Women Hit Hardest by Global Food Crisis
washingtonpost.com — OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso After she woke in the dark to sweep city streets, after she walked an hour to buy less than $2 worth of food, after she cooked for two hours in the searing noon heat, Fanta Lingani served her family's only meal of the day. Just wish the Democratic held Congress would hold one hearing on the fuel/food crisis. But no, they are still stuck in the Watergate mentality. That is, the only way to win is to jail your opponents. Even if they have done no crime, your willing allies in the media will make it look like they have. This will never end until a younger/smarter crowd of Democrats is elected.- alapoet, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2The Democrats jail their opponents, do they?
Guess that's why they built Guantanomo, then, right?
No, wait a minute. That was the Republicans. The ones who torture and kill their opponents.
My bad.

- lucidguru, on 07/19/2008, -1/+7It seems like the food crisis affects the same demographic as the homeless here in America... The homeless are not typically the panhandlers that you see on the street corner, but women with children.
- kd420, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1I think this has less to do with the food crisis, and more to do with traditional female roles. "When the kids are hungry, they go to their mother, not their father. And when there is less food, women are the first to eat less." It's still sad to see what the food crisis is causing, but we have to realize that these inequality issues existed before the food crisis as well. If you feel bad for these women, you have to also feel bad for the women that get stuck cooking and cleaning in households all across the world.

- str3ama, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Well it's because her husband probably works, so it makes sense for him to eat first so that he can have energy to continue working and bringing back whatever money he can. The children get to eat before her because as mothers, they put their children above themselves. I can only see this food shortage issue getting worse, and it's really sad when you realize that supermarkets throw out food that would otherwise be considered edible in other parts of the world.
