- justice7, on 10/23/2007, -27/+150Halo3 (total package) > Bioshock (total package)
Bioshock Single Player > Halo3 Single Player
Halo3 Multiplayer > Bioshock Nonexistant Multiplayer
Simple, eh? - stillasleep00, on 10/17/2007, -7/+76Orange Box....
- blaze03, on 10/23/2007, -9/+74When you compare two movies, you don't go:
Movie A was 30 minutes longer than Movie B
Movie A was $5 cheaper to watch than Movie B
Therefore Movie A > Movie B
BioShock was a breakthrough game and the better experience period. Halo 3 is a rehash of its two predecessors with much improved features.
BioShock wins GOTY. - arma, on 10/17/2007, -10/+69Orange Box > all
- raitchison, on 10/17/2007, -4/+58Argh I hate these needlessly multi page articles.
In any case IMO they are about equal, obviously Halo3 has the great multi player capabilities compared to Bioshocks nonexistent multi player.
OTOH Bioshock is simply in a league of it's own when it comes to single player. - whatthefu, on 10/15/2007, -8/+55Bioshock story (better crafted and more original) > Halo 3 story
Bioshock graphics > Halo 3 graphics
Halo 3 multiplayer > Bioshock no multiplayer
Halo 3 replayability (due to multiplayer) > Bioshock replayability
Bioshock new level of artistic storytelling for mainstream games > Halo 3's poorly fleshed out and overly-detailed universe
I say Bioshock; the game obviously was focused solely on one-player, and when one goes head-to-head in singleplayers with the two games, Bioshock wins outright. Halo 3 has multiplayer, but that's a given. They didn't have to change much of the formula from Halo 1 and 2; so if Halo 3 multiplayer isn't really anything new, why should it get game of the year? - 93TILL503, on 10/17/2007, -8/+47rent bioshock, buy halo3....
then buy the orange box and play portal. - ELCad, on 10/16/2007, -6/+37I've play 'em both and I vote for The Orange Box it was much better.
- zephyrTR, on 10/17/2007, -21/+51People keep saying Halo 3 is revolutionary if you know where to look - but then they don't tell you where to look. What's so amazing about it? If you 'get it', please give me some points on which I can firmly grasp, I'd like to be educated. To me, it looks like Halo 2.5, which was Halo 1.5 to begin with, so really it's Halo 1.8. It's the same game with improved graphics and weapon tweaks. Forge is cool, but that's way late to the table and also not really new in any way aside from having multiple people simultaneously editing a level.
- Matt174e, on 10/23/2007, -2/+32Master Chief is a splicer.
- justice7, on 10/13/2007, -9/+39Online Matchmaking Playlists, get in a group with friends.. and it finds you opponents of equal skill ratings.
Halo is Halo, hate it on it all you like, but its the 3rd iteration of the game. If you expected Halo3 to NOT be Halo, you've got to be kidding yourself. - blaze03, on 10/23/2007, -6/+35Many other great games didn't have multiplayer. Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy VII, God of War.
Since when are games required to have multiplayer? - Gonz037, on 10/15/2007, -8/+34I'd say Bioshocks biggest flaw is the nonexistent multiplayer. And the whole hacking thing with the pipes gets pretty tedious.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -20/+45The fanboyism of this game is on another level, so tired of hearing how great this mediocre game is.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/13/2007, -2/+25Game of the Year? We still have a long way before the end of the year. 4 Games I would like to add as nominees: Mass Effect, Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3 and Assassin's Creed.
- acu8509, on 10/23/2007, -3/+25Would you kindly...
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -26/+45Halo = More of the same, Halo 2.5
Bioshock = Innovation on many levels, and GOTY - grimstar, on 10/13/2007, -1/+20I'm going to go way off topic but...If there is any game that is revolutionary, it is Portal. I just wish it was longer.
- Enfilade, on 10/17/2007, -4/+22The whole point of Halo 3 is the multiplayer. Bioshock is one player. Comparing them is retarded.
- spyrochaete, on 10/14/2007, -4/+22Are you suggesting the quantity of interactive features is more important than the quality?
