And with a country of > 1 billion where the majority live in poverty, you need some kind of population control. If you have one boy, you can't have another. It's just the desire to have a son to carry on the family name that makes this negative towards female babies.

The law isn't even necessary because history proves that as an economy advances that birth rates decline and male/female ratios tend towards even. This just rubs me the wrong frickin way. What makes this mindset it even more interesting (or demented) is that women in China are being kidnapped and sold to the highest bidder because the male to female ratio is so disproportinate that adult males are having a difficult time finding brides. Yet, bearing a girl child is less honorable than having a male child. /ranting. Sorry This just rubs me the wrong frickin way.

Whenever a population becomes too large not only are there economic factors (wars, economic policy, etc.) that can contribute to a depopulation, but there are also biological factors (diseases, starvation, etc) that will reduce populations.
A One-Child policy is essentially a ceiling on how many children a family can have. That can cause people to make rational, not necessarily moral, decisions as how to ration their children. If you hare a rural farmer, you want an extra male to assist with farming and hard work. Females are no good to you. This creates a problem because an abundance of males is far more unstable than an abundance of people. An abundance of males leads to external conflict because you have "expendable" men. It leads to social unrest because there are too few brides. And it can lead to the abduction and rape of women. Overpopulation would seem like a minor nuisance compared to an overpopulation of males.
The idea that the world can be overpopulated is rooted in pure fear and no facts can substantiate such a claim. I more fear a world of too many men compared to women than I fear a world of too many people. - bjs3171, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3congratulations!
