- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -9/+51Since it appears the Ars reviewer somehow missed this: if you play FPS games, you should play the single player on Heroic or Legendary.
- atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -6/+31Wow. This review is amazingly even-handed. How very refreshing, and indispensible to folks like me who simply want the straight goods and are oblivious to hype. With that said, I think Halo 3 still is one of the best games this year simply for the amazing multiplayer.
I agree, though. If you buy this game merely for single player campaign, you're missing out big time. - Godlesswanderer, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23Stop digging them up unless you can prove them right.
- Brereton55, on 10/10/2007, -7/+22By the way they only reviewed the campaign not the multiplayer.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24Yeah it should be noted that Ars reviews the multiplayer portion and single player portion separately, and this is the single player review.
And who buys Halo 3 just for the single player? - atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15While I don't agree about single player, I do agree that the killer feature of this game is multiplayer. The comparison between Bioshock and Metroid Prime 3 is moot. In fact, if this game was ONLY single player, there's be no hoopla at all.
Still, I have to say that as far as sci fi stories go, Halo is not bad. - hobonetweaver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Gears of War is fun, chainsawing and curb-stomping is awesome... but I can only really play Gears of War for an hour at a time, tops.
Halo (mulitplayer), on the other hand, is a game that can rob me of an entire day if I'm not careful. - aegis9975, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16People that don't want to pay for Gold membership on XBL.
- mace2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Can someone translate this comment for me?
- Worldchrisis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The story(from what I've read in the books, I didn't play Halo 2) is very good for a scifi.
- coldphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10You've never heard of ars technica? been in a cave much
And as others have mentioned, this is only a review of the single player mode, which is probably the reason for the comparatively lower rating. - atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Nah. I still want to know how the fight is won. I've been waiting to know for nearly three years.
- wonderboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7While you can't compare the Halo single player to Bioshock's, it's still incredibly fun the first time through.
- opnickc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7spoiler jackass. bury him. and report while you're at it.
luckly my connection sucks right now, just saw the title when the page loaded, but I don't want any fans getting the game spoiled for them. - mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It's been publicly available on bittorrent for days.
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Wow, it beat Bioshock multiplayer? :) That's one Hell of a game you got there ;) *cough*
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Metacritic: 97/100 from 14 reviews - http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/ ...
- Tserk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Ars ftw. That site has slowly and consistently shown that they can be pretty objective about almost anything (imho).
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5and of course, you get buried, because on Digg, it doesn't matter if you're "right", it matters if your opinion is "popular". Yes, many PC games did the entire Halo thing years ago. Console guys don't like hearing that, so you get dugg down to death.
- Juntistik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Why do I keep seeing comments like this? Halo fans don't intimidate critics or reviewers, for some reason people have it in their head that theres a giant halo fanboy army that is going to overthrow the government because of a ***** review. Halo 3 is going to be the cause of the apocalypse.
- KyleMistry, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7You haven't heard of Ars Technia? Seriously? It's one of the better tech sites out there.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7No, in general, digging people down just because you agree with what they are saying is lame and chilidish.
Digging down is for hiding trolls and spammers so others don't have to read them, not for burying viewpoints that run counter to yours. - bj00rn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5100
GamePro
It's solid gameplay, immense replayability, online functionality and incredible production values will ensure its place in video game history, and it is, without a doubt, a satisfying and fulfilling close to the beloved trilogy[?].

The Forge is a gargantuan achievement that puts game design in the hands of players, daring you to be creative and invent a Halo 3 multiplayer experience all your own. Of course, the multiplayer is every bit as astonishing as it has been in past iterations and even eclipses its predecessors in many respects.

EuroGamer
The best game yet in one of the best FPS franchises of the era. Better than either of its predecessors, Halo 3 still can't quite escape the category of flawed masterpiece - but this time around, the flaws are so minor that even the most churlish of reviewers would be hard pressed to mark the game down.

Games Radar
The single player is bigger and brawnier than anything that's been attempted on a console before. The multiplayer, which already shadowed the competition, has improved to the point of ridiculousness. The new features - Forge, Saved Films, Coop - are frighteningly addictive. And if you don't like any of that, you're always welcome to edit it until you do.

