- hiropendragon, on 10/23/2009, -2/+46Thank you, Time, for paying Ze to make videos regularly again.
- borez, on 10/24/2009, -2/+32I could watch a whole series of those on different countries. The complete history of the world in 3 minute sections, that would rock.
- JakeBC, on 10/24/2009, -0/+20This guy explained more in three minutes than CNN does in an entire 24 hour news cycle.
- mattman59, on 10/24/2009, -3/+1915,000 is the number of dead the Russians use, everyone who has studied the war puts the number higher than our vietnam casualties. The Soviets didn't have NEAR the gear we did and for the most part dropped troops in an area and expected them to find their own food.
Also the Taliban were started in a small village after the ruling warlord started molesting the local kids. A group of Talib (Islamic students) ended up sticking the warlord's head on a pike to let everyone know what was up.
The book he has in the background is a good one but should only be a starting point, Ahmed Rashid is a great author about the whole south central Asian region. - inactive, on 10/24/2009, -1/+11*****, I haven't seen a Ze video in a looong time.
- hiropendragon, on 10/23/2009, -0/+9http://www.zefrank.com/theshow/ - you can download his "The Show With Ze Frank" - a 1-year set which was fantastic (though a lot of the news is now, of course, 2-3 years old.) - for iTunes.
- DulcetTone, on 10/24/2009, -0/+7Maybe one day you'll invent a guerilla school-builder.
- DeadManWalking, on 10/24/2009, -2/+8Just spent 10 minutes watching some of his other videos. They're great - I wish Time would offer an RSS feed of just Ze Frank's videos. Not that interested in subscribing to the other vids offered through Time.
- zoomaKabu, on 10/24/2009, -1/+7Charlie Wilson's War photo bomb?
- zmigliozzi, on 10/24/2009, -0/+4That was more enlightening than anything the 24hr news networks tell me, thank you Ze.
- DooM, on 10/23/2009, -1/+5Now if they'd only pay him more to be more regular... er, make videos more regularly. Whatever.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3Should we keep wasting money there then? How long how much. I'm more afraid or our economic and financial losses. You'll never get me afraid of Taliban unless they can get a credible military industry going. Why in God's name are people like you so afraid of these backward peoples?
- samsmartjr, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3You're absolutely right. The only way we're gonna keep Afghanistan from falling into the hands of the likes of the Taliban is by providing some sort of economy besides the opium trade. Or legalize heroin and let the Afghanis profit the only way they know, build up their economic base, and use it to fund schools and universities so their people can get a proper modern education. That's the only way we're going to be able to get out of there without fear that it'll all happen all over again.
- mickstephenson, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3Adam Curtis the documentary maker responsible for "The Century of the Self", "The Power of Nightmares" and "The Trap", is currently releasing a series of blogs researching into the history of Afghanistan with interspersed with clips of old BBC archive footage, it's well worth a read http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/adamcurtis/
- LokitheComplex, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3Speaking from one of the Empires(UK) that had a graveyard there I don't see how fighting out forth war there is going to help. The Muslims that bombed the tube here blamed our war there as reasons for their anger.
- mattman59, on 10/24/2009, -1/+4Why would you nuke a city full of civilians for the actions of a few? Republicans in this country are mostly ignorant war-mongers who love to see brown people in pain, should every American pay for them?
In Afghanistan the Taliban are in the minority and us leaving will make the country look like it did before we got there, civil war supplying 90% of the opium trade. The Taliban and warlords want nothing more than the guys with airpower to GTFO so they can get back to pillaging. - siyengar, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3"then we will nuke Kabul" - Nuke? Are you serious?
The next time any country uses nuclear weapons, it will be the end of civilization as we know it.
Stop embarrassing yourself and fellow Americans by your views that make you look more primitive than the Taliban. - BotchaMcCoola, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3Btu CNN gets commercial income from the us chump taxpayers via Lockheed Martin. They don't want too many questions or facts on war matters to get out, do they. Instead we see more opinions of Military and politicans that support the taxpayer rip-off wars.
- Lunarparcel, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3Nice to see that Ze is still keeping as busy as ever.
