- anderzole, on 01/11/2008, -9/+147I wonder if Bill Gates actually plays any games on the xbox
- go123, on 01/11/2008, -18/+110Wow. I mean, I know he's like 'one of the richest men on the planet' and so therefore is a little detached from reality (i.e. he doesn't know the price of a pint of milk - he has people who do that for him) but this is madness.
PS3 has a failure rate of about 1%. Xbox 360 has a class-action lawsuit against it for massive RRoD failures. You decide who's being a little 'optimistic'... - slicecom, on 01/11/2008, -9/+87Even if not one more 360 breaks down for this entire generation of consoles, it will STILL be the least reliable console of this generation and possibly in history. 2 years and 16M consoles with a 33% fail rate will not just go away.
- tastypastry, on 01/11/2008, -11/+78That must explain why my cousin got the RRoD sent it in got it back and got the RRoD again. So far the new one they sent him back is doing okay but I'm waiting for the RRoD.
- dansmeek, on 01/11/2008, -38/+83if by reliable, he means, all of them will eventually fail with a RRoD, and this consistency is something that microsoft strives to achieve with all of our well designed phenomenal products.... then....
hehe, i had to, my first RRoD joke ever. i'm more into my ps3 now, but have had an xbox360 since a few months after launch.... never got a RRoD and i have the very first version (i've always kept it well ventilated). man, it's sad that there are so many fanboys that get more pleasure trolling a competing product than enjoying the system itself. both products are great, and the big reason i like the ps3 is simply -- my ps3 has HDMI while my Xbox doesn't. i'm sure if my xbox was a newer model (quieter and with HDMI) i'd like it more. and i've always liked playstations, and could care less whether it finished 4th place, or 1st place.
sorry off topic comment. - kiiwii, on 01/11/2008, -4/+38Maybe he means that you can rely on the fact that it will break?
- charlescheese, on 01/11/2008, -4/+33King Goonie AM MAD! King Goonie am CRY and bring irrelevant, incoherent, and false trollings to the threadz!
- gharding, on 01/11/2008, -2/+30Well, he didn't define what he meant by reliable. Maybe he meant you can rely on it breaking.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -2/+29even his pc won't play crysis
- smergs, on 01/11/2008, -12/+38I dugg you down because you just tried to use HDMI as your reason for liking the ps3 over the 360. That really puzzles me.
Is there something wrong with your component cables or connections? You should be able to get 720p 1080i and 1080p all over the component cables. I also wish my "close to" launch 360 had the HDMI port but it doesn't stop me from enjoying it. And I'm not trying to be a fanboy and say that there is anything wrong with the PS3 here. I just don't understand how the connection to the TV would make you like one over the other. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the PS3 over the 360, just give a better reason please. - walkingdogs, on 01/11/2008, -2/+28he can most likely afford the most high end pc... Thank you doctor obvious. But that has nothing to do with his smarts or him being a technophile and his tendency to play pc or xbox games
- charlescheese, on 01/11/2008, -3/+27If you had disc read errors, or that problem where the 360 scratches your discs, yes Microsoft DID leave you in the cold. Not only do they leave you to fend for yourself for a new copy of the discs that the 360 scratched, but they won't repair your console for free unless it RRoD's. Go read some of the threads out there where people's 360 broke and it wasn't an RRoD. There are STILL a lot of those people too who aren't covered by the 3 year RRoD warranty because their hardware failed in a different way.
- Abno, on 01/11/2008, -1/+24No it isn't. Bill Gates is saying the 360 is going to be the most reliable console, so why is it not valid for people to compare the reliability against the other consoles?
- Snuff99, on 01/11/2008, -15/+38The riches man in world can afford the best drugs and apparently he gettin some good *****.
- go123, on 01/11/2008, -2/+25Here's one source - http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Home/D3Q7G8S2?page=1
The high failure rates aren't just speculation. Microsoft specifically increased their warranty to three years to keep customers happy after analysts revealed the shocking stats. MS have made changes to recent models in an attempt to reduce heat production and increase reliability, but until someone does another analysis we won't know if that has really made a difference. - CraigJ, on 01/11/2008, -3/+25My Atari 2600 from 1979 still works just fine 28 years later. That's reliable.
- DutchMacUser, on 01/11/2008, -7/+29It is always the same. Microsoft builds junk and they then promise to fix the problems in the next release. Frankly I find it absurd that customers still fall for it. I say, zero tolerance for crap. There are better alternatives for most Microsoft products, OSX is better than Windows, PS3s and Wiis are more reliable than the XBox 360. To hell with MS!

- Ndiggnation, on 01/11/2008, -4/+24Or maybe I'll have fun playing the 10-12 good PS3 games I happen to own, while most of my 15-20 Wii games collect dust, other than Mario Galaxy..
- Typhoon2009, on 01/11/2008, -5/+25Very reliable ind-OH WHAT THE HELL I JUST GOT THE RROD!
- MiDri, on 01/11/2008, -0/+18parse error, line 1. Char 32 Expected ' found "
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -4/+22X-Box 360 would have to be around for twenty years with out another crash for that to be statistically possible. The Wii is obviously the most reliable next-gen console.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -7/+24The PS3 at wal-mart is always frozen.
