- firefox15, on 10/10/2007, -35/+157I think I hear Sony laughing. . . .
- iluvatar, on 10/10/2007, -41/+113so ship it on two discs... i don't think the extra nickel in manufacturing costs is going to kill them.
- evozero, on 10/10/2007, -7/+77i have a god of war 2 disc image sitting on my computer, and it's over 7gb. if GoW2 uses that much space, wouldn't it be safe to assume that a machine that laps the ps2 several times in hardware performance might need a higher capacity disc option?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -22/+86This is only going to become a bigger and bigger problem. Hopefully developers will begin making seperate versions of cross-platform games so PS3 owners won't also be limited.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -9/+73Multiple discs work for some games. Not so much for others. Depending on how the game is structured, it may not work for PGR. Just as it wouldn't work for a GTA game. Switching discs once or twice during an entire game, while not ideal, isn't really that big a deal. But when you have open worlds, where you go back and forth between areas at will and frequently, it just isn't an option. You don't want players having to get up to swap discs every five minutes.
- jackpot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+66I'm surprised they're complaining. Now marketing has an excuse to limit the number of tracks available out of the box and have more marketplace content to charge for.
- SergeantRamRod, on 10/10/2007, -47/+104Yeah, because forum posts are always full of the truth and everybody who says they are a "staffer" really is

"microsoft blu-ray drive" - samdu, on 10/10/2007, -8/+51Blu-Ray/PS3 advocates won't have to use this as ammo for years to come. As time passes, more and more 360 games are going to run into this. Blue Dragon was the first. Rockstar is on record as having issues getting GTA IV onto a DVD-9. And this is only the second year of availability for the 360. Games are only going to get bigger and more expansive.
- davidjunit, on 10/10/2007, -19/+61If that's the case then they need to:
1) Stop abusing the use of pre-rendered videos
2) Stop abusing the use of pre-rendered videos
3) Stop being lazy and program real-time cut scenes
I just don't believe that textures, code, and even compressed music could take up more than 8.5GBs in a racing game. - Jabjabs, on 10/10/2007, -9/+45The person who posted it is an employee of Bizarre creations they have it listed just under their avatar that this came from, this is straight from BC themselves on their own website, nothing suspect about this I'm glad to say so it's not rumor. The Ps3 Blu Ray nuts are going to use this as ammo for years to come, I'm not to happy about that one at all. :(
- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -7/+42and there's the rub, the 360 doesn't have a hdd as standard either.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -8/+42If Microsoft would've used a HD disk format in 2005 the 360 would've cost about $3000.
- DreamVsPs2, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37It's MS fault. They are the ones who decided to have a SKU ( Core system) without a Hard Drive. If all 360's had a HDD, this would not be a problem.
Also, Blue Dragon is on 3 DVD's so it's not just one game. - bhattsan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33Yes, I also have a tendency to hear corporations laughing too
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30I doubt we'll see Microsoft making HD-DVD standard in all their 360 consoles at any point, especially not releasing games in HD-DVD. They'd probably have a rebellion on their hands from current 360 owners since they'd be effectively making existing consoles obsolete.
- Yonson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28For everyone trying to call BS on this, RTFA.
The article links to the official Bizarre Creations forum where the quote is stated by a staff member (it says Bizarre staff under his avatar). - dtrinh, on 10/10/2007, -11/+37Not to get pretentious, but this is a textbook example of rushing to market without concerns about scalability. Microsoft suffered when they launched without bundled-in WiFi (even the Wii has it, and the 360's adapter for wireless is almost half the price of a Wii); and now that the market is starting to demand more of its games, the DVD drives aren't going to cut it.
Regardless, not to buy into fanboy hype here, but the 360 is seriously hurting. Maybe launching with default HD-DVD/DVD drives from now-on would solve the problem ... but that's going to piss off an awful lot of people. - psychoace, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Oblivion has crappy low res textures.
- derkmerkin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25the xbox extras are download only buddy, the initial release will be the exact same. if anything the ps3 version will probably have better sound since R* wont have to worry about compressing everything down to fit it dvd 9
- dvsbastard, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24Although in most cases I would agree, this is the forum of the official developers website (http://www.bizarrecreations.com/) so I have no reason to believe this is inaccurate.
