- tprzepiorka, on 07/18/2008, -10/+54I am actually pretty excited about the update. I personally think that it looks fantastic and I think it is really great that Microsoft continues to innovate and provide us with a completely different and improved experience with out making us pay for a new console. Granted that gold subscribers do pay, but I certainly feel it is worth with this kind of service. I just hope that the in game dashboard is going to be fast and responsive since the current one is too slow. Not a big fan of the avatars idea also, seems to make the xbox look more "kiddie" like the Wii, but maybe that is wat MS wanted to do in order to branch out to casual gamers.
- deaftly, on 07/18/2008, -4/+36If Apple had a gaming system they would have charged $10 for this update
- rjc5056, on 07/18/2008, -1/+22Can I just delete the goddamn demos and whatnot from my achievement lists?
- RudeTurnip, on 07/18/2008, -0/+15It's new for this update. This would be a pretty good reason to upgrade the current 20 gig HD on my system to a bigger one.
- deaftly, on 07/18/2008, -4/+15smarch 32nd
- petard, on 07/18/2008, -3/+14This looks like the XMB? Really? I don't think it looks ANYTHING like the XMB.
- nurriz, on 07/18/2008, -0/+10I just picked up an Elite and I'm excited over this update. It looks sleek and streamlined. Excited to see how it works out first hand.
Considering the play from HDD feature I'm pretty happy I went for the Elite and the 120GB drive. - Hockey13, on 07/18/2008, -4/+14Wow. Could you maybe have found a more obnoxious way of answering the guy's question?
Not all of us have the time/patience to "research" e3. - OgonGuitarist, on 07/18/2008, -1/+10Ripping games to the HD is pretty intriguing to me - not just for convenience, better load times, or less stress on the system, but I wonder if hackers will take advantage of the feature and figure out a way to launch a game from the HD without needing to verify if the disc is in the system.
- Kazbaeden, on 07/18/2008, -0/+9Are you listening to yourself? "I'm too HARDCORE for this menu interface!" WTF is wrong with you? What exactly do you need in a menu, to satisfy your EXTREME cravings?
- doshindude, on 07/18/2008, -15/+23Did you even WATCH e3 or research it? This fall.
- gn0stik, on 07/18/2008, -0/+8I can't wait for the netflix thing. Seriously, that is badass, as someone who is already a netflix subscriber and a gold member, this is awesome.
- duke_nate, on 07/18/2008, -2/+9"Playing games from the hard drive will work fine for multi-disc games; in fact, you can pick which discs you want to rip (for example, we're superstitious and we'd only rip odd-numbered discs). "
.
Did I completely miss this before, or is ripping the games to the HD starting with this update? - catfoodgood, on 07/18/2008, -2/+9MS doesn't give you alot of stuff for free, so I'll take what I can get. I like that they have looked at the competitors and picked the pieces that they liked. Sometimes evolution works better for software than revolution does.
- Strabo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+7Ripping games to HD so there are no loading times on the games you play most sounds like it's for hardcore gamers rather than kids to me
- PedleZelnip, on 07/19/2008, -1/+8You need the disc in the drive to prevent piracy. Say then otherwise people could do things like buy a disc, put it into one 360, rip it, start the game up, pop the disc, then do the same thing on another 360 thus creating multiple copies running at the same time.
- Coffeedemon, on 07/18/2008, -4/+11Or the Vista "switch between windows" view.
- vault, on 07/18/2008, -3/+9Is watching and researching e3 something to be proud of? I wouldn't have even known it was happening if not for digg.
- Hockey13, on 07/18/2008, -1/+7Interestingly enough, this time warp just opened up next to me and a history book from the 23rd century titled "How the World Just, Like, Federated" popped out of it.
Think this might be a coincidence? - piratearggghhh, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6What does a menu system have anything to do with hardcore gamers? The games and everything are still the same.
- deaftly, on 07/18/2008, -3/+8Looks awesome, def kicks the ***** out of the other guys interfaces. That little xbox logo is just sweet. Blades are still included if you hit the guide button if you still want to use the current interface also.