- Andy.D, on 01/11/2008, -4/+20I love the 360, but it is nowhere near as reliable as my PS3. Ive had one Ps3 and 3 360s. ***** that.
- WorkingDead, on 01/11/2008, -16/+32My original XBox got the dirty disk error from the faulty Thompson DVD drive. No help. No replacement. Nothing. I canceled XBox Live, and haven't bought a single M$ product since. That incident even prompted my switch to Linux. I'm sure, i'm not the only one.
- pcpimpster, on 01/11/2008, -3/+18Adding that to my list of stupid things to-do next time at a wal-mart.
- petebot, on 01/11/2008, -8/+22I'm sure, you didn't need a comma, in that sentence.
- jacksons98, on 01/11/2008, -1/+14Dr. Peter Venkman: Whoa! Whoa! You can't park right here!
[looks and sees Stantz in the driver's seat]
Dr Ray Stantz: [gets out] Everybody can relax, I found the car. Needs some suspension work and shocks. Brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear-end.
Dr. Peter Venkman: How much?
Dr Ray Stantz: Only $4800.
[Venkman looks shocked]
Dr Ray Stantz: Also new rings, mufflers, a little wiring... - tendonut, on 01/11/2008, -4/+16Assuming he is talking about hardware reliability, as long as Nintendo is making consoles, no one will top their reliability. No one.
- MeatBiProduct, on 01/11/2008, -1/+132 8800GT's in SLI run it on medium at 42fps :)
- Zbug, on 01/11/2008, -1/+13Well, there was something about him being addicted to Guitar Hero, I think.
- Gryffydd, on 01/11/2008, -3/+15The only one who switched their computer to linux because their Microsoft game console got borked? You might be ;)
- satch777, on 01/11/2008, -3/+14"I believe OS/2 is destined to be the most important operating system, and possibly program, of all time. As the successor to DOS, which has over 10,000,000 systems in use, it creates incredible opportunities for everyone involved with PCs."
-- Bill Gates - OS/2 Programmer's Guide - fyreboltx, on 01/11/2008, -3/+13The RRoD isn't a problem... it's a feature by MS standards.
- dsmx, on 01/11/2008, -0/+10He can't, it's being repaired.
- Renton, on 01/11/2008, -3/+13I remember the first demo units could be crashed by holding in the start button.
- dscomeau, on 01/11/2008, -1/+112007 called and wants their flamebait back
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -0/+10And more importantly, (almost) all new Xbox 360's produced today has HDMI. Find a new argument Mr. OP.
- georgetds, on 01/11/2008, -4/+14I read the article, and I could swear that reliability is the goal, not a claim of past deeds.
"Our commitment is that it'll be the most reliable video game box out there. People really love the Xbox because of the content, but we have to make sure the hardware never stands in the way of that."
Give them some time to see if the meet that commitment or not. - Hoov, on 01/11/2008, -1/+11Lucky. I got mine 6 months after launch that I've been touting as a working system all along and then yesterday it goes all RRoD on me. Made me quite sad.
- Spelvin, on 01/11/2008, -0/+10Care to share the rest of your list pcpimp?
- rlahiff, on 01/11/2008, -2/+12@christbait quite possibly one of the dumbest comments i have ever read. congrats.
- eryximachus, on 01/11/2008, -1/+11Funny, I bought my PS3 a year ago and put it on my entertainment center. I haven't moved it since. Meanwhile, I use it to play games, watch movies, browse the web, and listen to music almost every day.
- WhereAmI, on 01/11/2008, -2/+12PS3 has very little failure rate. Most of the time its about some idiot that put duct tape over the vents:
http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=123215
And, even out of his own stupidity, he got a new PS3. - MeatBiProduct, on 01/11/2008, -1/+11so do radios from 60 years ago - i think the atari is made of the same stuff. plastic and low-tech.
- FoxOrian, on 01/11/2008, -0/+10The 33% fail rate is so damaging when you consider that this is 33% of all 360's that fail and become completely unplayable. Can't do a damn thing with it except send it off to repair. This 33% still doesn't cover usual defects like a problematic disc drive, busted power supply, etc. [Which reminds me, the first DS lite I bought actually had no microphone installed into it, go figure.]
- ryodoan, on 01/11/2008, -0/+9When the xbox was first released with the HDMI port some people did comparisons and you really could see the difference between HDMI and the component cables. The biggest difference was the contrast. The component cables looked washed out while with HDMI there was a greater range of Dark to light.
- wolfzombie, on 01/11/2008, -2/+11Agreed about the extra cables. I just moved over from Component to HDMI and it got rid of about 15 cables in my theater setup.
- ranthony, on 01/11/2008, -4/+13Buried for the obvious nature of the news that Gates promotes his own products. It's like saying that Steve Jobs thinks the iPhone is the best mobile phone on the market; or that President Bush thinks the war effort is worth the cost.
...This is news? Only because MicroSoft pays for it to be news. - feverjunk, on 01/11/2008, -3/+12Just last weekend I got my first red ring of death. It was really embarrassing, we had friends come over to play Rock Band. Game froze, rebooted and red ring of death.