It's hard to imagine a feature of this game that someone won't love... Sure, no one aspect of the game is life-changing on its own, but perhaps the package as a whole is. After all, Halo 3 has enough content to keep you stuck to your controller for weeks, if not months or even years.

Halo 3 transcends video games. It is a global entertainment experience. Just as "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" and "Spiderman 3" brought to a close two of the most lucrative and epic film trilogies of all time, Halo 3 brings to a close perhaps the most complete, engaging and downright fun video game trilogy of all time. There is absolutely no way any Halo fan will be disappointed by this game.

Game Informer
Overall, Bungie has crafted another masterpiece that serves as a fitting end to the trilogy (no big cliffhanger here).

Computer and Video Games
Halo 3 is the gaming equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster. It's not going to revolutionise the genre - it's not meant to - it's meant to be great fun, which it is. Never lose sight of that. The visuals, guns, vehicles, enemies, set-pieces, musical score... they've all been cranked up to 11 to create an experience up there with the best sci-fi properties.

Team Xbox
Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it’s Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie’s crowning achievements. They’ve basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we’ll be using for years to come.

Worth Playing
Between the ability to come up with your own bizarre custom modes and the theater mode, which records damn near everything you do with crystal clarity and allows you to play it back from multiple points of view, the worst thing you can say about Halo 3 multiplayer is that it’s going to force you to buy an Elite 360 just for the sake of having more hard drive space.

IGN
The campaign, which is very good, is Halo 3's weakest point. It doesn't capture the cavalier spirit of the original Halo, but you'll still have fun playing through it. There's no first-person shooter on 360 that can equal Halo 3's blend of cinematic action, adrenaline-pumping shootouts, and male- (and female)-bonding gameplay. Look beyond the gameplay and you have a rich feature set unlike anything ever delivered in a videogame.

GamerNode
Halo 3 takes every positive aspect from the first two Halo games, perfects them, puts them in a shinier and better looking package, tosses in wonderful community-driven content for a console game, establishes some awesome environments, and does it so damn well it's impossible to not have fun while playing.

GameSpot
It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.

GameDaily
Despite Halo 3's overall greatness, we can't help but feel somewhat let down by the narrative's lackluster conclusion (but stay tuned after the credits roll for a coda that hits just the right note).

The game's end sequence, to put it mildly, is an eight-car pileup. Fans of the series will recognize it as a poorly veiled swipe of a sequence in the original Halo, a challenge highlighted by a series of goofy circumstances and improbable level design meant to create an explosive end. The end result, however, is fairly absurd, as the whole shebang reeks of game developers wracking their brains to come up with the cleverest, most exciting finish, and shattering the fourth wall in the process.

