- Frankyfan3, on 04/15/2009, -3/+33Politicians that support prohibition are supporting organized crime.
We need to reform these failed policies, and that is not a joke. - sockpuppets, on 04/15/2009, -1/+15Legalize and regulate drugs. Problems solved.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -1/+15"Why Mexican Mayors Have it the Worst During the War on Drugs" you mean aside being beheaded?
- sockpuppets, on 04/15/2009, -1/+11Let's see: Get shot and decapitated or make some extra cash.
Yeah, I'd be corrupt. - bwolf180, on 04/15/2009, -4/+14Mexico is so ***** up.....
- kd420, on 04/15/2009, -1/+8Unfortunately, this won't bring change until it becomes a larger problem in the US. Mexico still suffers from prejudice in the US (due to illegal immigration and other stereotypes) so it is still a case of "out of sight, out of mind". Americans, specifically American politicians, have no need to risk speaking out against prohibition (a risky move) because the extreme negative effects are not in the US. It will continue to be seen as an inherent problem with Mexico, or gangs in the US and not a consequence of the failed War on Drugs until there is significant blowback in the US.
The cost (literal tax dollars) are not talked about, so the average legal drug user has little initiative to make an issue out of it. - Hetman, on 04/15/2009, -1/+7Yea there is. The US military cannot solve demand. As long as there is demand in this country for drugs, and we have money to buy them, some one will risk there life to bring it here. Violence cannot solve every problem.

- MattM0914, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5I hope our elected officials are paying attention, though I doubt they are. You can let this go on until it eventually spreads to American soil, you can throw lots and lots of money at it with little to no result, or you can cut off a huge chunk of the drug cartels' cash flow while simultaneously increasing tax revenues by billions (yes, billions) of dollars. It doesn't take a genius to see what the logical solution is here. I guess it's unfortunate for us that our politicians aren't known for making logical decisions when it comes to drug policy.
- bobdole369, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5Nancy Botwin??!!! Methinks they have it easy...
- MattM0914, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5I agree 100%. I guarantee you the president of Mexico wouldn't laugh at the idea like Obama did.
- Hetman, on 04/15/2009, -2/+7Nah Mexico is such a bad place because of the arcane war on drugs that the conservatives have enacted. It is pretty sad actually.
- Bloodwine, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5I can't wait to go to Walgreens and get my prescription for crack refilled.
- imightbewrong, on 04/15/2009, -1/+6AMLO is corrupt
- sockpuppets, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5That's not what he said.
- Hetman, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5Actually they would probably just give you a script of Coke, you would have to go home and prepare the crack yourself.
- FearisFailure, on 04/15/2009, -1/+5Because they can't snort their cocaine.
- Hetman, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Cite your sources please.
- elpasoGuy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3The mayor of Juarez has a house for his family in El Paso, is what the local chatter is, not only for his family but it is said he spends a lot of time there himself to be safe.
- Rogor, on 04/15/2009, -4/+6No, I think Americas drug addicted prostitutes, living in squalor and selling their ass every night to send their money to Mexico for Mexican Mayors cash bribes have it worse.
- koonchu, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2For a very excellent portrayal of what this article is trying to say, look for the Mexican movie "La ley de Herodes." Extremely twisted (realistic) depiction of how a well-meaning saintly mayor is converted to a womanizing, corrupt swindler.
The title refers to a Mexican expression that goes "Herod's Law: If you're not screwed, you're *****." - str3ama, on 04/15/2009, -1/+3It's not about corruption (as if we don't have our own problems in the US with that). They are inadequately prepared by funds and resources to take on the cartels, plus I'm sure they also fear for their lives - being extremely vocal against the cartels isn't exactly the smartest move if you value your life.
The only real way for any progress to be made is for the drugs to be legalized and then heavily regulated and controlled. There's really no other way to tone down the violence and eradicate the necessity of these cartels by endusers, who are always going to create demand for them - and so long as it pays well - they're going to keep being vigilante and violent. Unfortunately the legalization of things like crack (IMO the nastiest of all drugs) isn't exactly something you want the masses to be engaging in, but a certain responsibility comes down to the individual who decides to use/abuse it. If it means less violence and less crimes as a direct result then it may be a fair trade :/ - potterboy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2Can't wait till June

- iamthearm, on 04/15/2009, -2/+3I bet so. That country enables the war on drugs. Their president doesn't give a *****.

East Asia and the "Golden Triangle" (Laos, Burma, Thailand) are the world's largest producer of heroin. So no, Rogor, you are wrong.
Also from this article and very interesting "U.N. estimates that between 3.3 - 4.1% of the world's 6 billion population are REGULAR users of illicit drugs.
Here's another juicy one:
"Annual profits from drug trafficking total about US 400Billion, or 8% of international trade." - riffic, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1liberalism is not a slur.
- IPrintAll, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Is he actually asserting that we adopt Asian policies as a solution? Yeah- that will go over like a fart in church.
Try again. - Rogor, on 04/15/2009, -2/+2No your wrong, theres hardly any drug demand in East Asia with a way bigger population than all of you, all the gov has to do is take the problem seriously, especially the judicial system.
- specialK16, on 04/15/2009, -12/+8Why? Because they are a bunch of corrupt *****, that's why.
- jerrycan, on 04/15/2009, -7/+3There is nothing here the US military couldn't solve...