- modix, on 10/14/2007, -3/+20Would you give the Best Picture Oscar to the most popular movie of the year? Would you give the Pulitzer to J.K. Rowlings? Popularity rarely revolves around the best of a genre, normally its the lowest common denominator.
When people say something is "revolutionary", I think its their way of say it had a bunch of novel ideas that weren't just cut and paste from past greatest hits. For those of us who have been playing games for along time, seeing the same things over and over again sort of ruins the fun for alot of the "popular" games. We like seeing innovation, things we haven't seen before. It requires alot more effort to make games of idea; with new concepts for how to play the game.
If people hadn't have innovated in the past, Halo 3 wouldn't be the game it is. We need games like bioshock to make the games like Halo 3. Without the revolutionary ideas, there'd be no way of making the other everyday games as well. We feel that those that innovated the most deserve the prize. - NeoSporin, on 10/17/2007, -8/+24He said game of the year, not first to the bargain basket
- zephyrTR, on 10/17/2007, -5/+21Orange Box (whole package) > Halo 3 (whole package) + Bioshock (whole package)
Also, giving Halo 3 GOTY would be like giving the Oscars to Return of the Jedi Digitally Remastered.
Bioshock is something NEW so it remains in the running, however if you've played Systemshock you'll know that it's not THAT new. - Kappa00, on 10/13/2007, -4/+19 - multiplayer
- IceIX, on 10/13/2007, -6/+21Bioshock = System Shock
- mentor972, on 10/14/2007, -2/+16No, unless you're only about the multi-player. Bioshock's single player game kicked the crap out of Halo 3. The story was more creative, the graphics were better, and it was just a lot more interesting and fun overall.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/14/2007, -2/+16I agree Blaze. Bioshock not only had more substance, but it was unique. Halo 3 is good, but it's nothing that Halo 2 didn't do.
- swrostmore, on 10/13/2007, -13/+27Bioshock doesn't have fanboys. Bioshock wins.
- rowlodge, on 10/13/2007, -1/+15two different animals like apples and oranges, not a real question.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/17/2007, -0/+13You forgot sound. I'm calling shenanigans on their sound comparison. The gunfire effects at range in Halo 3 are far better than any game I have ever played. The way they handled distant gunshots amazes me after hundreds of online games. I know I'm a shameless Halo fanboy, but I'm trying to be objective here and point out that to me the realistic and imersive gun sounds are more important than dripping water.
Overall, I don't think that you can really "compare" the games and choose one that's "better" other than with personal preference. But GOTY last year was Oblivion, right? That game had incredible singleplayer and no multiplayer. - Remmiz, on 10/17/2007, -3/+16Portal without a doubt.
- justice7, on 10/15/2007, -21/+34Call of Duty 4 is on the way, i wouldnt start calling out GOTY just yet.
- adoggz, on 10/15/2007, -3/+16they aren't, but great multilayer leads to longer playability ,more bang for your buck.
- Juntistik, on 10/13/2007, -1/+14To be honest I'm more sick of Anti-halo fanboys then halo fanboys. I'm tired of hearing about the crappy graphics, I'm tired of hearing they're not creating anything new. It makes me think even if halo 3 WAS revolutionary and invented completely new features, people will still hate it just because its halo. Theres nothing Halo can do to stop from being ***** on by hardcore gamers. I also feel gamers refused to give it a chance, people play the game for 5 minutes and say it sucks even though they already decided it sucks before they even picked up a controller. Its whatever, I just had to get that out.
- heepajunk, on 10/14/2007, -2/+15Its not needless - they can fit in more ads that way!
- Shawn4168, on 10/18/2007, -0/+12It was a little short, but any longer and the main game could have gotten stale. However, the framework is in place now, and hopefully we're going to see some awesome custom levels developed now by the community.
- pegisys, on 10/13/2007, -1/+13In the case of Bioshock it does. besides maybe the saving/harvesting of little sisters there is not much else that makes it worth playing again
- Matteos, on 10/23/2007, -3/+14Unless you don't like playing with a bunch of crybaby, profane, 13yo...
- Anagrama, on 10/13/2007, -0/+11I'll admit it. I like both games. yes, Halo 3's multiplayer is fun and Bioshock is astounding from the storytelling side of things.
