- Hentez, on 10/12/2007, -15/+72I just hope the politicians don't get all crazy, and start passing stupid knee jerk bills
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Because cops aren't bullet proof? Also, that's why we have SWAT teams. SWAT teams are the guys that rush in, with full body armor, assault rifles, flash grenades, etc., not normal street cops.
- craineum, on 10/12/2007, -40/+74No, that's what happens when only criminals are allowed to carry guns.
If one of morally conscious people that was killed by the criminal was carrying a gun and knew how to use it, this probably wouldn't have been such a massacre.
And if you think further restricting law abiding people from carrying guns is the answer, I bet you would get alot of backing from the criminals who don't mind breaking the law and carrying a gun so they can further oppress the people that like to follow these laws. - CaptMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -14/+42@kiaserlies
That's a gun's sole purpose? That's funny, I've fired lots of guns and never killed anyone. I must have been doing it wrong all this time. Thanks for pointing out my error.
@Hentez
Don't worry, they will. And it will probably be aimed at something silly like "assault weapons" which were in no way related to this incident. Anyone who stands against it will be labeled as supporting school violence. - smithfly114, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33no...this is what you get when someone goes ***** nuts. knives, forks, bats...do you think the crazy person cares?
- donkz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29they arested all asians to be sure
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24They were so young... still in college, whole future ahead of them. Such a horrible tragedy.

Stop shamelessly promoting your submitted article... - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23"No, that's what happens when only criminals are allowed to carry guns."
There's one flaw in your argument...he (Cho Seung-Hui) was a law abiding citizen right up until yesterday. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22http://www.roanoke.com/multimedia/wb/113323
14 minutes of film footage from some students who were nearby. I'm surprised this didnt hit the internet, but it took some digging around in hokie forums to find it.

This is Jamie Bishop's website, a photographer who was killed that day. It's so sad that humanity has lost such a person.
I hope you can all research who these people were. May they live forever, if only in memory. - inkyblue2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17terrorism: "The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons."
i don't think going ***** counts as an ideology. - kniwshmdcknit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Um... It's been one day. This is a major news story. No one cares that you don't care.
- cankillar, on 10/12/2007, -15/+29@kaiserlies
So, do you also think buglaries will stop if we outlaw them, that nobody will do it because it's against the law?
Waitaminute...
People, good or bad, will always have guns. It's a constitutional right. Criminals can get guns. If we outlaw them, they'll still get them. And then the people who need them to fight back against the criminals won't have guns, and it will be so much more easier to steal and assault people.
Here's an idea (taken from Pen and Teller): give every woman a gun. 97% of criminals are men(also shown in this incident), and most likely they will attack women because women aren't known to be incredibly strong. Guess what would happen. Would you attack someone you knew had a gun? - stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Umm it's definitely not over, bud. There are still people out there who have no clue what the hell happened to their friends/family and many others who just recently this morning found out what happened. It is only day 1 after this massacre, learn to show some respect.
- butch3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Not just students, a professor or two also died. This is so messed up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Meh, it's better than hearing about Imus and Anna Nicole Smith.
- orvtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14i do not think that is what would make the difference, back in south America one can have a gun cheaper than in the US, same goes for amo, and there is little control on who buys a gun in the back marked (which is a big one). but we do not see shootings in schools. colleges or universities. i do think it is something that it is being over looked in the US education or something in the environment that it is making this crazy people to snap in the wrong place in the wrong way.
I would like to encourage any 'crazy' people to jump to the railway or shoot them selves and let the rest of us in peace. - idugcoal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15um, they're asian, but the similarity stops there. come on, man.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14It's amazing how hard it is to become famous by doing something good and it takes a few minutes to have your name in wikipedia and CNN 24/7 for being a murderous prick.
- nottidredd, on 10/12/2007, -14/+25"thats what you get when you make guns machines for the sole purpose of killing available to everyone"
The majority of deaths from handguns are from ones that have been purchased illegally. Gun control does not stop people from obtaining handguns. It only limits the protection of law abiding citizens. - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13this is the lamest blog spam ever. these were just photos from the beginning of the day yesterday slapped underneath adwords with a big digg button. shame on you.
- OverThere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10They were detaining anyone that was outside during the lock down. It was not apparent to everyone who they were looking for. Along with any Asian looking kid, they were also detaining African Americans, and I'm sure some white kids as well.
For example:

http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/file.php?2,file=611 - maffiou, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19That guy wasn't a criminal, just a disturbed individual who purchased his weapons legally. Had a gun ban been in place, he may have sorted his problems differently.
- 13B1303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8misterflaut joined digg today and this is the only story he has commented on. What's your agenda here? Why in such a rage to divert attention from a tragedy that happened yesterday?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The shooter went to high school in Virginia before college. He didn't come here for school, he has family ties in that area.
- ryancalderoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@smithfly114
but you can't kill lots of people really fast and with such accuracy with a bat, knife, etc - OmniMe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The arrested guy looks nothing like Cho.
You must think all Asians look the same.
mattloaf1 is dead on. - digduggler, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14""thats what you get when you make guns machines for the sole purpose of killing available to everyone"

