we're used to with the Chief. - DarthVolta, on 09/22/2009, -5/+15I love that you're being buried just for stating your opinion. It's even in plain, understandable English.
- Elset, on 09/22/2009, -0/+9IGN said:
"In many ways, Halo 3: ODST is a return to the roots of the Halo franchise...[Players] can only aim one weapon at a time. They have a health bar that requires health packs to restore once their light overshield is depleted. They can't jump as high or fall as far or take as many bullets without stumbling into Death's open arms. They handle quite like Master Chief did in Halo: Combat Evolved, and they have a powerful scoped pistol to complete the throwback feel."
Is this the best Halo since Halo? According to that quote it should be. I haven't played it yet though. - numbnick, on 09/22/2009, -3/+11The only thing you need to know about this game: Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, and Adam Baldwin all provided voices for the game. This is probably as close to a Firefly/Serenity reunion as there is going to be.
- Rfriaz, on 09/22/2009, -0/+8PC Mag? We invented the internet to stop dealing with that *****.
- monodelasno, on 09/22/2009, -9/+16I was first in line at the local Wally-World last night.
First time I'd ever stayed up to grab a game.
I'm not disappointed. - monodelasno, on 09/23/2009, -0/+6Well I did use two topics that seems to be hip on hating now days, WalMart and Halo.
- mattyboy555, on 09/22/2009, -1/+6Just keep the ODST DVD and sell the stand-alone multiplayer disk on ebay.
You can even use this custom box:
http://xcastonline.com/index.php/News/make-your-ow ... - hrelax, on 09/22/2009, -3/+8I wait to try it. It's coming
- Mujokan, on 09/22/2009, -0/+5Ask someone with a popular ratio of 40% to submit it ;)
- JKount, on 09/22/2009, -2/+7From my understanding if you own halo 3, it's not worth $60 bucks.
If you like Halo and don't have halo 3, then it's worth it. Just because you can play halo 3 multiplayer through ODST and download all the maps.
Also I hear the game is like Halo 3 where the campaign sucks if you don't play with a few friends. - badlogik, on 09/23/2009, -2/+7Metacritic doesn't say anything. Metacritic just aggregates reviews that already exist. Ars's review is clearly way below the curve here in its hate, showing that it is not an unbiased review.
Your argument is that PS3 games are reviewed better so Metacritic must be biased? LOL! Fanboy much? - kinseyincanada, on 09/22/2009, -0/+5of course its an expansion pack for rucks sake it called halo 3 ODST, now some people might not think its worth the money, now thats just a personal opinion i personally think it was and so far the campaign has been great and firefight seems to be awesome, thou the lack of matchmaking in it is a huge letdown. Hopefully they can add it in with a patch soon.
- MetalHead73, on 09/22/2009, -2/+7"exactly like Halo 3"
wooooooooooooooooooooooooosh,
someone hasn't played the game.
Disc 1 has absolutely nothing similar to Halo 3. I played a couple hours, the entire dynamic has changed, it's nothing like the Halo I've known.
Disc 2 is Halo 3's multiplayer, so that's a given. - MetalHead73, on 09/22/2009, -1/+6Wow.
Butthurt much? - AdmiralAcbar, on 09/22/2009, -3/+7I found that review to be more informative, maybe? More well-written?
- MetalHead73, on 09/22/2009, -8/+12PLAY THE ***** GAME.
I swear to god, you are a ***** idiot for talking out of your ass.
ODST is NOTHING like Halo 3. The entire game dynamic, the pace, the strategy, it's ALL NEW. - bulgingbritches, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3"Dull and action-less"?? Were you born in a guerrilla boot camp or something? While playing co-op campaign last night, we rounded the corner to find two pissed off Hunters charging us while a ***** sniper is taking pot shots. Add in the mix a few Brutes and this is "dull and action-less"??
Dude, you need to put down the free base. - GenericJoshman, on 09/22/2009, -2/+5Knock the price down 30 bucks (canadian) and i'll go buy it Bungie. Until then i'll dole out modern warfare 2's worthy full retail price happily. At least that game will last longer than 4 hours...