It's okay to like two different things. Honest. - bigdoof, on 10/14/2007, -3/+13Isn't Orange Box basically just games released years ago, plus a very short "episode," an even shorter puzzle game, and a rehashed multiplayer game? Don't get me wrong, I love Orange Box, but it fits your "Return of the Jedi Digitally Remastered" much better than Halo.
- ZachSka87, on 10/14/2007, -8/+18How the ^&@* did Halo 3 win in "Innovation" against Bioshock?
*shoots self at the stupidity of the common Microsoft lackey* - Gryfft, on 10/17/2007, -6/+16Also, ignoring the fanbase for a moment, Bungie has always been really dedicated to their community and really interested in creating fleshed-out universes for its titles. Look at it like the Star Wars movies: taken by themselves, there's a lot going on that has very little to do with the main plot, lots of creatures and languages and planets that don't jump out at you but are mentioned in passing. Halo's universe starts off as something of a ripoff of Alien. From there, though, Bungie created lots of sidestory that you don't get just by playing the game through beginning to end- you have to look at the details, read the books. There's lots of little details that you can find and enjoy, like for instance- when you kill Grunts with melee attacks, their backpacks pop off with a hiss and a burst of gas. If you're up on your Halo you know that you just destroyed the Grunt's breathing apparatus that contained methane. The Grunts have always been written as methane-breathers, but in Halo 3 you finally have their breathing apparatus destructible in a logical way consistent with the fiction. A tiny touch, yes, but one of many. Johnson's always got his cigar, a homage to Aliens. The Arbiter has lots of dialogue he mutters to himself regarding the Covenant he has left. For instance, the holographic projectors from which the Prophet of Truth spews propaganda are destructible, but since the Arbiter is Covenant, he knows how to use the technology, and simply turns 'em off whenever he sees them and has a minute when he's not getting shot at. The Marines have thousands of lines of dialogue, much of it absolutely hilarious. Same with the Grunts. The sound design is immaculate; projectiles make perfect sounds as they whiz past you from a distance; distant gunfire is slightly delayed and echoes in a beautifully ambient way. The water effects rival Bioshock's.
SPOILERS BELOW: The story draws you in emotionally. Johnson has been the original badass since he was first seen in Halo: Combat evolved. In Halo:CE you hated the ***** out of 343 Guilty Spark because he subjected you to the LIbrary (a building full of zombies.) When 343 GS kills Johnson, you are filled with righteous indignation and FINALLY get the chance to kick that little *****'s ass. Same thing with Cortana. When you're playing the game for the eighth time, Cortana's interruptions are annoying, but the first time through, it was amazing to experience her torment firsthand, and really motivated me to save her. Another little touch when you rescue her was that you didn't just push a button to get her out of the stasis field; you have to crack it open with a melee attack. Skulls, easter eggs, armor- all add to the single player's longevity. What's so great about Halo? The fact that it is a lovingly crafted game. It has a huge, idiotic fanbase who never think about half the crap I just talked about. Regardless of why the unwashed masses like Halo, Bungie made a great damn game. - inactive, on 10/13/2007, -1/+11BioShock is people.
- jonnyeh, on 10/17/2007, -2/+12Did you just say that Bioshock was of the same caliber as Snakes on a Plane?
- AllYourBase3, on 10/16/2007, -5/+15TF2 wins!
- Optimaximal, on 10/13/2007, -6/+15Infinite Replay Value is a statement on the same level as 'perfect' and '10/10'. It's entirely subjective, sensationalist and totally bollocks.
You wrote that post not because you'd *pick* Halo, rather because you already have.
Bioshock offered 3 different endings (albeit only slightly different) and 2 distinct methods of acquiring ADAM throughout the game (instantly gratifying evil or patient good). There is also distinct methods of play - guns or plasmids (or wrench 'n' tonics). You failed to mention these, so get dugg down. - CarzorStelatis, on 10/14/2007, -6/+15Neither. Orange Box ftw.
- RedHerringHack, on 10/17/2007, -3/+12I bet you are a big tetris fan.
- docbaily, on 10/13/2007, -17/+26I'm sure that I would have liked Halo 3 more if I was a fratdudebro.
- EmperorAwesome, on 10/13/2007, -2/+11Also, if you don't have a console, Bioshock wins by default.
