- chocobomog, on 05/28/2008, -1/+102Would you kindly not make a direct sequel to this game and instead make another engrossing story that is worth telling? Don't think "We need to make a Bioshock sequel, lets come up with a story", instead think "what is a great story we can tell" and if it somehow relates to Bioshock then so be it!
- rjc5056, on 05/28/2008, -0/+56All of these problems will be laughably small if EA takes the helm.
Bioshock 2: Now for every platform including Wii, DS, PSP, NGage, and downloadable on select AT&T phones such as the RAZR v7. Family mode settings allow for easy blocking of all blood, profanity and dystopian themes. Harvesting of Adam will no longer be a choice, but replaced by the less objectionable "politely requesting Adam." Gameplay has been reduced to 8 hours but a completely flacid and shallow multiplayer with 2 game modes has been added to justify the still $60 price tag. While players start off with a wrench and pistol, better weapons and upgrades will now be available through the many in-game vending machines which are now connected directly to x-box live and dispense via Microsoft Points. Just like the real world!!! - Eslamicolt3, on 05/28/2008, -0/+21That mentality is how Pixar has grown to be the beacon of creativity that it is.
- inactive, on 05/28/2008, -1/+19A prequel is really the only option since the game has a very clear ending.
- paranoiabacon, on 05/28/2008, -0/+16This is how every franchise should work their *****. Well done.
- limewolf, on 05/28/2008, -0/+16Not using awful copy protection / online activation on the PC version would be a good start.
- Falldog, on 05/28/2008, -0/+15For me what made Bioshock fun was the atmosphere (I thought the rest of the gameplay was pretty straight forward fps type stuff) That's easily something that can be translated to a different game without trying to tie it into Bioshock for no reason.
- DeathJux, on 05/28/2008, -0/+14You guys realize that this sort of thinking is crazy for most executives, though, right? They think "Well, that last game we made was a big hit, and brought in a lot of money, so we should use the name-recognition to guarantee huge sales on this next one."
Hopefully the guys at this studio are different, but most places take safe bets whenever possible. - cyraxible, on 05/28/2008, -1/+13I would prefer a prequel rather than a direct sequel. Maybe an exploration of the civil war?
- paranoiabacon, on 05/28/2008, -0/+12I love how the author cites FFVII as the game that caused people to expect the final villain to never truly be the final villain despite the fact that (popular) games have been doing that for a long damn time. FFVI had it, Chrono Trigger had it, it's been that way ever since, oh i dunno, books have been around.
- Eslamicolt3, on 05/28/2008, -1/+11Lets hope this is closer to Toy Story 2 than Ice Age 2
- fasda, on 05/28/2008, -0/+9I don't think rapture could hold together for more then a couple months after the first game ends it was already falling to pieces.
- MorphineJim, on 05/28/2008, -0/+9Yeah, but millions more people know FFVII than Chrono Trigger, so the point still stands. Since FFVII, people came to expect it, because that game was played by a load more people.
- junk, on 05/28/2008, -0/+9The article is insulting. "Hey you guys made an amazing game that I worship, therefore I have no confidence you can make another game that will be any good." Where's the logic in that?
By the way Ken Levine made System Shock 2, which is considered one of the greatest FPS games ever, I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt here. - Zarokima, on 05/28/2008, -0/+8Indeed. Though gameplay was really good, the storytelling and atmosphere were (and probably still are) unparalleled.
Also, there was some interesting AI. After a fight with a Big Daddy I hid behind a counter waiting for an approaching splicer so I could bash his face in, but he decided to take a detour to the proximity mine the Big Daddy had thrown out. His last words were "Ooh, what's this?" - suntzusputnik, on 05/28/2008, -0/+8"In a most ironic twist, however, I can't help but feel that what happened to Andrew Ryan's Rapture will, in turn, happen to Ken Levine's BioShock."
well put - rnlmedia, on 05/28/2008, -0/+8Less linear? You couldn't get a more linear game than Bioshock.
- carpespasm, on 05/28/2008, -0/+7or a sequel set in parallel from a different perspective (Ender's Shadow), or a sequel set in the future far enough that the new characters have lost knowledge of the original's era (Zelda).
- Magnus150, on 05/28/2008, -1/+7I wouldn't mind the title Bioshock 2, for name recognition purposes, but PLEASE make a new storyline. If it has the same type of storyline and theme, great. But new story please!
- Abomonog, on 05/28/2008, -0/+6You actually hit it more on the spot than anyone. The story was good, the decor was great, and the gameplay was a fairly original take on FPS. But in the end it was the AI behavior that made Bioshock a seller for me. That a splicer could leave a room and return later and notice changes made in the room was absolutely wicked.
- fugazied, on 05/28/2008, -0/+6A Bioshock sequel would do as well as the Matrix 2. The amazing part of bioshock was the first realisation of the storyline and what had happened to the society. Just like the amazing part of the matrix was the blue/red pill and realizing it was all a virtual reality. Once thats out of the bag, further extension of that storyline doesn't have the same impact.
- paranoiabacon, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5Even if you choose to kill the little sisters, because of Jack's muscular acceleration, he'd be dead within a matter of a few years. He's almost definitely not going to be returning.
