Halo is still the most played game on both the original xbox and the xbox 360. You could maybe argue that the CoD series is passing Halo in popularity but even that is a stretch. Halo is still THE Xbox game. Gears isn't even close.

I know it wasn't actually in the Gears of War games, but come on. People grew up on Master Chief the way many kids grew up on Mario. Gears of war is pretty much the first shooter to really do cover right (yeah I know killswitch blah blah blah I played it too) on the pc or a console.

No matter how great the single player experience is (even if its 12 hour long) and special features like bots, co-op and horde more in it, a shooter needs a great MP to create a big community like halo or more recently Call of Duty.

I'd say that Gears it the first 360 game that's come close to the popularity of Halo, but all indications point to it not even coming close to beating it.

It made playing with friends a pain in the ass. COD has a good lobby, and Halo 3 has a great lobby.

2. More sales do not equal better story fit for a movie.
I personally think Dead Space would make a great movie, but it didn't sell incredibly well like Halo and Gears. And if games sales defined movie-producability, we would be seeing Wii Sports coming to theaters Fall 2009.
Think about it. You would never get to see the lead character's face. I know this worked in V for Vendetta, but that was only because he was a tragic burn victim

That was the first game to be played more on Live than Halo 2 and it continued to beat Halo 2 every week at least until Halo 3 came out. Majornelson's Live activity list doesn't say it, but it was mentioned on a number of gaming news sites. One thing I wish they would do is mix the top 10 games from all sections so that we can see if the number 10 X360 game played on Live is being played more or less than Halo 2.
