- MrFisty, on 10/10/2007, -8/+160Am I the only one who feels like 9s and 10s for review scores are being used a little too liberally? This isn’t a criticism on Halo 3 at all, but when you look at games like Gears, Bioshock, Halo (sorry, only 360 games are springing to mind at the moment) and they’re all getting these 10s and 9.5s.
Now I’m not saying these aren’t excellent games, but I wouldn’t call them perfect games. And in my book, giving something a 10/10 implies perfection – that there is no conceivable way to make the game any better than it currently is.
It’s just something that I’ve noticed over the last couple of years, that what used to be an average “not bad, not good” 5/10 game now gets a 7 or an 8, and bad games now get 4s and 5s.
Again, I’m not saying good games don’t deserve these high scores, but maybe they need to be a bit more realistic. I’m just having a hard time trying to assess my purchase decision of a game when the review itself seems to be at least partially influenced by pre-release hype. - reddevil3, on 10/10/2007, -13/+122I've read the reviews by Gamespot, IGN and 1up.com, and from all the reviews it seems like this game doesn't deserve more than a 9.0.
Here's an excerpt from the 1up.com review:
"But in Halo 3, the big "oh wow!" gameplay moments just aren't there, although some bits are still memorable nonetheless, like fighting the Scarabs, at least one (that we've found) off-the-beaten-path joke scene, and a frantic stage at the end that's clearly a throwback to something everyone loved in Combat Evolved.
So depending on your mood, campaign mode either delivers what's expected or delivers that very well, but anyone would be hard pressed to call it mind-blowing. The same goes for versus multiplayer. Like campaign mode, it's also really refined and built very well from top to bottom, but it doesn't hold any big surprises for fans of the last two titles (those come later)."
Doesn't sound like a 10.0 game to me. It seems like some people are just giving the game a high rating just because it is Halo. - HunterTV, on 10/10/2007, -3/+75Reviewing this game is like reviewing crack cocaine.
People are either hooked and are going to buy it regardless, or aren't and don't give a *****. - atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -13/+84As though 1UP would *not* give Halo 3 a 10/10. Everyone and their dog knows that 1UP is written by hardcore gamers *for* hardcore gamers. What? Did you really think they'd give Cooking Mama a 10/10 while they score Halo 3 a 5/10?
Now, if some random gamer from pogo.com played Halo 3 and scored it a 10/10, *that* would be news. - artyen, on 10/10/2007, -13/+51As a long time fps gamer, I've never really seen the draw to the Halo series. It has amazing multiplayer for friends, parties, and so on, but as for the single player content, it's lacking. The setting is a futuristic, with a protagonist who is very generic. He's a tall "kick ass and take names" guy in a battle suit. I've seen this done before in Quake, Doom, and so on. The enemies are nothing too amazing. Generic, brightly-colored bug-like aliens. I've seen that a dozen times before, as well. The weapons are pretty standard, although the energy sword is a nice escape from the norm.
Where Halo really broke the mold was vehicle combat. At the time, they were the first to really come out with a solid fps that had non-aggravating vehicle combat, especially for a console game. Combined with really simple controls, it became a staple among the gaming community for casual and hardcore gaming with friends.
To be honest though, I dont think the Halo series ever deserves a 10/10. It's a solid game series, but the storyline is interesting yet generic, for the setting. The weapons, characters, and enemies are nothing we haven't seen before. Halo has and always will be a very solid 8 to 9 out of 10 for me. They've pushed the envelope, but never far enough to warrant a perfect score. Far too much is borrowed from other games that we've seen over and over again. - metamorfoza, on 10/10/2007, -5/+42I agree totally
"But in Halo 3, the big "oh wow!" gameplay moments just aren't there" - its not there, but what a heck , lets give it a 10, as if it was there. - reed311, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39This is going to turn into a front page review circle-jerk like it did for Bioshock isn't it? :(
- Petrie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31That statement inflicted so much damage to my ability to reason that i almost considered buying a ps3.
- duzytata, on 10/10/2007, -9/+37All you people trashing the reviews... have you played halo 3 yet? Whats that? You didn't? STFU and wait for the game to come out.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23I've never played Halo. What makes it so good?
- johnnyutah001, on 10/10/2007, -12/+32that shoe character praises the halo storyline and ***** on metal gear solid one. i cant trust him.
- mlindemu, on 10/10/2007, -13/+33Surprised?
- maxpower2911, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Too long, did not read.
- UncleCrapper, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21In defense of "Cooking Mama", it's pretty damn awesome.
- TheNik, on 10/10/2007, -5/+24It's good fun to play with other people. An often overlooked aspect is the musical score, which I love.
- attractivetb, on 10/10/2007, -12/+31I agree completely. Like you, I've never played the game....but I'm also a big enough ass to suggest that I know more about it than the reviewers who have spent 20+ hours with it.
I give it a 7.8.
A 10 is a ridiculous score. I can't wait to buy it on Tuesday. It's totally gonna blow. - schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Don't TASE me bro.
