- liamvictor, on 03/23/2008, -8/+236To be honest I've resubmitted this story that I saw here a week ago. I felt it deserved another chance as it is such an important issue:
http://digg.com/world_news/Author_Struggles_with_T ... - Rayke, on 03/23/2008, -19/+206With $8000 and a ticket to New York you can buy a cute hooker.
- SenorCardgage74, on 03/23/2008, -18/+165Look I dig sex with the unwillling as much as anyone, but what the ***** people?
- Thater, on 03/23/2008, -4/+12790% of /b/tards just bought a ticket to Haiti...
- CoolBluReason, on 03/23/2008, -1/+107Possibly, there are more slave now than ever before because there are more people now than ever before.
- hollyminkowski, on 03/23/2008, -9/+112"Today you can go to Haiti and buy a 9-year-old girl to use as a sexual and domestic slave for $50."
OMFG :-(
What sort soulless creature could have any part in something so monstrous.
The world is insane :-( - synaesthesia, on 03/23/2008, -2/+97Slavery was invented 30 seconds after the first prostitute tried to quit.
- secondwheel2, on 03/23/2008, -2/+90for 1 hour
- Ninjapope, on 03/23/2008, -0/+70I'm pretty sure Slavery isn't a career choice for most people.
- veloscaper, on 03/23/2008, -3/+69$6/hr x 8 hrs = $48/day. And it manages to feed and cloth itself and come back the next day for more work.
- skinflute, on 03/23/2008, -8/+74You don't give a damn about slavery, but you are upset over empathic but lazy Diggers?
Wow. - sagien, on 03/23/2008, -2/+67It's called empathy. It's a natural human trait. It doesn't matter if the majority of the readers of this article can't or won't do anything. The idea is to bring awareness because there are those of us who can and will go do something about it.
- budgeysmuggler, on 03/23/2008, -3/+65Saddest thing Ive read in long while, digging for greater awareness.
- qwertydvorak, on 03/23/2008, -4/+66diggers will wait 6 years until she's 15.
- zeromancer, on 03/23/2008, -16/+74mankind sickens me.
- SenorCardgage74, on 03/23/2008, -2/+58Oh wow.
Here's how drunk I was last night; I seriously have no recollection AT ALL of posting that. - blackjack75, on 03/23/2008, -2/+53Sure, you only get in her bed for one hour but you get to hear about it for the rest of your life.
- Jenadae, on 03/23/2008, -5/+53People say that prostitution is the oldest career in existence, I've always wondered were slave falls in on that.
- patman, on 03/23/2008, -5/+53Be aware. Your 50$ will increase the demand for slaves and possibly (on the margin) increase slavery.
- MississippiLife, on 03/23/2008, -0/+47Good point, very important story...
- Riffington, on 03/23/2008, -0/+47Anyone comparing "OMG I have to work" to actual slavery is a moral idiot. There is no comparison between "Walmart treats me bad, but I'm free to look for a new job" and "If I try to run, my master will beat me".
- Kral, on 03/23/2008, -0/+40And your airline ticket will increase the demand for packages of pretzels. Please, think of the pretzels.
- Thater, on 03/23/2008, -0/+37I would agree with you if it were some fluff story or blogspam, but it's not. I'm glad it was resubmitted, and that it's on the front page now.
digg rules aren't holy scripture. - blackjack75, on 03/23/2008, -0/+36Well, they won't suck your dick. But if you train them well at the local Walmart, they'll lick your ass.
- fletcherrr, on 03/23/2008, -0/+36Yeah, prostitution is the world's oldest profession. Slavery is by definition not a profession.
- RAEP, on 03/23/2008, -1/+37and they are 34.
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -0/+35You were right in doing so. Thank you for showing us this article.
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -2/+37think we can get a group fare?
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -1/+33Why not go all out? Spend $100 dollars and buy a goat.
- blackjack75, on 03/23/2008, -1/+29Excuse me but what the hell does NATO or Canada or even Thailand have to do with modern day slavery? Do you think it would not happen if they were not there? Or do you think they could easily stop the practice by snapping their fingers?
- Thater, on 03/23/2008, -0/+27well, statistically it would be possible to have more slaves but still have less slaves per capita. consider that in 1850 there were only estimated to be about 1.2 billion people on earth. In less than 200 years we've more than quadrupled that number.
- laserblazer, on 03/23/2008, -4/+30Rudy's not that cute.
- tehmoth, on 03/23/2008, -0/+24Important tip for anyone considering this, thanks.
/s - inactive, on 03/23/2008, -71/+95Digg users trying to act like they give a damn about societal issues amuses me. The majority of you won't get your fat asses off your chairs for the next two hours after reading this, but you'll comment and talk like you're a virtuous, outraged wannabe hero. I know I'll continue to sit here (I'll probably head to ESPN in a second), except I don't pretend like I give a damn, because I don't.
But stop acting like you people are so intellectually and emotionally involved in stuff when you aren't.
Digg has to be one of the internet's major melting pots of hypocrisy. - blackjack75, on 03/23/2008, -0/+22Because if you rape the goat you could be charged with torturing an animal. PETA wouldn't let that happen.
- spazmaster, on 03/23/2008, -2/+24Isn't it incredible we'll talk with shame over the days of slavery back in the days, while slavery is worse NOW. (wheres the shame now?)
A friend of mine works for STOP THE TRAFFIK, which is a great organisation fighting slavery and traffiking throughout the world.