Many developers now regularly interact with the gaming community through forums, and I have the utmost respect for developers who do this. - Nobiting, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23It's a failing format?
- panzergeist, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21@tehpwnrate
This very thing was addressed by BC as well. They stated that going multi-disc isn't a good idea, especially because of multiplayer.
Look, I won't try to rub it in that us Blu-ray media for games advocates were right. Well, not much. But I don't think we'd feel as smug if it weren't for the fact that we were openly berated for believing that games would need higher capacity formats moving forward. If you look back at the history of video games, this just makes sense. - joe90210, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22that's not very practical thing to do in order to provide night tracks.
"You have selected play at night, please insert Disc 2" - Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -10/+28As much as I think Microsoft was stupid for sticking with DVD9 only, I'm gonna have to Digg you down for using the old "M$" cliche. It's basically automatic.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Let's go back to CARTRIDGES!
- ridv34, on 10/10/2007, -10/+26I love how when something bad is said about the 360, fanboys are quick to place the blame somewhere other than the fact that the system was obviously rushed. (i.e. crappy programming skills) C'mon, these guys have done video games before, they know what they are doing. Wake up and smell the coffee.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20They need some dynamic lighting. Baking the light into textures is the problem.
- catharz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16And not a great deal of variety in them.
All the dungeons use the same textures over and over again. - CReyes4182, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Actually Rockstar was complaining about disc space from the begging. Why do you think theres only one city? If you look at GTAs track record they always try to expand the "playground". The original concept of GTA4 didn't fit on a DVD. The game was made smaller and things where compressed and as a result 360 owners get the "full experience" through DLC and PS3 owners get sloppy port seconds.
- philhatesyou, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Since you're so damned good, why don't you go tell em how to fix it?
- spyraled, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Quite frequently with movies actually. Sometimes they'll have standard mode on one side and wide screen on the other.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Yeah. The same people who scream "OMG! Forza is 20,000X better than Gran Turismo" are now blaming this on sloppy programming like the guys don't know how to make a game.
Is objectivity really THAT hard to attain? I know people love their 360s, but can't they look at this kind of stuff in a balance perspective? - dizzydigg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Great - expect to pay more for downloadable content....
- omygroin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19and this is why MGS4 will not come to 360 that easily. kojima wants 50 gig dual layer blu ray and he still says its not enough
- JamesWilson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15http://scene.org
Game companies should hire people who make demos.. they know how to use some file space. ;) - Kr4t05, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Ack... Seems that the comments don't branch down another level.
@CReyes -- This is where console gaming reaches the end of it's convenience. Advocates of console gaming point out that one of the best things about having a console is the guarantee of buying one system every 5 or 7 years and having all games work no questions asked. Having to buy and install additional hardware makes it just like PC gaming. Not that I'm complaining; I've been a happy PC gamer for awhile. - xino, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Excellent point. I suppose the only other option for those games would be ship with extra discs and install some of the game to the hard drive. While it would solve that problem, you would run into space issues.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I'm sure you would have said that when the consoles first switched from CD to DVD as well. Stop being stupid, there are plenty of advantages to having more disc space. Good programming doesn't magically make games small without other repercussions.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Please insert disc 2 for checkeredflag.bmp
- miglaugh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Welcome to 10 minute loading times in that case.
- LiquidChimera, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Supposedly Killzone 2 is also 100% dynamic lighting
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Are they tweaking the PS3 version for use on a Blu-Ray disc or what?
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You win this thread sir
- Zoxy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13They wouldn't because PC games download a part of the game onto the HDD so they don't have to worry about it.
- psychoace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11a. it's 8.5gig's of data b.that would require a hard drive which Microsoft opted not to do.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Go even farther back... I remember when you had to make fire with sticks and dinosaurs were everywhere.
- macromorgan, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19Now we know what "exclusive downloadable content" is. It's the crap that fits on a Blu-Ray, but not on a DVD.
- Travisty2012, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Go farther back... I remember getting Star Craft on like 37 floppies...
- cannabinemsi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13strange somehow how everybody here seems to have awesome programming skills and know how to fit a game on only one disc. don't you think the people at bizarre know exactly what they are doing?
the "i call *****" people really gave me a laugh though. obviously not capable of following a link and reading one forum page... -
