- mrk0, on 10/25/2007, -5/+56It was bad enough that they refused to engage a formal product recall and barely acknowledge that the Red Ring of Death problem was...A PROBLEM, but at the very least, they could release these new SKUs with CLEAR LABELING indicating they are indeed the new 65nm machines so people don't have to squint at serials and barcodes when they go to buy a new console.
- duerra, on 10/31/2007, -7/+49Well, I would like to personally thank all the users that suffered through the faulty batches of XBox 360s. It looks like the time may finally be approaching for me to get a media center set up, and experience some XBox 360 HD gaming goodness.
- AhrenBa, on 10/31/2007, -1/+34Well, a smaller CPU die size (65nm vs. 90nm) should mean less power consumption which ultimately means less overheating. Many speculate that overheating is what causes the RROD. However, RROD may in fact be caused by the GPU overheating, not the CPU.
- brianbennett, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Keep the size and get an HD-DVD drive in there.
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -2/+32I trust MS more than I do nerd rage. People were bitching about XP for years and then suddenly when Vista came out I had to listen to fond memories of XP's rocksteady overall performance.
The only thing nerd rage ever supports is nostalgia. It's too irrational to actually make a valid statement about technology. - Wisgary, on 10/31/2007, -1/+24So what are the chances for the Xbox I sent in yesterday (my third) coming back as a brand new 65nm model? I'm guessing zero to NO ***** CHANCE. I'll get a ***** refurb which will fail yet again in at best a few months, at worst as soon as I take it out of the god damn shipping box. Yes I am angry because I still haven't played Halo 3 and it cut me off in the middle of Bioshock.
- unknownsoldierX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Something like "This is the new Xbox, it won't break like the old version. Buy this one instead of the others, because we want those to sit on the shelf and never sell.
- lkmbrd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Agh, just bought an Elite.
- NobleArc, on 10/10/2007, -7/+28I don't think I'd like a slimmer version of the console. I love the look and form factor of the 360 as it is now. In my books, it's the nicest looking of the current ones out there.
- Protonz, on 10/31/2007, -4/+24What does this mean? Faster? Cheaper?
- earthtoandy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21NO! lets just concentrate on getting one that works in this form factor.
- AhrenBa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21For those who want a quick overview of which lots supposedly have the new chips:
2007-08-24 Team FDOU Lot No: 734.
So far only the Halo console has been reported to have the 65nm CPU, but some reports are coming in indicating that the Premiums may be shipping with them also. My advice. Wait until Lot. No. 735 to be sure. - YuriSakazaki, on 10/10/2007, -9/+28I'm sorry, extending the warranty on every 360 on the planet by 3 years isn't addressing the problem?
- 1337Einstein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Going by the title, the entire xbox would only be 65 nanometers wide. Which would make it understandable as to why they are leaking out.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -5/+20I'm getting tired of how Microsoft has tons of different options. I liked it when there were just two 360s to choose from core/premium. Now there's as many versions as Vista!!
why can't they just make one 360 with a 120gb hd, hd-dvd built in, and 65mm chips and stop making a core/premium/elite, and call it Xbox 360? - JettaMan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Do you have any proof that the GPU is going 65 nm early next year?
- mashw, on 10/31/2007, -0/+13The sinks were unable to compensate for the overheating..this will solve a hell of a lot of the problems.
- wizawuza, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15No need to thank us, it was my pleasure playing games I love for the past 22 months
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17It doesn't mean much of anything.. the old CPUs didn't overheat or fail. The new ones will be somewhat cooler, but only be a couple degrees. The consumer won't notice any difference.
But they use less silicon, so it might save MS some cash in the long run. - Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Those two cases have nothing to do with this. Firefox is free and Apple has a contract. Microsoft has been avoiding the problem on something people pay for (I don't even know how to relate this to the iPhone) in a public manner except when it seems they might risk the chance of a lawsuit.