- Mr_Lyle, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5The blade system is cool but the problem with it is that it doesn't scale very well. It doesn't seem like that would be a big deal but it's a problem when they want to add new blades. It just doesn't work once you try to add say, the new Netflix blade for example. They're adding a couple more other than the Netflix section as well and it just gets to a point where the unused blades take too much real estate on the left and right sides of the screen. With all the new features they're adding, they basically had no choice but to redesign the dashboard. Seeing as how the in-game dash is still blades, you kinda get the feeling they didn't really want to get rid of it.

Check it out, that looks pretty killer with the backdrop. - JudgeMonkey, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Yeah, but could someone mention this to Sony please? I tried a demo of that stardust game to see if I wanted to get it to try out some trophies, but the stupid thing is stuck in my trophy list still.
If they were copying Microsoft's idea, you'd think they'd have gone with the improved version. - SparQy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Watch the developer walkthrough video at the bottom of the page.
- Goallie11, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Can't wait!
- Hydroxyl, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6You are a retard, my good sir.
This is so they add features and don't use up everything they can display on the screen. Keep in mind some gamers do play in 480i still.
And the disc issue is just to have the game in the drive to prove you own it, it doesn't spin the disc outside of to check what game it is. - Kazbaeden, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5There are many hacks to buy a harddrive and put it in your enclosure. Google is your friend.
- estvir, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5And than released a whole new version with this update included for free and the new system would appear to cost less but once you add up everything it'd end up costing more.
Apple also would only let you use 3 controllers, why? Who knows, but that's what you do when you use an Apple product, you use it their way. - lcmatt, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Old troll attempt is boring.
- vagrantwade, on 07/18/2008, -2/+7I'm sure if I one day waked up and decide to stop using torrents for my movie needs, I will thoroughly enjoy all of the downloadable video content on this gen of consoles. But really, the new dash looks clean, I like it. And these avatars looks infinitely more mature than Miis.
- gn0stik, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4It WAS innovative, these Miis had ARMS and HANDS!!! No other mii has ever done that before! I wonder what the PS3's Miis will look like...
- voomfoo, on 07/18/2008, -2/+6the netflix is streamed and you put the games on the xbox when you play them. i think i'll be fine with the 20gb hardrive i got at launch. the games on hardrive thing sounds weird but i think you only put the games you play alot or maybe its only the current game.
- JudgeMonkey, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Yeah, that's what I thought at first too, but as folks said, the disk must be in. Microsoft knows damn well it can't trust ya'll.
- cruzer2727, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4So you're going to turn down 8 player chat and netflix streams, and new party system, and ripping games to the harddrive? Sucks for you.
- DarkTrancer, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Story of your life
- tumbleweed05, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4I just picked up an Elite 2 weeks ago. Definitely recommend it.
- Rumdizzled, on 07/18/2008, -5/+9Great. The whole mii thing is rather silly, though. Now maybe they can fix the broken H3 ranking system.
- Sornos, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Read here. It'll explain everything.
http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=144 ... - surasshu, on 07/18/2008, -1/+5I love how the guy called it innovative! :D
- ronaldmonster, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4I have a feeling this can be done better in execution when it rolls out than pictures or videos.
- Dalrek, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3You can choose to keep your gamercard if you don't like the avatar thing. Hurray for the choice!
- PedleZelnip, on 07/19/2008, -1/+4Care to elaborate?
- Shaflugi, on 07/19/2008, -1/+4Really? I thought it looked like a mix between the 3D flip in Vista and Windows Media Center. Wait, Vista and Windows Media Center are made by microsoft! How 'bout that
- DragonForce4, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3two bricks?
wat - Strabo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3You need to have the disc in the drive to verify you own it. But the loading times are gone
- VVCephei, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Hahaha! Hey everybody! Aserer511 made a RROD Joke! Hahaha.
Aren't you Clever. - Ub3rg33k, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3From what I can find, it seems you can only hack non-MS drives to recognize 120GB of drive space, regardless of the size of the drive used. I'm still a little fearful of the RRoD, but most people I know seem to be ok with customer service and the replacements they've been getting.
An Elite plus a Gamefly subscription might be in my future... - snoogit, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Add another Zero to that deaftly, and call it "Puma" or something.
- HolyChimp, on 07/19/2008, -1/+4You never owned the first Xbox then? Or the Dreamcast? Both had awful music interfaces, specially since the DC couldn't rip CDs.
