Western society is simply more acceptive for women doing certain things than men. For example women can wear traditional "men's clothes," but men wearing "women's clothes" get ridiculed. Women can be butch or feminine, both socially acceptable, while men are either manly, or fags. Similarly most men are positively gay for lesbians, but feel uncomfortable with homosexual men.
So yeah, I definitely think it's mostly a social thing, but genetics might have something to do with it. Hopefully society will become more open towards these things in the future. By society, I hope you mean both men AND women. Women are a big part of forcing men to be macho. Women SAY they want a sensitive guy, but their actions say otherwise. Women can also have sex with underage teenagers and it's considered ok by many. Women can have sex with someone while drunk that they later regret and have the option of saying that they've been raped, and people will believe them. I came here to make this point, sort of. You know what? Life isn't about being STRAIGHT, or GAY or BISEXUAL. You have to realize that life is TOUGH. It's going to be hard for you whether or not you're: Tall, short, skinny, fat, white, ethnic, a vegetarian, gay, straight, bisexual, emo, punk, slacker, geek, nerd, jock, an attorney, an accountant, an actor, etc etc. These people all have the same experiences in life, and they all have friends and enemies just the same.
You have to love and respect yourself, and your friends will respect you in return. Well, typically women are just considered more beautiful than men. They wear make-up and tight clothes to accentuate that beauty as opposed to men, most of whom do not look good in tight clothes or makeup. Sure, some gay men appreciate the beauty of a man more than a woman, but I think we can agree that women are generally considered easier on the eyes. It doesn't surprise me that more women are curious about the same sex as opposed to men. She didn't suddenly turn gay. She's known she's liked women for as long as you've known you've liked them... she just never felt safe (for whatever reason, be it your fault or hers) exposing that side of herself to you (which suggests that there were other large aspects of her life that she didn't feel comfortable with in regards to her relationship with you).
It sounds like a relationship out of comfort/familiarity that broke under the strain of sudden commitment. We thrive on differing experiences and informed perspectives to help us learn about ourselves and the world. But at least you can admit that it's your personal reactions that are clouding your judgement.

Culturally being gay hasn't been an acceptable concept since pagan Rome. Once Christianity rolled in the roman catholics began to impose the idea that homosexuality is blasphemy. Men, being the ruling sex of the church, were more ingrained with the belief that homosexual tendencies were wrong than women(women were still fed this belief though). This religious cultural programming has began to unravel as the renaissance passed. Women, being less impressed upon, have been visibly more bi-curious then men because they have shed programing faster. If you follow through with this logic men will eventually come to terms with homosexuality as their cultural programming unravels too.

- ScottyQuest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9As I responded below, I both agree and disagree. There have been numerous studies to the effect that for the most part men are hardwired as either gay or straight. There is, however, a small contingent of true bisexuals in the mix. These studies monitor brain activity in people of both sexes while they view pornography. In all cases when a straight man (open minded, close minded, whatever) is shown images of gay sex it evokes a threat response. The areas of the brain that are associated with aggression, fight or flight, and threat response light up.
This isn't a social issue, it's hardwired into the male brain. That doesn't mean that it's on a conscious level. You can be as pro-gay as you like (and I am a supporter) and respond this way. Dr. Drew has often recounted his own experiences with this experiment, and his brain reacted with the exact same threat response. Females are much more ambivalent about lesbian photos. Some like it, some don't care. But there's no equivalent response from them, so it's an easier segue into bisexuality.