- Crilix, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23Please, learn how to punctuate and spell. Thanks,
-Cril - PlacidTomato, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23I find it hilarious that so many people rated Halo 3 low in the user reviews without even having a chance to play it.
99% of the people that rated it bad (0s and 1s) said that they were "sure it's going to suck" or that they basically just hate the series/console.
Well, that's fanboys for you, I guess. - DolphinGL, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23Even if Halo 3 isn't that good, no one has the balls to give it anything less than a near-perfect review.
- MatttK, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22I couldn't agree more. The IGN review was the same. They talked about how the campaign wasn't great, the campaign was far too easy on normal mode, friendly AI stinks, and co-op can be beaten far too quickly... and then gave it a 9.5 because the multiplayer is great (for a console FPS - their words, not mine). That really doesn't seem like 9.5 to me...
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -5/+206 hours? Where'd you pull that from? Ars, who has been the harshest on the single player so far, says 8-10 on normal difficulty. As long as you're not speedrunning and are on at least heroic skill level (normal is too easy for most gamers), it sounds like you'll have at least 10 hours, and probably more.
- miyamotofreak, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17I love how people say the score "sounds like it should be this and bla bla bla reviewer is biased". My favorite game ever is Resident Evil 4 and the game has flaws (more so than games I like less) but in the end of the game I had more fun and felt more satisfied with it than any other game.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19If you read the review it seems like this game should have gotten a 6 or a 7 from how the reviewer describes it. Just the first paragraph says that it's not perfect. If it's not perfect, then DON'T GIVE IT A PERFECT SCORE!
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -20/+34I'm twitching with excitement. I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.
Holy ***** this is just like Christmas. - bbqsalad, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17PERFCT CUZ U R A ***** TARD.
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13*****, was that English?
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Hey, it'll be a break from Apple headlines.
- EvanVolm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+141UP also gave Halo 2 a 10(actually, 3 10's). I would've been extremely surprised if they HADN'T given Halo 3 a 10 as well.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+12You mean .. it hasn't already?
- mtrip, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Yes, unfortunately there will be people who don't agree with him, and insist on "thinking for themselves" and "making up their own minds" and other things alien to diggers and PC fanboys.
- Akaji, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16I'd like to thank HungarianHuman for a glimpse into the psyche of a typical Halo-addicted jock.
Now I'm going to go kill myself before this happens - http://www.loadingreadyrun.com/videos/view/228 - opnickc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Try Tetris.
- PunkRampant, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Well played, sir.
- Boomh4u3r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12lol...that was pretty funny
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -7/+17Thank you for stating something that is the truth, and needs to be heard/read.
Unfortunately, not everyone will agree with you, and the Halo Fanboys/girls will begin to bury you ruthlessly for what they think is a farce, even though they know, in their heart and soul that it is true. - sjm20k, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15I have a massive issue with giving a game a perfect score when "without the music it wouldn't be worth playing" and "brings nothing new to the series". I'll admit I thought the first 2 were mediocre - I'm spoiled by PC games - but giving a game that relies on hype to suss these reviews out of reputable gaming sites a better review than something like say - half-life 2, which arguably set the standard for modern first person shooters in terms of action-oriented gameplay and graphics, just seems like journalistic stupidity.
- M-ACE, on 10/10/2007, -8/+171UP has always maintained there is no such thing as a perfect game. 10/10 is not a perfect score but an Excellent score.
- ydt89, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1211/10
- sleepwalkers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I was hearing 6-7 if you're playing campaign with 4 people, but ~15 playing alone.
- an0nymous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yeah but the Risk single player campaign totally sucks.
9/10! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9too many 2, 3 & 4's in that *****
- Flynnz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10heh I never ever ever ever ever would even suggest Halo is in the same league as SF2 (hence why "new" was in quotes), I was simply comparing that both games are successful because of their multi player, NOT their single player. Thought that was clear, but I guess not.
- terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11There is no one in video game journalism that I trust more than Shoe, though I don't always agree with his taste.
Just picking the most negative part of the article out isn't exactly fair. Clearly he feels that it deserves a 10 despite the negative things he mentioned. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10So what are you going to score games that are better than Halo 3? 11 out of 10?
- PunkRampant, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11So what do they do when they need to give a More Excellent score?
- bagboyrebel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Really well put. I know that people really play Halo for the multiplayer, but I still find single player important, and Halo single player was just lacking.
- Flynnz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13well I'm not a huge Halo fan myself, but you have to remember that Halo is the "new" street fighter 2. No one cared about single player SF2, and the game was still one of the most successful games of all times. I put Halo in the same category. People will be playing this game for a loooong time because of the multilayer. Dare I say a lot longer than just about every other game made. Honestly its like saying tennis sucks cause you are only playing against a wall.
- Boomh4u3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8RE 4 was really good IMO
- johnnyutah001, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11it may be WIERD at times, but I like that and it gives it character and lots of humor. i just feel halo had a generic story thats been told countless times, a main character with the personality of cardboard and lame aliens. but hey its just my worthless opinion.