- Jordan117, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3That complaint is based primarily on the game's length. But I don't really trust his judgment on that, because he played through the campaign on two-player co-op on Normal. For the uninitiated, Normal is for casual players who want to breeze through the game -- only one step above Easy, which is designed for people completely new to FPS games.
Bungie recommends most experienced players start on Heroic, which offers a challenging (but not impossible) experience. Legendary is for the most hardcore players that really want an intense slog.
So for him to play through on Normal (and with a teammate, no less), I'm really not surprised he called the game too short to justify its price. - badlogik, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3The MP is exactly the same as Halo 3's multiplayer. There are no ODSTs and the pistol and silenced SMG are not present. The only addition are the 3 new maps.
- BabyWookie, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3_this year_
- identifiedlogo, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3Excellent...I was going to buy an XBOX and I was wondering if I should get Halo 3 or ODST. If I can get all the maps on ODST...ODST it is.
- ObKnoxcious, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3I dont get it
- Jordan117, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3The Ars guy played two-player co-op on Normal, for chrissakes -- of course he completed the campaign quickly. If you ramp it up to Heroic (like Bungie recommends) and don't skip over the extras like the audio logs, the game is quite a bit meatier.
That said, I still don't think it merits full price. But I bought it and enjoyed it. - BabyWookie, on 09/23/2009, -1/+4This will still sell more copies this year than all the PS3 game combined. LOL.
- ACiDGRiM, on 09/22/2009, -1/+4@geoman2k
WHAT!!! How ***** stupid, no matchmaking. - blaker, on 09/23/2009, -2/+4I'm skeptic of any future Halo games ever since Bungie decided it was a good idea to slowly take away multiplayer functionality in Halo 3 over a series of "map-pack" releases.
- MachineMessiah, on 09/23/2009, -0/+2That it is.
- BigLou, on 09/22/2009, -5/+7Considering I've never purchased a Halo game for the campaign, rather solely for the multiplayer, I can't wait for this game! Firefight mode looks incredible, and from what I've hear by nearly every review, it's solid and fun.
- Dustmuffins, on 09/23/2009, -1/+3You MUST have at least one thing making noise and flashing at all time to hold your attention.
- ObKnoxcious, on 09/23/2009, -0/+2Yeah thats sucks oh well dont lose sleep over it
- kinseyincanada, on 09/22/2009, -3/+5and firefight and all of halo 3 multiplayer maps.
- adeelarshad82, on 09/22/2009, -4/+6Ahh ***** in that case I wish he would have sent it to me. I would have played it and reviewed it for him :P
- navster15, on 09/23/2009, -2/+4Or... you could save $60 and just play horde mode in Gears 2, which has matchmaking for those of us without sufficient friends on Xbox Live. I am a huge Halo fanboy and even I can't justify this cash grab.
- covertbadger, on 09/23/2009, -1/+2"too many appetizers and not enough entrees"
To any non-Americans wondering why this statement makes no sense at all, be aware that for some reason in America the *main* course is called an entrée, even though the very word means 'entry' and refers to the dish you eat before the main course. So the aforementioned quote does not actually mean "too many appetizers and not enough appetizers", even though that's what it literally says. Just FYI for anyone wondering. - covertbadger, on 09/23/2009, -1/+2Dude, it's just a game, chill out. It's not important.
- Mayday408, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1Already beat the game.
In a half-step to breaking the worst thing in FPS this generation, regenerated health, ODST only have regen armor. You take a couple of hits, your marine starts breathing heavily, and if you recover you go back to 100%. If you don't recover, then you start losing HP (which goes down pretty fast.)
There are a decent amount of health kits that restore your HP to 100% instantly all over the city though. - badlogik, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1LOL. That was a hilarious read.
- casker, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1The only major issue I have with ODST is the price. It sure seems like we're asked to dish out a lot of cash for a game with limited content. All we got was a six our campaign, Firefight, and 3 new online maps. That really doesn't seem like enough to dish out $65 CDN. There is no doubt the game is great, but it is an expansion pack being sold for full price.
That and Firefight has no match making. I don't have online friends, so who am I supposed to play online with. -