If you want to get involved, heres a chance and get involved: http://www.stopthetraffik.org - HalfGiraffe, on 03/23/2008, -0/+22Huh? Shame on Canada? For sending in RCMP to train the police in how not to act like corrupt *****? For providing basic security so that people can go about their business without being raped, robbed or kidnapped? And you would like Canada to NOT do this work? And this would improve the slavery problem how?
- muniak, on 03/23/2008, -1/+22I guess he forgot how seriously serious business the internet is.
I just have say that while your morals tell you joking about this is wrong, mine don't. Sure this is ***** and I should do something about it aside from blogging about it or pressing a link that makes it slightly more visible to others but I probably will not. I think if you take every serious issue seriously you're going to be a pretty depressed individual. - tayashilah, on 03/23/2008, -0/+21Why would he go to Haiti to buy a slave? He could get one right here in the US.
"The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency estimates that 50,000 people are trafficked into or transited through the U.S.A. annually as sex slaves, domestics, garment, and agricultural slaves."
http://gvnet.com/humantrafficking/USA.htm - gsenechal, on 03/23/2008, -0/+18"And for shame to Canada, who's NATO troops in Haiti help continue this system.NATO is totally disgusting."
Ummm.... So going in to help means you become responsible for all the problems in a country? - roflbrothel, on 03/23/2008, -5/+22IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE IT'S TRUE!
- iMike360, on 03/23/2008, -3/+20I'm not surprised, I don't like it and I find it disgusting, but I'm not surprised. I know people pay to goto countries like the philippines to have sex with slaves and children; Its called sex tourism.
- binaryloop, on 03/23/2008, -4/+20People in the US of A won't realize this until they start selling slaves in Wal-mart.
- purelithium, on 03/23/2008, -2/+18Would it be a bad thing to go there, buy as many as you could, then tell them to go and live their lives, setting them free?
- kitkatsavvy, on 03/23/2008, -4/+20everything else on the internet is just the same - the same with all information etc... ie... tv ads are only designed for the 1% or so who will actually buy the product - its the same with everything - at least the author felt passionately enough about this to write about it - thats all he can do
- SenorCardgage74, on 03/23/2008, -1/+17naw, i had just gotten home and (i guess) i was drunk digging.
cant imagine why. - diggduggjoe, on 03/23/2008, -0/+15I would guess they would end up homeless and resold. If, you bought a person, you would have to get them out of Haiti to do any good.
- nkleffman, on 03/23/2008, -3/+18Consider sponsoring a child through Children International, for $22 a day you can provide healthcare, clothing, and school supplies for a child that would otherwise be in a situation like this. Not only that, but because it is a 1 on 1 sponsorship, you also serve as a role-model and a caring adult that can provide hope and encouragement to a disadvantaged child.
I've got 2 kids, one in Honduras and one in the Phillipines. It's the most rewarding $44 I spend every month.
http://www.children.org/ - t0ny, on 03/23/2008, -1/+16I have a friend that raises and sells goats, so I can hook you up.
- tidejwe, on 03/23/2008, -0/+15Indeed, although you don't actually have to leave USA boundaries for it. These Haitian child-slaves are called "restaveks" or restavecs and there are quite a few trafficked throughout southern Florida as well. I have actually spent quite a bit of time in Haiti myself, and my screen name is even derived from Haitian. Child slavery is a huge issue that is relatively ignored.
One of the times I went back to Haiti to work in orphanages with little orphan kids, I found that at least one of the guys running such an orphanage was a convicted pedophile from the states. He took in street kids, gave them a home and molested them in turn for room and board. The stories some of those kids told about the man were so controversial. Some hated him for what he did to kids, some defended him for saving their lives and taking them in off the streets. It's heart-wrenching. We petitioned the government many times to investigate and throw the man in prison, but nobody cared...although I heard a rumor that some time after I left he was thrown in Haitian prison *SHUDDER* for unrelated issues.
Seriously, you think this article is bad, run a search on "restaveks" or "restavecs" (both with and without the S...since most Americans add the S to make it plural) and start to get the REAL story behind it all.
I knew a lady who was so poor she had no choice but to try to get pregnant so she could have more kids and sell some of them off to pay for herself to stay alive and eat. She felt miserable for it (and for good reason), and hated herself, but she felt she had no choice if she was going to keep herself and a couple of her other kids alive.
I met a lot of homeless kids and kids in orphanages with stories so heart wrenching you would cry. A couple street boys in the south of Haiti when I first visited there would come to my door every night to eat my left over dinner because that's the only time they would get food all day. One of the natives I was with asked the kid if he knew my name, and the kid responded "Yeah, he's Jesus"...besides being the only person to feed and help the kid, I was the only white person he'd ever seen. I am really considering adopting some Haitian orphan kids just to save them from a life of such misery. Don't misunderstand...MANY Haitians are wonderful people! I LOVE THEM! Some of my best friends in the world live there now that I've met them...but some of the poor areas and the homeless, and the street kids, and the restaveks....it really breaks your heart or you are a complete bastard...
Oh, the stories I could tell...In short, it is GREAT to see this get some publicity and exposure here on Digg. I wish "Anonymous" could do something about these "restaveks" both at home (in Florida) and abroad (Haiti, etc). *SIGH* Just because adult slavery is basically unheard of, doesn't mean child slavery isn't still in full force...and worse than ever. I've tried to help the situation myself, all at my own expense...but only a massive force ala "Anonymous" could really have much of an impact...so good on ya for bringing this to light to some of those who haven't heard of the issue before now. -