But I miss The Show for his daily entertaining and insightful commentary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zl0fXU4YqA - dawgma, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3you don't have to say "arithmetical equation".. you can just say "equation".
arithmetical equation = douchebag who adds superfluous words to try to sound smart. - siyengar, on 10/24/2009, -2/+5A Marxist government is any day, in any way, shape or form, better than a theocracy. Especially a theocracy that is built on Islamic values.
Needless to say but Carter, Reagan and Bush senior administration supported the Afghan rebel and terrorist movement that in turn strengthened Al Qaeda and enabled them to not only plan and execute terrorist activities but also helped them broaden, expand, propagate and make a case for the most vile, radical and abhorrent version of Islam.
With Bush junior, we came close to establishing a similar theocracy where stem cell research, gay rights, abortion are issues only because of the freedom that religion enjoys. It's 2009 and we still haven't learned our lesson. Religion is the root of all evil. It is time we emancipated ourselves from the suffocating clutches of religion and embarked on the mission of peace, justice and equality. - LokitheComplex, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2>how would the Taliban behave after the turnover of Afghanistan to radical >Islam.
they would treat it as they had done before
and be busy fighting each other as they had in the passed
If the West pulls out Afghanistan does not magically return to peace.
>Would they turn their radical ideology of "Death to America" into good deeds >if only they would be left alone?
The UK has more attacks and plots since the war rather than less.
>If I was in the Taliban hierarchy I would go after Iraq again,I
You think Iraq still has a taste for civil war?
>defeated the most sophisticated war machine in history with a few roadside >bombs and ambushes, why not go after a >tottering Iraq and Pakistan with a >new army of recruits, then
the Pakistan situation I agree is difficult
but Western gunships on the border are very good recruiting agents for the Taliban anyway
>energize are vast Islamic communities in Europe to demand are Islamic >laws.
whether Islamic communities in Europe want Islamic laws or not does not depend on the Taliban
>The corrupt weak west is ready to fall with bankrupt criminal economies
And thats a reason to spend more war in Asia? - tehknotte, on 10/24/2009, -0/+2i had no idea he was still doing videos like this. ZEEEEEEEEEEEEE
- slugpellet63, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2Are you 12 years old?
- LokitheComplex, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2If your model is true I still don't see how fighting a war in Afghanistan will stop the "Islamification of Europe."
A war without end as promised early on only feeds the descent.
The real worse case scenario (though still unlikely) of Islam in Europe is Yugoslavia not some European Caliphate. - pardonmedoug, on 10/24/2009, -0/+2They all come up on his own feed, along with a bunch of other cool stuff.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/zefrank - Raian, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1And they say news has been dumbed down.... I can't believe people watch this crap...
- BotchaMcCoola, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1I bet the Muhajidin are all converting to al-Qaeda supporters now that the US is no longer their friends. Anyone know if I'm right about that? We supported them and helped them grow against the Soviets.
- LokitheComplex, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1The Trap was a completely flawed documentary. If you know the basics of game theory you will know why.
- slugpellet63, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1".......Vietnam was a local ethnic conflict."
No. Vietnam was an anti-colonial war for independence and unification.
"The West has to block the passes with graves so this Islamic ideology doesn't stampede"
This comment reveals such crass stupidity and immaturity that I feel any kind of response would be futile. - BotchaMcCoola, on 10/24/2009, -1/+2The US is willing to waste more moeny and manpower than most countries. They will make it into a new 60+ year MIC Dream Cost Driver better than Korea. Maybe they can even station a million troops there someday until China must take it all over
- d3athr1d3r, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1This guy's facial expressions are.....
- Wolfboy, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1His new video clips are on iTunes in the Time Magazine Video Podcasts feed. But you'll also get Time's other video clips, not just his.
- DeadManWalking, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Brilliant. Ta very much :)
- CanceledCzech, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1http://www.zefrank.com/theshow/
- LokitheComplex, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1The Vietnam for the Vietnamese was far more about nationalism than ideology. Though you also neglect the appeal of communism no matter what its actual out come. Equality like freedom is a virtue. Too little is a crime too much is a vice.
