- crashingechelon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Back in the day I use to get a bunch of Beta's for PS2 games, the most fun being Socom 2. That game had such odd bugs in it that made it really fun to play. So companies releasing betas isn't a new thing, they've been on PC's, PS2, and PSP for as long as I can remember. I think it's a good idea for them to get all the multiplayer data and stuff they need to make sure the online mode works great on launch.

Obviously they think multiplayer data on server loads and play balance is important. Just because they haven't done it in the past shouldn't mean they can't do it now.

Engineer: "Guys, we'd really like to get some info on how our servers are going to handle the load when this thing goes live."
Programmer: "I wouldn't mind finding out if the rocket launchers will throw off the game's balance. Maybe we should have a multiplayer beta to gather some info."

- Lou3000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My guess is that these aren't so much code betas like programmers and OS testers are used to. These multiplayer betas probably have to be pretty bug-free for MSFT to allow them through the marketplace.
I think the whole point is to 1. Test the game on a mass scale. While Gears wasn't beta tested, if anyone played it on launch day, the system of getting into games was horrible with a full load. They later fixed that. You never know what exploits are going to be used or how people are going to use multiplayer systems. 2. I agree with hollismb, multiplayer games are a whole new breed of game. If there is a sniper rifle in a certain place, it could potentially completely ruin a map. They want to know how people are playing a map.
However, this COD4 beta seems essentially finished, they may edit some of the other factors afterwards such as weapon power, weapon recoil, perk performance, etc. For instance, I'm in the beta, and I think the pistol is a tad weak.