- rikwakefield, on 10/31/2007, -2/+13Ouch. In the middle of Bioshock is harsh. I feel for you.
- profingersk8er, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16what makes everyone think the new 65nm process would solve all the on going hardware issues of current 360s? Yes the 65nm would run at lower temperature, but that doesn't mean all the problems (and other problems) would just suddenly disappear.
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Try Home Depot. I hear they carry spray paint.
- InitialDMP5, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13The problem isn't the CPU though, its the GPU. That is going 65nm early next year. Thats when the system will become much more stable, and might get rid of the RRoD forever.
- EnderTheThird, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I know the feeling. I just sold my original launch X360 to a friend after Halo 3 came out and bought a new one (I wanted HDMI for my HD DVDs). The DVD drive on my new one is a lot louder than my old one and it's still the 90nm version to boot! Damn! I wonder if I could get away with returning it to Best Buy for no reason in a month and buying a new one, heh.
- 0firefly0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Buried salty spammer.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Hmm... switch to a 65nm GPU to solve all the heat-related RRoD problems, then switch to a slimmer case to bring them all back again? No thanks!
- username9000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7are you in a 2'X2' room or something?
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7For the next couple of months you'll probably get old ones back. However MS aren't (afaik) making the old style parts any more, so once the current inventory of old parts runs out they'll start using Falcons.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yeah, iirc the most common guess for the RRoD problem is that the heat is causing the GPU to warp out of its slot (enjoying my high-jargon description? :P). However, a cooler-running CPU means that there will be slightly less heat buildup in the case to kill the GPU, so it's all good.
- mokkos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6how can I tell if it's from lot 734 or not? is it written on the retail box on the outside?
- mashw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+737% chance.
- Jumile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Me too. Last week. D'oh! :)
- Nassin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7um they like money?
- AhrenBa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6As of right now, the only ones that seem to supposedly have the 65nm chips are the Halo consoles. I am sure that will change though.
- lagoveride, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I have had my elite since it was released and i have never had any problems yet, but on the other hand if it does die the extended warranty microsoft has going will give me peice of mind
- rikwakefield, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Still using Windows 2000? Fail.
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6i bought the premium version or whatever it is (comes with component, wireless controller, etc) and it has hdmi and the 65nm chip. i bought it about 3 weeks ago.
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6They're also avoiding lawsuits and massive recalls. What do you think it would do to Microsoft if they had to recall every single 360 and replace/repair them at once?
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yes. It says it right above the smallest barcode on the sticker outside of the box.
- Rukaribe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Agree totally, I just wish they had more accessories in black to match my elite.
- KyleMistry, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6No, because the problem's still there. Microsoft's just making sure that, for 3 years, the problem doesn't cost the users any money (even if it still costs them time).
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I just bought my damned elite last week. It's a 90nm core if the heatpipe theory is right, with a Hitachi DVD player.
*****. - mokkos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They'd rather give you the choice to upgrade and keep the price lower than to give you everything up front but with really high price like the PS3.
- xOKxWhy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Is this only for Elites and Halo 360's?
- Vinnie87, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What I was getting at was if we have hardware failures are our 360s going to be fixed with the best hardware available or will we get the old fix so that our box can just break again.
- AhrenBa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The only lots that people have reported to have the 65nm chips are lot 734. Unfortunately, I don't think 730 had the new chips.
- chibigoku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ok, so I just bought a Halo 360, but mine is lot 730. Does that mean I dont have the "supposed" new chips, or do all the Halo ones possibly have them, and its the other versions of the console you are looking for lot 734 on?
- MikeWanDo, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4Why shove HD-DVD down people's throats? I'd much rather have what I want and nothing more.
- xboxing, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Will this make them any quieter due to less heating? My biggest beef with mine (recent model Elite... my launch box completely died on me) is, it's so damn loud, I have to shut the door on my entertainment center and let it cook in there just so I can hear the audio from a game. Playing a game like BioShock with subtle environmental audio is really hard.