The story just isn’t put-together well enough, the graphics are disappointing, and the levels have you constantly running back and forth. Yes, if all of these things were rectified, the game would be spectacular. But they’re not. - Hockeymac18, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Perhaps 10/10 doesn't mean "perfect" but rather as good as it gets? Every game that's ever received 10/10 has always had some fault. It just isn't humanely possible to produce a game with 0 faults. If it was true that 10 meant "perfect" than there would never have ever been games receiving such scores in the past because I've never played a game that was perfect.
- techmaster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Hardly a 7. Arse Technica needs to learn how to write a proper review.
- L4WL3RS34L, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5This guy speaks the truth, yet you Halo fanboys digg him down? I honestly don't see how Halo 3 is so popular...
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -3/+6In many ways, Halo 3 can be summed up as a prettier version of the Halo that you know and love. There are some new weapons, new vehicles, new items, new environments, and new enemies, but the gameplay itself is very much the same; it's an evolutionary change rather than revolutionary one.
Gee. Haven't I been saying this all along? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7news flash: "friends" are people you know in real life, not 14 year olds with touretts syndrome on xbox live.
i prefer not to pay for something every other gaming system in the world offers for free. - Tolzmaniac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Your flame+bury shield didn't work...
- Hoojo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Much better review.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Any reviewer that plays a Halo title on Normal deserves little weight in my book; and I usually consider Ars Technica to be great reviewers. Of course there is little memorable about the Halo 3 story when played on Normal...it was the same way with Halo 1/2...on Normal setting, the games are just a matter of running forward and firing away. Methinks reviewers should be required to pass the hangers on level one of Halo 2 on the Legendary setting...THAT was a challenge!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Honestly i'm not a halo fanboy but judging from the reviews, i'd really like to try this. Like ars technica said the game may not be revolutionary but evolutionary.
- null7238, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Just so you know, the multiplayer is amazing. I've been playing for the last 4 days with a few friends, and they did a really good job balancing it. The new maps are pretty nice, though it's a pain getting used to new ones (only one they kept was zanzibar really). I am utterly blown away as to how fun the multiplayer is. I played the campaign too, it's pretty cool, though I was pissed at the ending. The graphics aren't the greatest, but it's a huge improvement from Halo 2 IMO.
- Hickeroar, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8I do. I'm not interested in multiplayer in the least...
- aaron4, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7here is my unbiased opinion after having played the full game: its better than Bioshock. any fan of multiplayer should feel the same.
- BOOYASHACKA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Halo 3's campaign blows TF2's out of the damn window. OH *****! TF2 doesn't have one!
Both TF2 and halo 3 are great games, but you can't really compare them since they're so different. I'm sure Halo 3's multiplayer will be better than the xbox360 version of TF2, plus I bet you forgot that TF2 was specifically developed for multiplayer whereas bungie had to include a campaign plus all these great new tools. - Juntistik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That is what truly the comment system was designed for.
I never digg someone down if I disagree with their view. As long as its a valid point, insightful, or just outright hilarious I digg that person up. - strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+312:01pm Pacific Time actually.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I'm not allowed to have Wii in my name and be unbiased right? It could mean I love the Wii, or that I am mocking it, or neither. Funny how I mentioned 2 360 games in the comparison though, ain't it.
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2While I agree TF2 is a fantastic game, it's not a fair comparison. Halo is a console game so it looses by proxy to any hardcore PC shooter. TF2 for the 360 vs Halo 3 would also see Halo 3 kicking it's ass, such a fast paced game on the 360 would seriously suck unless if had Mouse/Keyboard support. Resistance vs Halo?... I'd say Halo would win hands down. It's just a pity all FPS games on consoles suck major ass.
Crysis, one FPS to rule them all! - phycospawn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2it says that the flame thrower wasnt in the campaign but it is.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2no, it indicates the opposite. Thats the most generic response he could give. Thats like saying there are multiple levels so you can play another one when your done with the first.
- terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2With all the new stuff you listed, in what sense would the game need to be different to contain new "gameplay" by your definition? The controls? I mean, it's still going to be a Halo game, if they made it a completely different game what the hell would be the point?
- calibration, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Starcraft? jk
- MrFisty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Looking forward to a week of non-stop "XYZ reviews Halo 3" stories a la Boshock a few weeks back.
- L4WL3RS34L, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I've played over a thousand FPS, and I assure you he's right. Halo isn't as new and original as you think it is, it has been done before.
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Bioshock and Halo 3 get 10/10 from places. Now I've played Bioshock, and it's a great game, but it's no System Shock 2. Furthermore, 1up has already given Halo 3 a 10/10 when other sites clearly point out its faults.
It looks like this is the year that 10/10 means jack **** in gaming. Ah, it was a fun rating system while it lasted. If the single player is flawed, that does NOT equal 10/10. - yohnstoppable, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The popular review sites rate the hyped up games high, because that is all the fanboys want to see. They don't want an objective review, but something that validates their opinion that what they are playing is the best game ever. Kind of like when someone gave Twilight Princess a sub 9 score and got barraged by hate mail from the fanboys when the game wasn't even out yet
' - terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4There were a few things like that which made me question whether this guy knows what he's talking about.
- cailie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You must have played some pretty impressive games in the past.
Games that really blew you away. Halo is a solid series but there nothing mind blowing about it.
A 10/10 has to stand for something - it should stand for "nothing short of revolutionary". -
