- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+10We are now looking at a 700 Billion dollar military budget for FY2009.
Neither of the two major parties questions the continuation of record defense budgets.
If they will not even talk about reining in the Military Industrial Complex, shouldn't we vote third party? - inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Stevo, thats not applicable. We are deeply in debt and we are funding entitlement programs that must be paid by law. We cannot pat our bills but we pretend that we can provide security for the whole planet. That is hubris and it emanates from the Military Industrial Complex. They depend on this spending.
What we can cut is defense. And we need to cut defense because it is our military industrial complex that is pushing us into dangerous, unnecessary situations.
You build this giant military and people think (and Madeline Albright said) "What good is it if we can't use it"?
That flies in the face of Reaganism and the legacy of Teddy Roosevelt's Big Stick. Big military is supposed to keep others at bay and thereby provide us with security and it can when we stay at home. But when our military is based all over the world we ignite nationalistic hatred in people such that they will attack us even though they fear our big stick.
You see we forget about the first part of Teddy Roosevelt's advice which was to "walk softly". Our giant military is certainly NOT walking softly, it kicking doors down. - inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2I like your dream.
So does Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin and Ralph Nader
Vote third party! - inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2I suggest that we concentrate our power in the Libertarian Party.
- Sfoggari, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2YES!
but which 3rd party? - Stevanoski, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2But to be honest my friend caferrell, you need to use the percentage of GNP as this would come closer to representing real dollars, inflation and such. If you do that it is not that much higher than after WWII.
- Sfoggari, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2So, if understand these statistics well the US could save their economy (and probably that of the rest of the world) by ...saving on their military expenditure for one to two years. In other words, 0 or half military expenditure and pump spend the money in the economy ...that would be the day! ha! One little detail, instead of giving this money to those giant companies, give it to those people who have difficulty paying their mortgage. They will pay well, the companies will not go bust and everybody will be happy :) PLUS a lot fewer weapons will circulate ...
Yes, I know I am a dreamer ... :(
