They delayed it because, at the time the 360 was first released, not many TVs had HDMI ports and since they were already losing a lot of money on each console sold anyways, why lose that much more more to include a feature that very very few people would use. Even if it only added, say, $10 to the cost of the system that would be another $100 million hit they would have taken on the consoles. The Hollywood studios would much prefer you to have HDMI since it supports their draconian copy protection schemes.
