- PacoDG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+47I have to agree, this is one game that no one should be looking at a FAQ or reading anything on it, it is one of the few games I can say that. It is all about exploring and learning how your actions will affect you later. It is a single player game that relies on its replay value in the choices you make.
- zulfy26, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27Bioshock is the best game I've played this year. Hands down.
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24I've done both ways and felt that saving them was more rewarding in the end in many more aspects than just ADAM.
- evilevil, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18SOMEBODY DOESNT KNOW HOW TO MAKE A ***** GRAPH
please go back to high school
instead of making me scratch my head trying to make sense of this nonsense - MrFisty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Let's hear it for needless graphs! What's wrong with saying "If you harvest, you'll get 1000 Adam, if you rescue you'll get 1500"?
- h3llscaper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Talk about a huge ***** move right here. >:0
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Eh, I believe the replay value of this game is low. I won't want to replay it just to see how things would have turned out if I had killed all the little sisters. That's not saying I won't replay this game ;).
- JudgeMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Some of the better plasmids and tonics only come from saving.
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9All he's saying is it balances out, neutral, doesn't matter in the end.
- MrFisty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9"Eh, I believe the replay value of this game is low. I won't want to replay it just to see how things would have turned out if I had killed all the little sisters. That's not saying I won't replay this game ;)."
Make up your mind already. - Buckiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I played through the first time being really careful to check every part of the map, conserve my ammo etc... ATM I have a lot of adam and dont really want to spend it.
Next go round I wont be giving a damn about my ammo and im gonna have some more fun with more firepower. - TheDarkLordXenu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8This really is one aspect of the game that bothered me. It's easy (morally) to save them, so I always assumed there would be a pretty big downside to being the nice guy. As it turns out though, it's BETTER to be the nice guy.
And for the record, even before I played the game I always knew I would "save" them. - debuggercll, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Your e-penis must be huge.
- Taylor--, on 10/10/2007, -2/+71 gives 2 achievements, 1 only gives 1 achievement. Obvious choice for 360 users
- Whackly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Many of the other big releases were relatively lame. Two World's reviews weren't great. Don't forget, Bioshock is only what people are talking about NOW. Soon it will be HALO3, Mass Effect, Garage Band, GH3, SMGalaxy, etc. It was a good move, whether planned this way or not, for Bioshock to be released now. It gets an early start in sales and gets to carry the end of the summer all by itself while everyone else polishes their big guns for the holiday battle.
- BobTheChainsaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't understand the chart.
- bulgingbritches, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm saving them the first time, and strangling their demonic "no no nonono" asses the next time.
- JustinPM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Or because it's a good game with a decent story?
- Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Garage Band? Apple is porting it to the Xbox 360?
- jimmy72, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I miss Descent. Great game.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3you were probly playing on the easiest difficulty and using a guide aswell.
- Fetttson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What?
- Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I only buy games for achievements honestly. Otherwise I'd own a lot more PC+wii+ps3 games. I need achievements for some reason. It's a psychological thing. I mean I bought a Wii, and didn't buy a single game for it because of ACHIEVEMENTS. Damnit.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think they are trying to make up for the short shrift made of its predecessors. I mean, System Shock (and its antecedents the Ultima Underworlds) was phenomenally superior to the simplistic run 'n gun games that were out at the time. You can see how 2K lifted the basic game mechanics wholesale from System Shock 2, almost without variation (the funky radio instead of the PDA being the most egregious shoehorning example). I find Bioshock lacked a certain dread atmosphere that System Shock had, though.
- slyzxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i`m doing both here and there cause u need the adams and well be honest you know you wanna save em. as for the guy waaay above shut up about the replay value u know you`ll be back playing it bcause this is the 10 perfect game. To be honest i`ve only noticed 1 glitch.
- DoomMusic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was probably playing it on Normal without touching any online help or guide book. I probably had 9 First Aid kits, 9 EVE Hypos, and $500 (max) through 90% of the game. I probably think that you shouldn't make assumptions about my gaming experience.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Imagine that. A guy who is a Sepultura fan is a *****. Never would have imagined it.
- Whackly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have to agree with Jimmy72 on this one. There were plenty of decent games for those willing to either look or branch out a bit. Also "Bioshock wasn't released before all those other games..." is a false statement because.... yeah it was. I think what you might have been trying to say is that it wasn't intentionally planned for a release to beat those other games (hence my "whether planned this way or not comment"). If that is what you meant why didn't you say that?
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm not even done with the game yet and it's already pretty evident that the game will be completely different depending on if you choose rescue or harvest. I fully plan on playing the game over again at least twice after I finish it this time (once on "hard", choosing the same course of action as I have this time, once choosing the other course of action.)
- Whackly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Doh... sorry. I meant Rock Band... which I presume you knew.
- Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm the opposite. If I don't read a guide I get frustrated and quit playing the game -- It ends up on ebay. This is particularly true in games with a lot of puzzle-solving involved, like Bioshock I guess.. It makes me loath the game.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The FPS genre has never been all that interesting. The initial setup was established pretty early and didn't change much. Shoot enemies, get better gun, shoot more enemies. So when the ability to move things to solve puzzles (Half life 2) or when you can use magic (plasmids in Bioshock) or when you can slow down time (Max Payne) it becomes a huge freakin' deal because it makes a marginal difference to what you can do in the game. Never mind that other genres of games are doing all kinds of fun stuff. People need their run and gun bore-fests.
You'll excuse me if I'm overly negative as the games like Mechwarrior and Decent which were more technical have all but disappeared. - ryllharu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I think you missed the point of the gameplay. Any difficulty above Easy makes it considerably harder to kill a Big Daddy without thinking it through first. Using the environment, setting up traps before you face them, knowing every inch of the battlefield before the first shot, all key in their defeat. There's very little run-and-gun tactics in Bioshock.
Even a large enough group of slicers can take you down if you're not paying attention. The game again encourages you to use the battlefield around you. Don't waste ammo when you can lure them into a pool of water and fry them all at once with only the smallest amount of EVE. Some of them can do a lot of damage to you in a very short time. Wasted Health (that you *need* to
fight Mr. B), wasted ammo.
Using the Vitapods can reduce the consequences of screwing up, but with the wasted ammo, lost health and lost EVE, it's only worth it to reload. You have to do it correctly the first time.
As for the story, it's that same loneliness induced by the metroid games. You're in a dystopian environment enemies everywhere, with only a few radio broadcasts and tapes as company.
Is it revolutionary? In most aspects, no. But it brought back a strategy element that hadn't been present in many FPS since Half-Life 2 (and even there only during those scripted parts) and has a moral dilemma that though seemingly trivial, rewards you in the end for doing the right thing. - Pr0v0st, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Try playing it with no upgrades.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1However you cant buy all of the upgrades if you dont harvest them all, so you cant get achievements for that if you save them.
Points wise you are way ahead for saving them though. - sweatyyeti, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Read the ***** article. This isn't about the moral choice. It's about how much adam you get from harvesting vs rescuing. You obviously don't play games so don't bother commenting. You have no idea what you're talking about.
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The big daddies aren't that bad, I usually just empty my grenade launcher into them, heck my 9 year old son has taken down more than one with a shotgun.
- madoc12349, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, the better tonics come from research.
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not everybody is an Achievement whore (though personally I am for sure)
- jimmy72, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I had it finished by Monday night. I saved the little sisters and got achievement. I just restarted last night and I'm going the other way. Harvesting and using more plasmid powers than guns. Telekinesis seems to be my weapon of choice this time around.
- Toast1185, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I never play games with achievements in mind. All I ever want to do is play a game and have fun
- Taylor--, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Ah, I honestly haven't played the game so I wouldn't have known :P . Also to Toast, I too never play a game for the achievements but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy unlocking them or going for them so long as its a fun game and I'm enjoying myself :)
- snoboarder1167, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0this game is pretty awsome, i havent finished it, but i think it would have a high replay value. i just cant beat the big daddies though....but the telekenesis (sp?) upgrade is awsome.
- Devotia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Really? I can't stand it. If i start reading the guide, I finish it and lose any interest in beating the game.
- modix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I agree with the original poster completely. The game creates a great environment, the art direction is fantastic, but overall the storyline told through tape recorders was dry and a little flat. The complete lack of other characters besides voices reeks of the bad days of FPS, and would be unacceptable in any other story based genre. The difficulty of the game plummets after you get a few gun upgrades and a wealth of ammo. Even on hard, I could take down the big daddies with 8 or so electical buck. With a couple cyclone traps in the way, perhaps a proximity mine: I didn't even take damage. The large amount of free ammo really doesn't force you to conserve your best stuff. there's not really any difficult regular enemies besides the Big Daddies, which you can fight on your own terms. Don't get me wrong, I've loved the game so far. But if you think this story and gameplay are heavily innovative, you need to start playing some other genres besides shooters. Even some of the most mediocre RPGs and strategy games have 10x more complicated upgrade paths and equip options, as well as much more comlicated battle tactics. With Bioshock, they just started adding some of the baseline tactics and planning necessary to make a game interesting, and I'm glad they did. The genre has needed a kick in the ass for a long time.

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Remember when Ars Technica posted things that were useful to at least someone?
- jimmy72, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I have to disagree. Forza 2 dropped at the end of May. I played that game until Bioshock dropped and I'm still playing it. Bioshock wasn't the only game released this summer that is worth playing. Shadowrun was fun for a while. Dirt is a good game. What about The Darkness?