- malex, on 05/28/2008, -1/+6WOULD YA KYNDLY FOLLOW DA ARROW TO DA NEXT OBJECTIVE.
- Shootfast, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5Finally a new release for my N-Gage!! The scene has been bleak of late... :(
- Scrappy1850, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5there were 2 endings to HL:1
- chuckiej, on 05/28/2008, -1/+6Many games and stories can easily have great sequels and they are just plain mishandled. In Bioshock's case I fear this author is right. Magic cannot be bottled. A prequel has a better chance, I think but they have to come up with a reason beyond the story we learned in the first game for the twists and turns in the new plot. And there can't really be two endings, right?
- Loornadune, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4Asking a great majority of my friends that play games, their first was FF VII. That's the point and case for most people knowing the most about it, as it's 'their favorite final fantasy or game evar'.
- Abomonog, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4I agree there. Bioshock almost died because of it and the cracked version still gives better overall performance than the legit version.
Buy it, don't bother opening the box, just put it on the shelf and grab the skullptura version from TPB. You get a 10 to 20 percent framerate increase easy. - allahuakbar, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4It was all a virtual reality?!! Whoa...
- sirbeta, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4Back when I was first getting into the PSX versions of Final Fantasy (I was a late bloomer) - I played through all of 8 before I even saw anything from 7. When I started 7, all I could think of was how awful the graphics were, but the story sucked me in deep. To be frank in terms of depth, I would have a hard time choosing which one had more. The "problem" with 7 was more the fact that there is a whole lot of mystery behind everything, but with 8 it's revealed in a much simpler way.
Still dugg you up though. FF8 was a fantastic rival in quality to 7. It's really minor differences that set the two apart for everyone. - heresy_fnord, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4Because you are wrong.
- theaceoffire, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4Why do we have NO faith in the creators anymore?
They make all kinds of great games... but they are somehow retarded at making a sequel? Yeah we are all worried that they will ***** it up, but on the other hand they may hit another home run. - xdevit, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4If you completed the game evil then a sequel won't be that hard to continue the story (no longer undersea). If you saved the little sisters then the story is TOTALLY over. I just can't see how you could continue the story unless it was you become that little sister.
- DeathJux, on 05/28/2008, -2/+5Your opinion will undoubtedly be unpopular, due to the rabid fanboy-ism surrounding FFVII, but I too enjoyed FFVIII more than FFVII, though the latter still holds a special place in my heart.
- raynar, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3because prequels worked out so well for Starwars...
- theaceoffire, on 05/28/2008, -1/+4Why SHOULDN'T they have a sequel? Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?
- rjc5056, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2Good points. I was obviously exaggerating for comedic effect but this nonsense with Battlefield: Bad Company and the constant imperialistic acquisition still puts them on my ***** list.
- Arowin, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3Dugg for one of the best lines in a review I've read in a long time:
"In a most ironic twist, however, I can't help but feel that what happened to Andrew Ryan's Rapture will, in turn, happen to Ken Levine's BioShock." - maxsunset, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2While I humor your comment, I honestly don't think EA is all that bad anymore. They are doing a great job of taking risks and releasing original IP's lately (Army of Two, Skate, Mirror's Edge...), along with the whoring out of the tried and true. It also seems they're getting better at deciding which platforms are appropriate to use for any given franchise, like when they axed the PC version of madden, which likely led to more development time for the primary platforms, the consoles, and thus led to better quality of the game (I dont know for sure because I dont play madden, but you get my point).
- YourDoom123, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2I would agree except that I couldn't connect to squall in any way... he came off as a first-rate *****... i mean, i understand his messed up childhood and all, but the other characters went through the exact same thing and they didn't turn out so messed up. Cloud... he had his problems, but that was half the story in ffvii... The story seemed deeper in ffvii to me simply because most of the major details are all inferential instead of explicit. It takes more thought to understand ffvii than ffvii (arguable i know since no one really knows who ultimecia is)
- SuperVepr308, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2The ending I had left itself open for more storytelling (the Russian sub). Still, something tells me a prequel would work better. I am also cool if they scrap the idea and leave the first one the ***** alone.
- paranoiabacon, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2I don't think it would make any sense to confine it to any one era in Rapture history. It could look at the civil war or do an alternative perspective or examine a possible dystopian future. The developers probably have plenty of ideas.
- Enochrewt, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2Seeing BioShock turn into the next Tony Hawk franchise would be extremely troubling.
- spwpi10, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2To me FFX had an amazing storyline, I really enjoyed it. I love most of the FF's but most of them have the nations at war storyline, like FFXII, and FFX just seemed so different to me.
- frygar, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2If 2K could come up with something as ground-breaking and magnanimous as BioShock, I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt they're going to botch up the sequel. These aren't some kids working on this; they know they set the bar, and they know their audience is eagerly anticipating this sequel. Think about it for a second, people. It's in good hands.
- wolfofwar, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3Do you enjoy being so frequently wrong?
- punkcat, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2i thought the company said prequel not sequel.
- Tagskill, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2Dont forget about Kirby's dreamland.......King dedede actually helps you too.
- sandersdamnit, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2***** spider splicers, I really don't want to take pictures of them. i really just want to blow them right back to hellwhere they came from.
- inactive, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2The pitfall? That it won't be as good as the first. Welcome to the world of making a blockbuster hit.