- Super6, on 10/24/2009, -1/+2Afghanistan hasn't dismantled anything but itself, the whole country is just one big moneysuck. Empires go there and then give up, probably after realizing it's a barren wasteland with no resources.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Billy, you are deeply stupid.
And you weren't even interested enough to watch a three minute vid. - norwegianlegion, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1I find myself saying Muhajidin over and over again.
- LeeDigg, on 10/24/2009, -3/+3I don't get the appeal. I was so annoyed by his style and bad jokes I couldn't even get through half of the video.
- Ramble, on 10/24/2009, -2/+2When will Pakistan and other countries nuke the US because they've been kidnapping citizens?
- allisonV12, on 10/25/2009, -0/+0Vietnam...would you ay that American withdrawal betrayed the South Vietnamese people, sending maybe 100,000 into reeducation death camps and another 1,000,000 fleeing across the oceans.
Afghanistan...lets play a guessing game,25,000 to 50,000 murdered by the Taliban for being traitors.
another 100,000 fleeing to whatever safety they could find.
Those are acceptable numbers for saving the life of 5,000 to 10,000 American and NATO troops in the long haul?
Now do you think the Obama regime wants to go down in history retreating from Afghanistan or let it ride for a few more years?
From his strength of character dealing with ovious criminal banksters...I think he'll let it ride - BotchaMcCoola, on 10/24/2009, -2/+1I bet you like wasting trillions on the military am I right? Stop being fearful of these Muslim Hillbillies or go and fight them at your own expense. They do not frighten us unless you bring some of them into the US.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 10/24/2009, -4/+3No convincing argument has been advanced for the Taliban having a critical or necessary role in 911. If Bin Laden had been living in Southern Thailand at that time would we be wasting trillions occupying Thailand by now? You people have got to demand some answers from the politicians and the media on all this foolishness.
- allisonV12, on 10/25/2009, -1/+0More Western apologist trying to understand the heart of Islam.
Both Vietnam's North and South were free of colonist, the French packed their bags and left.
America garrisoned Southern Vietnam in a cold war chess game only after the Dictatorial North was hell bent on subjugation of their reasonably free southern cousins.one ideology just like Islam, except it was a localized conflict, brother against brother with no grand allusions of conquering the outside world.
Now radical Islam or passive Islam would like nothing better then to spread the true faith, unlike the North Vietnamese army their is no border demarcation line.
No STOP sign,Ive won the war. - allisonV12, on 10/25/2009, -1/+0But you did reply.
Thank you for your input, please come again - allisonV12, on 10/25/2009, -2/+0So you think the Taliban are harmless tribal halfwits that would the turn their weapons against each the moment the West vacated their killing fields, turning the musket against each other once the Briti...American grenadiers left their little homeland?
Maybe in 1869 but not today and one airport away from each other.
Iraq does have a taste for more civil war,two antagonistic branches of Islam.
A dozen antagonistic ethnic groups with no loyalty to each other.
Greed, money and indigenous Mafia hoodlums and wacky religious fanatics.
Europe is culturally changing with an historic migrations of Islamic peoples.
You might get the typical bored Euro reply "So what,I like the food and music"
But things are changing fast and a radical Islamic victory WILL energize the marginalized immigrant youth of France,Germany and Britain.
It could turn into an unstoppable movement as Europe has basically already rolled over and played dead - GeneralSafi, on 10/24/2009, -3/+1we take your empires, and we dismantle them
because your weapons of war are no use against guerilla warriors
god I love being afghan - allisonV12, on 10/24/2009, -3/+0To those that want withdrawal,retreat and...yes defeat.
In your perfect ethical world, how would the Taliban behave after the turnover of Afghanistan to radical Islam.
Would they turn their radical ideology of "Death to America" into good deeds if only they would be left alone?
If I was in the Taliban hierarchy I would go after Iraq again,I defeated the most sophisticated war machine in history with a few roadside bombs and ambushes, why not go after a tottering Iraq and Pakistan with a new army of recruits, then energize are vast Islamic communities in Europe to demand are Islamic laws.
The corrupt weak west is ready to fall with bankrupt criminal economies - thcobbs, on 10/24/2009, -4/+1"Now if they'd only pay him more to be more regular..."
Well, his videos can be full of ***** sometimes. -