Yes, I want the people who cannot even park their SUV's to be packing. That sounds like a great idea. - Cumella, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Which is why guns in general should be hard as hell to acquire. Not totally prohibited, just rigorous background checks. Hell, even the question of a person's mental stability should play a factor when they try to purchase a firearm.
Then again that would be the ideal situation and will never happen. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You don't get it. This happened yesterday. YESTERDAY! We ARE still getting updates. We DON'T have the full story. This is STILL news.
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think he committed suicide. The cops wouldn't hide shooting him because at that point he was far beyond debating whether or not to be shot to death.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I would argue that it is a major story as shootings of this magnitude don't happen every day. If it were one guy being shot by some nut, who then committed suicide then no, it probably wouldn't be a big deal (as callous as that sounds) but this was pretty much a massacre.
I do, however, agree that most tv news outlets are basically political smoke screens now. This doesn't mean events like this shouldn't be covered though. Certainly all air time shouldn't be dedicated to it, but it is an important (and historic) event. Also, if you're like me and have gotten tired of TV news, there's always internet news outlets. - jjesusfreak01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It is clear that the gunman shot himself. The police said that they never engaged the gunman. Thats not something they would lie about, as I doubt anyone would get upset that the police had shot this man after he killed 32 people.
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Sorry guys..............
I agree with kanimara on this one. I saw the footage of all the cops standing around while you could here this ***** maniac killing people inside the building. If you are a police officer and you are wearing a vest and carrying a gun, GET YOUR ***** ASS IN THERE. Who else's job is it?? If there is no SWAT on scene does that mean the police, who are supposed to PROTECT AND SERVE get to stand around and wait while 30+ people are killed by a single ***** carrying a .22 pistol (!) and a glock 9mm?
This whole thing was done wrong, and I'm not talking about 20/20 hindsight here. This school had a shooting earlier in the year. There should have been a better plan in place already. The police knew there was a shooting early in the morning, the school should have been on lockdown for the rest of the day. For christ sakes the students weren't warned! Yes, I understand it's hard to warn all the off-campus students and that's why the school should have been locked down for the entire day after the first shooting that morning. Consider the fact that the police didn't have the slightest clue where the shooter from the first killing was, and they simply assumed he was gone. Ludicrous. - digitalsatori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I had read he was a student reporter for the paper or something and was harassing the police about getting answers for a report. They might have detained him for his own safety, as they were not sure at the time if the gunman was dead or what was going on. Or, they might have detained him because the only thing they knew about the gunman was that he was a "young asian male". The article has been changed since, but I remember reading it on Google News
- ldbjr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Anybody but me waiting for the upcoming assault on video games by the mindless news media? If this guy played video games (and hey, he was a young Asian male living in the U.S., it's pretty much a prerequisite) than that angle of the story is going take off like a brush-fire in SoCal. Get ready....
- spukeesan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@endofworld
The guy fit the description they were given and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Over 30 people were murdered - I think in this situation the police are justified in being a little jumpy. Were he held without being given his rights or for an inordinate period of time then your tirade may be valid, but this was not the case and you need to have some respect for what happened yesterday. - apzdsx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That's right, thetaoofbill. Not all stereotypes are negative. But even a positive one like "All Asians are good at math" is harmful to society.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They've matched one of his guns to both shootings, so unless one guy did the dorm shooting and then gave the gun to the second guy, then it's just the one guy.
- kniwshmdcknit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7He disobeyed legitimate police orders.
- Jelfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Except he was from South Korea and lived in the US for most of his life.
- kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Cumella
well they do what you just mentioned in Switzerland. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Mister not everyone spends all there time on the internet looking at news. I doubt even 20% of the country knows who the shooter is just yet. Eventually yes the media will overplay this like everything else. But talking about it only one day after a major massacre happened is NOT overplaying it.
- ldbjr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And as soon as I finish typing that and go back to the front page, there's Dr. Phil waiting for me...
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Dr_Phil_Suggests_Video_Games_to_Blame_for_Virginia_Tech_Shootings - sigintop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Maybe someone can help me understand this. Why do people think they can kill an armed gunman in a shootout when they've had experience with a gun? I mean I can't imagine shooting targets at the range is the same thing as getting into a fire fight. The people screaming, bullets getting shot at you, etc... Isn't it the same reason guys who use guns don't always make them excellent shooters during a war?
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For one we talk about iraqi deaths all the time. It's just not as emotional as this because no one here actually knows any of those people. They are just numbers to us and while we are saddened by them it doesn't hit us like this does.
And Just because people are dieing a lot more elsewhere doesn't make this any less tradgic. It is just as big of a tragedy but these are our kids. Our friends. Our Siblings. They mean something to a lot of people here at home. This is our tradegy not a bunch of faceless people in Iraq. You can bet Americans are going to be a lot more interested in this then people in Iraq because these are people we might actually know and these are people whos death might actually affect us or our loved ones. That's why we are talking about this. It's not that we don't care about people dieing else where. It's that we care a lot more about people who die who are actually close to us physically and emotionally..
You are not part of an elitest group because you don't care. You are just an *****. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Eyewitness reports during an chaotic situation like this are often quite unreliable.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's not major because it's all over CNN...it's major because 31 PEOPLE DIED! We JUST found out who the killer was today. We are still trying to get info on who died to put those of us who have loved ones there at ease. This is still news and there is a lot to talk about.
- kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@MisterFlaut
I totally agree, and I'm still digging you down, not because you're wrong, but because you come off as a total douche while you say it.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. - simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@dinkz
I have to say... because of Counter Strike I've probably adjusted my mind to react against and not run away, should I be in such a situation I see the benefit in risking my life to rushing a person with a gun over hiding and waiting for my death.
I'll risk my life to save yours, regardless if you make fun of me too for playing a game that's taught me to do just that. ; ) -
